The other bigtime TE who practiced full Monday

If you stay up to date on the news around the AFC East, you know that New England tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is recovering from surgery to repair an ACL injury last year, participated in 11 on 11 drills with the Patrioits for the first time since training camp opened.

That is great news for the Patriots as it suggests Gronkowski may be ready for the Sept. 7 opener against the Dolphins. That may not be great news for the Dolphins as it suggests Gronkowski may be ready for the Sept. 7 opener against the Patriots.

But in the shadows of the Gronkowski news on social media (you should be following me on twitter) is the fact the Dolphins also got an infusion of talent to their tight end corps Monday when Charles Clay returned to practice for the first time in weeks.

Clay, who had less invasive knee surgery in the offseason, had missed every practice and preseason game since the Aug. 4 scrimmage.

But on Monday he was back full -- working in all the drills, including 11 on 11.

"It’s a good feeling," Clay said of his return. "Any time you miss time, you kind of want to be out there working with your guys getting better. They’ve been doing a good job, working hard and they had a good win this past weekend. I’m just trying to come back and knock a little rust off and get things going.

“I was really antsy, just sitting at home the first week watching the game. You never want to be home watching, but, at the same time, any time you deal with something like that, you’ve got to work hard to get back. Like I said, I’m just happy to be back right now."

Clay's status for Saturday's dress rehearsal game versus Dallas at Sun Life is up in the air.

But he hasn't been worried the knee would be a detriment for the season.

"No, there wasn’t any point where I was worried. We have a good training staff, so just getting the chance to work with those guys. There was never any doubt in my mind. There wasn’t any point in time where I thought it was bad."

“You always want to get some kind of live reps. But at this time, like I said, the health is the most important thing. I’m not rushing anything. I’m just coming out here trying to get better.

“You always want to get some kind of live reps. But at this time, like I said, the health is the most important thing. I’m not rushing anything. I’m just coming out here trying to get better."

The Dolphins have a new offense. They've installed tons of information -- plays, formations, audibles -- since Clay was last on the field. He's not worried.

"They’re still installing things and stuff like that and having certain looks and making adjustments," Clay said. "Me not being able to practice the time I did, it’s only right that I get those mental reps and, if they happen in a game, I’ll be ready.

“I’m up to speed. I did a lot of studying during that time, watched a lot of film. I’m coming back and, like I said, I’m  just working on getting better every day.”

Love Clay....

Has some easy drops @ times....but you can tell he is a natura talent....even the year before last when he had most of his issues....

I feel about Clay the way Mark feels about Tanne....except without all the feelings....

:)

Time to go home....

Maybe I will catch up with some of the afternoon shannigans another time...

Salguero you should go write for the redskins. Maybe then you will be objective, or at least positive.

Look at his twitter feed. No shame. He even dropped a Redskins Trivia question.

Tell us again how an O-line is not important in Pro Football Kris.

How you don't need a line to have a successful offense.

I sat here on day 2 of free agency and was steaming. WHY? because numerous solid young vets were signing with other teams and word leaked that the Dolphins passed on Zane Beadles for example because Hickey thought it wasn't "VALUE". Instead he pointed at his temple to show how smart he was and signed Shelley Smith for peanuts and said.. "you'll see".

Dicey stuff when he makes those statements yet sees the value in a 30 Yr. Old CB who'd just got done collecting 24 Mil (Base and signing bonus) over 2 Yrs. from St. Louis off his 5 Yr/ 50 Mil deal. Finnegan playing for the H.C. who drafted him in fact played like a guy making 10 Mil in base pay collecting almost all his 28 Mil in guarantees.

Add the injuries he had while a Ram and depth we have at DB (Even if young and untested) and you really scratch your head at this decision passing on a perfect scheme fit in Beadles for the Zone. Beadles by the way only has 12.45 Mil in guarantees that Jax can void in 2016 at minimal CAP hit while Finnegan gets 11.5 from us over the same span at a difference of under 1 Mil over 2 Yrs!

You all should be following me on twitter.

In week-1 I expect to see the Dolphins in a Zone with Ellerbe underneath and Delmas over the top. The key here is the CB's in man with no deep support. I don't worry so much about Ellerbe in zone underneath it's were he made his name as basically another S.Safety on the field with the Ravens. He was a WILB with Ray or Jameel McClain plugging between the Tackles in that 3/4 D. He was suspect in every aspect last Yr. but think he plays better this Yr. as he's showed so far this Pre-Season at more natural cover Pos. as SOLB in the 4/3.

F4L,

You also forgot to add how Cheap the Eagles got N.Carroll for.

Finny-$5.5M

Moreno- $3.5M

That is $9M Hickey wasted where he could have signed 2 real good Guards.

