Hickey not picking former boss as assistant GM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a 4-12 record last year and that got general manager Mark Dominik fired. Meanwhile Bucs director of player personnel Dennis Hickey got promoted to general manager by the Dolphins.

And as Hickey worked for Dominik for quite some time and the two seemed to get along there was speculation that Hickey, now in charge of his own personnel department, might hire Dominik as his assistant general manager.

That seemed particularly possible after Hickey fired former assistant general manager Brian Gaine.

But no.

Dominik today accepted a post at ESPN as an NFL front office "insider." He will appear on the seemingly infinite ESPN platforms -- you know, NFL Insiders, NFL Live, SportsCenter, ESPN2, ESPN radio, ESPN the bus, ESPN the kitchen utensil, ESPN in your underwear -- to provide commentary and insight.

And while that assignment does not preclude Dominik from joining a front office in the future, it clearly shows he's not joining any NFL front office, including the Dolphins, anytime soon.

The Dolphins don't currently have an assistant general manager as they enter the homestretch of their draft preparations.

The Dolphins, by the way, still don't have a head trainer, either, following the February firing of Kevin O'Neill as a fallout from the Wells Report. And while O'Neill is preparing legal action against the Dolphins for what he apparently believes to be wrongful termination, the Dolphins are going slow methodically in their search for a replacement.

FoxSports1 (sports network that doesn't have a bus or kitchen utensil) reported the search continues with names under consideration including Dave Price, former trainer of the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, Green Bay Packers assistant trainer Bryan Engel, and Kevin Bastin who was the head trainer for the Houton Texans from 2001-2009.

"I will take responsibility and start managing the team from now on"
- Joe Philbin

Mark,

I don't agree. I think you draft a guy like McCarron because he's undervalued. Who knows what he will become. You and DC told me REPEATEDLY that you continue to draft a QB until you KNOW you have a QB. I like Tannehill but I don't think we KNOW hes the guy. Are you prepared to pay this guy $100 million in a couple of years? I'm not. We start the process NOW.

And nobody knows if McCarron will be a good NFL QB or not, just as we didn't KNOW with Wilson, Foles or Cousins. Time to add to the stable. You don't like paying Moore $5 million a year. Lets work towards changing that.

It's against HIPPA regulations for anyone in healthcare, including doctors, to divulge any medical information, or any information unique to a patient (even last name or address), without the express consent of the patient.
I work in the healthcare field, this stuff is drilled into us.
All joking aside, I do believe Saban used the team doctors medical advice to make the decision. But when you have a written recommendation from Dr. James Andrews... who the f would follow advice of doctors who poked and prodded him for 6 hours, vs. the advice of a very prominent doctor who actually performed the procedure?

DD, perhaps I should be more clear, I don't care to see a Qb drafted with any pick of any worth. It's bad enough we spend $5M of our cap room on a qb we refuse to use even if our starter is on one leg, but to use a draft pick of value, pass.

I hear what you say though but generally your odds are best with using a first round pick to find your franchise player.

I sink or swim with Tannehill - don't turn anywhere else this year. IF we finish with 9,10 wins then we are ok with him for another year, no?

If we flop and finish 4-12, 6-10 then we can use the first round to pick - which would be high to select his successor.

A fly in the ointment is if he's injured all year or the team finishes with the same record and performance from the QB.

Right now the Oline has Pro Bowl Center Pouncey, an above average guy in Pouncey and Smith who is a darn good run blocker and pulling guard."Rebuilding the line in the Draft?" What kind of dumb comment is that?? You expect a Pro Bowler at every position?? We have 3/5 of our line built. If we pick up a serviceable guard and draft Martin, there is your rebuilt line. SMH with some of these idiotic comments

Take the blind off

Whoever keeps ranting about the Tampa Bay Bucs in ALL CAPS!: The Carolina Panthers, the Arizona Cardinals, the New York Jets and the Minnesota Vikings are not names for the cities in which their teams play. And let me know what are the best restaurants I should visit in the city of "New England."

