Dolphins concerned about what you think of them

Early Friday the Dolphins, looking around the free agent market for a right tackle and finding very few left, tried again to get Zach Strief of the New Orleans Saints to visit.

He declined.

And the news was reported by The Herald's Barry Jackson thusly: Free agent right tackle Zach Strief declined an offer to visit the Dolphins. Indications are that he prefers to return to New Orleans.

And the nugget was picked up by ProFootballTalk.com.

And the Dolphins apparently freaked.

The team that has suffered its share of notable rejections -- Jim Harbaugh, Peyton Manning, Jeff Fisher, Nick Caserio, Ray Farmer, Tom Gamble, and Lake Dawson -- is sensitive to the idea that it is being rejected on any front by anybody.

And the club apparently felt there was a perception the Strief decision not to visit stirred the rejection pot again. This despite the fact neither report by The Herald nor PFT mentioned the words "rejection" or "spurned" or anything close to it.

The Dolphins complained to Strief's representation, anyway.

And so this morning agent Ralph Cindrich went on his twitter account to correct the record that, frankly, didn't need correcting because the facts were all there and the perception he was trying to correct wasn't shared by everyone, anyway.

So Cindrich tweeted:

"I was made aware from the Dolphins that there was an incorrect perception the Dolphins were spurned-not the case. Saints negot's heated up."

As I've been reporting on my twitter account, the Dolphins like Strief. He's actually the only proven right tackle left on the market. But he's 30, has roots in New Orleans, loves the team and wants to stay there. The Saints want to keep him but their salary cap situation is so problematic they're being forced to trade or cut good players.

So Cindrich, a longtime good agent, was hedging his bet by seeking other teams -- including the Dolphins. Cindrich has no issues with the Dolphins. Strief has no issues with the Dolphins. They don't talk on the phone and giggle like little girls about how ridiculous playing for the Dolphins would be.

It's just that Strief wants to go back to the Saints. It's business.

"Saints Mickey Loomis could not promise Strief home-cap rm," Cindrich tweeted. "Concerned, I sought teams, Dolphins fr start-every day. Great place for new start."

That does not mean, however, there will be a new start. It just means the Strief camp isn't mocking the Dolphins.

"Last tweet: Dolphins front office class people. Team took a hit when talks heated up with Saints. We never had a Miami visit set," Cindrinch added.

So where does this leave us?

Zach Strief, as of this writing, is not visiting the Dolphins. He has declined the invite. He's negotiating a return to the Saints. But his agent wants you to know that doesn't mean he's spurning the Dolphins.

More interestingly, the Dolphins want you to know they're not being spurned.

They're kinda sensitive that way.

You are the biggest ass hole I have ever come across troll boy

Ahhh, ummmm, I know - Who is Bent and Stupid for thirty dollars Alex

Dumb ass

Smarty boy just what we need

Clearly the Fins have not made Strief an offer he can't refuse. They can send him an unsolicited offer sheet. If they really want him they should do that to see if it can get the ball rolling.

Shelley Smith could be a steal of a signing. If you look at his combine numbers, he ran a pretty good 40 and had an excellent vertical jump.

IMO, vertical jump is the most underrated measurable for OL as it shows explosiveness from a set position. I think that translates more to strong run blocking than bench press numbers. When you can find a 300lb guy that can jump, it's highly likely that he can explode people back from the line of scrimmage.

Ben Tate to the Browns and Edelman is back wiht the Pats. Not great news.

This one is easy, Who is Marc's Lady boy friend for 37 bucks Alex

Maybe dope in Toronto will stop freaking out & whining about not trying to fill needs incessantly now.

HA! Fat chance! Classic foot in mouth scenario!

Shelley Smith sounds like a more athletic and much lighter John Jerry….average to below average but at least the dude should be in shape at just over 300 lbs…..modest contract, only 26…..he's probably good depth or below average starter…..which given our need for bodies on the Oline, is fine for now

Armando, how ridiculous you sound saying that the team didn't need to clarify the perception of the story as opposed to what actually happened. Having a GM that never clarified perception is EXACTLY what has gotten this team in trouble in the past! I'm thrilled that Hickey FREAKED OUT when the story broke that an invitation to visit a team had been declined, who the heck ANNOUNCES a declined invitation other than someone looking to disrespect the party offering the invitation in the first place? If Stephen Ross invited you to lunch to discuss some team issues and you couldn't make it because of a prior commitment or even lack of interest, would you ANNOUNCE on your blog that you'd been invited to lunch with Ross but had declined the invitation? Nope. Now, what if you HATED Ross? Well then, you might announce it just to stick it to him publicly. Armando, no one from the Miami Dolphins OVER-REACTED, they reacted and bravo for doing so!! Your casual approach to this team's perception won't repair the damage of past administrations, but Hickey's plan to make sure everyone knows EXACTLY what is what sure will! If you ask me, Hickey is killing it! We're one great draft away from fielding a truly competitive team this year! Go PHINS!!!!! :-)

