Former UM QB Stephen Morris on the Dolphins radar

While much of their draft focus is rightly on offensive line, it should be noted the Dolphins have a long list of needs, wants and must haves. And while quarterback is neither a need nor a must have, it definitely is a want -- one which the team might fill with a local player.

The Dolphins had University of Miami quarterback Stephen Morris at their facility last week as one of the "locals" visits they're allowed. Coaches also had dinner with Morris the night before the visit. And it should be noted that general manager Dennis Hickey and coach Joe Philbin attended the University of Miami Pro Day where Morris showed his skills two weeks ago.

Morris, I'm told, has impressed several Dolphins people -- including general manager Dennis Hickey -- with his maturity, intelligence and overall approach.

So does this mean the team is going to draft Stephen Morris?

That is not certain. But it means Morris is on the radar and the Dolphins are doing their due diligence on him. And that's a good thing because the Dolphins are going to have to draft a QB soon enough or find one through free agency or some other means.

Why?

Well, Ryan Tannehill is the starter. There is no controversy or question about that.

And Matt Moore is well-liked and appreciated as the backup while Pat Devlin recently signed his exclusive rights tender to be the No. 3.

But Moore is in the final year of his contract and while his experience is valuable, paying $4 million per year or more for a backup quarterback isn't the most efficient use of salary cap space. Devlin, meanwhile, has been in the Dolphins program for three years and it seems he's no closer to challenging for the backup job than he was in 2011 when he arrived.

Indeed, it has not been a competition for the No. 2 job at all.

So the Dolphins can obviously be improved by adding a young, talented quarterback with a Pro caliber arm (like Morris or someone else) to push Devlin for the No. 3 job but also to make a strong push for the backup job as well after 2014.

Maybe Stephen Morris is that guy.

Anyway, check out some 2013 highlights:

Marc from nj

U sound like one of those wrinkled old prune players from the early seventy's
Those old fart players w flatulence problems reminiscing of days on the playground almost 50 years ago

No AFC Championship game appearance since 1994
and not even one playoff win since post season 1999

What are u cheering for?

I wish I could remember the name of the college QB who got hurt this season, he is the one Miami should be looking at. He would change everything for the better. Ugh, hate when that happens...I 'll think of it...

ETF is really Jesse Ventura?

We have the better record all time dumb ass 435-379. Jets 379-436 who's record is better dummy and I'm not old I am a young 47 and I'm not wrinkled anywhere oh yea I do remember our glory days do you joe Namath was a long time ago and how many division titles have you won,,,,,,,,,,none!!!!!!!!!

1st and foremost the Jets might be called N.Y. but there actually a Jersey team. You know were waste goes after you flush in the Big City. They were once upon a time the Queens Jets but have unofficially been the Jersey Jets since the late 80's. Even when a N.Y. team from Manhattan to Brooklyn onto the Bronx crowds never followed them but their beloved Giants. Have had a long history of weak to bad ownership and the Team ICON is a fall down drunk who sexually assualts female reporters on TV but yeah one classy Org.

This dude is terrible - career backup at best.

Zach Mettenberger.

Marc from nj - Don't forget about the 82' Championship game. Are the Jets still the NFL? Non-factors for so long.

Zach attack I love that kid

The aj duhe game that was wonderfull

I have a funny story I'm about to have knee surgery on fri. And my surgeon is the Jets team doctor

I was just waiting for Home's masterbation session about CJ to end lol.

well ur screwed marc, never walk again

Only one football team in NY (or NJ for that matter) and that's the Giants.
Its not even up for debate.

Even fireman ed left

I know he brought me in his office and the walls were covered with jets pictures all autographed from Wesley walker to joe klecko the whole gang

It's unbelievable what the NY JETs are doing this off season and then thru the draft

This is an amazing and exciting year to be a NY JET fan

Home is gonna take his meds and paint his face green this evening

Wow

CJ2K (sigh)

Darkoak, when you are done with ETF Home and all the BJ Boys, would you at least clean up afterwards?

Home = Daytona Sam.

