Folks getting tense, season must be drawing close

The Dolphins opened practice to the media for the last time today and afterward it felt like the regular-season is looming because things are suddenly getting a little tight around here.

Talk to Mike Pouncey after practice to ask about his trip to the doctor on Monday? Nope. A communications department person escorted him off the field.

FYI, Pouncey visited a hip specialist Monday and the report was good. He is making progress. He is not yet cleared to practice. He will definitely miss the opener against the New England Patriots. There is still a possibility he is placed on the physically unable to perform list to start the regular season -- meaning he would miss six games. The Dolphins can also put him on the active roster (even though he would not be playing) in hopes he misses fewer than six games.

I asked Joe Philbin for confirmation quarterback Ryan Tannehill is not playing in the final preseason game Thursday.

"We haven't finalized anything," Joe Philbin said.

Look, if Ryan Tannehill is playing even a series Thursday there should be an investigation. Why would anyone risk Tannehill getting a helmet to the knee in a meaningless fourth preseason game? And why wouldn't Philbin say so?

Anyway, I am told Matt Moore is the likely starter followed by Brady Quinn and then Seth Lobato.

Kicker Caleb Sturgis, who has been a disappointment this preseason because he's been hurt much of the time after being a disappointment as a fifth-round pick last year, returned to practice today and kicked a couple of times. Afterward, he spoke for approximately 24 seconds, giving condescending one-word and one-sentence answers.

Reporter: How did it feel today?

Sturgis: "Good."

Reporter: Where do you feel you're at right now?

Sturgis: "We'll see."

Reporter: Did you feel comfortable out there?

Sturgis: "Anytime I kick the ball I feel comfortable."

Reporter: If you were in a game situation could you kick?

Sturgis: "I'm just not going to asnwer that right now."

I'm glad the Dolphins have a cool, calm, collected kicker. The injury thing isn't in his head at all. Lots of confidence in his mindset.

RB Daniel Thomas (hamstring) who has not played all preseason is on track to play Thursday. He practiced today.

RB Mike Gilislee (hamstring) did not practice today. He is not on track to play Thursday.

TE Brett Brackett (knee) who missed practice Monday returned to practice today.

The Dolphins have 86 players on the roster. They will make nine cuts by 4 p.m. this afternoon. Check back for the roster details.

Interestingly, today comes at the end of a training camp and preseason when the Dolphins have been the most open they've been in years. They've reported injuries, which is not an NFL mandate in the preseason. They've kept practices open the past two weeks following the end of training camp.

Finally, despite the increasingly tense answers from players and coaches, a big thank you goes out to the Dolphins communications department for serving nice lunches to the media the past two weeks.

still need
a qb

Make no mistake.

THERE'S A QB CONTROVERSY IN MIAMI!!!!!

NO QB controversy at all, RT is the starter, period.

Trade Tannehill for a RB?

All 4 of those need to be cut.

But St. Louis is building something special in that defense for the next 5 years at least. Brockers, Long, Quinn, Donald, Laurenaitis, ogletree are the best front 7 in the NFL - YEAH, I SAID IT!

I not only agree but would add you forgot all about OLB Jo-Lonn Dunbar and Ray-Ray Armstrong (Who is a Back up OLB that I would start at SOLB on our D today) Maybe they do trade Moore given the Rams have a few LB's we could use now!

On the Backend Janoris Jenkins is one of the better young CB's you never hear about while LCB Trumaine Johnson (Out of Dunphy's beloved Montana) is a find!

The FS McLeod is SOLID and I LOVE the S.S. TJ McDonald who I wanted badly in 2013 draft! You might remember I reminded you he was Tim's kid who I felt one of the best S.S.'s of his day right up there with Lott (Who he replaced in S.F. after spending bulk of career lost in Az) and Atwater!

I think TJ one of the steals of 2013 draft in Rd-4! We took Sims whose O.K. but TJ (Like Dad an enforcer who dropped because of injury!) is a THUMPER at S.S. There is another McDonald son playing Safety this one at UCLA I'll keep my eye on!

This is WITHOUT QUESTION the best young Defense in the NFL! Talk all you wish about Fisher but he's built this group to give (And hand out) headaches in that Div!

Why are we still wasting time and money on D Thomas?

Fisher is a great coach.

D Thomas is a lost cause, who has never shown any consistency. Such a psft runner with very poor vision and inability to attack the hole. Let's move on and keep Williams as our third back. Goodbye to our 3.6 a pop soft powerback.

I've been following this and by all accounts he's been killing his Rehab assignments! So why on God's green Earth would you shelve him for 6 games if it's possible he can be back and practicing by early Mid-Sept.? This is the one player this Yr. we couldn't afford a set back with and the earlier he gets on the field the better we are at not only the line calls but tough up the gut were good Running teams are solid! If it's an open spot for Pouncey or a guy who won't dress anyway on game day then what's with even contemplating the issue?