Troll city

IF THEY ARE SENSITIVE TO WHAT PEOPLE THINK NOW JUST WAIT TIL THE SEASON STARTS

This current roster is not better than the roster that ended the 2013 season. Albert is an upgrade. Delmas is not. Mitchell is not. The guard they signed is an upgrade, Finnegan may or may not be.

At best we're the same as last seasons team.

I don't see any comparisons that can be made between Smith and Jerry.

Jerry has plenty of ability but is too lazy to improve but is solid in pass protection. Shelly is more compact and is a much better run blocker. They are entirely different Oline types.

Woodshed,

Shelley is going to be a solid addition as long as he stays healthy. Hes a system fit with good explosion as his vertical jump numbers attest. John Jerry was a lazy piece of shite who couldnt pull around pouncey to save his life to save his life.

I will ask everyone again today- Does anyone know what the guaranteed money is in the Finnegan contract?

Frank, no numbers on Finnegan's contract. Might take until Monday to get something official. I'm sure its something favorable for us, not the full 11 mil 2 years.

Mickey Arison, PLEASE BUY THE DOLPHINS!!!

Jerry > Shelley

ETF I disagree, I like the new direction of the players Hickey is selecting. He picked up two physical members of the secondary, made our interior d-line more versatile and better suited to 4-3 defense. He's addressing the o-line by bringing in more athletic linemen that fit the zone blocking scheme.

It seems like the players being selected are meant to fit the scheme. We rarely saw this with Ireland.

NeMo,

Some blogger on another thread posted that only $2.5 Mill was guaranteed. That would be very very sweet if true. That means, incentives kick in if he wins the starting job, gets INTS, works out in offseason program, etc. Finnegan is hungry no question. I just didnt want the team to overpay for him.

MIT,

I keep forgetting about Charles Brown- RT formerly of NO. IF they cant get Strief, they should call this guy. Hes young, would come affordably, and Polian also has him ranked very highly on his FA chart. Lets see if Hickey makes a play for him.

Ben tate to cleveland- fine with me! Injury prone, not a bruising type of RB. Ray Farmer is putting quite a team together up there! LOL.

Finnegan, I just didnt want the team to overpay for him.

Heck, paying him anything is overpaying him . He's terrible.

Darkoak still conversing with ETF master Load Swallower.

Jim, Finnegan I coming in to be a physical presence and compete for a starting job. He will keep our two young corners honest in that they won't just be handed a job. Not a bad pickup at all considering he has started in this league.

Hard to believe D Thomas is still on the roster.

It's called refuting another bloggers point without devolving into immature taunts. You should think about that.

Unless there are not enough camp spots available I expect he will be on the roster until camp at the very least. Hopefully we can find a more durable and skilled power runner to compete for his spot in camp.

Um. Obviously?

Got anything else?

Come on Hickey....still holes on the roster to fill. Where's Hester? Is he on the way Miami yet? We also badly need an OL...time to pull a rabbit out of your hat.

I think they should draft 2 RB's and get something going with competition. Kick the worst out.

How many times are we going to say this? You give them $$$, most of the Monkeys dance.

Too late for Hester. He doesnt have the speed anymore.

Oh boy!!!!

Now the organization is Johnathan Martin.

After 30 years of being a fan maybe its time to retire.

You realize you are actually perpetuating that troll stereotype right, or is that lost on you? I would assume it isn't as it is your shtick.

Ahem...you are the one feeding ETF (PriceMaster, TheSMF, Cadillac, Lincoln Continental, Fire Ross, The Load Swallower, Back Door, et al)

Dont feed the homers and they'll go away.

Well we still gonna need at least another linemen for next season then go BPA in the draft

Trolls all look the same to me, hard to tell you guys apart. I mean with all the name changing and duplicity you guys perpetuate how can any sane rationale person like myself keep track of all your aliases.

Seems to be a common theme for ASPD suffers like you, the deliberate duplicity aspect. And the poor social skills.