The truth and nothing but the truth

Stop the lie

Word of the day: REBUILD

So Michael Sams pro day 40 yard dash has had huge discrepancies in times recorded. I wonder if the faster times were taken by someone who is gay....hmmm

most are so impatient and quick to label a player a "bust" (geez, could there be a more overrused word/term?....hhmmm, actually "elite" and "one-trick pony" come to mind)--so was Rich Gannon a "bust"? Kicked around on several teams as a mediocre mostly backup QB for his first 10+ years, before finally starting and excelling with the Raiders at age 33 or 34--similarities to Jim Plunkett, who achieved success well into his career--both won Super Bowls, later in their careers-we could think of others--because they didnt excel early on, or for many years actually, would they be busts too?

Based on what I see playing out in FA and Hickey's methodical approach. I think the following is likely to play out.

Draft
Rnd 1 - OT
Rnd 2 - G
Rnd 3 - LB
Rnd 4 - RB
Rnd 5 - WR
Rnd 6 - OL

UFA's - after the draft I see them adding as many OL's, LB's, RB's and WR's as possible for camp competition.

Acorn Hunt - Less known VET FA OL's who may be available leading up to draft but also even as camps begin and vets fall off rosters.

BTW, DD, I've gone on record that when in need of a qb, it's the only time you draft for need instead of BPA.

And if we are drafting a QB better than Tannehill, why bother. The only guy, period I give a better than 50% chance of being better than him is Bortles. None of these other guys look like QBs .. maybe Carr but you may be getting the opposite of the Matthews and Long genes and drafting a bad bloodline, haha.

He looked awful v USC by the way ... just pathetic.

Yeppee more Acorns coming our way

Seek the truth

Mark,

Totally disagree. Weren't you the one who. Said something like 50 per cent of the guys taken after the third round don't pan out. So how is taking a guy like McCarron in the fourth round a 'pick of value'? We start the process now. Devlin's time is up. If he was in this draft this year, chances are he wouldn't get drafted all over again. A guy like McCarron starts as the third this year and then moves up to backup next year when the team dumps Moore. Time to work on the 'provisional' plan now. If Tannehill proves his worth this year and next he gets his $100 million contract, if not we at least don't get caught flat-footed.

Darkness is upon us

Omar Kelly ‏@OmarKelly 1m

At this point my ideal draft is 1. Mosley 2. Hyde 3. Mewhort 4. Garoppolo/Fales 5. Wesley Johnson 6. Dontae Johnson....& I'm flexible on QB

No hope

Craig
1) I never said draft a Qb year after year.
2) I said if you want to draft a backup to replace Moore, fine.
3)We don't need to make a decision on Tannehill until at least after next season. This is premature IMO. not like teh coaching staff will give a dam about some 5th round pick rookie Qb - their efforts will be correctly spend on Tannehill because he controls everyone's destiny to a large degree. It's a wasted pick.

Glad omar isn't handling the draft ... stinky.

Athough I do like Donate Johnson and Wesley Johnson as late picks.

mewhort, hyde, and Mosley ... no thanks.

This is a QB rich draft. Dont know if McCarron is included.. there are a bunch better.

I don't believe neither story if you ask me.

I believe the rumor that was going around that Saban didn't want Brees because he felt with D.Brees size that he wouldn't last and he liked the Bigger & Stronger Culpeper for the long term.

I believe neither the Injury (Which happens all the time in Baseball) or the Contract were the issue.

Satan lies and will never admit the truth.

So we may never know the real reason why.

P.S.- What is it with some of you swearing they know more than the next person. It makes you look petty and childish. You guys are the same ones that love calling other bloggers idiot. Look in the Mirror.

Bobby, going into a season with 3 first time starters on the o line is rarely a recipe for success.

And Shelley Smith has been a backup for ages and now we are tabbing him an above average starter? Quite a leap, don't you think?