Looks like matt moore on trading block

Fisher a great coach?

career stats:
wins = 156
losses = 137
W/L % = .532
Playoffs = 5/6 for .455%

for a 20 year run, those are average numbers folks and I'm glad he passes on the Miami job.

Thad Lewis just got cut, throw Brady out on the street and bring this kid in for a shot, he played well against us and finished with a 81 rating with a sorry Bills offense and coach.

I'm tired of seeing the Dolphins bring in UFA RB's to simply have a body to throw in (wear out) in Pre-Season but Damian Williams is the 1st in a long time I see as a legit player with upside to stick on O and ST's!

D.Thomas needs to get it in gear! Team will keep 4 and right now on Thursday he's fighting Darkwa for the 4th spot given IMO Williams (Both Damian's are locks!)

I believe Thomas beats out Darkwa who seems PS Material to me but he has to get on the field! I know alot hate this player but he has value in screen game were he's made some plays for the team like juking Revis out of his shoes causing injury 2012.

Sturgis must have been reading Mando's blog lately and not liked what was written about him. Maybe it will light a fire in his belly and he will...hmmmm, what does kicker with a fire in his belly do differently then one without it? Probably not much.

I have a feeling Daniel Thomas is a goner after Thursday's game.

The type of QB the Jets are using in this evolution of O under Morningweg. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up in N.Y. with Phil Simms kid hitting the St. (Doesn't have to go far to get to Dad's place)

I am righting a wrong tonight.

I am buying Madden 15 and I am gonna trade for Tre Mason!!

Robert Quinn is a special talent.
He can take over a game with his pass rushing prowess.
And he's just 24.
Believe it or not, Howie's kid is 30 years old already so the 5 year plan better come quick.
Now for the Rams' offense?
Jeff Fisher...career record....156-137-1, pctg: .532
Better get on the phone with Washington to see if Cousins is available.

Fins4life,

Sorry but we have drafted some awful runners too recently, like Booker, Thomas and maybe Gillislee. Thomas isn't good enough after 3 years here. Watch him on 3rd and short trying to get a yard he just can't to it. Ok he made the play against Revis, but then a broken clock is right twice a day.

Rdubs, haha.

I see the Pats traded Mankins. They're a little worse now than this morning.

Rdubs, im cutting matt moore tonight

Pats traded Mankins to Tampa Bay who had Incognito in. Maybe Incognito now goes to Pats so he can badger more of his former teammates?

No way Belichick add a cancer like Cogs to his locker room... guys been to 6 Superbowls for a reason.

With 39% and most votes 1664 votes on the sunsentinel voted The Dolohins to be 10-6. That is another fact.

Wheres LOL?

Posted by: Marco | August 26, 2014 at 01:59 PM

Make no mistake my friend I'm not advocating this player on any short yardage package. The facts are however with exception of last Yr. Moreno is always hurt for a few games a yr. Thomas can be a serviceable back up as a 3rd down pass catching RB or checkdown player who actually can block in pass game. The idea is best 53 and he fits better than Darkwa who seems PS Material to me!

Looks like all the Pats got was Tim Wright and a 4th for Mankins. I like our chances more in week 1

Joke, NHFinsFan, just a joke.
Can't think of any reason why anyone would even try him out. For a minute I was on Cogs' side because 300+lb men need to settle their own differences;forget the bullying. The incident with the girl on the golf course did it for me.

fin4,

D Thomas isn't really a blocking back in the passing game, he seems to whiff most of his assignments. Serviceable is maybe the kindest way of stating he isn't good enough. D Williams has shown to be a decent young prospect with far more upside and value than Thomas has. We can't keep sticking with these subpar players anymore if we want to be successful. D Thomas doesn't really fit with the Lazorball approach either, he is too slow and can't even run between the tackles at 230.

facts,

Maybe the Rams will take D.Thomas for Mason in Madden.Last year I couldn't get Lesean from Philly. No matter how hard I tried

Rdubs, simple take off cpu trade agreements

Great news the bucs ship Logan mankins out. older guy but when the top dog ships out a borderline hall of fame guy and obviously the next guy up isn't as good, it's a good day.

IF BELICHICK TRADED MANKINS IT'S BECAUSE HE ALREADY

Has someone better.

The only team that makes personnel moves without a backup plan is this team.

Tanny-hill cannot handle it. Remember he only Q.B'd 18 games before being drafted. If he can't reach Wallace on deep routes one of the two need to go ( Wallace got 60 million). Moore will give us a better chance t score. Tanny is Henne reincarnated.

facts,

But that is kind of cheating....isnt it?

Moore being traded. He wasnt at practice today.

Rdubs, if it allowed in the options its not cheating. Also it is a video game.

What is it with Armando and Caleb Sturgis? He hates the kid..Calls him troll on Twitter and all

Julio, Chris is the elderstatesman and alpha dog of that Rams team. Someone has to serve that role and why not a member of one of the two royal families on the NFL (the Matthews of course being the other - sorry Pounceys, not there yet).

On offensive their line is talented as can be. yes a couple of guys are a hit away from being out but if healthy, that is an ultra talented line. Tre Mason will be a good back I think but we may have to wait a while to see that talent. Receivers are pedestrian but given everything else they have there is more than enough talent there to be an elite team ... just need to find a top 16 qb and as well all know all too well, those guys are not just walking the street. If I was Fischer, I mortgage large come April to get one of these top guys ... not like they have a lot of needs. The time is now for them to go for it. Five year window as I see it ... give or take.

Lol

marco, that other time the broken clock being right was that HUGE run in the 2nd half against Pitt last year.

I'm with f4l, he is a neglible cost - Darkwa goes on practice squad, Gillislee too probably and Thomas gets one last kick at the can. I think the Dolphins only save about $100k by cutting him ... he may get one last benefit of the doubt because guys his size and speed are not easily found on the street.

Why all the love for daniel thomas.Big strong guy that can NOT block, run with power, think well, stay healthy, guess he conned you guys with a few fairly decent games during his nfl stay here.I only hope that the coaches keep the best talent that we have and D.T.goes elswhere before he either guts tanne.killed with missed blocks,or losses games for us when he shows up healthy on occasion GO FINS

In what DECADE will the Phins win a home playoff game.?

Ooops sorry, they save $800k by cutting him. Game on?

NE trade Logan Mankins to Bucs.this one has me confused. With Brady getting older it would seem you would want to keep your 6 time Pro Bowler

SHOCKER OF THE DAY

Mike Garafolo ‏@MikeGarafolo 56s

Brady Quinn. RT @3rd_Goal: short lived but I enjoyed every second. Thank you @MiamiDolphins for the opportunity to play the game I love

got to say.. philbin and lazor want more tempo, hurry the pace... and their right! miami does look good, a LOT better then they've been for a long time BUT...i recently got the oppourtunity to watch one of seattle's preseason games and let me tell you, this team has set the bar. i can only guess but it seems evedint that maybe philbin or bill lazor recently got the SAME oppourtunity to watch last years superbowl champs during a preseason game prompting them to emphasize team speed. again, miami will be very good BUT..if miami wants more then a playoff birth, if they want to beat a team like seatle, they must get faster.

Please stop with the Matt Moore horseshlt or get off the blog. Enough is enough having morons ruin a discussion. Tannehill is the QB, if you don't like it, go root for another team.

Sturgis was asked if he is healthy enough to kick if it was game day and he refused the question.

Yet he said he felt good while kicking.

He can't give a straight answer which means he's hiding something.

Interesting...

Why not bring in Thad Lewis to compete with Matt Moore and Brady Quinn. Why not open up the competition to see who starts against the Pats.

Marino is looking under every acorn for an advantage when he takes his team against the Bill Belicheat.

I would like to think the Patsies got a bit weaker today however I recall the same feelings when
Brady started over Bledsoe or
Vrabel traded or
Seymour traded or
Milloy cut.....

It just seems no matter what they do they get better! I hate them!

D Thomas did have a 55 yard run, but thats it Mark. The guy has over 365 carries and has one run over 40 yards. Sorry he isn't the powerback we need him to be. Last year Thomas failed time and time again to get even a yard.

Thomas is also a liability on the pass block, sorry for me his time has run out, we don't need him on this team, make room for a young guy like D Williams that already has impressed me that he has more power, vision and burst through the hole than Thomas ever has. We may have to agree to disagree here.

So did Brady Quinn cash 2 paychecks before being released?

So who's the new OG for the Pats? Is it Marcus Cannon who played a very good RT during Vollmer's absence last year including neutralizing Cameron Wake twice?

Marco, not going to dispute anything you say at all but I think maybe they just keep him because you just enver know. Damien Williams obviously has earned a spot among the top 3 and even some of the kick return duties as it looks like Miami actually has had feelers on a trip for Thigpen who depite being a decent player just doesn't do enough to make this crowded roster.

Like the old baseball analogy, you send Darkwa and Gillislee down to AAA (practice squad) just because they have options and Thomas doesn't but this lets you keep them all.

Yes Mark it is Cannon

In what DECADE will the Phins win a home playoff game.?

Posted by: ugly logo | August 26, 2014 at 02:33 PM

THIS DECADE. yes sometime between now and 2020 they will win a home playoff game. Now will stop asking the same question over and over?
