Update on Nolan Carroll and Dimitri Patterson

The Dolphins settled family business, to quote the Godfather, when they re-signed Brent Grimes on Monday.

The status of their other two 2013 starting cornerbacks has yet to be settled.

Nolan Carroll, who started 12 games last season, and Dimtri Patterson, who started four games, are uncertain about their status with the Dolphins at this hour.

Carroll, a pending unrestricted free agent, expects to test free agency when the market opens on Monday, according to a league source. That doesn't mean he won't return to the Dolphins.

Carroll's agent met with the Dolphins during the Combine in Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago and the team told him it would like to have Carroll back. But that desire has so far not been accompanied by a contract offer to make that return possible.

So Carroll will shop his services with hopes of landing somewhere he can at least compete for a starting job.

Patterson is an interesting issue because he is signed for 2014. But because that is the final year of the contract, and because his salary cap number is $5.4 million, and because he has been injured a majority of his time with the Dolphins, there is speculation the Dolphins will either ask Patterson to take a pay cut or restructure (set money off into incentives tied to playing time).

Or the Dolphins could simply cut the veteran and save $5.4 million of cap space because there are no negative cap ramifications in the move.

So far, the Dolphins have not notified Patterson of any pending move. So he remains on the team at his current contract.

But only for now.

Looks like the family has more business to settle.

Carroll looked pretty awful sometimes, but that NE game where he and Grimes were both on the sidelines, I appreciated him more.

I would love the team to keep a healthy Patterson, but his groin apparently has about as much prospect of getting fixed as does the Leaning Tower in Pisa.

Mark That's Funny! I can relate, many broken items on Sunday over the past 15 seasons. God that's hard to even type!

The correct thing is being applied in both players situation.

Carroll, test fa market. No one will offer "starter pay", he'll be back.

Patterson, restructure or cut. Given the "injury history" his new team will also demand "injury insulation" be inserted into his contract.

the chargers cut lerondo mclain full back. would be a big boost to running game with the fins. that is the biggest area of need. take some pressure of tanahill

This blog post provided no substance at all.

..MIT..I posted a comment about Tripp on the last page if you want to read it..

Thanks for the heads up DD, I was going to flip back to check anyway, thanks again.

ralph, good reason why he's teh cheapest starter - because he's the 22nd best corner entering free agency as per RotoWorld.

Grimes has one spot nailed down, Wilson is entrenched as a very good nickel corner, let's make the other spot a competition between patterson and Jamar Taylor and let's go...

Yeah, I would try to get Patterson to take a pay cut or change some if his salary to require him to be active on game day.

Carroll I'm sure they will only bring back at very cheap.

Wilson is an excellent nickel as Mark mentioned.

Taylor I liked a lot when they picked him and Davis has potential too, but both are big question marks at this stage.

Patterson, when healthy is as good as Grimes.

Does anyone know the long term prognosis to heal a torn groin? In other words, can he heal 100% by start of training camp? If yes, restructure, if not cut him.

While we're on the topic of injuries...does anyone have any intel on what the heck is the status is with Jamar Taylor? Mando, can you do some digging and find out the status of this guy? He's supposed to be a human highlight reel that was worthy of a 1st round pick...

Mark,

If Patterson takes a pay cut, I have no problem with the team giving him another go or let Jamar Taylor or Will Davis try to hold down the other spot. Patterson NEEDS to take a pay cut or restructure his deal.

The LB situation is what needs sorting. If Ellerbe goes back to the Will position and the team brings in a new SAM and cuts/trades Wheeler, I think improvements would be seen immediately.

If nothing happened, Mando can not fabricate it.dont kill the messager, he gave you a little bone to chew on

I meant bring in a new Mike LB not Sam

Yeah. No update, genius.

After carefully reading it, it does say update in the column....uhmm, what happened Mando?

