Shelley Smith: Line has potential 'to be really good'

Shelley Smith will be asked to both pass protect and run-block on the Dolphins offensive line -- either at left or right guard, which has not be determined yet -- but make no mistake, Smith loves run blocking over pass blocking.

"For me, a big thing is I try to play hard for a whole sixty minutes," Smith said today. "I try to be consistent with what I do. I'm sure most offensive linemen you'd talk to would say they love run-blocking and I love run-blocking."

Smith is not a certain starter, at least coaches have given him no guarantees. He'll have to earn his spot in a competition. But he's got the added advantage of being a scheme fit, according to the Dolphins.

"We had some knowledge of Shelley through John Benton, our head offensive line coach, who worked with Shelley," said general manager Dennis Hickey. "He had nothing but good things to say about Shelley not only as a player but as a person, which is always important for us. And as we watched the film and say the fit for the scheme we'll be employing under [offensive coordinator] Bill Lazor, we just like the fit."

Hickey noted Smith's "athleticism, his ability to climb to the second level and do a lot of things we're going to ask him to do." Hickey called Smith "an ascending player."

Smith, who visited the Giants and Patriots, said he believed the Dolphins were the best fit for him.

"In the zone blocking scheme, particularly how it was in Houston, they kind of looked for offensive linemen that maybe were more athletic, that can move and open up the holes on the outside zone by stretching out wide," Smith said. "I could fit there a little bit."

The Dolphins have added two offensive lineman so far this offseason after giving up a franchise record and league-leading 58 sacks last year. So far, so good, Smith said.

"There's a lot of potential," he said, "for the line to be really good."

Puhlease,

I understand you man. But you also said @539 on this blog that hickey "hasn't done jack f-cking shyte". That my friend, is not true.

Frank....it isn't true until confirmed true. You don't get it. Analysis on paper is futile. My point was not to bash him, but to say equally no accolades can be given to him until he gets results. There are no measurable results between February and August.

Frank, on paper everyone loved the Wallace signing. He lived up to nobody's expectations. You are letting your emotions dominate your sense of reason.

I have no agenda on Hickey. I hope he does well. He has to show it first. Paper trading is a suckers game.

See, on the end runs, especially sweeps, when there are not many People there, it is a good idea to have your Gs, like Fuzzy Thurston and Jerry Kramer or like Kuetchenberg and Larry Little, in front of the ball carrier. Yes?

How often does a star FA go to another team and be a dud? Quite often. This can't be argued.

I'm trying to connect the dots for you slower folks.

ALBERT AND MORENO WERE GOOD SIGNINGS

And are an upgrade to the position. Delmas and Finnegan - 2 shhtty players released by shhtty teams. Smith not as good as Incogs, Evans not as good as Solai.
Assuming Hickey hits on 2 stud OL starters in the draft then I think our offense is better and our defense is worse.
On paper of course.

Daytona, as autistic as he is, is a Genius at Football trivia, but at nothing else in Life.

It is just a matter of superiority of your Players at the point of attack against an inferiority of theirs at that same point. This has been known for some time now.

I have to agree with this. Hickey may have gotten two +'s and two -'s which in the end = 0. Only time will tell. No amount of evangelism will change things.

Personally I think Soliai was hands down our biggest loss. Please don't feed me the 4-3, 3-4 argument. That guy is a beast not easily replaceable. Atlanta gave him big money for a reason.

ETF,

Pretty much agree on Finnegan. Idk on Shelly. He is a better system fit than Cogs but is an unknown.

I like the signing of Mitchell considering they were never going to pay Soliai that much.

I agree with Puhtona at 8:11PM.

Good thing SHELLEY Smith wasnt on the team with Incognitobrain LOL

Ross was too cheap to pay Soliai.

2 watt, you always have an undying desire to answer my posts.

Maybe P78 was right. Do you work in my building?

I'm tellin ya Mark, watch your back!

Also, sorry I had to run the other day after I posted about Tannehill and the other thing. I didn't get to read if you responded and would go back but I don't remember which post it was in. lol

Puhlease,

I just disagree with your semantics. He HAS done something! I personally think it will be an improved team. I get exactly what you are saying- until the games are played we don't know if MIA will be improved this year. All we can do is praise him or curse him "on paper" and I like what he has done "on paper". We will
Find out what happens in September.

Were you kicked in the head by a mule as a child? I can't figure out why your posts make no sense at all. It's as if you don't even follow the team because you are so far removed from reality.

Patterson was AWESOME for the Phins. So in your warped mind that must mean the coaches were awesome? He was great WHEN HE WASN'T HURT. Did you know he missed most of the season with a groin injury? But when he was on the field he was a turnover machine?

So you're saying the coaches in Miami were awesome last year? Another ridiculous notion seeing how even Philbin has admitted to many mistakes. Get a freaking clue would you?

Oscar

Meet me at the Cabrini Center and I'll kick your ass. :)

Puhlease,

I think that atl overpaid for Soliai. On paper, Mitchell might be an upgrade. You just don't know yet. Right? Just using your logic.