Too obvious..........and pathetic.

jets team might of been good 8 years ago. hilarious how they never learn with vick,cj. guys are complete garbage

Nice post Dusty.

Vick's best days are behind him. As are CJ's.

Decker won't be nearly as effective with Vick throwing him the ball instead of Manning-Ha Ha.

Vick compared to Manning.......? Pssssssfpt! Decker won't be a factor except for the occasional jump ball.

Rex is desperate and he'll try ANYTHING at this point. Hilariously pathetic.

Trade Down Mock

1. Ryan Shazier (To play mlb)
2A Carlos Hyde
2B Morgan Moses
3. Traded top of 2nd for Hyde
4. Phillip Gaines cb or Tre Boston safety (Who's avail?)

5. Jay Prosh
6. Stephen Morris qb (Projects here)
7. Dri Archer ( if there?)

Stephen Morris, the Fins new designated "3rd and 35" QB.

The criticisms that he couldn't read defenses are only partially correct. Often forced into throwing every down due to the Hurricanes unbelievably bad defense, the results were sometimes noir so pretty. When Duke Johnson got hurt, this became the norm.
Morris LOOKS the part better than all the other QB's save Bortles.
If Murray is still there round 3, I hope the Fins go for him.

It's all meaningless, as the Jets pickups of Chris Johnson and Vick will make them and the Bills tied for 2nd best in the Est. The Fins, at 8-8 again, will be again looking up.

no way sam, if theres one guy i want in this draft is murray from georgia

Mark, as you are Canadian, I'll assume you are a bit less aware of American college football. Tennessee plays in , by far the =best Conference in college, the SEC. That conference won 8 straight national championships, and barely lost last year.
Some of the very best coaches coach teams in that conference.
Also, their coach was in his first year, no QB, and his predecessor was a decent recruiter, but horrible coach. Several players transferred as well.

BTW, I wouldn't as yet crown any of the Volunteer players as anymore than good. The best player out of the state colleges will be Jordan Hunter, wide receiver out of Vanderbilt. He might not be the first drafted, but will be better than Golden Tate.

Morris on the Dolphins radar P-L-E-A-S-E

AARON MURRAY = SIZE DOESN'T MATTER

Logan Thomas QB VT = 6'6" 260 lbs 3 year starter =
3 BCS Bowls = you can't coach size.

CHINA BABY! CHINA BABY! CHINA BABY!

I JUST HUNG UP WITH BRUCE VENTURE, HE SAID

Size matters.

Think Logan Thomas.
Think Kelvin Benjamin.

ima ur right on morris, he was horrible, no thanks on him. far as jets and bills go, thats comical. bills least growing with young guys. jets are just complete garbage. worst secondary in nfl. offense is horrible. feel bad for ryan, great coach

logan thomas, lol kid is horrible when it comes to nfl.

IMA,
I think you mean jordan matthews, and all the scouts agree that the Vols linemen will be nfl starters, maybe not stars, but solid starters....

It will be amazing when we beat the jets down

Hey Odin guess who isn't the worst QB in football on 3rd down, and isn't the worst deep passer in the NFL?

I'll give you a hint and it begins with Ryan and ends with Tannehill.

The trolls own the blog? Shirley you jest?

Stephen morris, Really? I guess hickey and failbin didn't watch any games from last season or the bowl game or the were sleeping while the senior bowl was being played. Morris is another jacory Harris. Junk!

Just watch what ryan will do with a running game and protection in the passing game

I am really high on Aaron Murray from Georgia this kid has poise this is our guy to develope

ryan doesnt have a running game, and def has no protection or qb

Its hilarious how all the so called fans on this blog are just looking for instant gratification and overlooking the facts of past history...Even the great qb's we all desire needed seasoning and experience and maturity to be successful...Drew Brees, ok with SD, but not until signing with n.o. did he become prolific, brady had a running game and awesome defense carry him, peyton was 2-14 to start his career, etc ....years ago qb's held a clipboard for 5 years before even seeing the field...give our boy RT some time, a better line and team around him and watch him progress and grow....Go Fins

