Former UM QB Stephen Morris on the Dolphins radar

While much of their draft focus is rightly on offensive line, it should be noted the Dolphins have a long list of needs, wants and must haves. And while quarterback is neither a need nor a must have, it definitely is a want -- one which the team might fill with a local player.

The Dolphins had University of Miami quarterback Stephen Morris at their facility last week as one of the "locals" visits they're allowed. Coaches also had dinner with Morris the night before the visit. And it should be noted that general manager Dennis Hickey and coach Joe Philbin attended the University of Miami Pro Day where Morris showed his skills two weeks ago.

Morris, I'm told, has impressed several Dolphins people -- including general manager Dennis Hickey -- with his maturity, intelligence and overall approach.

So does this mean the team is going to draft Stephen Morris?

That is not certain. But it means Morris is on the radar and the Dolphins are doing their due diligence on him. And that's a good thing because the Dolphins are going to have to draft a QB soon enough or find one through free agency or some other means.

Well, Ryan Tannehill is the starter. There is no controversy or question about that.

And Matt Moore is well-liked and appreciated as the backup while Pat Devlin recently signed his exclusive rights tender to be the No. 3.

But Moore is in the final year of his contract and while his experience is valuable, paying $4 million per year or more for a backup quarterback isn't the most efficient use of salary cap space. Devlin, meanwhile, has been in the Dolphins program for three years and it seems he's no closer to challenging for the backup job than he was in 2011 when he arrived.

Indeed, it has not been a competition for the No. 2 job at all.

So the Dolphins can obviously be improved by adding a young, talented quarterback with a Pro caliber arm (like Morris or someone else) to push Devlin for the No. 3 job but also to make a strong push for the backup job as well after 2014.

Maybe Stephen Morris is that guy.

Anyway, check out some 2013 highlights:

Not a big fan of this guys. Better ptions out there.

Gy has good pyhsical tools but he's either dumb as rocks or a slow learner. Regardless, there are guys I like more.

Rick, at the same time, the owner has spoken glowingly of Taylor Lewan and he's Michigan's biggest fan ...

I'll be extremely disappointed if we trade away picks in this draft to move up on Lewan or anybody else.

My draft as of now
1. CJ Mosley
2. Ja'Wuan James
3. Phillip Gaines
4. Trai Turner
5. Dri Archer
6. Jonathan Dowling
7. Stephen Morris

can we just trade a player to move up? (aka Moore) or does it have to have a pick included?

Bitonio has moved up and I've heard or read that it is possible he sneaks into the late first, The Broncos have a need for OG.

Posted by: Texas_Dolfan | April 16, 2014 at 02:59 PM

Both SB teams are in need of OG's, if Sua-Filo gets to them one or the other takes him IMO ahead of Bitonio unless the Broncos take Sua-Filo and Carroll decides to replace his departed RT with Bitonio.

Here's a mock I just ran through with trades on Fanspeak.

IMO Richburg is similar to Schwenke in last years draft.

just read this

A deal between the Jets and Johnson could still be reached, but the running back is said to be interested in visiting more teams before deciding which club to join for 2014. There remain rumors that the Dolphins could still be interested in signing Johnson, despite Moreno joining the franchise. If Johnson sticks to his $5 million per season demands, however, the Dolphins would likely end those negotiations quickly.

I know that a lot of NHL players come from Canada and I have never questioned the manliness of a Canadian.

By the way do you ever watch the Kroll show? If so did you see the one where the guys says, "I'm not gay, i'm Canadian".

I like Moses in the second to address RT, hoping for a playmaker at LB in the first.

Really like:

On the fence about

So yeah texas, I'd take that draft easy.

Would have to go out and get a RT to compete with Fix in free agency but what the heck, I on't think that's as big a deal as people make it out to be.

As long as the guy plays better than Colombo?1st half of the year Clabo ... it should be fine. Patchan may even end up being a starter. guy is talented and fits perfectly, just has drability and at this point experience concerns due to all the college ball missed.

