Turner played OT in college, must be G in NFL

One of the problems the Dolphins have had with player development the past few years is they don't always have a clear vision about their talent.

Just prior to this draft, the Dolphins weren't sure if they were going to use 2013 draft pick Dallas Thomas as a guard or a tackle. So a year after picking him, having him in training camp and, indeed, getting him started in this year's offseason program, last year's third-round pick didn't know his position. (He should be a guard, folks).

Dannell Ellerbe, signed to a big-money contract to play middle linebacker last year, may be moving outside this year because that work he did at MLB was no bueno.

Koa Misi was drafted as a 3-4 outside linebacker but he's been taking repetitions as a middle linebacker now -- an experiment that has been tried multiple times during his time with the team. Jared Odrick? Drafted as a 3-4 DE. Now a 4-3 DT.

Dion Jordan? Is he a defensive end? Is he an outside linebacker? What's the vision for him?

And that brings me to Billy Turner, a Dolphins third-round selection in this most recent draft.

Turner played left tackle at North Dakota State as the Bisons won three consecutive FCS (small school) championships. Some teams projected him as a right tackle prior to the draft.

The Dolphins have not said where they want him to settle in.

Here's an idea: The Dolphins should settle Turner in at guard and ...

Keep.

Him.

There.

The Dolphins drafted a right tackle in the first round in Ja'Wuan James. They signed left tackle Branden Albert to a huge contract in free agency.

They have a hole at guard.

Turner, by all accounts, has a nasty personality on the field. He plays with good (should improve) pad level. He's a guard, folks.

The Dolphins do not need him competing with fellow rookie James at RT. It's a waste of repetitions. It asks too much to have him learn both spots right now. It doesn't maximize his chances to contribute early.

If I'm the Dolphins, I do with James and Turner what Don Shula tried multiple times in the 1990s: He picked Richmond Webb to play left tackle and Keith Sims to play left guard in 1990 and that's what the two rookies did every single repetition in practice and every single down in the preseason.

Voila, offensive line issues solved.

Shula tried a similar approach in 1995. He picked Billy Milner to play right tackle and Andrew Greene to play right guard. He didn't mess with position flexibility. He had a vision for both and gave each a chance to maximize at the positions they were selected to play.

It didn't work. Greene was not a brilliant guy or a very hard worker. Bust. Milner's talent was not up to par and he was gone from the team a year later.

But the point is they failed based on their talent level rather than a lack of vision or difficult circumstances created by the team plugging them in here or there.

The Dolphins have picked offensive tackle Billy Turner this draft. Make him a guard. Stick with the conviction. Now, release the hounds.

Let Turner hunt.

John Benton is our new O-Line coach...guy did wonders down in Houston with the Texans and totally revamped their running game.

Turner was a good Marine and solid motivator, but he fell short in getting the line to work together as a unit.

John Benton, Bill Lazor...two new names that will have a huge impact on our offense this season.

I agree with Salguero and have come to the realization that the issue was not Ireland (I never thought it was) as much as Philbin. I'm just not convinced this guy is a very good coach and I'm quite certain he is not a very good leader. He's indecisive and he doesn't have the pulse of his team. More importantly, he (nor his staff) doesn't know how to maximize talent. But then again, who else are you going to get to come and coach for this buffoon of an owner.

Philbin, Lazor and the O-Line coach need to be decisive and let the players they acquire play settle in and play the position they put them in. I'm all for a player being groom at another position but Dallas Thomas still hasn't been assigned a permanant position! Com'On Man. It's your jobs to put players in the right position to excel and succeed at one particular position not take three years to figure it out. Stop being so cute Philbin Like Mando said put them in position from day one and let them flourish!!

Well, this goes back to my evaluation of Joe Philbin and his staff by the middle of his 2nd year: He doesn't know what the hell he's doing.

Before the end of their 1st season, I knew Sherman was a big problem. But I had hopes that maybe either through self-evaluation and seeking advice from his X-boss M McCarthy in GB...maybe, just maybe he could improve.

Well folks as the saying goes, it is what it is. Philbin is no HC and never will be

I can see it.

There's a lot of homers and a lot of haters on this blog. But Tannehill was significantly better in year year 2 then he was as a rookie. He did this all while having no run game or pass pro.

It's not out of the question he can become a Pro Bowl Qb. His biggest question mark for me would be can he adjust to a new offense? Was that his ceiling last year under a system he was so familiar with? I'd say it wasn't. I think Tannehill played fairly well despite the coaching.

