Louis Delmas feels "great," which is good

Talent has never been a question with Louis Delmas. Playmaking ability has never been a question with Louis Delmas. Durability?

That's been a question for the Dolphins new starting safety.

Delmas played 16 games only once in his five-year career with Detroit. And even after that 2013 season, the Lions decided to cut Delmas.

So how's Delmas's health now.

"I’m great. I’m great," he said recently after a Dolphins OTA practice. "I haven’t missed a day of training, haven’t missed a day of practice. I’m feeling good right now, the best I’ve felt my last four years of football. So I’m very excited about this year."

Re-read that please. Delmas, ready to start his sixth NFL season, is feeling the best he's felt since his rookie year in the NFL.

That's good news for he Dolphins because they desperately would like Delmas to stay healthy in the coming season because healthy mean available and when Delmas is available, he generally makes plays.

Last year Delmas had three interceptions. Plays.

He had two sacks. Plays.

He's averaged nearly one fumble recovery per season. Plays.

He returned one of those fumbles and an interception for a touchdown as a rookie. Plays.

The Dolphins defense wants more playmakers and Delmas offers that possibility.

But he cannot do any of that if the durability issues haunts. Delmas is doing what he can to make sure it does not.

“Rest," Delmas said. "That’s something my first couple of years I didn’t take pride in is resting. After the season, I always started immediately with workouts. I think, as the years started going on, I started earning more miles on these legs, I needed to rest a little more. The coaching staff and the trainers are doing a great job of managing me. I’m comfortable right now."

It must be said one of the flaws Delmas has is also one of his strengths.

The man plays at ludicrous speed (Spaceballs reference) all the time. That's great for a Miami defense that is looking to attack more and set the tempo on the field.

But that approach has sometimes in the past led Delmas to give up big plays in the back end when he over-reacts.

And this:

Delmas gained a reputation in Detroit as a vicious hitter who gave no quarter. When he hits, he delivers the blow with everything he's got. But his full speed approach sometimes got him hurt. And his full speed approach at times got teammates hurt as well in situation where an offensive player duck beneath his hit and Delmas ends up hitting one of his own.

Perhaps Delmas can tame that aspect of his game some. Being home in South Florida might help in that regard. Enjoying his environment perhaps can be the settling influence Delmas might need.

"It’s a fun environment," Delmas said. "I plan on taking advantage of every opportunity that I step foot on the field."

High price lt and 1st round rt were 2 good moves, unfortunaly it goes downhill fast from here on - Hickey' summary

I actually like Jordan Tripp. will take him most of this eyar to get acclimated but he will be a player. Not sure he's the inside LB we need but he will play. The only pick I labeled an A in this draft.

3rd round talent got in the 5th rd. History says the Dolphins do well with these type picks as Clay, Clemons, and Jones were all 3rd rd or so talents that were drafted later.

Tripp will be the next one.

You don't want a girl MarK!

What does the QB and WR have to do with how well Delmas did on DEFENSE?! That's a pretty silly statement. If you said a Pro Bowl LB and CB it might have made a LITTLE sense

If Delmas stays healthy he's an upgrade from Clemmons, I didn't dislike Clemmons, but, he wasn't a playmaker. He didn't strike fear in anyone.

Congrats MIT

Marc, why not? Daddy's little girl!!!

I thought Clemons was a perfect foil for Jones. Needed someone to tend the shop while you freelance with Jones. Maybe the fact that the safeties didn't make enough plays last year reflects on Jones more than Clemons. Surely wasn't a problem the year before.

Our draft was horrible again

But, since you want a girl so bad MarK, I changed my profile pic with my kiddo to make you jealous ;)

Jones was certainly not spectacular at all last year. I'm not sure what changed in the past 2 seasons.

Clemmons was in the right spot most of the time, but, he rarely dropped the hammer and rarely got his hands on the ball

It seems that almost all the picks/FA's they've targeted the past 2 seasons are players that may not be as sound fundamentally, but, can turn a game around

So maybe hickey fixed the line, maybe not Phase I is underway

Phase I of rebuilding process about to be tested: The OL

Mission playoff ETA: 2017

Mission SB: 2022

Please keep in mind that these are only estimates of the project. No guarantees

Armando,

Players Union wants to change the checks the players receive from 17 "Game Checks" to Two 26 weeks checks.
Well if this passes 90 percent of the knuckleheads players in the league would be broke after the first month.

