Hickey not picking former boss as assistant GM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a 4-12 record last year and that got general manager Mark Dominik fired. Meanwhile Bucs director of player personnel Dennis Hickey got promoted to general manager by the Dolphins.

And as Hickey worked for Dominik for quite some time and the two seemed to get along there was speculation that Hickey, now in charge of his own personnel department, might hire Dominik as his assistant general manager.

That seemed particularly possible after Hickey fired former assistant general manager Brian Gaine.

But no.

Dominik today accepted a post at ESPN as an NFL front office "insider." He will appear on the seemingly infinite ESPN platforms -- you know, NFL Insiders, NFL Live, SportsCenter, ESPN2, ESPN radio, ESPN the bus, ESPN the kitchen utensil, ESPN in your underwear -- to provide commentary and insight.

And while that assignment does not preclude Dominik from joining a front office in the future, it clearly shows he's not joining any NFL front office, including the Dolphins, anytime soon.

The Dolphins don't currently have an assistant general manager as they enter the homestretch of their draft preparations.

The Dolphins, by the way, still don't have a head trainer, either, following the February firing of Kevin O'Neill as a fallout from the Wells Report. And while O'Neill is preparing legal action against the Dolphins for what he apparently believes to be wrongful termination, the Dolphins are going slow methodically in their search for a replacement.

FoxSports1 (sports network that doesn't have a bus or kitchen utensil) reported the search continues with names under consideration including Dave Price, former trainer of the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, Green Bay Packers assistant trainer Bryan Engel, and Kevin Bastin who was the head trainer for the Houton Texans from 2001-2009.

Armanda makes an actually funny!!!

Hickey and the Fins need to make a new start ; I understand that we're all tired of "new starts" , having had far too many of them over the past fifteen years , but we need to try and avoid painting this front office with the same brush as the preceding ones.
I like what Hickey has done so far and I also like what he hasn't done . . . at the very least, we won't be as big a target by the press this season (They're trying to buy a championship !").

Dominick has no job In the NFL

We got his assistant....reflect on that.....no people, he did not become a genius on his drive to Miami

"I know nothing"
- Joe Philbin

Ok dears we got some good news for you: We are rebuilding!!!!!

We got a new program in place for the next 3-5 years...we will begging by building the OL in the upcoming drafts (2 yrs estimate), then we will tackle the LB & RB (1yr), last but not least TE and secondary (1yr)

we feel real confident we will have a contender for the 2018 season

Sincerely,

The old fool

The Dolphins spent a lot of their cap space on defense (again). The defense has regressed each of the past two years and the massive funds an drafts picks invested in the unit have not paid dividends as of yet.

It was a mistake not to invest more in the OL in free agency this season (and last season, for that matter).

So, the draft will almost certainly be used to on OL, RB and (probably) more defense (S, LB, and CB). This lack of attention to elite TE and WR prospects will hurt the offense (which has been horrid for many years). Given the Dolphin's draft history, finding a single immediate starter other than a kicker or punter would be a near miracle.

Like Ireland and many others before him, Hickey is mis-building a team. The 2014 season will be lucky to reach 8-8 (the prediction here is 6-10). I also predict that Ross will give Hickey and Philbin another year to right the ship.

The problem for over the past decade has been poor front office decisions that has led to subpar player talent and subpar coaches. There is no sign that anything has changed.

As a Dolphin fan for a very long time, it is disappointing to see such mismanagement on a consistent basis. There have been many opportunities to improve the team over the past four or five years. Yet, the team continues to misbuild and, indeed, embarrass itself in multiple ways.

With only a single significant and clear upgrade in free agency (LT) so far, it's doubtful that the offense will be much better than 25th or so in 2014. This is beyond inept.

Very disappointing. Again.

HAVE ANY TB FA'S FOLLOWED HICKEY HERE?

Not for nothing but Jax signed 3 super bowl starters, 2 of whom played for Gus Bradley when he was the DC in Seattle.
How is it that Hickey can't even pick up the TB trash?

Dear old fool

I hope you are doing well

I am glad to inform you that we just had a fantastic free agency period. Our cap space is a shinny $20M. We made a lot of money!

You will be able to buy that new G8 you always wanted for our special trips to NYC.

Congratulation Sir, well done.

Sincerely,

The Witch

Break the curse, free the Homers

Old Fool @ 11:15

By the time 2018 rolls around we will be replacing the busts that we draft this season.

But you know what - I'm still going to get drunk on Sunday afternoons and complain about the Dolphins no matter how well or poorly they do.

Trainer is actually an important position. The staff EFFED up evaluating Brees back in the day. But lately they've been pretty good getting guys healthy and able to play.

And we need an Asst. GM. Hickey sounds like he's being spread thin.

Very true, Sigh, this draft is loaded with explosive skill players but because we didn't take o linemen in free agency in either year that are of any help beyond Albert - our draft is already compromised - I hope not though. I hope they can find a lineman or two that are not high draft picks to contribute.

