Burleson would have been insurance Dolphins still want

The interest in Nate Burleson by the Miami Dolphins was not so acute that they would get into a bidding war with the Cleveland Browns. Indeed, it was portrayed to me as a chance to investigate a solid veteran receiver who might be available at a relatively inexpensive price.

Burleson signed a one-year contract with Cleveland instead.

But the interest the Dolphins had raises some questions because it suggests the team saw the opportunity to purchase something that should not go unnoticed and now is unattended: Insurace for the health of Brandon Gibson and Brian Hartline.

Gibson and Hartline finished last season with knee injuries. Both are expected back for 2014 and, indeed, Hartline is conservatively expected back for June's mandatory minicamp, if not earlier. Gibson, who suffered a more serious patellar tendon tear in New England last October, is expected back at some point in training camp in late July and August.

But no amount of optimism about the recovery of two-thirds of the Miami starting receiver corps overshadows the fact the Dolphins felt a desire if not a need to shop for insurance (in the person of Burleson) against the possibility one of the two receivers (more likely Gibson) might not be ready for the 2014 season.

This raises the question whether the Dolphins will continue shopping for that insurance now that Burleson has gone to Cleveland? I believe the answer is yes. If another veteran receiver who the Dolphins think can be a good locker room add at a relatively cheap price comes along, I'd expect the Dolphins to show interest.

It speaks to having a secondary plan in case Plan A doesn't play out to script.

The script the Dolphins are operating under says Gibson and Hartline will be ready to play the 2014 regular season. Look for general manager Dennis Hickey to continue looking for opportunities to hedge his bet ... just in case the script doesn't go as planned.

Ah, LaCanfora... anyone who isn't a Patriot has red flags.

Meanwhile Albert is a reigning Pro bowl LT.

But I bet Gronkowski is set up for great things in New England even though he suffered the same injury as Keller.

I'm not on board so far with the o line but I think it will be fine after the draft. Where my problem lies is that I would've settled this before the draft and just take some of the numerous skill position players in this draft or a DT like Arnold or Hageman.

and the line will have to be a point of emphasis in the draft.

Well, no sh*t.

Will LaCanfora next be revealing that the sun is expected to rise in the East tomorrow?

Fraud, La Canfora is a clown and hates the Dolphins. Its probably best to just ignore what he writes.

JPAO, way too high of a price for Mike Evans even tho I love the guy.

I think I would only trade up for Lewan if he fell. A top player in this draft and a need. Beyond that I would take Shazier at 19 or trade down.

There is enough O-line depth I think we can get a decent guy for O-line in the second. So in round 1 I think I would go BPA or best playmaker available.

By the way ETF, mando doesn't do analysis...

I think he's actually on vacation by the sounds of things.

Check out Barry Jackson's column if you want to get any feel for the goings on within the team..

The Cuban janitor at Camp Davie is on vacation too...

IF THE CUBAN-BORN CUSTODIAN AT HQ IS ON VACATION

Then Mando's number of sources drops from 1 to 0.

(By the way I think Tony Nathan is Mando because last week he was sticking up for Mando and saying what a great surfer he is and that he is not fat. Only mando would know those things, no?)

But I just saw Oscar post yesterday.

I AM CHAD HENNE'S ONLY FAN I ADMIT IT

I take pleasure in talking about his stats and accomplishments.
I do not know what he looks like in swimming trunks nor do I know whether he can surf or not.

There is a difference between being a fan and having inside information.

So, you guys are still calling an unpaid furlough a "vacation?"

Whatever you want to believe, folks.

Mark,

We will have to disagree on this one. IMO he'll not have it easy at first when he gets in the NFL but by year end he'll be lighting some QB's up.

Will he be the best D player in this draft in year 1, who knows. There are too many variables that go into that. IMO he will be a player that teams will have to scheme against. But, if I were picking at 1, I'd take him without any hesitation.

How many double teams would you have like to seen against Williams for Buffalo last year?

ETF, wouldn't surprise me if one of these one trick ponies was Mando signing on occasionally.

Anyway, at the very least he seems very disinterested lately. At least in this blog.

Maybe he's channeling his interests into being a Twitter superstar now, who knows?

Like Machete, Mark in Toronto don't tweet...