MarK I have girls and a boy. The girls come in home to visit forever. The girls are more worry in there teens. Anyway CONGRATS.

Delmas stays healthy and I think he is an upgrade over Clemons. I think with last yrs draft class getting to play we will have a better D this yr. It will help if we can finally run the ball.

Ha, interests, your mom!

She's beautiful Marc! Women have that nurturing aspect while boys act like meatheads most of the time. You will have a lot of time shared with your daughter forever... boys... as soon as they are old enough to use their prikk, later!!!

Marc,
On a team with a franchise QB + megatron + delmas the result was 7-9.

Tanne < Stafford
Wallace < megatron
2014 < 2013

Dolphins could of resigned Carroll,Clemmons and Patterson for what they are paying the washed up Courtland Finnegan. BIG mistake.

Thanks Bill, go go..

Pretty much comes down to that. if we aren't at least average in running the ball and stopping the run... ntohing else will matter...

Not me. I won't get excited even if we are undefeated after the bye. I know these Dolphins.

EXACTLY!

WithTannehill at qb we could start the season 8-0 and still finish 8-8. :(

Its like I was saying yesterday we need to own the line of scrimmage on both O and D. If we don't it will be another 8-8 yr and then this whole team will get torn down again and rebuilt.....that's another 3-5 yr plan!!

Thanks, but, that's a problem!

Dreading teenage years

You've heard the old saying. "If you have a boy you only have to worry about one rooster; with a girl, you have to worry about ALL OF THEM"

It's def different. You wouldn't let anyone that's not a saint watch your girl, with a boy, it's like, eh. Just drop him off at Chuck E Cheese and come back in an hour, HAHA

As long as Ryan Tanne-coaster is qb, we'll have to start the season 10-0 to guarantee a playoff spot. :)

OOps
Congrats on the baby girl, Mark

Sincerely
Home

Totally agree on your running game assessment Mark.

Darkoak gave birth to famed folk singer (and animated snowman) Burl Ives twin daughters on August 14, 1975.

I gotta go now retirement keeps me busy.....54 yrs old can still have a lot of fun and get fatter than I am!!

SHUT UP & PLAY!!! No braggin, no B/S & figure out a way to SHOW UP & BEAT OUR DIVISION for a change!!! Then SWEEP the AFC West too!!!

delmas has never been good

Not sure if Ross will ever have a winning season. He is a bumbling baffoon.

delmas has never been good

Bullcrap. If Delmas could've stayed healthy and had decent CBs and LBs on his teams in Detroit he is very good to pro bowl caliber talent.

126 mill for kaep, that is hilarious. good bye san frans future cap

u said if he stayed healthy. so ur just guessing. hes never been good while playing. mediocre player

dusty is an idiot, knows nothing about anything,

:keven c" lol love the name

Delmas knows how to hit with authority, Clemmons couldn't hit his way out if a wet paper bag. Already this is an upgrade. Also Clemmons toll horrible angles to the ball often, he played way back because he was a liability when brought up.

Delmas. Love the fire that guy has and the way he plays. He talks the talk and walks the walk. No need to let the guy play too much. Let the rookies learn.

Clemmons just didn't make a lot of big plays. He was just ok.

I agree a good backup but not a game changing starter.

This season is pretty hopeless but we are rebuilding for the future.

Congrats to MIT!

I have three girls, ages 6, 3, & 7 months. I call them the Tea Kettle Brigade. When they whine, they sound like tea kettles.

Kaepernick is a franchise QB

K.Moreno is a 3rd down back.

I am the original and have someone impersonating me...Where are the blog Police? 5:35 pm was not me.

Miller is a 5th down back. Never seen a RB go down as easy as him,

This season is pretty hopeless but we are rebuilding for the future.

This was not me either...I am a fan. where is the moderator? Who do I need to email or let know?

Marc

nice pic

However u might need Home's GF to come over and redo that little girls hairdo

lol

Seriously
U can tell dad "fixed" her hair

Prolly pissed after u got the bill from Shula's rip off steak house

"Tuesday did not start swimmingly for Johnny Manziel.

Taking snaps with Cleveland's first and second team during organized team activities, the rookie quarterback threw a trio of interceptions to Browns defenders.

