Expanded playoffs would have been good for Philbin

NFL owners today tabled the idea of playoff expansion for 2014 and will take up the matter again at their next meeting in October, according to multiple media reports out of Atlanta where the owners are meeting.

It's not the best news for Joe Philbin.

Well, anyone with any sense of where the Dolphins are as a franchise understands Philbin, entering his third season with the team, is coaching for his job in 2014.

Owner Stephen Ross has been loyal to his coach in siding with Philbin versus former general manager Jeff Ireland after their rift last season. The owner told candidates during his search for a new GM that they had to accept Philbin and even turned away from candidates he liked because they wanted the ability to move on from Philbin.

And Ross made sure new GM Dennis Hickey understood he must work hand-in-hand with Philbin, who now seems to be more empowered than ever, in order to be considered a success with the Dolphins.

But here's the catch: Ross, despite his unfettered public confidence in Philbin and optimism about the coming season, also has confided to multiple people that if 2014 does not unfold quite the way he hopes, it may be time for a reset.

And a reset would involve getting a new head coach.

It remains unclear exactly what parameters Ross would have for needing or resisting change.

If the Dolphins make the playoffs, it is as near a certainty as one can have that Philbin would continue as coach. On the other hand, If the Dolphins' record takes a step back from a year ago and the team fails to the make the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year, the likelihood of a Ross reset would be very high.

That much seems clear.

But what about the gray areas of what might happen in 2014?

Would a winning record alone that does not include a playoff appearance appease the owner? Would another 8-8 record but another year out of the playoffs be acceptable?

Bottom line is if the Dolphins make the playoffs, no matter what their record or results in the postseason, Philbin can be confident of coming back for 2015.

And that is why an expanded playoff field that includes 14 instead of 12 teams would have been in the coach's interest. With an expanded field, the Dolphins might have overcome the hurdles they haven't been able to overcome since 2008.

But with the traditional 12-team postseason (six teams per conference) now the league plan, the Dolphins will have to overcome not only division rivals New England, Buffalo and New York for a postseason berth, but also recent playoff contenders Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore, San Diego, Denver, Indianapolis and Cincinnati.

The Dolphins finished third in the AFC East in 2013.

Mark is dbo yet accuses me of using multiple names LOL!

Sorry 2 watt, this jerk thinks I'm you

is a clueless

How the OL plays will dictate a lot. Coach Joe could lose his job if the OL does not gel quickly. Ross is on a mission to get a good product on the field and I'm not sure Miami even has the QB to do that.

the stupid
r wrong 'bout

lol. That's not true homes. Mark loves you.

Promichael must be me too mark because he also thinks our QB is a 6th rated QB at best. Not better than Gatorade boy Thad Lewis LOL!

Regular @ 10:06. I think it was improved alone by Albert's signing. That signing was extremely important. If you have a very good left tackle, that solves a lot of problems. I also think james will eb an adequate right tackle. Was he the best use of a first pick? Not in my opinion - I think first picks are sacred and your opportunity to select cornerstones and game changers. James at best will be neither.

The question marks come at the two guard slots. But if you are going to have question marks, it shoudl be there. i will pray for them to be good because I don;t want to hear this team next year try to sell me on a run of the mill guard as the first round pick jsut because it's the team's biggest need. Sick of that shyte already. Two of the last four first round picks spent on a C and RT ... goodness gracious.

Thad Lewis and Manziel will win playoff games this year while Tannehill watches on the couch

Home 4 GM

Tim @ 10:56

Regarding Sherman: I have been as frustrated as everybody else, but Sherman won a SB calling plays in GB.

Perhaps Sherman calls the plays that he did because he is so familiar with what Tanne can/can't do.

Or perhaps he forget the plays because he is getting old.

We'll find out one way or another.

Also remember that Philbin named Garrard the starter and then when Garrard gave it back then Philbin tried to make Moore the starter.

I like Tanne just fine but it is possible that he has a learning disability. Tannehill wasn't the first choice to be QB, he was the only QB that couldn't say no to the Phins.

Mark, our OL picks since (and including) Jake Long have been great picks. Granted Jake Long was injury prone and Pouncey can be dumber than a rock, but both players are/were top players at their position.

If there is one position our scouts know how to pick well it's our OL and DL.

If we would have taken a skill position player in the 1st round I would be a lot more worried that our pick was just wasted. I feel confident our RT will be holding fort just fine for the next 5 years.

