Turner played OT in college, must be G in NFL

One of the problems the Dolphins have had with player development the past few years is they don't always have a clear vision about their talent.

Just prior to this draft, the Dolphins weren't sure if they were going to use 2013 draft pick Dallas Thomas as a guard or a tackle. So a year after picking him, having him in training camp and, indeed, getting him started in this year's offseason program, last year's third-round pick didn't know his position. (He should be a guard, folks).

Dannell Ellerbe, signed to a big-money contract to play middle linebacker last year, may be moving outside this year because that work he did at MLB was no bueno.

Koa Misi was drafted as a 3-4 outside linebacker but he's been taking repetitions as a middle linebacker now -- an experiment that has been tried multiple times during his time with the team. Jared Odrick? Drafted as a 3-4 DE. Now a 4-3 DT.

Dion Jordan? Is he a defensive end? Is he an outside linebacker? What's the vision for him?

And that brings me to Billy Turner, a Dolphins third-round selection in this most recent draft.

Turner played left tackle at North Dakota State as the Bisons won three consecutive FCS (small school) championships. Some teams projected him as a right tackle prior to the draft.

The Dolphins have not said where they want him to settle in.

Here's an idea: The Dolphins should settle Turner in at guard and ...

The Dolphins drafted a right tackle in the first round in Ja'Wuan James. They signed left tackle Branden Albert to a huge contract in free agency.

They have a hole at guard.

Turner, by all accounts, has a nasty personality on the field. He plays with good (should improve) pad level. He's a guard, folks.

The Dolphins do not need him competing with fellow rookie James at RT. It's a waste of repetitions. It asks too much to have him learn both spots right now. It doesn't maximize his chances to contribute early.

If I'm the Dolphins, I do with James and Turner what Don Shula tried multiple times in the 1990s: He picked Richmond Webb to play left tackle and Keith Sims to play left guard in 1990 and that's what the two rookies did every single repetition in practice and every single down in the preseason.

Voila, offensive line issues solved.

Shula tried a similar approach in 1995. He picked Billy Milner to play right tackle and Andrew Greene to play right guard. He didn't mess with position flexibility. He had a vision for both and gave each a chance to maximize at the positions they were selected to play.

It didn't work. Greene was not a brilliant guy or a very hard worker. Bust. Milner's talent was not up to par and he was gone from the team a year later.

But the point is they failed based on their talent level rather than a lack of vision or difficult circumstances created by the team plugging them in here or there.

The Dolphins have picked offensive tackle Billy Turner this draft. Make him a guard. Stick with the conviction. Now, release the hounds.

Let Turner hunt.

I question Manziel's ability to be a pocket passer and game manager. I do not see the maturity needed for him to realize that his college days are over and being a team player and model citizen is part of the NFL. Just his hand motions (money) on draft day and remarks about the other teams regretting not picking him sooner was enough to tell me he does not believe the saying " You have to admit there is a problem before you can find a solution".

Turner gave up ZERO SACKS for the entire season on his level of play. No worries about his NFL transition and ability to start day 1 at OG. :)

The Browns have passed the Dolphins by. Didnt they sign the GM we wanted also? Hmmmmm

NeMo, interesting point on Quinn. he has Bruce Irvin, buried in the depth chart at DE - flips him to OLB and voila impact...

Sounds different than someone we know...

Honestly if we are bad this year and Philbin gets fired, Hickey need to go too. We need the HC and GM to be joined at the hip.

No offense, but this is a totally ridiculous statement. Philbin and Hickey are no way joined at the hip. Hickey did not hire Philbin and Hickey is only in his 1st yr at GM. What you do is allow Hickey to hire "HIS HC", then if both fail both hit the door.

If Philbin fails in 2014, but "Hickey's draft picks" enjoy mild to moderate success, how can you justify kicking out too after only 1 season? Only scenario for Hickey getting the boot, his 2014 draft class has to be a rousing failure.

Man you guys are depresssing today. Can we maybe play a game or two in 2014 before we start looking for a new regime?

I was as pissed as anybody the second half of last season but they've owned up to it, let some people go, and brought in some new ones, lets see how it plays out.

And I do agree it has to be a complete sweep and Ross needs to remove himself if the season goes to kaka.

Be more like Bob Kraft, Ross, not Jerry Jones...

Mr Football is the second coming of Fran Tarkenton except better.

Stat said MANZ had like a 72 % completion rate asa pocket passer and believe that stat was while under pressure

Folks said the same thing bout running QBs Newton, Vick, Kaep, etc, etc, etc

Now if YG thinks it's a bad idea, then it must be the right one!

Turner basically blocked high school kids at that level

on this bust pick

Since Tannehill has no pocket awareness and cannot throw deep
Geez lets worry about Manz

Heck, either one is way better than Ross.

Sam, I know they aren't joined at the hip. I would strongly prefer that the GM and HC are. I'm saying that if one goes, both should go in my opinion. I could still see Ross giving them another chance if we go 8-8 again though.

Mark, about Quinn, I almost put he is the opposite of Coyle in my post haha.

Dolphins went 2-4 in the div last season

and that was lucky the Pats had no playas that game and Brady lost it

So Tann basically won 1 div game last season

This season Home expecting Tann
1-5 in the div

I could still see Ross giving them another chance if we go 8-8 again though.

Ross is thrilled if his scrubs go 8-8.

Rick, sorry being depressing. Just talking some BS in the middle of the offseason. I hope everything works out and this discussion has no merit !

Owner doesn't have to justify anything. He can do whatever he wants.

If god forbid history repeats and Ross is again in the position of asking "how do I fix this", there would probably be considerable consensus for a total house cleaning.

Dolphins would've been 3-3 and in the playoffs if Kraft and the NFL mafia didn't make up new rules WWF style to take that first game from us.

Aint that Great !

Impossible! Sam likes "white guys". :)

I always pictured Home looking like Sam's "friend"

Michael Sam was just named the worldwide spokesman for VASELINE.

Hernandez indicted and held without bail.

Cam Newton 64 passing TDs and 28 Rushing TDs in 3 yrs

Tannehill benched after the bye week and never returns as an NFL starter in only 3yrs

Always pictured Mark looking like Sam's friends floating turd

cam newton 13-19 first 2 years thill 15-17

Significant upgrades from last year have been made to our offense along with our new OC, but I am not seeing much with our LB squad on defense. Does not matter what our offense looks like, if we cannot contain the short game on defense, it's going to be a tough season given our schedule.

Yeah and Cam Newton had a running game and receivers...

Lazor's 5 Wide = Clay, Wallace, Landry, Hartline and Gibson.
Which no team in the league can cover because you can't cover everyone.

But you must have a line that can keep the pocket clean thus extended the play.
We know where battles are won..

This blog hits it on the head. When was the last time the Dolphins didn't play musical chairs on the offensive line? Any idiot should know you can't bounce these guys around from position to position and expect them to be effective players. Don Shula was a smart and decisive coach. He led the Dolphins through the only part of their history worth remembering (except for 1986 to 1989). I have no confidence in this coach. I think he gets one more year. Anything worse than 10-6 and he should be gone. I don't know why anyone would invest time and money to follow this team. I am so tired of this mediocrity. The time is now Dolphins leadership - get it right - or else.... No pressure....

Jerry Rice had a slow 40 yard dash time at the combine and look at his records and wasnt he voted the best player to ever play

great article and really captures the value of vision with continuity in role, especially the offensive line. Having played there in college, it takes time, repetition and strong communications to be effective on the line. If you keep jerking players around, like the Fins seem to do, it is incredibility difficult to build that cohesiveness.

Those of us saying James was a reach are not saying he isn't a good player. I believe he will be a good starter but also believe we could have moved back a few spots (we had two offers), picked up an extra pick and still drafted James. I believe that would have made this draft much better.