After flinging the ball to undrafted safety Robert Nelson in positional drills, Manziel tossed a second pick during a full-squad heave that landed in the arms of veteran Donte Whitner, who took it to the house. Lightning struck again when Johnny Football misfired on a sideline route that cornerback Joe Haden pulled out of the sky for another pick six, per The Plain Dealer."

LOL have any comments homey bahahaha! Tpuke still blows

I've been waiting homey

Email Armando directly with his email link, it's common for the trolls on here to impersonate people, let him know, the Herald staff won't act unless they are made aware of it.

Then set up a Typepad account so that people will know it's you when you post.

Delmas is Louis Oliver-punisher. Clemons was steady but vanilla. Need Rashad Jones to start roaming again as he looked bad last year.

would have rolled the dice on Pattersons health over Finnegan singing and let one of last years rookies step up.

Patterson played well when he played, he just couldn't be relied on to stay healthy enough to be a starter on the outside.

this blog has become a fukin joke. I hardly ever go to miamiherald.com because this blog is just garbage. i don't understand what people are writing about. there were like 10 comments about the browns. grow up people.

Ryan "T-Sizzle" Tannehill will sign a $100M extension after next season.

what Brown comments?

lol

Johnny Manziel took first-team reps Wednesday in 11-on-11 drills. Hold your horses. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said this was planned, mainly to help keep Brian Hoyer, who is recovering from ACL surgery, away from any incidental contact. All the quarterbacks have been rotating to get different looks from the defense. In fact, Shanahan said he hasn’t even started assessing the quarterback competition, because this OTA period is just so new to fairly judge Manziel.
But boy, there were some throws today by Manziel that should have Browns fans giddy about the future of this team. In particular during a red-zone set, Manziel bootlegged hard towards the right sideline and found a streaking Jordan Cameron, all the way in the left side of the end zone. Of course there were some mistakes from Manziel. Coach Pettine would like to see him get in and out of the huddle with more speed. But each practice Manziel's playmaking ability starts to sparkle.

Should of drafted HaHa !!!! Jones sucked last year and Delmas is always hurt and was part of worst secondary's the last 5 years!!!! Been a fin fan forever but I am starting to truly loose hope !!!!! Not a huge fan of draft/free agents we got !!!! Like an ass I'll always be a dolphin fan , but this team is killing me!!!!!

L.Miller averages more after contact than K.Moreno and D.Thomas.

Either get better Seats or get a bigger T.V.

61 million guaranteed for KAEP

and u & Home will pay for it through insane ticket prices, ridiculously priced sports apparel like 250 dolar authentic jerseys, 14 dollar beers, 6 dollar waters, etc

It's our own fault for allowing it

Home & GF had enuf of being ripped off
after he went to a Panthers hockey game last month after they were already eliminated and bought (2) two cans of (domestic) beer

So we had four cans of beer for $40.00

Seriously
a can of freaking beer for 10 dollars bought from a kiosk in the hallway no less

IF u want to get ripped off
might as well go to Shula's

last time we went bought a little kid an ear of corn -$8.00 and (2) two glasses of water for $6.00 each

So the kids corn and water were $20.00 plus tax and tip
came to $25.00 for one ear of dry corn

Or make a better comparison. At least Moreno can block. Miller better than Thomas is like saying Henne was better than Cleo Lemon

Posted by: SAM I AM | June 04, 2014 at 06:09 PM

Remember this is the same Sham Scam advocating a trade up for Manziel.

For all those interested at Walmart entrance in south Florida they are selling awesome sweet bi colored corn on the cob, big fresh ears from local farms for .10 cents each

same price for 250 ears of corn at Shulas Steak house
of course that's w two glasses of water also

Don Shula is a Filthy Thief that could not put a running game or defense together for 17 yrs of Marion's career

Mosst overrrated coach in football and now ripping off the public again in his restaurant that smell just like Don Shula passing wind

If Miller was so good, no way they sign Moreno.

Miller is not fast enough to be a scat back, not tough enough to be a bruiser, not strong enough to be a blocker. He is a side kick at best.

^Marino's career

NoSho MorAnus showed up fat and lazy for Dolphin's OTA's

Bazooka Joe was pissed and sent over to play with the 2n string guys
