Former UM QB Stephen Morris on the Dolphins radar

While much of their draft focus is rightly on offensive line, it should be noted the Dolphins have a long list of needs, wants and must haves. And while quarterback is neither a need nor a must have, it definitely is a want -- one which the team might fill with a local player.

The Dolphins had University of Miami quarterback Stephen Morris at their facility last week as one of the "locals" visits they're allowed. Coaches also had dinner with Morris the night before the visit. And it should be noted that general manager Dennis Hickey and coach Joe Philbin attended the University of Miami Pro Day where Morris showed his skills two weeks ago.

Morris, I'm told, has impressed several Dolphins people -- including general manager Dennis Hickey -- with his maturity, intelligence and overall approach.

So does this mean the team is going to draft Stephen Morris?

That is not certain. But it means Morris is on the radar and the Dolphins are doing their due diligence on him. And that's a good thing because the Dolphins are going to have to draft a QB soon enough or find one through free agency or some other means.

Why?

Well, Ryan Tannehill is the starter. There is no controversy or question about that.

And Matt Moore is well-liked and appreciated as the backup while Pat Devlin recently signed his exclusive rights tender to be the No. 3.

But Moore is in the final year of his contract and while his experience is valuable, paying $4 million per year or more for a backup quarterback isn't the most efficient use of salary cap space. Devlin, meanwhile, has been in the Dolphins program for three years and it seems he's no closer to challenging for the backup job than he was in 2011 when he arrived.

Indeed, it has not been a competition for the No. 2 job at all.

So the Dolphins can obviously be improved by adding a young, talented quarterback with a Pro caliber arm (like Morris or someone else) to push Devlin for the No. 3 job but also to make a strong push for the backup job as well after 2014.

Maybe Stephen Morris is that guy.

Anyway, check out some 2013 highlights:

T-Puke cant hit water from a boat.

oscar,
If football leaves Miami it will be because the destination city is offering so much more depreciation than Miami that Ross can't say no to it.

DEPRECIATION + REVENUE SHARING = REASONS TO OWN NFL TEAM

HoHo!

I wish Ross would move his stinkin team and stop embarrassing S Fla.

I mean, you can probably kiss American Football's Asss goodbye from Miami in a few years.

The City is a Football factory that's been feeding the entire NCAA landscape for Yrs. now and you think it's going to disappear because David Beckham wants to build a Stadium in the Port?! For starters local business in the area isn't going to let him build the Stadium they already tried sending him to Little Havana to play (and be a tennant) of Loria. I suspect the Central and South American communities would support local Soccer but don't think it overtakes either Football or Basketball in the hearts of every other demographic locally.

What Johnson can bring to the Jets is a good running back who still has big-play potential. Johnson gained at least 1,000 yards in each of his six NFL seasons and hasn't missed a game since his rookie year of 2008. He averaged at least 4 yards per carry each season until last year, when he just missed at 3.9.

Johnson complained about his role off and on with the Titans, but he shouldn't have many concerns with the Jets, although Ivory should get some touches too after a very promising 2013 season. Still, given Rex Ryan's style and Smith's inexperience at quarterback, Johnson should have all the carries he can handle. Another 1,000-yard season shouldn't be too tough for Johnson to get, although it's probably not wise to bet on him reaching 2,000 again.

Anti-bullying bill supported by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross likely to fail.

Doesnt everthing Ross does in sports fail?

Dr. Canosa,

I need your help.
My PSA score continues to rise and so the Urologist says the prostate cancer will need treatment by the end of the year.
The cortisone injection that I got in my knee a month ago has completely worn off and the next step is a series of 3 lubricating injections over a 2 week period.
My cervical spondylosis continues to worsen - for the past month my right arm radiates with numbness from my armpit down to my thumb about 3 times every hour.
We just raised my fluoxetine up to 40 mg.

Do you think I would qualify for disability?

Miami became a basketball town 4-5 years ago. The Heat sell out every game. Football in Miami is an afterthought.

Miguel/Oscar's Mom,

Do you know what Rainbow Bridge & Isle of Wight are?

I completely disagree! The HEAT sell out every night because LeBron James is here in his Prime and there working off of back-to-back Titles. By comparison in the tail end of Shula through JJ and in throughout the Wannstedt ERA the Dolphins sold out (tough to do in Miami) every week for 15 Yrs.! It didn't end till Wannstedt's disastrous 04 campaign were he left Mid-Season and we were 0-6 at one point.

Think about that! They say Baseball in Miami works because of the Latin Community but even after the World Series wins the Marlins can never get a respectable crowd unless the American League Yankees are in Town. Yet the Dolphins with the promise of simply competing for the Playoffs sold out consistantly! In 08 Parcells and the Wild Cat get people excited again and what happened? Huge crowds back at the Stadium!

The fans just feel jilted and are suspect of the direction of the team till you show them a winner again then they'll be back in droves you watch!!

fin4life I'm a Dolphins fan but even I understand the fan base locally is fair weather primarily. That said because of the climate there is lots to do year round, so baking at Sun Life watching a loss probably isn't high on the fair weather fans list.