I don't think this line is anywhere near being built and has huge holes in it...

Mark,

I'm not looking to replace Tannehill. I still believe in him. But I think we need to continue. To look to improve the position. 'Skins pick Cousins in the fourth round. They hope to move him for a first or second (likely not happening). Pats draft Mallett in the third. Likely trying to do the same. Its good business and if nothing else you have a young, cheaper back-up. I like Moore better than you but I think its nuts to be paying this. Guy $5 million a year.

STEVE I WILL NOW ADD YOU TO THE LIST OF IDIOTS HERE!! ALL THOSE PLACES YOU MENTIONED ARE WHERE PEOPLE ACTUALLY LIVE! DOES ANYONE LIVE IN TAMPA BAY?? DO YOU KNOW FISH PEOPLE THAT LIVE THERE?? IT IS WATER!! IT IS NOT A CITY OR A PLACE WHERE HUMAN BEINGS ACTUALLY LIVE!!!

SO UNLESS YU THINK LAKE SUPERIOR VIKINGS OR HUDSON RIVER GIANTS WOULD MAKE SENSE THEN YOU HAVE NO POINT AT ALL!! ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!!

NO TO BAY! YES TO TAMPA BUCCANEERS!!!

Craig, this draft is ultra deep. There's a chance there is a RB like Sankey or Andre Williams there and you would rather take a flier on a guy you hope won't see the field ... ever?!

Craig, instead of using the pick to HOPE to use it to flip for future picks, why not just draft a player you can use right now?

Mark,

You do know that Anthony Collins, a guy you were really high on, was a backup for a number of years too. If I'm not mistaken he only got his chance last year when the starter (Whitworth?), got hurt. Not sure anyone is saying Smith will be a star but I like this move a lot better than paying a guy like Beadles the kind of money he got.

lol

Aquaman lives in the Tampa Bay. he loves the lack of state taxes.

Dashi,

The Tampa Bay Fish People, I like it! Would the mascot be "The Creature from the black Lagoon" Team colors black and green?

ANYBODY WHO SAYS THEY ARE "GOING TO TAMPA BAY" IS AN IDIOT UNLESS THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT GOING FISHING OR SNORKELING!!

I AM FROM TAMPA AND HAVE NEVER LIVED IN TAMPA BAY BECAUSE I AM NOT A FISH!!!

TODAY YOU HAVE MANY VERY STUPID PEOPLE THINKING THERE IS A CITY CALLED TAMPA BAY BECAUSE THE FOOTBALL TEAM GAVE THEMSELVES THAT STUPID NAME IN 1976 AND THEN THE OTHER TEAMS DID THE SAME LIKE LEMMINGS!!!

IF YOU HAVE EVER CALLED THAT CITY TAMPA BAY YOU ARE STUPD!! SHOULD I CALL MIAMI BISCAYNE BAY?? GO BISCAYNE BAY DOLPHINS!!!

I clearly remember someone here last year stating more than once that DJ Fluker would not be a good pick in round #1. He was too slow to be an immediate starter as a OL. While he was young and did have his share of mistakes he did just fite at RT for the Chargers who took him at #11 in Rnd #1. He would have been a huge benefit and upgrade to any of the starting OLINEMAN on the Fin's squad last year. Instead the team shot up to #3 to pick an injured Dion Jordan.

My Point....This team needs to upgrade its OL desparately. Hickey can't afford to go BPA in the first two rounds. He needs to go BPANP - Best Player Available at Need Position. He needs to lock up an OT and G who is young, strong, athletic and comes with big college starting experience (min 3 years).

If Zach Martin is there he will be pick #1 (assuming the other 3-4 OT's are already gone).

Mark,

My plan has us taking taking a running back second or third round. Considered what we've gotten out out of Egnew and Dallas Thomas so far, I see nothing wrong with taking a guy like MCCarron in the fourth. I'm all about value and I think fourth round is great value for. This guy. I think he's better than his pre-draft slot and I think he'll be one of the surprises of the draft.

Craig, lots of guys are backups turned starters. Point is, we are banking heavily on this guy and it's a significant risk. You are asking him to be your third best lineman.

he may turn out, he may not but I would've been a lot less concerned with a guy who had a track record and is still only 26 too.

And you mentioned Beadles... I would've taken the combination of beadles and Nolan Carroll anyday over Finnegan and Smith ... same cap money give or take a mill this year.

And I hate carroll.

I gotta agree with Craig M on this one. Tanne sucked the last 2 games and that really worries me, so I think a QB in the 4th is a good idea, and McCarron is a good choice there. That way, if Tanne does fail, McCarron (or whoever) will have had a year to sit and learn and will be ready for 2015.
Still hoping a trade comes about to give Phins extra 2nd or 3rd. So many needs, so few picks.

DO YOU KNOW WHY THEY NAMED THE TEAM TAMPA BAY BACK IN 1976?? BECAUSE THE OWNER WAS A STUPID OLD REDNECK WHO THOUGHT THE PEOPLE IN ST. PETERSBURG WOULD BE BUTT HURT IF IT WAS JUST CALLED TAMPA!!!!!

HOW STUPID IS THAT??? DO PEOPLE FROM FT. LAUDERDALE NOT GO TO MIAMI DOLPHINS GAMES BECAUSE THEY ARE UPSET THEY WERE LEFT OUT???

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A TERRIBLE NAME BECAUSE NOBODY LIVES IN "TAMPA BAY!!!!!"

YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT MORE! AND NOBODY WOULD THINK TAMPA BUCCANEERS WOULD SOUND WEIRD IF THAT WAS THE NAME FROM THE START!! YOU WOULD THINK "TAMPA BAY" SOUNDED WEIRD!!!

Funny how even the Tanny lovers are saying to DRAFT A QB!

FAH-Q.

Ok, Ok, Tampa guy. Jesus. Are you off your meds?

(although I must admit you have a point here, lol)

JPAO,

Good points. I liked Fluker last year but I felt 15 would be too high for him. I figured late first, early second. Had a nice year and it really helped get Rivers back to the type of QB he's capable of being. I like Martin at 19 too but I like this guy as a stud guard long term. Sacks were really bad last year but our guards did a shitty job in the run game last year too.

I see this draft being very similar to last years. There were 3 big name OT's and Fluker was 4th. Fluker was taken at #11. The Giants stood at #19 and they needed a OT. They selected Justin Pugh from Syracuse. He proved to fit their need just fine, suring up their OLINE.

Is he the best OT? No.
Was he the BPA when the Giants selected? No.
Was he the BPANP for the Giants? Yes.
Would he better than most of the Fin's starters last year? Yes.

There were plenty of other 'sexy players' ahead of Pugh but the Giants held strong and selected BPANP.

I see Hickey doing the same this year. Man I hope he does just that.

No hope

You are hopeless, we ALL agree.

wow, Go is like Ghandi.....so deep, so wise

JPAO, I did say that about Fluker, but the guys I liked more than him are not too shabby, no?

Even some guys I liked later I still like better for the long term ... Terron Armstead for one, Kyle Long another (who can play RT).

I even like David Bakhtiari and Jordan Mills better as late picks and they played and held up all year too.

Doesn't mean Fluker was a great vaalue at 12. I still take the guy I liked best at 12 over him anyday and twice on Sundays - Sheldon Richardson.

Go gogo reminds me of the dump I took earlier. Useless.

Imagine the blog without Mark in Moronto, Craig Moron(near Moronto), Dashi the 3rd person rambling idiot with potty mouth & Lady Go gogo.

Nice, right?

One thing I've learned from TAMPA'S rant - the Buccanneers are named after a body of water, and not the city of Tampa. Who the f names a football team after a body of water??

NO I AM NOT ON MEDICINE STUPID!! MAYBE IF YOU WERE FROM TAMPA YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND THIS MAKES MANY PEOPLE HERE VERY MAD!!