The Moreno one I really don't get. No one was showing interest, and he was injured. He could have waited after the draft to sign the 3rd down back who had 1 average season on his Resume.

At least Finny was a somebody. Still overpaid. But at least you overpaid for someone who has produced at a high level.

Finnegan will be much better than Nolan Carrol if hes healthy, Im not worried about that signing..

I dont get why the team is still 10.5 mill under the cap with crap for guards. Coming off as a very frugal team maybe because Dawn wants to stay in good grace with Ross by saving him money while potentially being a winning team

-Dashi

Dashi my friend that is true, Flannagan did play a high level - in 2011.

No problem, we have Dion jordan to cover him ... oh wait, he's out ... we have Phillip Wheeler ... oh crap.

I suspect we may see some Jordan Tripp in this game. The kid has shown some pass cover skills.

Seriously Mando, nobody here cares about your stupid Redskins.

PLAYERS FISHER DUMPED TO MAKE THE RAMS BETTER

Brandon Gibson
Shelly Smith
Courthouse Flannagan

ALL 3 WERE BETTER THAN ANYONE ON OUR ROSTER

K. Moreno is an every down back dummy.

MIT,

Not a big fan of Bortles. I saw a bunch of UCF games. B.Bottles was a game manager while S.Johnson carried the team. Reminds me of watching an Alabama game.

Bridgewater has won at every level. And is good late in the game.

Mettenberg is more talented than Bortles. If it wasn't for the ACL injury and the drug charge he would have been the first QB taken. Metty grew up around big time football.

Regular, exactly. Team had a crap o line to start the offseason, then what little depth they had disappeared when they got rid of Martin, Clabo, Jerry, and Richie. Yet, they acted like all they needed was a starting left tackle, a vet backup OG for depth and they would be ready to roll.

Yet I hear people excusing Hickey and the fins because it was impossible to rebuild the line. uh, not it wasn't. They had $40M + in cap space and all their picks. Also sucks they let D'Qwell jackson go because $4M a year was too much.. I know he's not a star but at least he can play ILB.

Ted Bridgewater looked brutal the other night. Bortles looks like the real deal after 2 preseason games. WTF are you talking about dippy?

Dashi, that post last blog about the Dolphins waiting for oscar to die was funny.

Glad Clay is back. Now Tannehill can get in sync with his best receiver.

We will see Dashi.... I think Bortles will be a long time starter for the Jags. Just be steady and productive there. I mean he's showing the signs early.

Bridgewater has so far shown some very concerning traits. We will see what happens but Bridgewater needs a LOT of work. For his sake, I hope he has that high football IQ and the work ethic to match but he has come to camp totally unprepared. i wonder who is managing his career?

MIT,
Are you familiar with the play 'The Producers' by Mel Brooks?
The premise of the play is that a show that is a flop can be just as profitable for the owners as one that is a big hit.

Look at this team and tell me that Ross is not doing this shht on purpose. It's the only way this makes sense.
Before November elections the idea will be floated that the Dolphins are considering moving to LA and part of the deal will be a new stadium. That will force the legislature to approve a new stadium which Ross can depreciate against his real estate earnings - thereby making more money by putting 'a flop' on the field.

Totally forget about the D'Qwell Jackson non-signing as well as the Vontae Leach. We dont have a Shady McCoy RB so IDK how the h e l l these outside zone runs which are slow developing are going to work.

To tell you the truth Damian Williams looks more of a 1st string Rb than Lamar Miller, we've seen Williams shed some tackles in the preseason but we're all still waiting for Miller to break one

Team will always be under the cap by at least $10M until Tannehill signs his $100M extension.

We have a bunch of young guys playing under rookie deals. Wait til guys like Odrick, Pouncey, O.Vernon and Tannehill start coming up for extensions. Then you will be complaining we have no cap room.

Everything is related.

Look at the Bengals. They were always under the cap the last couple seasons. But that cap has shrunk when G.Atkins, AJ Green and Archie needed new contracts.

The Cap is not the problem.

And it is asinine to think Ross or any other owner does not want to spend any money to win. Specially when the NFL has a Cap floor.

Now if the Fins were almost at the Cap floor. For multiple seasons. Then you can say Ross does not want to spend.

Again, the reason our cap is so low is because almost half of our players are on their rookie contract.

Haha, ETF, maybe. I mean, moves that are obvious that any of us would do are being overlooked and they bring in back ups and try defensive ends at ILB. You think it's more like the Producers? reminds me of Major League.

"Can't be a home run, it's too high ... too high!"

haha, I love that movie.

Dashi, Can THill at least get the doggone team to the playoff before you anoint him the 100 million dollar man???

Last I remember he choked the last 2 games of the season with the playoff on the line. Not saying hes a busty but hes far from a 100 million dollar QB some of you think he is already.

We have plenty of DL talent... someone will walk and the Fins will draft his replacement.

Points allowed isn't an important statistic for a defense.

Brian Hartline isn't a good WR (back to back 1000 yard seasons).

K. Moreno is a third down back.

I could go on but these are just a few of the things dippy says that make you go huh?

Dashi, the cap will increase and if we wanted to gain another $4m in cap savings towards next year, I have an excellent idea and it wouldn't weaken our starting teams at all. Wouldn't impact the starting offense, defense, or special teams.

Let's talk about how L.Miller is the Best Pass blocking back on the roster. He has done a wonderful job this preseason picking up blitzes and blocking guys that the O-line missed.

On the play Tannehill threw deep to Wallace if it wasn't for L.Miller, THLL would have got crushed. D.Thomas looked like Jerry, he totally missed his guy off the snap. L.Miller stood up McCoy. All 300+lbs of him.

Look it up, second play or 3rd play of the game.

No problem, we have Dion jordan to cover him ... oh wait, he's out ... we have Phillip Wheeler ... oh crap.

I suspect we may see some Jordan Tripp in this game. The kid has shown some pass cover skills.

Last Yr. Wheeler ws the SOLB (Cover LB) with Misi as your WOLB(Edge enforcer pass rushing LB) We all (Including the Coaching Staff) Saw the disaster Wheeler was in coverage and how suspect Ellerbe was alone in the Middle with run support sideline to sideline while Misi a waste as a pass rusher really.

This Yr. while we hold our collective breath Misi can get it Inside (In team History Bryan Cox once made the move if not Tripp may indeed get tossed in the fire) The team seems to have gotten the OLB spot squared more adequately. Misi as the rush WOLB never panned while Wheeler couldn't cover anybody. This Yr. our best cover LB (At least while a raven) will get the call at SOLB with Wheeler using his speed off the edge at WOLB.

In Week-1 I expect Ellerbe to be in Zone coverage underneath with Delmas over the Top on Gronk. Something last Yr. we really couldn't do because it meant Clemmons had Gronk deep (Remember Clemmons week-4 2013 Vs. J.Graham? UGLY!) It puts the CB's one on one but I'll take those odds Vs. Edelman, Dobson and Thompkins.

yesterday the idea of trading Matt Moore for Alex boone was floated and most people here would have done it but was wondering why the 9ers would ever do it ... and they wouldn't.

But here's another idea, would you trade a backup Qb (even the best one in the league) for a 30 year old ILB who put up 141 tackles last year, 1.5 sacks, and one INT?

And be at the same cap position we are now?

Well the Dolphins could've made that trade. They didn't.

I keep thinking about 2013 O-line decisions. Martin deemed good enough to start at LT. Mix and match right side because you know...they're not all that important anyway.
I see a pattern and his name is Joe Philbin

Regular,

As long as you have idiots saying M.Moore should start.

I will keep hitting you with the truth. R.Tannehill will sign a $100+M extension in a couple seasons.

Statistically, R.Tannehill has had one of the top 10 starts to a career as an NFL QB.

After this season, R.Tannehill would have thrown for over 11,000yds and over 60TDs in his first three years.

Real short list on that one.

fin4life bro have you checked my WR depth chart yet? Looking good.

Many of our Players have very good points, along with serious ??s Finnegan, Delmas, Wheeler, Ellerbe, Jimmy Smith, Reshad, DJ. Without excellent Coaching they will be expected to perform to their good, and their significant bads.

Courthouse Flannagan now that is funny.

Big Baby,

Still butthurt over the other day(Your momma played LT for V.Lombardi). I love how some of you hold Dashi grudges for months and years.

You forgot to add that Dashi also said, Spo Sucks!!

And what I said, was Points Allowed is not the MOST important. You were going on about it is the most important statistic. When it does not even go into the equation for total defense.

I have already said, I will eat the Hartline Crow. I said that 2 years ago.

K.Moreno is the 3rd down back. He definitely is not the starter. And he is battling D.Thomas for the 3rd down job.

Manziel makes obscene gesture at Redskins' bench?

Gotta love this guy.

He is football's Happy Gilmore.

Question is how are our LB's (Wheeler, Misi, Ellerbe) going to vs. Gronkowski, compared to how Clay will do vs. NE's LB's (Collins, Mayo, Hightower)...

They aren't paying 3 mil a year for a 3rd down back. D. Thomas lol has averaged under 3 yards a carry for his career sounds like a valuable third down back to me! You momma couldn't play for a pee wee team hahahaha

And if you want a list of the 5 things Dashi has been wrong about the past 3 seasons. Wait til YG wakes up. He keeps it next to the poster of Dashi on the wall.

dashi is wrong about everything. This YG guy is probably a genius.

And if you want a list of the 5 things Dashi has been wrong about the past 3 seasons. Wait til YG wakes up. He keeps it next to the poster of Dashi on the wall.

You like eating crow, yes?

They pay $6M a year for a back up QB. About $6M for a #4 WR.

Yes, they are paying $3.5M a year for a 3rd down back.

Haha, Baby Dick!!

On the other side, all backup Olinemen have serious deficiencies to them, along with ALL the RBs. So, what do you expect, 11-5? Hmm...

Dashi, good thing you arent a betting boy . Haha

I see the twins are awake.

Question do you two share a bed?

Or do you still sleep in the same bunk bed. I heard YG gets bottom because he is a wetter.

You build thru the Draft, man(only if you find a good talent evaluator).

The Moreno one I really don't get. No one was showing interest, and he was injured. He could have waited after the draft to sign the 3rd down back who had 1 average season on his Resume.

Posted by: Dashi | August 19, 2014 at 11:36 AM

The Big Knock on Mareno was his lack of speed in getting to a corner which you need to do if your a RB in this Offense? So agreed on not getting this pick up. Players like Tarrence West or Mason were better fits but what do we know?

cocoajoe, imagine if you worked for this company?

You need a head of marketing, you have an astronomical budget that you could hire any available head of marketing you want and nail the position down.

Instead the company decides to promote the junior marketing assistant who was never really highly thought of anyway .. or they shift the head of human resources over to head up the marketing group.

These are the equivalent decisions this team has made OVER and OVER again.

As of now, it seems like a safe bet that Brady and NE will dismantle us in our inaugural Game of this Season.

1500 combined yards last season but he can't get to the corner oh brother I need to leave here soon my head hurts.

Dashi, Can THill at least get the doggone team to the playoff before you anoint him the 100 million dollar man???

Posted by: A Regular Here | August 19, 2014 at 11:58 AM

I think the type of front-loaded minimal guarantee deals A.Dalton and Kaep got will play a big role in Tanne negotiations. Also inn 2017 (After team excersises 5th Yr. option) when he's up for his payday Wallace huge deal will be off books barring huge turn-around in attitude and play!

f4l, unless Wallace turns it around this year, he won't even be around next year. he is playing for a $10M payday next year.

There are guys who want and can take his spot. Although we will find ourselves in need of a speed WR again.

Where's Ted Ginn?

Last time I checked Dalton and Kaep were the starting QB when there team made it to the playoffs.

Last thing I remember THill doing is sliding instead of diving for a 1st down in the Jets games with the playoffs on the line...

Actually this place is starting to grow on me. I want to stick around to find out who this #4 WR is making 6 million that dippy mentioned. He doesn't exist as far as I know.

Mark you're one of the few people on this site who knows anything even close about football. Maybe Oscar too and a few others. Wallace should have a good season in this new offense I think.

fin4life bro have you checked my WR depth chart yet? Looking good.

I told you (A month before Pre-Seaon) If we kept 5 one of the Slot guys would go and felt the Bigger D.Williams had a shot to stick (Went to Camp as I remember telling you and saw him in Hartline's spot alot with starers) You replied you felt 6 would stay with all 3 Slot guys sticking and it looks the more likely scenario.

In reality neither one of us was to off (Given you said Williams had zero shot) but then you wonder about taking another Slot guy Rd-2 with other pressing needs and Gibson looking so strong with Matthews inside? Right now Tarrence West looks awfully good in Cleveland!

The other was LCB were I told you I thought J.Taylor would get his shot at LCB with Finnegan in the Slot. Taylor has since been moved to RCB behind Grimes with Davis getting the work at LCB and Finnegan as both LCB and Slot. Taylor looked good in Camp but it's not translating however Davis is slowly emerging as maybe the future. I just never liked the Finnegan move and have made it no secret.

Big Baby, it sounds like at least they are removing the excuses. OK deep ball chemistry was not there. OK Wallace doesn;t want to practice deep balls with Tannehill because he doesn't want to hurt his hamstrings. OK, use pre snap motion, move him around, use him on crossing patterns. If Wallace doesn't succeed this year, it's all on him. It won't be the offensive system, and it won't be the qb. This qb may be flawed, inexperienced, whatever but one thing he can do is fling the football around. other than Wallace, every single receiver they have had has developed and/or had their best seasons.

Top QB's dont need a great OL.

For all the hype RG3 gets looks like he still isnt recovered from that torn ACL he suffered. His long ball looks pretty though.