(That one will go over everyone's head who hasn't seen Machete Kills)

Texas, exactly, he's capable of anything but I wouldn't be wagering anything on that guy. A lot of variables indeed - not a slam dunk.

As far as double teaming Williams, the one strip sack against the Bills in game one bothers me more than any other instance in this season. You think Sherman would have a safe pass play dialed up in that instance, not a play that takes 4 seconds to develop - or at least give the o line more help. Empty backfield, a broken down Clabo one on one v Mario, sheesh ... the one play that kept them out of the playoffs...

Hickey's watched 2013 game tape, he knows Tannehill has a tendancy to get his wr's killed. Wallace was the smartest wr of the crew. Dumb fans say Wallace wouldn't fight for the ball.

Wallace says he didn't come here to land on IR. Tannehill says get well soon guys.

Sam, is Gronkowski mad at Brady for landing him on the IR for the 136th time too?

Please, I can understand maybe Keller but nobody else was injured with a slightly off course throw. Even then that idiot from South Carolina (Swearinger) deserves the bulk of that blame. Whatever happened to respect to your opponents? You don't hit guys like that...

the one play that kept them out of the playoffs...

MIT

How do you figure this? It was the entire final game loss to NYJ that kept us out of the playoffs.

Remember, the Bills loss came before the final loss t NYJ. The common denominator? Tannehill landed total stink bombs against both bottom feeder qb's when having "PERFECT OPPORTUNITY" to indisputably show dolfans he's our qb of the future.

Instead, he shows he may be next inline of great choker qb's that have passed thru Miami.

Brady doesn't lay his receivers out like that. Gronk loves contact, therefore he'll always be an injury waiting to happen throughout his entire playing career.

Gronk only needs "tweaks" this mentality to increase his chances of staying healthy.

After consecutive stink bombs, against stink bomb qb's, with EVERYTHING(playoffs) on the line. Tannehill has MUCH TO PROVE to KNOWLEDGEBLE DOLFANS in 2014.

Tannehill has as much to do with this team not making 2013's playoffs, as anything else homer fans can piss into the wind. It's not good when your qb is more than a MARGINAL part of the problem.

In the very least, Tannehill was slightly more than a "marginal part of the problem".

HOWDY, FELLAS!

WELL, YOU WIN SOME AND YOU LOSE SOME BUT OUR MARLINS ARE STILL 5-2!

YESTERDAY, TRISH AND I GOT FALL DOWN WASTED BEFORE THE GAME. DIDN'T EVEN DO BREAKFAST SINCE WE WOKE UP 45 MINUTES BEFORE THE FIRST PITCH SO WE BOTH DOWNED FIVE SHOTS OF TEQUILA AND THEN SMOKED SOME OF HER SKUNK WEED IN THE CAR ON THE WAY TO THE PARK.

WE HAD JUST FINISHED A MAKEOUT SESSION WHEN THE PADRES HIT THAT GO AHEAD HOME RUN AND TRISH GOT SO UPSET THAT I GAVE HER LEFT BOOB A LITTLE SQUEEZE TO LET HER KNOW 'THINGS WILL BE ALRIGHT.'

WELL, WOULDN'T YOU KNOW SOME OLD PRUDE MADE A NASTY COMMENT ABOUT IT SO WHEN SHE GOT UP TO HIT THE LADIES ROOM I FOLLOWED HER INTO THE STALL AND KNEED HER IN THE GROIN. NEVER SAW HER AGAIN! HAW!!

LET'S BEAT WASHINGTON!

GO GO GO GO MARLINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are correct SAM I AM. Just think; Tannehill gets to come back this year and finish the job by getting the rest of the receiving core hurt and killed. The sad thing in all of this, is, the injury to the receivers does not have to come by a hit from a defender, but just the awkward twists and turns the receivers have to make to cast Tannehill's passes. There is not another coach in the league, who would even CONSIDER starting a qb who cannot throw the deep ball. Only in Miami folks does this movie play and continues to play when EVERYONE except the coaches can see that Tannehill is a backup at best. I felt so sorry for Mike Wallace. He left a qb who could get him the ball, easily when he was open, IN STRIDE; EVERYTIME, to a qb who can NEVER deliver, even when Walalce is WIDE OPEN. Can you imagine running at full speed and knowing that the ball could fall too short or if you slow down, then it could be too long or drop out of bounds. How can anyone run a route with confidence? PHILBIN, YOUR JOB IS ON THE LINE. PLEASE TRY THE OTHER QBS WITH THE STARTING WRS. It will become obvious to a monkey, who should be starting at qb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure Sam, sure.