Lynch will play in this league. He's a natural replacement for Fasano which when you think about it was an element greatly missing last year. Good blocker, tough dude, and will be a nice outlet in short yardage and in the red zone. Those guys are not glamourous but useful. I do think he's very similar to Dion Sims too. Will help improve what was already a very good red zone offense to have two of those guys.

Basically Homes with all the name changing you, YG and oscar do I find it hard to take anything you guys say seriously. You're just here to disrupt conversation, admit it and get on with your life.

I think Sherman's problem in Miami was not understanding the talent of the individual players.
He would call a play and expect "Green Bay" results without having "Green Bay" talent.

I like your Fasano - Lynch comparison.
Honestly didn't think about it that way until your post.

Md20, no doubt Pouncey is a very good center but when the rest of the league uses an average of a 4th round pick to fill the positiona nd we set a new record for how high a center is drafted and he isn't revolutionizing the position, you can't really congratulate yourself. Especially when you sacrifice improving your skill positions to the point where they are not very good and scare nobody and have to spend $60M to attract a borderline #1 WR. And that doesn;t even factor in the next two picks in that draft were Nate Solder who is an elite left tackle and Ryan Kerrigan, a top pass rusher who play two positions of much higher value in the league.

That's like using a stick of dynamite to kill a mosquito.

yeah, it will get the job done but will leave collateral damage in it's wake.

And I will disagree with our o line picks being great.

Long was a great o lineman .. but at what cost? That's been discussed here many times and doesn't need to be re-hashed again.

Threw away a 2nd on martin, third on Thomas, Third on Turner, First on Pouncey, signed an expensive first in Albert, first overall on Long, and that's nto including the burnt money on Grove and Smiley.

We have the single greatest investment in the o line across the NFL and if we are lucky, they will be average this year.

I wouldn't be patting myself on the back about anything the Dolphins have done across the o line. Pouncey included.

Juwan James may be the hands down best RT we have on the roster but that doesn't mean that he's a pro bowler or even average, it means that he'll be starting for us because we have no one else willing to take the job.

The OL gets worse from there not better.

This OL is worse than the one that started the 2013 season.

Tannehill still going to pass 34 td this season. cant wait.

ETF, and it doesn't mean that he won't be a pro bowler

Satele should still be our center, but I'm not going to rehash anything along those lines either. No need to give up on the guy like they did back then and now he's holding fort for the Colts.

Our OL has been a problem for a decade. At this point we can't plug holes with minor guys. Unfortunately we need to go/spend big. There has to be a reason why 2 OL coaches (Sparano and Philbin) can't fix an OL that other teams are able to fix in 1-2 seasons.

Problem is we get more out of the players we draft on the 3rd day in the draft than the 1st two days of the draft (going back to Jake Long in 2008 - notable players we drafted):

2008: none left on our team
2009: Davis (1) Smith (2) Hartline (4) Clemons (5)
2010: Odrick (1) Misi (2) Jerry (3) Carroll (5) Jones (5)
2011: Pouncey (1) Thomas (2) Clay (6) Wilson (7)
2012: Tannehill (1) Martin (2) Vernon (3) Egnew (3) Miller (4) Matthews (7)
2013: Are they still trying to find the place? They're lost.

"This OL is worse than the one that started the 2013 season"

ha ha are you serious!?!?

you must be on shrooms. that's 25 sacks less at least right there.

Posted by: Mark in Toronto | May 21, 2014 at 11:18 AM

"That's like using a stick of dynamite to kill a mosquito"

LOL and really who on this board couldn't have selected a first round lineman?

And oh yeah, I forgot about the 3rd we spent on John Jerry too... add that to the bill.

In all fairness, he should've been a monster RT for us. Guy was super big and had great feet for his size but decided he liked food more than football and ballooned from his draft weight at 328 to 360 or more...

the waste of that pick is on him personally more than the team itself. This guy has been stupid for a long time. if he had any discipline at all, he would've been signing a 5 year 30 M contract last offseason instead of the 1 year $1M contract...

Homey the Tool predicting Manziel will win a playoff game. The Tool will then come back here next year telling us he predicted Manziel will be a bust, just like he did with Grimes. Just like he did with his hero Brady Quinn. Manziel won't even sniff the field this year. Stephen Morris will play in a game before that fake Manziel. Check into a psychiatric ward Homey

I don't think the line is worse than last year's. That exageration. Albert alone makes the line better. he can go one on one against any team's best pass rusher - for two years or so at least. That frees up the coaches to use doubles elsewhere - and they will need to do that this year.