The Dolphins payed Solai tons of cash over the years and got what in return?

Who's the guy that complained about Hyde running the ball down his throat?
Well get ready because he's going to the Pats.
Miami's pitiful line backers will be out matched.

Hell, I avoid confrontations all the time. Most People are not worth it.

Oscar

I shall be watching very closely from the Cabrini Center inbetween my autism treatments. :)

Oscar

Last train counted had 117 cars, 1 caboose, 3 cars with Canosa advertisement, and 113 cars were spray painted with gang graffiti. :)

There is no treatment for Autism yet, man. You are fukkkked.

Oscar

Usually when I say that I am leaving, Im not really leaving, just means a new train is passing by. I have to count the box cars, just cant help myself. :)

Oscar

Hold on, think I hear a train coming...

Excuse me? I used to count the grains of sand on the sea shore. I no longer do this. :)

Sam and dashi are 9 out of 10 posters here.

However, there are some very new genetic techniques that will put almost an end to psychiatric Illness and Deviations of all kinds like que-ers and lesbians, sociopaths and psychopaths. So, finally, we will be at peace.

If Sam and dashi are 9 out of 10 posters here. Then obviously the 10th poster is you. Obviously.

I hear you, son. You are still fukked.

Oscar everyone knows this therapy, it isn't new. It's called a bullet to any portion of the brain.

It works.

SAM

Statistics show it is time for you to do your usual about face. Do you still think there is a chance in hell we use our first pick on Hyde? Or are you already high on someone else?

If not today, then tomorrow.

Normally, pre draft Sam is super high on a player for 15 days. Then he changes his mind and laughs at anyone high on the player he liked only yesterday.

Not necessarily, Sam, The technique is offered to whomever wants it, except in very dangerous sociopaths and psychopaths in which it is obligatory. You have the right to refuse it and keep on living your own existence.

Son, its a Dr Jeckyl team, so why not bring aboard a "Mr. Hyde"? Then the transformation will be complete.

Oscar

You're a doctor. Have you met Dr. Jeckyl or Mr. Hyde?

Oscar

I do not understand words such as "obligatory".

We are very sophisticated in these Times, Sam, we don't use bullets per se. Don't you see?

SAM will never laugh at a Player I like. He might be Autistic but not Dumb.

Oscar

When you were a child did your parents allow you to walk around the house using words such as obligatory?

We can tell by SAM's comment at 9:31PM that he is a resentido social and was born and raised in the gutter.

Sam, any chance you go back to your old name Dying Bird?

?

Oscar

Have you ever had a feecees derailment?

:P

You can't pretend here. Trying only makes you look feeble like dash boy

Personally I thot Albert could've been signed for cheaper. 800k min. Face it Albert really didn't want to play anywhere else but Miami, factoring in his age & injury history we overpaid but only marginally & we were negotiating from a point of weakness, we really needed a LT. Initially I wanted Monroe more but I don't think Monroe was ever going to leave Bal without being severely overpaid. More I've researched Albert since we've signed him more I feel we got the best player.
Biggest concern for Albert was "problem player" but that attitude may have been misguided. I listened to an interview from a Chiefs correspondent when asked "tell us something about Albert that we might not know about" reply.."well the 1st thing that I think is somewhat of a misconception out there about Brandon is he's a leader. He's a man of few words, so when he speaks the rest of the guys listen. The offensive linemen look up to Brandon in the facility & try's to help them get better in the film room" that's paraphrased but pretty close..

Starks & Grimes no brainers But very team favourable contracts..

Mitchell & Shelly are gambles but calculated ones..

Big Paul will be missed but even he knew he'd be gone(house was sold long before signed with Atl) 11.5Mil? As one media wrote "was ridiculous"

Delmas smart prove it deal. If healthy it's an upgrade.

Finnegan? Compared to the rest of Hickeys deals, we're all left scratching our heads on this one. Not sure on his play its self but he is ONLY 1season removed from good #'s in STL in 2012. @ 5.5Mil I don't think you can call it a prove it deal yet that's what Grimes received last yr I believe. Only thing I can say is I hope Philbin & Hickey see something there & they obviously feel they do or wouldn't have signed him.

One definitely good thing with Delmas & Finnegan is their energy & passion is definitely an upgrade & if the team finds itself in a lull anytime in 2014 like last 2 games of 2013 these guys will rah rah to get the team goin..

Agree. I dont read books here.

Garn, long run on sentences and 3rd grade grammar don't work here. Nobody is going to read that babble past the second sentence.

The majority of our society is illiterate. Too many adults can't write above a 3rd grade level.

Just what the government wanted.

yup, all democrats voting for free cheese

resentido social= resentful toward others that have had better luck in being born and raised in better stratus of Society. The World is still full of those and we have to increase the Riches to a point where everybody is satisfied. NOT distribute the Riches, as that will take us all to the Hole.

Unless you have something to say, best not to write anything. Or in your case, attempt to write.