I would get your personality disordeer checked out by the way...

Absolutely true, but it's VERY important to their fragile egos to believe otherwise.

Let them have their delusion. We can just laugh at it out of earshot.

Betty is coming over today to make pancakes!

Garn,

Yesterday on Walterfootball, it was Miami's turn in the mock draft and you got to vote who you thought would be their pick. Big surprise- Zach Martin got almost 77% of the vote from the 940 people who voted. Oddly, Su'a Filo was not one of the choices to vote for soooo- I wrote him in! I think Zach Martin is gone by pick 19 (as does Mel Kiper) and I see them drafting Su'a Filo and then possibly coming back and grabbing Bitonio or Richardson in round 2. I dont think Bitonio is there in the 3rd round. That said I absolutely love your 7 picks and would love for it to shake out this way.

Hey Zoology creep; the intelligent individuals like me, are already up to speed. It is the monkey evolutionists sub-humans like you who keep trying to force a circle into a square. You see the definition of monkey insanity, is to keep trying the same thing and expect a different results! We already saw what happened with Chad Henne. So, the coaches go and draft another Chad Henne named Chad Tannehill. I knew he was not the answer before he was drafted. I knew Henne was not the answer; though he is better than Tannehill; being that he can throw the deep ball. So, now 3 years later, just like with Henne; the coaches refuse to accept that they made a mistake, until it became a major imbarrassment to the organization, before they were FORCED to make a change. If a fair competition is held this offseason, Tannehill will not be the starter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THERE ARE 100 TIMES THEY HAVE SHOW THAT PLAY ON THE ESPN ABOUT MIKE WALLACE FROM LAST SEASON. IF THE REFAREE HAVE GOT IT RIGHT THEY WOULD HAD WON THE GAME BUT HE DIDNT!!

I ASK MARK IN TONONTO ABOUT THIS AND HE DIDNT REMEMBER IT BUT THEY ALSO SHOW IT ON THE TV POGROM AFTER THE SEASON THAT I SEEN ABOUT THE BAD CALLS OF THE NFL!!

If you don't believe in evolution, Bond, then perhaps you really shouldn't be commenting on "intelligence."

The offensive line is made up of Large, strong, quick-footed men who are mean, intelligent, teachable and willing to be part of a 5 man "team". If you mix those traits with a good coach, a good scheme and good skill players around them, you should have a playoff team.

I point these things out to illustrate that getting the O-line stocked with good players should not require a first round pick. Especially when you have a pro bowl center and LT already on board.

Elite wide receivers are MUCH harder to find, more fragile and have a shorter football lifespan. Does it make more sense to use the #1 pick on a RT when your #1 and #2 WR's had YAC's of 3.8 and 4.1 respectivley?

Torn ACL last week for Brandon Thomas. A little less depth on the O-line as far as contributors for next year go now.

The Dolphins have more money tied up in the WR position than any other unit on the team.

It would be extraordinarily stupid for them to spend a first round pick on that position, and there is absolutely no chance they would.

Their priorities are elsewhere, First and foremost the OL, followed by LB and Safety. WR is way down the list.

Preach it, EK... jsut because RT is the biggest hole on the roster does not mean it should require a 1st pick...

How many teams have 1st picks starting at RT? 3, 4?

Bad enough we had to use a first pick to fill the Center position when other teams are using UDFAs and late picks...

Dashi,
Gibson was the best receiver, or one of the 2 best till Tanny did his thing.
Did you not watch the first 1/2 of the season?

I do not care if we spent 10 Billion dollars on Wallace. How hard did he try to help the QB? His attitude is "throw it perfect or forget it". You don't stop trying just because you spent too much. You keep trying until you get it right. Especially at the skill positions.