Albert will make the left guard position better, pouncey will make the right guard position better, and james at T will be adequate enough

Home=bob lee swagger

Just last wk home stated his father was a sniper in military

Anyone see movie "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg aka Bob Lee Swagger..coincidence?? Hmm..

Garn79 naw, Home are these 3 posers alone. Jay, 2 watt, and Zonk

MD20, the 2nd round picks during the last 6 years would've been better used as trade chips to move up or trade for established starters.

the best 2nd pick in the last 6 years was Sean Smith.

Cocoa, indeed picking a lineman in round one is child's play. At least the top half of round one where we drafted our successful linemen. But the best teams in the league are developing mid and late round picks for the most part to fill out their line.

the blueprint is out there. have max 2-3 guys drafted in the first two rounds then coach up the others.

Investing in a top o line coach is worth it's weight in gold. Another flub on Philbin stick with idiot Turner for that long.

Under Sparano, we could at least run. Under Turner, I was afraid to take an offensive play.

oh and ape tamer

dbo @ 11:33 & 11:35

You are correct: James may indeed turn out to be a pro bowler, eventually.

But tell me how this OL is better than the one we started last season with. Albert is better and Pouncey is the same but none of these guys are as good as Incogs or Jerry. If Billy and James are the starters then that is 2 rookies and rookie OL get tricked and abused by defenders.

Any way you slice it we're phucced:
If Turner and James start = 2 rookie OL
If Garner and Dallas start = last year's backups
If Smith & Fox start = Tanne will be in a bodycast by the end of September.

Tannehill will be given the chance to start but Philbin knows he has to make the playoffs. So if T-hill looks like he did against Buffalo and New York in the final two games he will be cheering instead of playing. The Guard positions will be huge. Miami could not screen last season and the Bills beat Miami on the screen passes. So Philbin and Hickey are going to have their selections in question if Miami can not screen again due to fat, slow guards that can not get out in front of the play. Parcells and Ireland were experts at reruiting fat slow Offensive Linemen without enough agility

In hindsight, yes, our 2nd round picks would have been better used as trade bait. But, in general, your 2nd round pick should net you a starter every year. We haven't received a legitimate starter from the 2nd round since Chris Chambers in 2001.

both turner and james are upgrades over martin. Don't forget about sam Brenner he can fill a guard spot and filled in pretty good last season

DBO uh huh!!
Notice how he acknowledged BLS earlier..Home does this a lot with himself! And he has many more aliases than 4.

Movie shooter was about a sniper who could hit a can of beans from like mile away or something..Home last wk said his daddy was a sniper in military..no coincidence here..just ducks..

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks..you get the idea..

No one knows if this OL is better than last year for sure. Obviously there are a lot of what-ifs (Shelly Smith and Turner to be specific), but, by default, this OL is better than last year's OL. How could you be any worse?

Garn79 must be upset about some in depth Insite I left on this blog. Can't handle someone who has a more accurate opinion than you do?

Who says Turner and James are better than Martin?
Turner played at North Dakota A&M what competition did he play against? Martin was good RT and may have been a good LT had he not melted down. When martin got moved to LT it was a promotion over RT not a demotion.
John Jerry started 46 games in 3 seasons and now starts for the recently-super bowl winning 2 times- NYG.

We should set up a CLUE scenario to figure out all that Homes poses by lol

Mark, Philbin dug his own grave with the staff he hired when he came here. The very first rule of being a good manager is you're only as good as you're help is. I don't think Philbin has learned it yet. Had to be forced to make some changes.

Feel pretty good about the new O-line coach and O-coordinator. Still have a no nothing QB coach and idiot D-coordinator.

I want the OL to better I just don't believe that it is.

I also think our DBs are worse.

Remember how we lost last year? Teams would throw deep early and often and put us in a hole and force us to abandon the run game. Then they just tee'd off on Tanne.
Why will that change?

ETF, your just being a negative sally. lets see how it plays out first. I'm not saying this is going to be an All American line, but it sure will be better than 58 sacks I guarantee.