I mean in houston they never dedicated a tonne of high picks to the o line and it did well. Same coach so we will see. So far, i am resigned to the meat of the draft spent on the line. All I can hope for is that they get it right so we can forget about the o line for the next 3 years at least in the draft.

How is it that Ireland and Company got ripped. Continually for adding ex-Cowboys and yet Hickey gets ripped. Because he's not adding ex-Bucs?

Which is it? Stick to one story and stop flipping just to find something to complain about.....D*CKHEAD!!

EVERYBODY KNEW THIS WAS A REBUILD EXCEPT MANDO

That is why Mando put up a list of premier free agents that were supposedly falling all over themselves to come here.
More top FA's signed in Jax and TB than signed here.

We are. In rebuilding mode, do not let them lie to you

Stop the lie

Craig M,
Blogs exist to broadcast the complaints of the contributors even when the complaint is about another contributor's complaints PHUC PHACE.

This team is lost in space. Dysfunctional throughout the franchise and infested with incompetence. A joke.

DC, pretty surte it's the doctors that do that job - the trainers massaged Patterson's groin all year.

Mando, we need you to attack and expose this regime in the name of the ci of Miami.

Break them to confess, we are in rebuilding mode

Break them , like you broke Failbin

Long live King Mando!

Miami got your back

ETF,

Except spme guys like you just come here to complain. You bring nothing else to the table cupcake.....

I'll judge Hickey after season one not before. For god's sake FA isn't even over yet. Most of the fans here have the patience level of an ant.

Craig M,

With an awesome point!

WHEN DAWN WAS PHOTOGRAPHED AT HICKEY'S PRESS CONFERENCE

with her boob against Hickey's are then I knew that Philbum was phinished.

But let's face it he'll still earn more than $1mil this year while you sweep floors and empty the trash.

So the talk is, Cogs wants to return to Miami. I might be in the minority here but I like what this guy brings to the table on the field. However, after everything that happened I think its time for everyone involved to move on. And I don't believe there's any way on God's green earth that Philbin would. Ever take him back.

Meant to say 'arm'

This is the first time in a long time the team has no Samoans on it... that's sad.

Sua'Filo in the first, Brandon Thomas in the 2nd!

Most of the fans here have the patience level of an ant.

No SB win in 43 years will do that to you.
No playoff win in 15 years will do that to you.
No winning season in 7 years will do that to you.
You get it now?

ARMANDO SALGUERO:

I ASK YOU TO LEAD THE WAY AND STOP USING THE WORD "BAY" WHEN TALKING ABOU THE TAMPA BUCCANEERS!

THERE IS NO CITY CALLED TAMPA BAY! TAMPA BAY IS WATER! ONLY COMPLETE IDIOTS THINK THE CITY IS CALLED TAMPA BAY BECAUSE THE FOOTBALL TEAM CHOSE THAT STUPID IDIOTIC NAME BACK IN 1976 AND SOME PEOPLE ARE TOO STUPID TO KNOW OTHERWISE!!

OH AND SOMEONE HERE YESTERDAY COMPARED THAT TO MAKING THE GREEN BAY PACKERS THE GREEN PACKERS BUT "GREEN BAY" IS THE NAME OF THE CITY, TOO!! SO YOU ARE AN IDIOT TO MAKE THAT COMPARISON!!!

ALL OTHER TEAMS ARE NAMED AFTER WHERE THEY ACTUALLY PLAY EXCEPT THE BUCCANEERS! THEY ARE NAMED AFTER A PLACE WHERE NOBODY LIVES EXCEPT FOR FISH AND SHRIMP!!

ARMANDO, CALL THEM THE TAMPA BUCCANEERS!! DO THE RIGHT THING!!!

Mark,

I like your Samoan too. Wouldn't be upset with him in the first, despite the fact hes still a liitle raw. However, did you know that both he and Dallas Thomas have very similar grades. Scary, no?

Remember Philbin and Sherman. Enough said.

I know my words hurt my brother homers, but it is better to be free of the matrix

As Sigh blogged, when your top decision makers are wrong, everything downfalls like a dominoes.
The 8th, last and only candidate is a recipe to failure. I do not care who that might be, the formula is wrong. How can we expect greatness from this formula?

Search the truth, stop the lie

Craig M,
You forget quite conveniently.
Last year while you and the other phans were blowing each other in celebration of all the great moves Ireland made in Free Agency I was the ONLY one that didn't fall for it and pointed out that more talent left than came in.
Turns out I was right.
I also pointed out last Spring that there is no way that corpse could be found at 6am and within 3 hours the cops have it solved that it was AH and the case is so strong that 9 months later there is no evidence and no witnesses that haven't been indicted for perjury.
I warned you about that also right here in this blog.

MIT,

Isnt Misi Samoan and Iatui?

Trainer is actually an important position. The staff EFFED up evaluating Brees back in the day.

Posted by: DC Dolfan | March 20, 2014 at 11:25 AM

-----------------------

That had nothing whatsoever to do with the trainers. That opinion came solely from the team doctor--namely Dr. Uribe (who is actually nationally respected but sure got that one wrong).

Strictly a medical decision. Training staff wasn't involved on that at all.