Hey Country Crock, the real monkeys do not believe in evolution. So, why should any intelligent human? Have you ever seen a monkey sexually attracted to a human? NO! Why don't some humans occassionally produce a monkey or half monkey; if humans are descendants of monkeys? The Bible confirms that every creature reproduces from it's kind;ONLY! This is why humans cannot have relations with animals and produce offspring. This would not be the case if we were defendants of monkeys. Misguided scientists have even tried to replace organs from monkeys into humans during surgery and it has never worked and will never work, because humans are NOT descendants of monkeys! Evolution is a Satanic LIE!

This is the deepest Draft in WRs in many a Year. You could probably get a pretty good one down to the 4th RD.

Frank based kind of what JPAO posted this am. When I was going OT either 1st or 2nd there weren't any top G's to come back to. In this particular one I think Martin was gone so I reached for Filo. I didn't get my LB that I wanted as I would've had to reach too far so I grabbed a top rated S because on many mocks the guy I'd been targeting wasn't there in the 6th. But I think it was decent draft. Not sure Archer will be there in 7th.

But basically like the article said, RT is MUCH deeper than G. It's safe to say based on talent the 1st rd will be basically BPA while also filling a need. There are many TE, WR, S, CB, DE, DT needy teams with high grades for 2nd rd talent that I think undoubtedly there will almost have to be a quality RT available in 3rd. That's my perspective anyway.

Take a look at any mock & look at what they've selected in either 2nd, 3rd maybe a 4th(if it's not much of a move up) BUT that's what you'd be giving up in order to trade up. My opinion that's a hefty hefty price tag.

Dashi, STFU !

Has a clue(not),

So you want to spend 2 of the first 3 picks on defense after spending 4 of the first 5 on defense last year?

Especially when we had a serviceable defense and an inept Offense last year?

Do not put your hopes into being hired in a football management capacity anytime soon.

I don't care when we get a wr; just as long as he has 4.2 speed. He and Wallace on one side with Hartline on the other side would be too much to defend by any and all defenses! Make it happen Philbin!

Tought break for Thomas, I was a big fan of his. Still if he is there in the 3rd or 4th, he's worthwhile of picking up even if you ahve to wait a year. Guy will be a solid starter for years.

Anyway, most recent mock. Very similar to Garn's actually. I had the choice of either Buccannon or Bitonio in the 2nd. had to make sure I got a starter on o line so I went off board and took Bitonio. hate doing that because I gave up Buccannon who I think would be a S starter for us for a long time..

MIT,

It's a well known disorder for a few. BTW, its called "REAL WORLD MENTALITY". You should be so lucky to have this diagnosis too.

I know, I know....... The world is so fukked right now the fine line between fact and fiction is fast becoming severely blurred. What's wrong is right, what's right is wrong.

Denial is no longer a simple river in Egypt. It's fast becoming a stringent way of life with the masses.

Sam, when you write phrases like,

REAL WORLD MENTALITY

and

MUCH TO PROVE to KNOWLEDGEBLE DOLFANS in 2014

and even use caps to emphasize your point, you are coming across as both CONDESCENDING and AGGRESSIVE and I have time for neither here. I don't come here for that.

So have a nice day and you will get zero counter from me.

Just thought you should know why I will be silent to your attacks. Basically, you just aren't worth it.

Now if you want to play nice and exchange ideas I will be more than happy to do so.

But until then, you are put in "DOLPHINS IN DEPTH TIME OUT" for acting like an immature knob.

Sign Lebron James as a fa. His deepballs are far more accurate than Tannehill's.

MARK IN TORONTO

I SEEM TO GET THIS FEELING THAT YOU HAVE A DISTASTE FOR CRIMSON TIDE FOOTBALL......NO MOSELY NO CYRUS NO CLINTON DIX......WHAT GIVES

RTR

MIT - in all mocks I've done I had Donald fall to me once. If that happened @ draft & we passed..not sure what I'd do.

What mock did you use, I always have KPL avail in last round..

I've just been using fanspeak

Holy cow, what a pile of horse crap you've been fed you poor, ignorant fool.

Predictably, like most of you religious, mush-brained fruitcakes you don't even have the slightest CLUE about how evolution works. Apes and Homo Sapiens (that would be humans) have a common ANCESTOR stretching back millions of years--and those ancestral roots branched off into different, yet genetically related SPECIES.

You are NOT a "monkey" any more than a zebra is a horse, yet you ARE related and your DNA happens to be 99% identical to a chimpanzees, whether you want to accept it or not.