The team seems more solid after the draft and free agency than before. This means that the dolphins must finish at least 9-7, regardless of the schedule. Of course a two digit winning record would be great. The must important thing is that it shows a clear improvement as concerns the OL and QB-WR connection. Defensively D.Jordan must show up, and the tackling must be more efficient. A reduction of 3rd and ten down conversions from the opponent is a must too. So if all this things improve 20% in average, it will translate maybe in two more wins compared to 2013.
This forthcoming season maybe the final test for some players like T-hill, Wallace, Jordan and some others that were supposed to be a game-changer players.
In 4 months we'll start seeing the answers to all our questions.

I know QBs couldn't throw TDs against our CBs last year. And it's not like we lost any CBs. Dimitri Patterson was AWOL all season. He contributed at the beginning, but the majority of the season he was out.

Wilson was serviceable and so was Carroll. They were marginal talent. Our DBs may end up being worse this year based on their talent level, but they're unknowns at this point.

Yes, there were some long plays that were given up but for the most part we weren't giving up too many yards or points. Our defense wasn't the problem with the team (LB was in general with blitzing, run pickup, and covering TEs....all around horrible). Our OL (and lack of running game) was.

To all the Philbin haters out there, Jeff Fisher's results in St. Louis are no better than Philbin's.

It's a crap shoot on the coaching front just like the players & GM's.

You keep mixing the pot and hope you find the right chemistry that makes up a championship team.

...we are overdue!

I haven't done a whole lotta research but a quick glance makes me think the Bills have the best defense in the division.

NHFinsFan, I remember when people were complaining about that last year and the year prior. Notice how everyone is still against Philbin but no one is still "wishing" we had Fisher?

Funny how the main point of people's arguments and debates back then was "no, fisher would have brought us to the championsip" yet fail to realize he hasn't done squat in St Louis (with 18000 1st round picks) or in Tennesssee if you take his overall resume there.

Case in point, as evident with ANY and EVERY coach in the NFL: it all comes down to the QB.

Fans wanted Coughlin out until Eli stepped up
Fans wanted McCarthy out until Rodgers stepped up
Fans wanted Caldwell out the 1st year Manning was gone from Indy
Fans wanted Cubiack out of Houston. Schaub came around and he was heralded as a great coach and how stability wins. Then Schaub stunk and Cubiack was fired.

MiamiD...we'll know soon enough.

Tannehill has one year to prove it was a flawed system installed by Sherman and not his lack of talent.

Good coaches tweak their scheme to match the attributes of the QB. It seems to me that Sherman had a system locked in and it was not aligned with Tannehill's strengths.

We will all watch together to see if the Lazor/Tannehill duo light it up, or stink it up.

I'm not being a negative sally.
I've been a fan of this team for years and it has turnd into 1 bullsht story after another.
James was at best the 6th best T.
Turner was at best the 12th best OL.
Landry was at best the 12th best WR.

If James is handsdown better than our other OL then we are in serious trouble because that would mean the other guys on the roster are not even as good as the 6th best college T. None of them have been starters in the NFL.

got Sherman axed

Was that REALLY you earlier? Ypu want Philbin gone? Weren't you the one who previously on here were in favour of giving Philbin FIVE years? And now?....ADIOS!

Don't worry Kris, if things go the way I think they will I expect Jeff Fisher to be out of a job soon and available for hire....Lol.

...or may be Sherman got himself axed with is overbearing attitude?

cocoa @ 12;02.. I agree 100%.

O and D co-ordinators have as much impact or more on game day than coaches. You would thiink if you were given a head coaching job, you would align yourself up with the best - especially in an area that isn't your forte.

As bad as things were before, at least Wannstedt got Norv Turner, Saban got Scott Linehan, and Sparano got Nolan.

Philbin got a bunch a clowns... bottom rung in all areas.

Only now as you say with his job on the line and a gun to his head he gets benton and Lazor who at least bring credibility and success to their areas.

Still waiting for Coyle to do the honorable thing and demote himself to DB coach where he is more suited.

I had to laugh at the guy earlier who called the Heat 'older than the Steelers D'. Seems to me they dismantled Brooklyn pretty easily and handled the Pacers pretty well on the road last night. Wish our Dolphins played as OLD as that.

Is Coyle the interim HC yet?

hey now Jethater, lay off the booze and huer slandering, will ya???

Marchool, Jordan has nothing to prove. he did it last year. Guy forces a pick six, a game clincing INT, beats Joe Thomas one on one and goes stride for stride down teh field with Rob Gronkowski among other plays and somehow this coaching staff thinks it has a better shot at winning with Phillip Wheeler on the field...