It is true when the wins start to come even " have we fired Philbin yet" Zonk will be lining up for tickets.

Isle of Wight was one of the best harness racehorses ever.

Out all fairness to Stephen Morris he played injured most of his 2013 season and He is a very good QB My Opinion. Yes would beat out Dolphins Back ups by the sixth regular season game.

Stephen Morris bring to Camp undrafted Free Agent. Or 7th Rounder.

32 Miami Quarterbacks since Dan Marino

NO offense to Tannehill (Offensive line should get Fixed.

Can he take the Sacks this season and stay healthy?
The Back up Quarterbacks are Back ups?

Miami needs to get serious about QB Back up?

Round Six

6. Tajh Boyd (threw for 11,904 yards and 107 touchdowns in 40 career games at Clemson, BEST QB in this Draft.

Jordan Lynch QB Northern Illinois Huskies Jordan Lynch ( height 6-0, wt. 216lbs, 2013 season 2892 yards,24 TD JORDAN He is the REAL DEAL Under RADAR

Bring to camp as undrafted free agents.

Missouri QB James Franklin Missouri

lead his team to defeat Johnny Manziel Texas A&M to play in the SEC Championship Game against Auburn 2013.

ONLY MY OPINION A BACK SHOULD BE THERE TO TAKE YOUR JOB WHEN INJURED, POOR PERFORMANCE, OR MAYBE JUST HAVING A BAD GAME ETC.

Both the Dolphins and the Hurricanes being below average have turned Miami into a basketball town. Basketball is the rage. Of course it could change in the future but its been basketball for years now.

It is true when the wins start to come even " have we fired Philbin yet" Zonk will be lining up for tickets.

Absolutely. But not until there is a complete turnaround.

That said because of the climate there is lots to do year round,
Posted by: Darkoak | April 16, 2014 at 11:21 PM

Same old illogical reasoning posted here a million times. In the cold climates, there are plenty of better things to do than sit still in freezing weather...Skiing skating, movies, watch the game in a warm sports bar or in the comfort of your home......we should have an easier time selling out, not a harder time.

Nobody wants to pay good money for a crap product.

Why do people in Miami think it is the only sports town in the country that has nightlife, strip bars, and things to do? Silly. Most football towns have much more to offer.

Posted by: Haiti Hal | April 16, 2014 at 11:47 PM

More to do in S Florida than anywhere in the world.

Shula 73 has not travelled much, if at all.

FL is good for beach, sport fishing...otherwise it can't compete culturally with any great city, not even close. Not to mention it is often much too hot and humid to be outside doing anything. South Beach is a tiny, trendy artificial pocket. Most cities have plenty of upscale nightlife areas far hipper. Miami is no better than #10 in this country, worldwide it can't compete.

The majority of tourism in FL is Disney, artificial nonsense fantasy land for kids. That tells you how great Havana North is, it ain't. No es.

Nah, I've been all over the world. You left out about 10-15 things S Fla is good for but I'll leave it at that. Its truly paradise here.

90% of Miami is a 3rd world uneducated immigrant hell hole. Anyone with class move up to Palm Beach county long ago.

Shula, I've lived on and off here many times. Lived all over the country, mostly coastal areas. Worked abroad as well. I'll take Buenos Aires, Auckland, Vancouver Barcelona and many other spots 100 times over silly Miami.

You can convince yourself it's great here, but you can't convince me. It isn't, and it has been going down hill for 30 years straight. I'm just back caring for an elderly parent, then I'm gone for good.

Haiti Hal doth protest too much.

I flipped up a piece of metal and it ruined my tire.

The odds that Morris is an NFL QB compared to me hitting that tire destroyer is minute. In other words, Morris sux.

Morris is a horrible passer.

If TH has problems with deep accuracy, Morris has problems with any accuracy. He can't even throw up in the toilet.

================================================

ROTFLMAO!

Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalph!

Morris is WORSE than Tannehill.

Ross probably likes Morris cause he'll play for peanuts. It doesnt matter to Ross if he's a loser.

Odin.
It's funny -ok.
But it's not that funny:

The NFL should force Ross to sell if he wont spend the money to field a competitve team.

Morris in any consideration as a pro QB is a joke.

Steve Morris is FAR WORSE than Pat White.

I WOULDNT DRAFT MORRIS IN THE 100TH ROUND. HE WAS PATHETIC IN COLLEGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hickey drafts Morris--
Hickey gets hit by an errant bullet.

Stephen Morris? Can we find a worse QB? LOL

Coltrane @ 1:01

That's going a little too far yo, no one is getting shot.

Just an analogy--Morris is that bad. I could find an UFA better than that guy.