Trades ups are hard to call. Depends on what modest is. I would lean toward a trade down for the guard.

S.F. has a BIG need at F.S. and may need to leap frog the Colts to grab Pryor who fills that need nicely. They could also use a MLB not just because of Bowman's injury which will likely have him miss the 1st half of the Yr. but because in 2015 Kaep's CAP number will jump up real high! Then there stuck with two 10 Mil plus MLB's with one of them probably having to go depending on how Bowman comes back my money would be on keeping him over P.Willis but that depends on how he returns from a severe knee injury. That being the case I could see them shock all and take Shazier in trade up to pair with the one they keep. IMO they are most likely trade partner outside of Cleveland if they pass on the QB at pick-4 to grab one at pick-26 but they may need to get in front of Az. were Arians maybe looking QB if the Tackles are all off the boards to groom for 2015.

the maintenance guy
in u'r bldg. is from

I'm pretty sure that Seattle just won a SB with one tackle they signed off the BROWNS PS and another that was a 6th or 7th RD pick

Fukkin Schwenke... guy just shone so bright in last year's testing process ... he also had a lot of experience at UCLA... I don't know if Richburg is as physically gifted but he's good too.

Dallas Thomas better be really good to merit passing on Schwenke

ETF, don't know who Kroll is so I guess the answer is no I haven't.

is it better than Real Housewives of Miami ... I know you were a fan of that show...

Marc, pretty sure they won with Okung who was first pick and Unger who was a 2nd pick.. they also spent a first on Carpenter... so you need some high picks, definitely don't need more than 3 IMO.

he's from Uranus

You can mask a weak link on an Oline if it's well coached Mark . Good point there.

I like JuWaun James myself and wouldn't be upset if we took a LB in the 1st either.

Yeah, I checked out Patchan's durability issues and he's been shot, has been in 2 accidents riding a scooter, torn pectoral and a broken wrist while playing for Florida. Transferred to BC and played all 13 games as a 6th year Sr. Since Miami is in Florida maybe I should re-think that pick.

These CJ rumours garcia talks about, they can't be concrete... I mean Moreno and CJ? That would be weird.

Kroll show is on Comedy Central.

First 48/Miami is on Poverty central.

Ah, we don't have either of those channels ETF

Don;t have ESPN either and I'm not very upset about that...

The Dolphins are kidding themselves if they think Morris will hang around beyond round 4. The kid has an NFL arm and no attitude or problem history. He will be long gone drafted by a team in need. This guy is a sleeper at the QB position at the next level.

MIT i was just saying i just read that. nothing else ever.....

that would be a crazy 1 2 punch, but i don't think it will happen

No off the field issues but he has a serious talent issue.

CJ still looking to get paid at 5 Mil per and would be wise to wait till after the draft were teams who missed out on getting themselves a RB look to address the Pos. via the draft and maybe over-pay for what this market has dictated.

twatt, only meant that considering how thrifty they were on the o line and in dealing with Moreno that for them to spend $5M on CJ would be a weird spend.

And certainly then I would demand answeres for spending $10M on Flanagan (thanks ETF) and CJ, but unwilling to spend $6M on a grade a o lineman...

just saw that...... their you have it! now can we trade moore for a pick or what?

So he did sign with the Jets according to Wiki...

Not sure waiting until after the draft would've been wise anyway .. there would be at least 4 or 5 fewer jobs...

you can Garcia, but who would want him?

With man coverage and then wheeler can spy on CJ and Misi on Geno. Then can only run that formation 70-80 plays/game so we should be good to go.

that is the question MIT! i look to you guys for speculation and insight....

haha... wheeler...

Yeah , I can't think of anyone who would want Moore ... heck, i don't want him here...

CJ is a Jet. With all their cap money they only really added Decker, CJ, Vick, and swapped Patterson for Cro.

I'll take Hickey or Ireland over Idzik any day.

Chris Johnson is a NY JET !

