Expanded playoffs would have been good for Philbin

NFL owners today tabled the idea of playoff expansion for 2014 and will take up the matter again at their next meeting in October, according to multiple media reports out of Atlanta where the owners are meeting.

It's not the best news for Joe Philbin.

Well, anyone with any sense of where the Dolphins are as a franchise understands Philbin, entering his third season with the team, is coaching for his job in 2014.

Owner Stephen Ross has been loyal to his coach in siding with Philbin versus former general manager Jeff Ireland after their rift last season. The owner told candidates during his search for a new GM that they had to accept Philbin and even turned away from candidates he liked because they wanted the ability to move on from Philbin.

And Ross made sure new GM Dennis Hickey understood he must work hand-in-hand with Philbin, who now seems to be more empowered than ever, in order to be considered a success with the Dolphins.

But here's the catch: Ross, despite his unfettered public confidence in Philbin and optimism about the coming season, also has confided to multiple people that if 2014 does not unfold quite the way he hopes, it may be time for a reset.

And a reset would involve getting a new head coach.

It remains unclear exactly what parameters Ross would have for needing or resisting change.

If the Dolphins make the playoffs, it is as near a certainty as one can have that Philbin would continue as coach. On the other hand, If the Dolphins' record takes a step back from a year ago and the team fails to the make the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year, the likelihood of a Ross reset would be very high.

That much seems clear.

But what about the gray areas of what might happen in 2014?

Would a winning record alone that does not include a playoff appearance appease the owner? Would another 8-8 record but another year out of the playoffs be acceptable?

Bottom line is if the Dolphins make the playoffs, no matter what their record or results in the postseason, Philbin can be confident of coming back for 2015.

And that is why an expanded playoff field that includes 14 instead of 12 teams would have been in the coach's interest. With an expanded field, the Dolphins might have overcome the hurdles they haven't been able to overcome since 2008.

But with the traditional 12-team postseason (six teams per conference) now the league plan, the Dolphins will have to overcome not only division rivals New England, Buffalo and New York for a postseason berth, but also recent playoff contenders Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore, San Diego, Denver, Indianapolis and Cincinnati.

The Dolphins finished third in the AFC East in 2013.

To escalate the process, Ross is backing off on his request for relief from annual property taxes totaling about $4 million, according to a source with the team.

Instead, Ross has been in discussion with Miami-Dade County and city officials on a proposal to be compensated for delivering major sporting events to the stadium, including Super Bowls, college football championship games and international soccer matches.

Ross had met with opposition from Miami-Dade, the school system and Miami Gardens on his desire to avoid paying property taxes on the stadium.

The Heat would win with or without Lebron. Thats how good they are.

Sell the team? He could very well just move the team. Then what you got?

Bob, you can go on believing sports lotteries are not pre determined. You can go on thinking officiating in the NBA is not there to assist the favorite teams.

I'm nto buying it. All sports are fixed to some degree.

Even the beloved NFl.

How else to explain how against the patriots, how a fumble by Brady and a 30 yard loss turns into a first and goal...

Them's the break, right??

Anyway, I have no idea what the Cavs will do or how feasible it is to entice lebron back. personally, I don;t think he can go back to Cleveland. the smart thing for the Cavs to do is draft Wiggins and have him and Irving be their one and two. bennett and thompson will be very nice role players.

kevin Love is a nice player but he's no stud.

Jim, lebron took the cavs to two 60+ win seasons last 2 seasons he was their. The following year he left the cavs only won 23 games. That would be the heat if he left.

Nonsense Stephen Ross has spent money for a winner and is an owner with a passion to win. He may have made a mistake demanding the Dolphins reach for a franchise QB but that will be determined this season. Moreover going with Philbin may have been a mistake but that also is subject to this seasons results. Ross stayed with Ireland longer than he should have. Ireland was not qualified to build a team. He will learn from his mistakes and move in the right direction.

Mark, I'm a Lakers fan so it should have been rigger to help my Lakers.or Boston which bigger markets. Bennett is a bust. And lebron going back to Cleveland is now not out of the question. Wiggins and Parker our both nice additions, but having kyrie, Kevin love, And lebron makes them immediate contenders. They would also have a young upcoming Dion waiters. Of and if lebron decided to leave and the heat stink next year, the cavs own the heat 2015 1st round pick

What is exactly lebron's offseason status.

I've seen both that he will be available and he will not.

Anyway, I hope every team kills themselves going after the guys this year.

Me? I'd be loading up for Durant next year.

And yes, the lottery was fixed. 100% - no doubt. Team wins the lottery 3 of 4 years after losing james in such a disgraceful manner and so much negative goodwill was done to the Cavalier franchise in the manner which he left. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out man...

Lebron can either opt out this summer and be a FA, or he can play the last year of his contract and become a FA after next summer.
Yea well what does the NBA have to gain for rigging it for a small market team. It is about the ratings. Just don't make sense and I don't buy they feel bad lebron left. They already won it 2 other times. At least with the Brady thing rating go up with patriots.