Yeah, I've waited 15 years since a playoff win. I'm 87 years old. How patient do you want me to be?

I agree

"I know nothing"
- Joe Philbin

And you know infinitely LESS than Philbin. How old are you, 6?

ETF,

Get your facts straight bud! I'm not a big fan of throwing money around in FA. Never thought for one moment that we'd built a championship team in FA last year. I was cool with the Wallace signing (even though I knew we'd overpaid) and I was happy with the Ellerbe signing and Hartline re-signing. I didn't get the Wheeler signing, wanted money spent on a TE and felt it was a mistake to rely on Martin to play LT. If we'd had more of a contribution from our draft picks last year then I think we would have made the playoffs. Some of that I blame on Philbin.

WHERE IS THE IDIOT HERE WHO TOLD ME THAT CALLING THEM THE TAMPA BUCCANEERS WOULD BE THE SAME AS CALLING THE GREEN BAY PACKERS THE GREEN PACKERS??

I WANT TO TELL YOU HOW STUPID YOU ARE AND SHOW EVERYBODY HOW DUMB YOUR COMPARISON IS. GREEN BAY IS THE NAME OF THE CITY WHERE THE PACKERS PLAY!! TAMPA BAY IS THE NAME OF A BODY OF WATER!!! THERE IS NOT CITY CALLED TAMPA BAY!! IDIOT!!

Dark is the sky upon Dolphins Nation

The Drew Brees injury was a total lie. Saban admitted he manufactured the injury story because he wanted Culpepper.

Fight back

YES MR. 2 WATT!! THANK YOU!!

IT WOULD BE LIKE CALLING THEM THE BISCAYNE BAY DOLPHINS!! OR THE POTOMAC RIVER REDSKINS OR THE DELAWARE VALLEY EAGLES!!!

STUPID!!!! TAKE THE WORD BAY OUT AND MAKE THEM THE TAMPA BUCCANEERS!!

Get Sense,

Must have missed it but didn't we finish 11-5 in 2008? In what world is that EIGHT years ago?

Sorry....SEVEN years ago?

yeap,

lol

I'm not sold But I'm not unsold on THill either. Watching the video I saw what I felt were 5-7 legitimate missed check downs. RT saw pressure coming & immediately as a QB when nothing is there you've got millisecs to find ur chkdwn & deliver..I didn't notice once him even looking for them.
Having said that I still feel RT has raw talent & with a better Oline combined with better play calling & better coaching a lot of this can get cleaned up right away. How much remains to be seen. Knowing RTs limited play in college as stated before expected a while for him to develop. Why would you think any different?

I'm my opinion RT should've been learning on the bench & feel it was more Ireland pushing for him to play so he could show everyone what a genius he was with pick #8. Also Sherman would've been on that bandwagon also. You never throw a good QB prospect behind a terrible Oline = never once saw it as a recipe for success, NOT ONCE. Despite this he's stood up fairly decent under circumstances.

Not sold but not unsold but won't put the blame on the QB for being thrown into "The Perfect Storm"

Aponte does gangbangs with Ross, Philbin and Hickey, Ireland wanted to rat everybody out.

Ritchie knows where the bodies are and now they want to bring him back !

rdubs, I stand corrected, Ok change my first pick to Jace Amaro or Rashede Hageman ...

Our Samoan quota is met.

Craig, I never got to see any of Thomas' results last year because he was injured in the entire process. he must've worked out for the team privately at some point but I haven't seen anything published. I hope they can make something of him because there was a very good interior lineman option in Brian Schwenke on board who ended up making 9 starts with the Titans last year they picked in the 4th. I really liked him.

Honestly, I would forget o line in the first all together. I think there's every chance Brandon Thomas or Gabe jackson can be every bit as good as Martin or Sua'Filo.

Amaro and Hageman or even Shazier I think can be special players. have to toe the line between drafting for next year and for the next five years at some point. If they can manage to snag two of Bitonio, Jackson, and Thomas between the 2nd and thrid rounds , forget about it... great o line draft that would be.

Fine, doctors/trainers, I stand corrected. Either way, they EFFED UP! Culpepper out of the league, Brees HOF'er.

Craig M,

Actually you are WRONG. As per the usual.

I mean, in your never ending quest to pay yourself on the back(I guess someone has to) you really should fact check yourself. The result is, you looking like a self absorbed incorrect weiner.

If the team had lost more talent than it gained, it wouldn't have won MORE games.

Just STFU & go back to the corner & take gogo dancer(your alter ego) with you.

The Drew Brees injury was a total lie. Saban admitted he manufactured the injury story because he wanted Culpepper.

Posted by: FYI | March 20, 2014 at 11:51 AM

--------------------------

Wow. You just lost all credibility here in two short sentences.

That is not even remotely close to accurate. The decision to go with Culpepper over Brees was SOLELY because of the bad medical opinion Saban and the staff received from Dr. Uribe. There was no secret agenda, no cloaks and daggers, no nefarious plan.

Those are the facts. If you want to dwell in fantasy that's you're business but it won't change them.