YES !!!

Dolphin Killer

maybe offer Minn our 1st rd pick and moore to move up?....... is that enough?

Then I'm sure Matt Moore can also.

Oh Yes

Chris Johnson 2 yrs w the Jets!

Brady 2-3 more years w the Pats!

Tannehill released in 2015

Tannehill is a poor excuse for a pro QB.

Hey guys maybe next Yr. Goodell moves the draft back to April given he moved it to May this Yr. because of a Movie about the draft and the Movie flopped at the Box Office with a major thud! By the way talked to a friend who saw it and told me it wasn't even that believable and a yawner!

****Spoiler Alert*****

Apparently the movie centers around a G.M. who trades up to the 1st pick of the draft giving up 3 #1's to draft a LB! (Why the movie needed to be abot the Browns Org.) Then wants to trade a bunch of #2's to move up in that Rd as well. Aside from the always beautiful Jenifer Gardner saddled with Costner as her hero love interest who she has sex with in the players showers.

Oh Yes CJ2.5K

and more recently every year CJ1500

4 yrs in a row 2010,2011,2012,2013 CJ has earned aprox 1500 YDS Rushing/Receiving

The signing of CJ has nothing to do with us, the NYJ are not worried about us. They are also not waiting for Brady to retire. They are sending a mesage that they are going to kick the shht out of Brady and the Pats.

(we used to have a QB that felt the same way; a QB that beat the Pats by throwing > 50times/game in the game Lloyd Carr attended; a QB that taught himself a whole new offense during the strike and then came out on opening say 2011 and set the record with Tom Brady for most passing yards in a game. You remember Game 1 of 2011 on MNF? the game where BM dropped 2 TDs and Fasano lateralled the ball to the Pats and then all of the DBs rolled aound with mensrual cramps while the Pats had thier way). Good thing we don't have that QB anymore - he was everything that was wrong with our offense, defense and missed FG's.

can we just trade a player to move up? (aka Moore) or does it have to have a pick included?

A value chart is usually used to guage the value of a specific spot but it's just a tool. You can trade whatever you can get someone to take if the league approves it.

Steve Morris stunk in college!

NY JETs also rule the Dolphins for a decade

Sanchez to two AFC Championship games

Miami Dolphins have not been to the AFC Championship game that they lost since 1994

20 YRS for the fish and counting

maybe offer Minn our 1st rd pick and moore to move up?....... is that enough?

Posted by: garcia1972 | April 16, 2014 at 03:48 PM

Not in a Million years if Rick Speilman wants to keep his job! After wasting the 12th pick of the draft on over-reaching for Cristian Ponder it's really a miracle he has one today as it is!

You just wake brah?
You were in here all day and all night yesterday - a real ironMAN.

Sanchez is better than T-Puke

ETF, in his 4 years here, Henne beat the Pats exactly the same amount of times Tannehill has...

Henne is better than T-Puke

Haha, he just woke up ETF, he will now be on here for the next 15 hours.

Glad I leave the office in a half hour

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to wait for it to come to Redbox anyway. Agree with you on Jennifer Garner. Just saw her on a movie with Jamie Foxx. It was a decent movie on the terrorist thing. Can't recall the name.

The Jets will plug Chris Johnson the automatic 1500 YD per season rushing and receiving into a backfield that already has Ivory and Bilal Powell

Ivory rushed for 833 yards and three touchdowns on 182 carries last season, but the Jets have concerns about his durability. Hamstring issues hampered Ivory early last season and he has dealt with a variety of injuries during his career
Powell gained 697 yards and one touchdown on 176 carries last year, but tired as the season wore on

Chris Johnson has played in 16 games for the last five seasons and has missed just one game in his career
The three-time Pro Bowler did have knee surgery in January to repair a torn meniscus that he played with for most of last season and still gained 1500 yards

Kudos for Home
Once again NosrtaHomeUS calling the landing spot for two months ago for RB Chris Johnson