Agree to bring back Dmitri on a restructured deal.
When he was on the field with Grimes, it was a different secondary. Add a playmaking safety to go with R.Jones, who will bounce back this year, and the secondary will be a strength. Now, about that OHHH-OOHH- L-line...

Most mock draft boards have OT Zack Martin (Notre Dame) going to Miami at #19. Comparisons to Logan Mankins with a toughness you cannot teach...which is poetic justice if we could draft another "Martin" at OT that is the polar opposite of what we just had.

The interesting thing that I am paying attention to is the Dolphins keeping M.Moore and D.Patterson. Both should be cut.

I could understand keeping Patterson if you don't resign N.Carroll. Patterson plays well when he could. And hopefully the off season has allowed for the injuries to fully heal.

I don't get the infatuation with the atrocious Matt Moore. M.Moore better be a hell of an assistant. Cause they aren't keeping him because of his performance.

Get Byrd, I will be impressed

Frank, LB will be different next year. I think that free agency hasn't even started yet and D'Qwell Jackson has already been in for a vist pretty much tells us that Wheeler is finished.

If we want to see safety help in the draft, to me the best guy at the top of the draft is Deone Buchanon, Wash St. But he's a strong, not a free - similar to Shamarko Thomas who was drafted by the Steelers last year. There is no immediate help for the safeties coming out of this draft...

Exactly Dashi, just think about it, by cutting matt Moore, that would be most of the cap space required to sign Jarius Byrd.... just foolish spending money on a Qb you won't even use if your starter is on one leg like Tannehill was in week 17 last year. That pretty much told me that Moore should be history.

Solia has to signed NOW

Miami MUST get a LT in FA...fail to do accomplish this task and it will be a doom season

MIT,

My problem with Moore, Apart from averaging 2 Turnovers a game for his career. Matt Moore has completed less than 50% of his passes the last 2 preseason. Last season he only completed 39% of his passes.

And yes, It is the preseason. EXACTLY!! If you can't play well in preseason how do you expect him to excel during the real season.

I hear the witch is off to London, so nothing is going to happen until March 11

Go...gogo --- so they don't have phones in London?

NH,

Groins take time to heal. And with the groin being located where it is located the chance of reinjury are great. He should be ready for training camp. As long as he isn't running for a while, the groin should heal.

I agree Dashi, he's looked horrible against 2nd and 3rd stringers ...

NH, think about that for a second, with teh 19th pick in the draft, the Dolphins would be selecting Logan Mankins. Not even teh patriots with the real Logan mankins used a first round pick to select him.

With Xavier Sua'Filo, Gabe jackson, Joel Bitonio, Brandon Thomas, and even Cyril richardson and David Yankey hanging around, I see no reason to select Zach martin because there is very little incrementl value there over the next best alternative.

if we can get Patterson to restructure his deal, (which he should due to injury risk)... get rid of Wheeler and replace with just about anyone, including Betty White we should be ok next year in pass coverage.

Does anyone believe that Coyle will ditch the 4-3 this year? If they are secretly planning to move back to a 3-4 then the entire free agency & draft board changes drastically IMO....

Mark in Toronto,

How lovely you are in the moonlight. Shall we go to that little bistro on Spadina Avenue?

Mark...Mankins was taken in the first round of the 2005 draft and has been to 5 pro bowls & two Superbowls.
If we can get that type of production from Martin I'll take a chance on that bet.

Wow great article!!!incredible new information here Armando!!!
Thanks a lot!!!

If I made 5 million a year and played for the Fins my groin would be falling off.

We will become even more 4-3 this year. Coyle runs a 4-3. Hickey specializes in drafting for a 4-3.

Hickey as a GM makes sense for the Dolphins. He has scouted for a WCO and a 4-3.

Coyle lied. The Fins won't run multiple defenses. They will run multiple fronts. But the base defense is a 4-3.

Cincy under M.Lewis runs a 4-3. M.Zimmer runs a 4-3.

I expect Coyle to also be a 4-3 guy.