PEOPLE ACTUALLY SAY 'TAMPA BAY' TO DESCRIBE WHAT CITY THEY ARE GOING TO BECAUSE THE STUPID FOOTBALL TEAM GAVE THEMSELVES THAT STUPID NAME!!!

DO YOU WANT PEOPLE SAYING THEY ARE COMING TO VISIT YOU IN BISCAYNE BAY OR THE GULF OF MEXICO??? ARE YOU A GROUPER???

GO GULF OF MEXICO SAINTS AND BISCAYNE BAY DOLPHINS!!!

MASS, THANK YOU!!!! AT LEAST ONE PERSON HERE GETS IT!!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Omar sure likes Johnson. ;)

Dubs, The Tampa guy isn't Dashi. I actually find it funny that some idiot Buccaneer fan is complaining about Tampa on a "Miami Dolphins Blog".

I have family in Tampa. Well not Tampa. In Brandon. The outskirts of Tampa. They moved on up.

To me "Tampa is the Armpit of Florida".

Craig - I agree that Martin could be a stud G. But we don't know if he could turn out to be a stud RT. Lets get him on board knowing both positions are a NEED and lets see what he proves to be after year one. If they take him I see him as the RT year one.

In terms of last year. SACKS were on RB's, OT's and G's. The first few on Mando's video from yeserday showed big fat John Jerry as the turnstile he became. Pathetic!

Mark,

They are paying Finnegan $3.5 mil this year. If they don't like him. They can walk away. What was the contract that Beadles got? A five year contract for $30 mil, with $13 mil in guarantees. How is this anything close to what our two guys got?

You accountants kill me! You can make numbers on a page say whatever you want.....lol.

DO YOU KNOW THAT ONE STUPID PERSON HERE YESTERDAY SAID IT WAS THE SAME AS GREEN BAY?? WELL DUUUUUUH! GREEN BAY IS A REAL PLACE WHERE PEOPLE LIVE! NOT LIKE TAMPA "BAY" WHERE ONLY FISH AND SHRIMP LIVE!!!

WHERE IS THAT DUMB PERSON NOW????

..MIT..I'm with Craig. I am not trying to replace Tannehill. I think barring a Sanchez-Gabbert like fall. Tannehill is going to be the Quarterback here for the next 2 years. I hope he takes off and becomes a guy that come contract time. It makes the decision easy for the team. But..

I want a guy that we can bring in and learn the system. A guy that in the worse case scenario could be the starter in 2 years, or if there were an injury. A guy like a Garrapalo who is not ready to play. But has the skill fit for this style of offense. Best case scenario he is a cheaper backup to Matt Moore, he doesn't play, and in 3 years we trade him for a better pick.

Worst case scenario..in 2 years we still have the option to draft a first round quarterback. But we have a guy that is capable to start if said first rounder is not. Or, the developed guy is the answer, and we look like geniuses.

There is no downside to exploring the quarterback spot. Especially if he is the BPA at the time we choose.

TAMPA BUCCANEERS! TAMPA BUCCANEERS! TAMPA BUCCANEERS!

SEE? IF YOU JUST SAY IT ENOUGH IT IS NORMAL AND RIGHT!!

I HOPE THE NFL NEVER GIVES ANOTHER SUPER BOWL TO US UNTIL THEY CHANGE THE NAME!!!

Maybe it's just me, but I kinda like Biscayne Bay Dolphins. Has a nice ring to it, and maybe changing the team name will change the misfortunes of this once proud franchise. Couldn't hurt.

JPAO,

You're on a roll today,my friend. Great points on the Giants last year. Only think I'd say is it didn't translate well to the running game but that was more on the. Running backs than anything.

And I agree on Martin. I think he probably starts at RT but everything I read and see on him suggests that he'll excel as a guard.

@JPAO,

The Giants OL was terrible. Fluker didnt shore up anything.