But I know. That "science" stuff is just too complicated and "Satanic," lol.

Tell you what. You teach your kids that the Earth is 6000 years old and that the dinosaurs were "dragons" who lived alongside man. You teach them that a 1000-year-old man built a wooden boat that housed two of each kind of the MILLIONS of animal species on Earth. Teach them that a guy lived in the mouth of a fish, too. Hey, maybe even that the Earth is flat and that the sun revolves around it (because after all, it was that evil SCIENCE that disproved those fictions).

Teach them all that while the Chinese and every other advancing society is teaching their kids the basics of SCIENCE grounded in FACTS.

And then I'll know who to thank for them leaving us in the dust economically over the next century.

You, sir, are a halfwit.

Sam, when you write phrases like,

Off the medication? Sure seems so. Reading way into a meaningless and elementary mentality football blog.

Aggressive? Condescending? For Christ sakes it's only a football blog. You are wayyyyyyyyyy..... over thinking meaningless bs that doesn't have power to shake a sick flea from a mangy dog's tail.

Your unreal world mentality really shines thru now. Be good brother.

Jet hater, I think Alabama players are perenially overrated. I like to see a combination of athleticism (i.e. outperformance in the major combine or pro day drills), size speed ratio, and track record of college production as draftees.

The only ones I can remember that fit the bill are Julio Jones and Chance Warmack.

Now, admittedly I did guess wrong on Eddie Lacy but in reality considering how many Alabama players were drafted high, I just see minimal returns for the sizeable investment.

did someone say trade this years Number 2 and next years Number 2 for Mike Evans has the world gone mad? That would be the single dumbest trade in NFL history. It would take this years 2nd and 4th probably to move up to 9.

Garn, I used Walter's board.

Now Walter has this theory that Donald will fall because he's smallish and can only play in certain schemes.

Well that may eb true - i wouldn't think we would eb a great fit in a 3-4 as a DE- Hageman would be a much better fit there.

but for us, the cincy bengals 4-3 which is derived from the TB cover 2 - a pass rushing DT is worth its weight in gold ... i.e. Warren Sapp and Gerald McCoy.. even John Randle when Tony Dungy was their DC...

Oh garn sorry, got off point ... anyway my personal belief is that Donald is a top player in this draft period and if he falls to us ... we should be obliged to take him needs be dammed...only player who is even remotely close to being around us that I would take over him is Lewan.

If Lewan falls to the teens, we need to trade up...

MARK IN TONONTO DO YOU REMEMBER THE PLAY I TALK ABOUTNOW WITH MIKE WALLACE?? YOU ARE HGERE NOW I SEE

What round do you guys see Coy Bacon and Jeff Van Note going in?

Mark,

If Donald falls that far, wouldn't we be better off to trade that pick to someone below us who NEEDS a DT and hope to pick up an extra third? We are pretty deep at that position.

LOL @ 1:44

I do not get my opinions from LaCanfora, Clayton, Walker, Kerwin, McShay or Mando - those guys get thier opinion from me.

While you were out blowing everybody in Dolphins gear last offseason I was measuring the accomplishments of those we lost vs those that we signed and I discovered that we lost more than we gained. I BROKE THAT STORY FIRST - those guys jumped on my saddle and of course Mando was the last to catch on.

This offseason Hickey has replaced Martin/Mckinney/incogs/Jerry/Clabo with Albert and 2 career backups.

That is the truth.
The truth hurts.

If everything I write about the team is negative then we need a clean sweep from top to bottom.

Bottoms Up LOL

MIT,

I really don't get it. 2ND coming of the bubonic plague has better odds of returning than any of us have of even sitting down and having a simple beer together. Yet, many here are so setback by the totally invisible wolf called internet posting.

It's a pass time, not an absolute. It's an exchange of ideas, not a grand jury indictment. You guys need learn to relax. That big bad wolf getting you so upset is invisible. It's a far more tangible reality to be upset with the wind's passing than overthinking what you read in here.

When most times it's only "OUR OWN FLAWED INTEPRETATION" of what we have read that's real culprit here. But, how dare we ever admit to self, that it is self itself that may be flawed.

This may be a little to deep for you, hopefully not. But, I have far more love of life and what includes, than to viciously and intentionally condescend and play king of alpha male games. Hopefully, so do you.