James is not going anywhere. Basketball just like NFL football is about chemistry. The Heat have chemistry and that's why they win. Pat Riley is one of the best executives in pro sports. He is not going to let James leave the Heat family of players. James is a free agent after the season. James makes enough with advertising and being a spokesperson. It's not going to be about more money or going to a town like LA.

promichael, understand that james is about getting as much rings as possible. The heat are older than the steelers D. they have no money. Cavs has money, options, trade assests, and more youthfull. Another option Lebron can take is to pair up with melo in NY under phil Jackson.

Bob Lee youre truly dumber than your name indicates...

So leave a potential championship roster for a young roster who cant even make the playoffs in the pathetic east. Leave a known Superstar player in Wade older or not for an injury prone Irving who cant even take his team to the playoffs..

Go back to play for an owner who ripped him? Allen, Battier, Jj, Rashard Lewis are all comin off the books next season.

No one want to live or play in that ces pool Cleaveland area Bob sorry.

@bob lee swagger. Oh No! We suck again!! ha ha lol

Of course it makes sense Bob, that franchise was worthless after Lebron left. You know how many hundreds of millions in Goodwill were lost when Lebron left and especially how he left in that WWF style interview?

Boston and LA can always buy teams. Cleveland can't.

It makes perfect sense actually.

Bob Lee do you undertsnad that Vets win championship in the NBA not young guys???

Lebron is 29 next season and he wants to play with 22 year old whos balls havent even drop.. These guys cant even make the playoffs in the east and you think having the #1 pick will entice Lebron to leave??!!

Put down the crack pipe buddy..

Yeah, more than the youthful team of the Cavs, I think it's more about the bad blood left in Cleveland. I don't see that scenario playing out at all.

I think my Raptors would've had a better chance if they could've beat Brooklyn and got more exposure. You want to talk young talent on Cleveland - there is much better young talent on the Raptors and it's not far from his home in Cleveland and a huge market. But I don't see it happening now at all.

Florida residence pay NO STATE INCOME TAX and still whine and complain about having to contribute to anything. Wonder why Florida schools are some of the worst in the country. Wake up you South Florida DIKKHOLES! Not everything is a hand out! If you want nice things and places you have to PAY FOR THEM! What a bunch of ungrateful, whiney, cheapskate jerkoffs you all are.

Regular, ha ha lol. you think I'm dumb huh? Kyrie is way younger than wade and pairing up with a potential big 3 in Cleveland with Irving, James, Love is championship right there for 2-3 years.
The cavs were 6 wins away from making the playoffs. they were 17-16 last half of the season. Hiring Mike brown was a mistake and a lot of the reason they did not make the playoffs.
Oh, and Lebron still lives in Akron, ohio.

You idiots do realize every single team in the league HAS to pay a large percentage of their cap. There is no tanking the cap to pocket money you frickin retards.

get real, some teams don't spend at all.

I am on the fence as far as the Dolphins being spenders but the Raiders? They had like $50M in cap room...

Mark in Toronto, Lebron established good friendship with Kyrie when Kyrie was in highschool. Kyrie participated in Lebrons summer basketball camp at The university of Akron along with Tristan Thompson.

BY the way, they did spend a lot this summer tho, good for them., Raiders are back on track

Personally I can see Lebron joining the knicks with melo and phil Jackson. He always wanted to play in NY spotlight

Bob, if it happens, you can tell me you told me so. But I wouldn;t bet on it.

Bob how often was Irving injured?? For a young guy why is Irving injured so much?? Does Irving or Love know the intensity of a playoff game??? How dumb are you??

Lebron hometown is Akkron of coarse he has a soft spot for AKRON not the Cavs dumbo! Some of you think you can just throw some stars players together and WALA theyre a championship contendor???

Youre post are getting even more asinine.

If Lebron wanted the Ny spotlight he would of went in 2010. Lmao. Im
Ready to talk football this guy is ridicolous.

a regular, with the caliber of Lebron teaming up with love and irving. it wouldn't matter about intensity of a playoff game. he would make them 2 so much greater. And no it's not out of the question dumby.

That's an excellent point about age but Pat Riley will do what he has to do to keep Wade, Bosh and James together. I see the Heat going after a power forward in the draft and then making some trades to get younger. Bosh is not that old and Wade still has two more good years if he stays healthy. If your an LA fan I can see hoping and praying for LA to be the next stop for James. However Kobe is not a young man so do not forget that in your quest for a championship in LA.

Mark, Do you think the OL have improved from last season or will the Phins be maving more signing to improve. The Ts spots looks to be solidified not sure about the Guards

Promichael I don't think Lebron will go to the lakers, the 3 options I think he will go either this summer or next is Clippers, Knicks, or Cavs. but not the Lakers. I wanted the Lakers get #1 pick to draft wiggins. I do think pat riley will do anything to keep LeBron but with the cap room you got cut ties with bosh and figure out what you can do with and aging wade.

If they're not ragging on the Dolphins they're ragging on the other Miami sports teams, standard trolling.

Looked at another way, it's actually a good thing for the dolphins assuming you're one of the fans who has no faith in philbin and doesn't want to delay a reset any longer. Sneaking into the playoffs with an 8-8 or 9-7 record which wouldn't have been good enough in a normal year and exiting after one playoff game would, as Mando says, ensure Philbin his job for a couple more years -- which quite arguably might be the worst possible thing for this franchise.