Dusty why so negative look into the light

Ahmen

just real marc, only way to discuss things. not sure if jets have one single thing about them positive outside rex ryan. thats simply a very bad football team

Posted by: IMAWriter | April 16, 2014 at 06:24 PM

Not 100% correct! In 2012 due to a very bad D he was forced into throwing the ball alot and had enough success that people forget there was even Heisman talk regarding Morris for the 2013 Season. At the onset of 2013 he looked the part from the Spring into running over our first opponent of the Yr. putting up 70 plus points. Then he came up against the Gators and on the onset lit them up throwing for a 70 Yd TD to Dorsett with the Gators and their talented DB's led by Purifoy in man coverage.

After that the Gators went into zone coverages mixing in some cover-2 and it stumped Morris to the point he really looked lost on the field. That day the Hurricanes played inspired D all day long and caused the Gators to turn it over 6 times that afternoon. The one thing Morris always had and enjoyed while at the U was a running game which the Gators snuffed out that day given Duke had a terrible game thrusting it on Morris and the mixed bag of coverages he was seeing and he failed miserably!

I believe he didn't have 200 Yds of passing that day which says alot given he had one pass play of close to 70 to Dorsett in the 1st Qrt. After that every week you saw teams doing this very thing to Miami and it caused Morris to have a long lousy Yr. for himself. He has the tools physically to do everything you want your QB to do I just don't think he has it upstairs to breakdown what he sees on the go. Maybe some good Coaching up as a project can yield a future but won't hold my breath on it either.

the Sharts will still go 6-10, while The Dolphins will be 11-5

Posted by: Marc from nj | April 16, 2014 at 06:56 PM

I believe this kid can succeed at the next level as well. My one glaring red flag are all the injuries. I've watched him throughout his College career at Ga. and like him and his RB T.Gurley alot.

(secretly I root for them because the life long homer in me remembers H.C. Mark Richt as a player in the Jim Kelly ERA who played in 81 after Kelly got hurt on a scramble)

Again the issue for me are the injuries and there was one every Yr. while at Georgia were he was always playing through something. If a QB has a tough time staying on the field in College then I worry about him as a Pro were the beating is more severe!

I also like Conner Shaw from South Carolina all he does is win

Go cocks

Johnny Manziel Available Mock

1. Johnny Manziel
2. Morgan Moses
3. Dion Bailey S USC
4. Phillip Gaines CB
5. Tyler Gaffney RB
6. Stephen Morris
7. D'Anthony Thomas KR

Is Manziel a reach at 19?

Man I can't take it anymore 21 days till draft day

I think we take a corner first ,you can never have enough corners and you can't rely on 2nd year players that never played then go tackle in round two

Posted by: SAM I AM | April 16, 2014 at 07:23 PM

I'd throw my TV through the sliding doors in my house!

Manziel would be an excellent value pick for the Dolphins. In the 3rd rd.

1 Gilbert or Denard
2 Morgan Moses or tiny Richardson
3 Jenkins te wash st.
4 steen og Alabama
5 west RB
6 seantral ot miami

Is Manziel a reach at 19?

Posted by: Darkoak | April 16, 2014 at 07:47 PM

If he's there at our pick and someone hasn't traded up with another team in front of us I'd trade the pick. I believe Manziel in the right system can succeed in the NFL but I'm not ready to throw Tannehill under the bus just yet! I want to see him with the run game working behind a better OL 1st!

Manziel is all hype. I really don't see him doing much against NFL defenses. I'd be surprised if he even stays healthy.

Just spitballing...........

1.Calvin Pryor S-Lou
2.Joel Bitonio T-Nevada
3.Chris Borland ILB-Wisconsin
4.Trai Turner G-LSU
5.Aaron Murray QB-Georgia
6-Isaiah Crowell RB-Bama State
7.Trey Burton WR-Florida

I would jump at the chance to trade back out of 19 if there's nothing of value left and pick up another 2 that would be the best move because of the value in the second round