CALL ME A "HOMER" BUT YES SIGN MORRIS BUT ONLY AFTER ALL OTHER NEEDS HAVE BEEN MET. THIS IS SHAPING UP TO BE A GOOD YEAR FOR MIAMI FOOTBALL.. I ACTUALLY THINK BOTH THE DOLPHINS AND CANES WIN 10/11 GAMES EACH AND BOTH WILL WIN IN JANUARY.. WISHFUL THINKING? YES! POSSIBLE ? VERY!! LIKELY ? YES FINALLY BUT ONLY IF BOTH TEAMS STOP LOSING TO TEAMS THAT THEY SUPPOSE TO BEAT (AKA BUFFALO WITH BACKUP QB) TWICE !! OR DUKE OR A TERRIBLE VA TECH TEAM AT HOME) CUT THAT CRAP OUT AND YES 10/11 WINS EASY FOR BOTH. IN ACC THIS YEAR OTHER THAN THE OBVIOUS WHICH TEAM IS HEAD/SHOULDERS BETTER THAN CANES? SURE ANYONE CAN BEAT ANYONE BUT AS FAR AS ON PAPER WHO BESIDES FSU? NO ONE. I DO NOT COUNT LOUISVILLE YET BUT EVEN IF YOU DO THEY DO NOT HAVE TEDDY AND HAVE NOT FACED "THE DUKE" AS FAR AS THE DOLPHINS GO I ONLY WORRY ABOUT ONE THING WINNING RECORD IN AFC EAST!! NOT .500 BUT ABOVE.500 RECORD BECAUSE THIS WILL LEAD TO A 10 WIN SEASON.. OTHER THAN DENVER/ NE WHICH TEAMS ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE FINS ?? GO DOWN THE LIST AND YOU WILL SEE EITHER THE DOLPHINS BEAT THEM OR HAD CHANCE TO TO SO(RAVENS) IN NFC THAT'S DIFFERENNT BUT IT'S ONLY 4 GAMES ONLY NEED SPLIT 2-2 OR 3-1 AND THAT BRINKS US BACK TO OTHER AFC TEAMS.. UPGRADE THE OFFENSE TO SCORE 10 MORE PYS PER GAME AND FINS WIN 10/11 EAST.. WISHFUL THINKING ? MAYBE BUT FINS HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH TALENT AND " DUMB ASS SHERMAN" IS GONE..

TK @ 1:33

Stop swallowing man

Wow, TK; that's alot to read.

I would agree that we have a few positions of need. I see our main need to be one of application of talent more than need of talent.

QB is our biggest need.

Its nice when the GM isn't tied to the QB....

Ireland drafted Tanne out of desperation...a move that STUNK of a GM trying to give the BOSS a a reason to keep his job....

and the worst part of it was that he had a SURE-FIRE QB still on the board in the 3rd round in 2011 with the fall of MALLETT....

Just cause Ireland made the bed doesn't mean Hickey has to lay in it....

Good for the FINS...draft a QB early....

If we wind up with a BREES/RIVERS situation....good for us....if he unseats Tanne...good for us....if Tanne is better for it...than good for us....

The worst case scenario is that we start the season with Tanne as the UNCHALLENGED starter....and Moore happily sitting on the bench collecting his 5 MIL.....

We have the worst and cheapest QB's in football. Thanks Ross.

Morris was pure crap in college. Why would any team want junk?

Agreed Kris, but not this guy. I'd rather go after the Eastern Illinois kid (Jimmy G). Yeah yeah, no competition they say, but he broke all Romo's records in school.

It's a good idea to bring in QB competition for an established vet.

You do not draft a QB to push your 2nd yr developing starting QB whom you're hoping gets you over the hump. You'd be asking for big QB controversy which is never a healthy situation. A young QB needs all confidence & support he can get.

You draft a QB next yr, if at end of 2014 you decide Thill is not your future. This is how it's done.

He didn't take the Canes anywhere, but Morris throws beautiful downfield passes. if he's around in the later rounds, great. Hopefully Hickey takes a QB EVERY draft until the dolphins have a franchise quarterback.

Speaking of the NCAA, did you all know they are tax exempt? As well as the NFL. No wonder the rest of us pay so much in taxes.

DC....

Yeah...I don't mean the kid from UM in particular....but like you said...a good prospect overall...

Only reason Hickey is looking at Morris is because he's local per league rules.
There are a ton of decent QB's in this draft, but we are paying Moore $4M to be a back up, that leaves only the #3 spot open for competition.

Hickey drafts a QB in the late rounds to force a little competition on Devlin...will it be Morris?

Garoppolo's stats were grossly inflated by the shotgun spread system they played and he did not take snaps under center. He's a project at best.
Don't his weaknesses remind you of a QB already on the roster?
"Must develope pocket awareness and internal clock to feel pressure. Holds onto the ball too long, will take unnecessary hits."

If Hickey was impressed with Morris....

THEN HICKEY SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is not one Qb in this draft that would unseat Tannehill in 2014 ... not one.

The interest in Morris just confirms that Ross wont pay for top players. Pray for new ownership.

TOO FUNNY! LMAO!!

I agree with Garn .. the Dolphins would do best to put all their coaching resources behind Tannehill, not have some high round hot shot sitting around distracting resources and paying the media's bills by giving them endless fodder to ask other players about and causing division. Can we put this in perspective, this kid is not a disaster - he's won 15 games with an extremely flawed roster on every side of the ball and has a 4,000 yard season and a 25 td season under his belt.

I know everyone wants an Andreew Luck and peyton manning right out of the box qb ready to go but that's not the way it works 99.9 times out of 100.