It was good knowing you Joe....

Reel Dolphin In Sight w Home

Actually it wasn't....

You DISGRACED the team by ALLOWING (I know...I know...you "know nothing") bullugate to get to the level it did....

I can't wait for you to be shown the door....and this years schedule will guarantee it happens....Look for Aaron Rodgers....among others...to help usher you to the door....

Mark in Toronto

You need to all apply for jobs with the Dolphins!

Ross pockets 30 mill of cap money every year

I indicated that Riley will keep the big 3 together. Arison has already gone public to indicate that all three will be back. So let's not speculate. An owner does not come out like that unless he is positive of keeping the big 3 together and building or getting younger around them.

Good morning Dolphins fans.
I think we should cut TE Egnew and give Lynch a shot.
Waddaya think?

Good morning Dolphins fans.
I think we should cut TE Egnew and give Lynch a shot.
Waddaya think?
change egnew
to tannehill
and change lynch
to Jensen
and yes

I'd like to give Lynch a shot, but our scouts have a pretty hard time drafting TEs, WRs, and, well, any skill position player at that. We all thought Egnew was the next Gronk and that didn't work out. Then we got excited when Dustin Keller came in cause we'd have a legit TE and he blew out his knee. Then we got excited (because we felt we had to) that Sims might be replacing Egnew and we'd have a somewhat legit TE. Now it's Lynch's turn to try and captivate us and give us a legit TE.

I'm not going to get my hopes up on this guy just yet. At least we have Clay to fall back on.

Promichael, I understand what you are saying. But doesn't mean it will happen. If lebron doesn't leave this summer he will most likely next summer.

Hey everyone just to let you know 2 watt and homes are the same poser. Don't be fooled. Lol.

LOL! dbo is jealous and thinks I'm 2watt. What a tool

Posted by: MiamiD20 | May 21, 2014 at 10:31 AM

At Missouri with their offense, Egnew wasn't needed as a blocker.
At Georgia, Lynch was required to. I watched a few Georgia games and Lynch also has some good hands.
I say we toss Egnew out on his ear and give the roster spot to Lynch.

You just proved it yesterday homes when you used 2watt to post. Lol. You are a fraud homie. Give it up.

Home doesn't need mark in toronto whoops I mean dbo harping on him and accusing me of impersonating someone else. maybe you should take a page out of your own book!!

Everybody go back to the posts between 2-3 pm yesterday there is your proof. Homes messed up. He is a fraud.

Tim, I agree, it's time for Egnew to go.

Lynch, to me, is a very similar TE to Sims. Both are good blockers with good hands. Neither will outrun an LB, but if they're open in the flat they'll get pick you up some yards.

Clay is our catching TE/H-Back who can lead a block every now and then, but is better suited running up the field and letting Sims or Lynch stay inside.

Egnew isn't going to come back and haunt us, even if he joins the Patsys or the Jests. Now that Hickey is GM and doesn't have any ties to Egnew I think we'll see him walk out the door by the time training camp is over.

go ahead and check mark in toronto I mean dbo and let me know if you find any evidence LOL!

Go ahead, home will be here waiting

Lol. So you think me and MIT are the same. Lol. What do you think about that Mark?

HAHA. Let's be serious fellas.

This team is an average to below average team with an average to below average QB.

Just look objectively and think "What did this team add that is going to make them improve 2 fold?"

Even if they make the playoffs they would have been beaten soundly.

You all seem to forget that yes, many games were close, but they were far closer to losing a few that they won than winning the one's they lost convincingly.

In short, they aren't making the playoffs and any person with credibility already knows all of this.

Tim @ 10:40

Do we need pass catchers or blockers?

Egnew is the all time Big-12 best TE. Lynch is a nobody. If we need an extra blocker then one of these career backups can come in for a play and line up at the TE position:
If our carrer backups have something better to do than get on the field then one of these future career backups can come in:
Billy Injun

I think Mark wants to expose Home for something he is not and has this evidence or whatever he calls it that accuses me of being someone else.

Nice try Mark! No impersonating evidence for you!

homes it ain't mark, I'm exposing you ya fool. Lol.hows the llama this morning?

Mark and Craig m have a personal hatred towards me

Just because your mock drafts are garbage and the players you like are garbage and I know all the top draft stars like Manziel and Bortles doesn't mean you have to keep hating. Childish tools LOL

We need to bring crowder back. Guy can tackle on the field and on the mic

Posted by: ExposingTheFraud | May 21, 2014 at 10:51 AM

You have a good point.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out with Lazor as OC.
Lazor is without a doubt a HUGE upgrade over Sherman.

Mark I mean dbo whines because Tannehill is our QB not because our draft is bad

Bitter mark bitter at the go go Tannehill bark

Home, I've never taken on another personality in my time here.

You can't say the same, especially for the time Mando barred you.

My opinion of you being a complete moron is obviously shared here my many.

How come I've never seen you here before dbo. You always see home in his true state all harped up.

Exposing the pathetic Tannehill