Traded down twice for two extra picks, one used on Billy Turner, the other used on Jordy Tripp. Then still was able to get Jarvis Landry.

2ND RD =

1. Jarvis Landry
2. Billy Turner

The 2nd rd can not be judged by Jarvis Landry alone. It netted us 3 not 1 player.

It was my thinking that Philbin could survive as a HC for a few years IF he had a good staff. AND had the good sense to defer to their judgement.

Unless I miss my guess, Lazor will vastly improve the O. Hope he has enough time to help Tannehill. Simply because Philbin didn't have the balls to fire Zac Taylor

Many say Hickey should have traded down in 1st and taken James. Even if he did, probably the best he gets is a 3rd rd pick.

What if he did and James wasn't there?

Basically, Hickey traded down twice in 2nd rd, still getting the 3rd pick he would have gotten had he traded down in the 1st, while picking up an extra 5th rd pick too.

Hickey actually got better value by trading down twice in the 2nd rd vs had he traded down once in the 1st rd.

So, those thinking James was a bit of a reach, remember Hickey more than made up for it by the work he did in the 2nd rd. Getting 2 extra picks vs the 1 he would have gotten trading down in the 1st rd and potentially losing James.

Walter has us drafting Georgia RB Todd Gurley in the 1st. Guy looks like hershel Walker... well, alright then.

I like the pick as is for Ja'Wuan James. He's a good player. A good player isn't a reach.

I liked what Hickey did with trading down as well. He got the player he wanted. I would've personally rather had Hyde when we had the chance but Miami didn't even draft a RB so they are apparently confident in Moreno and Miller.

It's exactly right. You're just looking at it wrong. Without trading near the top of the 3rd, Hickey never gets Turner. So I count it as the pick that got Turner.

The extra 5th netted Jordy Tripp, when all of the trading down dust settled we got Jarvis Landry. That' why I count the 2nd rd trade down action as netting us 3 players we drafted as a direct result of it.

1. Jarvis Landry
2. Billy Turner(Trading up/Extra pick)
3. Jordy Tripp(Extra pick)

They parlayed their 2nd and 3rd rd picks into

a lower 2nd, a higher 3rd and an extra 5th.

That's one extra player.

The fact is Hickey went for 5 for $1 in later rounds. He could have had James, Su'a Filo (a true top shelf guard) and O-line would be fixed for next couple of years. Not to mention getting a 3rd pic that would have been more of a sure thing than these others. Screw 5th, 6th & 7th round.

But now we have a RT that's pretty much of a sure thing and the rest?

You're countying on a numerical basis alone. I get what you're saying, but apparently you aren't quite getting what Im saying.

I get the on a numerical value it's only 1 extra player. Im saying it netted us a player we never would have gotten had we not used the other extra pick to "OBTAIN HIM SPECIFICALLY".

I'm not counting apples, I'm using specifics. I count Turner as the "3rd player" in "SPECIFIC" not "NUMERICAL TERM". Do you get what Im saying now?

I think that this is Miami's plan all along now going forward... and thats what they plan on doing. But people like you and Mando have to say it before it happens so when they do go that route . Yall can say the dolphins and Philbin listened to what you said.

i agree cocoa, I was one fo the few proponents of trading up. Specifically for Lewan but also would've understood for Zach martin too. The Dolphins can go on telling the world James is a true bona fide 1st round o line talent.

I'm not buying it.

There are four guys that were first round the whole way... Robinson, Matthews, Lewan, and Martin.

James only became a first round talent after it appeared none of the others would fall out. Most of the draft world didn;t ahve a big difference in draft grades between james and Turner for msot of this process.

I will accept if I have to that James is a leg it first round pick but don't even try telling me that he's close to the other four.

He wasn't even the left tackle his college team....

Been watching all of these so-called top tier OG come out for the last few years, none of them are making the pro bowl their first years. Last year:

Jonathan Cooper 1st guard taken 10th overall goes down with season ending knee injury.

Chance Warmack goes #18, very good but no close to a pro bowl selection.

Both these guys would have been rated above Suafilo. He may have been the 3rd or 4th OG selected had he been in 2013's draft. It's not like we passed on John Hannah, one of the greatest OG's of all time.

If anyone can shed light on how Hickey turned the original 2nd pick into three players like YG originally said, please help.

Exactly! And Hickey wasn't searching for a LT after signing Albert this offseason. Hickey drafted exactly what he was looking for:
