Dolphins decline to play tag

Last season the Dolphins made Randy Starks their franchise player. The Dolphins also used their franchise tag on a tackle in 2011 when they used it on Paul Soliai.

So former general manager Jeff Ireland used the franchise tag twice in the last three seasons -- both times on a defensive tackle.

Change is afoot, folks.

This year new GM Dennis Hickey had the chance to use the tag on either of the two DTs because both pending free agents hit the market and he declined to use it on either.

The Dolphins indeed did not use the franchise or transition tag on any player Monday.

So the Dolphins won't be guaranteeing a huge sum of money on either of their tackles and that seems to be a plus. But that plus has the potential to backfire if the Dolphins lose both their interior defensive line veterans when free agency begins.

That possibility now exists because the team must lock up either Starks or Soliai before March 11 when free agency begins.

The Dolphins continue discussions with both players, according to a league source. But those talks have not advanced to the point a signing is imminent.

Let's rebuild each year...Yay..

This is fun.

Still don't see Tanny hitting wide open receiver 20 yards down field.

grimes was only guy we needed back, he got done. hickey off to smart and solid start

So we don't need Wake? Crack kills dusty. Put down the Hickey Kool-aid.

Maybe Hickey watched the tape of other teams blowing us off the ball running the ball down our throats all last year. If you think that was all on Wheeler think again.

Jairus Byrd would look nice in powdered aqua. When is the last time the Fins had a great saftey ?

Washed up and washed out up front hickey sees all go miami

need wake? we have wake

agree brickhouse byrd is great. so glad they didnt waste money on solia and starks though. loving hickeys start here

This is only the beginning the rebuild has began

Dashi always gets it right! Ask him what to do! He is amazing!

nice marc, loving it so far

I blew out my knee at work today it hurts like crap man I have to wait a week to allow swelling to go down then see a orthopedist , this is crazy

This new gm is a sharp guy I love it

I would not pay a safety big money no way unless he's a young ed reed

We have a couple of young tackles aj Francis , and that atuia guy

byrd worth a big contract

Dusty, After the nightmare from the second half of last season.... it's nice to see Hickey getting off to a good start.

DT both aged 30+. Someone will pay for their services= it might even be the Dolphins. But they are not willing to overpay by using the tag. To me, Hickey is 2-0 and off to a good start..

Look at you guys already proclaiming Hickey is god. Ross interviewed 7 people and he was second to last, for a reason.

As far as Armando's comment that..."The Dolphins continue discussions with both players, according to a league source. But those talks have not advanced to the point a signing is imminent." Concerning Soliai and Starks.... I can only say this... "Where was all the for warning from Miami's front office about getting Grimes signed..?

I don't think Miami should hand either Starks or Soliai a solid offer and place in in their hand until 2 or 3 days before the start of Free Agency proper. Other wise, Miami is just giving those two agents a paper to shake in the face of every team interested in either guy. Let those team (and the agents) do their own damned homework and financial evaluations.... Don't hand the the blueprint from which to work from...

Hickey for president

dashi ross never got anything right, maybe his 7th choice was actually the best choice

Schiano
Freeman
Revis
Grimes
Starks
Solai

Crack of Dawn: Ha ha ha ha

I'm with Hickey on this one , but with a caveat -- if either Starks or Soliai leave , I want a DT selected in the first round. We can come back and take an OL in round two. Of course , this also assumes we get either Albert , Monroe or Veldheer in FA , and preferably at least one starting OG as well.

FORMULA FOR SUCCESS:

Hickey
Philbum
Tannehill

Neither one was even a top 3 choice when each search started.

Grimes would have signed either way, he likes it here. Hickey get's no points from me.

Dolphins 11-5 2014

dbo the great @ 6:45

I agree we have to let some of last years starters go to be better.

jets 3-13 bills 5-11 next season.

This was a big mistake, we have enough holes, we do not need more...why risk losing a good DT, one should have been secured

Well...here comes Dickey and the Witch

We know nothing about Hickkey and he will be evaluated on his actions. Up to now, 1-0. When does FA begin? Ireland was very desperate and quick to the gun in it.

Oscar canola oil

Pretty soon we are going to hear from the witch, since you all keep praising Dickey and not mentioning her

She runs the show you fools!

Another great? dbo like dashi.

And you know Grimes would have sign here anyway?? You are talking out of your arse. You don't know him, you know nothing of the negotiations, you are full of hot air. We needed him, he ranks 2nd among CB free agents, and he had a Pro Bowl year. Go Phins! Run Ricky Run!

boobies be like we need to be held, women be like don't touch my boobies.

I don't like Go gogo that much anymore. Too desperate.

I wrote down the names of all of you that agree with risking good DT,,,,I will be back to you when you start crying that we cannot stop the run up the middle :-(

sign byrd and shields now. make that secondary nails

Ok people; it's like this; we need both Soliai and Starks or our defense is going to get demolished by good offensive teams. Next we need to sign a cb to compliment the other side of the field. If Patterson could stay healthy then we are set already but if not; I say we sign two former dolphins: Ted Ginn and Vontae Davis. Davis and Grimes would lock down the deep threat all day in every game. Then just imagine Wallace and Ginn on one side of the line and Hartline on the other. Defenses would be shaking in their boots every week; it just would not be fair! The only hang up to this is on offense. That darn Tannehill has to go. With a decent qb we would put every game out of reach in the firsthalf; the way the cheating Patriots did in 07; only we will complete the job!

go ggogo we didnt stop the run at all last season, wake up u fool

The NFL is a fixed Entertainment conglomerate. The only champions are the high paid people involved. The fans are all dumb suckers.

Yes I am desperate...desperate of losing and seeing one bad decision after another

No Faith

The fans that pay are even bigger suckers. You might as well feed corrupt charities like the United Way.

well hop on the new train, so far its sound

I guess, gogo, the guy believes in letting the FAs test the market before making any move to signing them, except for Grimes. That might be an indication of what he thinks of our FAs.

tannehill 4300 yrds passing. 28 td's, 11 ints, 5 rushing tds next season

wow if thill does that this team will win east, better find an oline

Vontae davis should be one of those children in the Att phone comercials

I tend to agree with Hickey now, with the exception of Grimes, all of our D Players were inconsistent last Season.

Wickey wickey Hickey

Have faith, don't despair. Hickey has made one decision and it was the right one.

The run issues we had last year was the LB problem, both Wheeler and Ellerbee ranked at the bottom of their positions against the run.

What cracks me up is that now they are bringing Jackson to take a look at him. Yes, you guessed, Jackson is also ranked at the bottom of the pile against the run

Are you kidding me?

get D Patterson a groin implant and resign him noow

cut wheeler, and replace him with dion Jordan. he can cover tightends better than any of our linebackers ad still rush.

The best run and most consistently winning teams in the league Like the Pats, Steelers and Packers let older over priced vets walk and replace them with cheaper younger players. Look at the mess the Cowgirls are in. They throw big $ at all their veteran players trying to win it. You need to develope young players and have them step in. I think thats Philbins intent ...... Hopefully ???? some of the rookies from last year are ready to step up.

As for Hickey the jury is still out. At least he knows he is operating with the upper hand. They are in great cap shape. No need to panic and overpay. I dont see Starks or Solia giving home team discounts. Let them see what they can get and see if it's worth resigning them. Why jump the gun ? He did the most important thing and that was resign your most important FA and go from there.

At least I always mentioned the witch, so her wrath will not be upon me

You all that ignore her, beware

Doesn't matter who plays at the other positions if our QB (Tannehill) can't hit wide open receivers ! No QB, No playoffs in 14!! Same ole' story

Go go go, Dusty couldn't have said it any better. They couldn't stop the run anyway. What would be the huge loss? If you could get one for the right price maybe but i wouldn't over pay after last years performance.