Silly Beasley....is it NOT? Premature to decide if the team is improved after only a week of FA? We also have the draft coming and possibly some good FA's to come? Go to Google type in "jump to conclusion"...then click on Wikipedia...good reading for those that think they know how 2014 will turn out as well.

Armando is a weak pathetic person that hides behind his keyboard he has never played or competed In any sport his whole life his quest is to undermine the dolphins whenever he can I am very disappointed what a shame read his latest article it's a pity

Wow

Darkoak,

How many times can you say duplicity?

If it isn't painfully obvious to you who some of these characters are, you have serious ADD.

Rams do not play "zone-blocking scheme", they play "man power"(http://nflsfuture.com/2012/03/28/team-by-team-offensivedefensive-schemes/#).

So, because of Shelley Smith's great athleticism, this part of his game was not "fully utilized". Now that it looks Miami will definitely be playing "zone-stretch" in 2014, Shelley Smith could emerge as "one of the best fa signings" of the "entire free agency".

Pouncey/Albert/ Smith all have the "athleticism required to have a successful "zone-stretch" scheme. Now, only need "2 other olinemen" of this type, and we're set.

This is the problem

The more accurate term for our lowly trolls is multiplicity...they have many names not just 2. But it matters not as they have takes that suck and aren't really worth responding to more than once.

Duplicity

I'm guessing that they still believe in our RBs because they didn't go after one.

I like Miller he has shown flashes of being able to do it.

Maybe they feel like it was the lines fault.

I don't believe for a minute Ross cares what we think. If he did, he would do everything in his power to model the Dolphins after the elite franchises in the NFL. He is giving a middle finger to us fans by keeping the unqualified Philbin(and until recently, Ireland)and running the show himself from New York. Instead of hating Robert Kraft and other owners, he should be seeking whatever advice he could get from them.

I'm guessing that they still believe in our RBs

I cant believe they're THAT dumb!

I try not to digress but once the troll bashing starts I'm always game. Sorry back to football.

I know some don't like Blount or Moreno but I'd be for bringing in a vet to push Miller and Thomas. I don't trust either to just get it done even with an improved line. I was all about giving Miller a chance last year but was wrong.

BPOTD!!!

Ohhhhhh.....what a coincidence. Hester in town for a youth clinic. Mr Hickey that seems like an opportunity. What about gathering a few of the players to make an appearance?

The time to get Hester was 12 years ago.

So two weeks ago Sam had the team on the road to ruins and despair, now we are a pick away from an awesome oline and playoff berth.

BPA in the draft probably isn't going to happen but it really doesn't matter.

We have somewhat of a need in every area, aside from maybe the d-line.

Top priority now is still the o-line with ILB coming next imo. We've added some youth on the interior line, now we need to find a run stopping middle linebacker.

WR,CB, Safety, TE, RB, and QB are all positions that could be addressed depending on how the draft falls and after the top 3 priorities are addressed.

I think you could possibly take a chance on getting one of the o-line spots 3 rd or later but not both. I personally prefer one in the 1sr rd. We've screwed around enough.

They are still free agent possibilities out there for o-line but I think they are looking for the right fit, not just a body. There are also several RB options.

I know!!! I know!!, Who plays Mitchell Prichett on Modern Family, Darkoak, for 26 bucks Alex

Taka

Not so long ago, "TRUE FACT", this franchise had hit an "ALL TIME LOW" as far as "LAUGHING STOCKS"of the league. Not so long ago we were deferring to, "not our choice", but, "the only choice left" in our gm search.

Now, the "most amazing thing", is thus far "our only choice" at gm, is doing a "much better job" OVERRALL than Irelad's done his entire career here.

Beit only choice or just "pure damn luck", finally, things just "maybe looking up". Still, I will not get too far "ahead of myself". The 2014 "DRAFT" has yet to begin.

What a bunch of jackasses

Dolphin Rick,

A "BPA" I would absolutely love to see available in the draft is Kalil Mack. I know he's rated an OLB, at 245lbs, he's still a little light for the position in the NFL.

However, at Buffalo, as an olb he had over 100 tackles and rated as "SHEDDING BLOCKS" extremely well. Which leads me to think, this kid can also be drafted to play "MLB" in our 4-3. I believe he has all of the tools to be a great player inside too.

So, even though I "HIGHLY DOUBT" he'll be around at 19, its "PURE NO BRAINER" to take him if he is. But most likely he's a top 10 to top 5 pick.