If Coyle even had the slightest idea on how to run a 3-4, D.Jordan would've been the starting OLB.

Let then of five plays from last years? now I seen them on tv ll of them but youmust not have. maybe you just stupid if you said that!!!

Zach Martin ain't Logan Mankins . . . Don't cut Matt Moore , trade him.

Who will trade for M.Moore?

Seriously.

Definitely now. Maybe during the season. But not now.

At this time of year teams are looking for guys that they want to build around. Not guys that might be able to give them 1 good start.

Just being honest, Moore sucks!!

not gonna get a thing for moore, cut him and save the cash. draft a qb mid rounds, hopefully murruy

The same ones liking M.Moore probably were J.Fiedler fans.

Even if all we could get for Moore is a 7th rounder , that's still better than letting him walk for nothing.

So if we cut Moore and his $4M salary, who is our new back up? Please don't say Michael Vick.
Do we draft QB in the 5th round?

Dashi...Fiedler was the best true grit gamer we had under center since Marino left...and btw the last QB to actually WIN a playoff game for us.

I'm praying we go after Jay Prosch. This guy is a tank with a helmet.

Dump Moore? Last I checked, no team really has a starting quality backup qb, unless you want to count bust, Sanchez.

Ever considered why they are called "BACKUP QB's"? Exactly what they are paid as too. Ride with Devlin instead of Moore?

Last I checked, Devlin did ZILCH to push Moore for '2nd string" 2013. If Moore's awful, how do we then quantify Devlin?

Dashi, again you have answers, but supply no REAL SOLUTIONS.

Sam...no way Philbin gets rid of his security blanket in Moore.

Dumping Moore sounds like a 2015 "TANKING SOLUTION, if Tannehll goes down. Devlin has won a GRAND TOTAL OF:

ZERO GAMES! In his very brief NFL career.

Hey guys....Ronnie Brown is the #21 ranked free agent RB on the market...should we give him a second chance?

NHFINS

Dashi spouts, as Dashi spouts. This is the same guy that says soccer players are not athletes. Yet, he still says he's right 98% of the time.

This guy is ultra delusional. 98% right is proclamating yourself 2nd to GOD only. Lucky us, he's a Dolphin fan. Next, we'll be offering burnt sacrifices at his alter. I think not, but, I'm sure he'll tell us different.

Come to think of it, I could be wrong, but I never remember Devlin winning a preseason game. So, outside of a preseason being absolutely phenomenal, no one's dropping Matt Moore for Tom Devlin.

No matter what Lord Dashi says. :)

Sam...I hear ya, just playful banter imo...

Hey look David Garrard is the #13 ranked QB in free agency
Ted Ginn is available and ranked #18...so is Lex Hilliard at #8 FB
We've got old Fins guys littered throughout the market!

The barbies have no QB on the roster eH?

Sam i am. The problem with Moore is that while he provides security, he also has a horrible contract. Saving 5 million is enough to pay for a quality FA that could make a impact in every game, rather than Moore only coming in for 1.
It's the classic "more bang for your buck".
I like the idea of cutting Moore.

If we do cut Moore we should draft a Qb this year. Maybe 4th round.

Matt Moore will be the starter for the opener. Philbin has had it with Tannehill.

I'd like to see them keep Patterson and Carroll. Ask Patterson to 're-structure and sign Carroll. A team can't have too many CBs on the roster in today's game. We need lots of competition on the opposite side of Grimes and for the nickel and dime. Grimes, Patterson, Carroll and one of the young bucks sounds good to me. Now get the safety position right Hickey.

yes nh, take murray from georgia

I would keep Patterson, but for this season. Work heavily on grooming Taylor, and Davis so they can be ready if Patterson goes down or if he leaves.
But this is secondary talk, our true priority is O-line, and Monroe is should be our number 1 priority this offseason.

agree on monroe, gonna take a boat load but we need him

Mike Wallace hates Tannehill lol
