The Pat Devlin lovefest ends

In the end, all the jokes about how much Joe Philbin loved Pat Devlin and how players viewed Devlin as the coach's adopted son matter little because the Dolphins are moving on from their fourth-year quarterback.

The team which signed Brady Quinn Monday evening made room for the new backup quarterback by releasing their third-stringer of the past three seasons.

Devlin's release was first reported by FoxSports1's Mike Garafolo.

And it wasn't so much Devlin's inability to mount a challenge for the No. 2 quarterback job that doomed him with the Dolphins but rather his inability to get on the field. Devlin had not practiced since the Aug. 2 scrimmage in which he injured a hamstring.

Marginal player. Not practicing for 10 days.

Bad things, man.

"I think he's definitely developed," Philbin said of Devlin. "I like his play speed. That's one of the great strengths that I think he has. He plays the game fast, he's decisive when he's back there. But again, let's call it what it is, and he has to come out there on a more consistent basis to get a good, thorough evaluation."

There had been rumors that the Monday quarterback tryouts the Dolphins staged could affect Moore's status as the No. 2. The thinking was Moore is costing $5.5 million against the cap this year and cutting or trading him would save $4 million.

Not likely to happen.

The tryouts were to replace Devlin.

Brady Quinn is an experienced veteran but he's not likely to displace Moore -- barring a total collapse by Moore the remainder of the preseason.

Matt Moore is the Dolphins' No. 2 quarterback unless something significant changes. Signing Brady Quinn and cutting Pat Devlin was not that something.

Knuckle heads in this blog thought Quinn meant Moore was gone. Dumb Dashi, lmao.......

Quinn can nt hold Matt Moore's jock stap, why would Quinn mean Moore getting cut? Simply ludicrous. :-)

I will see P.Devlin starting for the Jags next season.

On this blog, Tard.

No fit in this O. Means long passes.

No; Pat Devlin will be resigned for the practice squad. He is still eligible. In this way, if Quin does not work out, then things will return back to normal.

Finally, a guy in this blog with a brain. :-)

Some Team will probably claim Pat Devlin.

What I don't understand is why the infatuation with a qb that can't threaten in the read option, I know the staff thinks e tanny can run it but truth is he is marginal at best, we need a Qb that can actually run the ball, Quinn ain't the one.

Dashi,

The way this draft shook out they could have taken him anywere between Rds 4-6 and today looked like geniuses with J.James at RT, D.Thomas panning out at RG and the future LT & LG in Henderson and Turner on the roster with Pouncey the anchor.

Remember however that Fat Albert was signed to a deal that guarantees 28 Mil for the next 3 Yrs when they can void the back end in 2017.

So really with the market for SH what it was you could have taken him in Rd-6 and maybe even plugged him in at LG for the next 3 Yrs. the way Dallas did with Larry Allen back in the day with Turner the swing back up Guard and of course insurance for the often injured Albert were Henderson kicked out and Turner went to LG.

In fairness we both know the Dolphins sent an Army to the UM Pro Day and it wasn't to see S.Morris! It was reported we showed interest in him and Al Hurns but you and I know that was a smoke screen!

I believe that like Anthony "Tank" Johnson (Whose had a solid camp by the way) who went from sure 2nd Rd'er to UFA with the failed combine drug test the team felt he would be there as well and the Bills pulled the trigger on a throw away pick.

It's not a bad thing to move on...the only way he moves up to 2nd team is IF and when Moore leaves/is cut. I'd rather have an additional WR/RB than a 3rd string QB.

Posted by: bond,david bond | August 11, 2014 at 10:11 PM

I still do not see this move as a guarantee the dolphins carry 3 qb's into the season. I do not expect Quinn to beat Moore out for the backup spot either.

If Devlin goes on ps, I expect Quinn will be cut by Aug 30th last cut day. Unless, by unfortold miracle he beats out Moore. Just don't see that happening in this universe. Quinn has been absolutely awful everywhere he's been since leaving Cleveland. Exactly why he was available to sign today.

That's not a good thing only 7yrs into your career as a pro qb. Quinn is the new 3rd string qb, nothing more, nothing less. That may only last to Aug 30th. :-)

We can't even cut Wheeler because of his guaranteed money.
Ireland strikes again!

Posted by: FinsTech | August 11, 2014 at 10:15 PM

We can cut him and eat his 5.5 Mil guarantee if we needed the roster spot but who do you relace him with on what's loking more and more like the weak link Defensively?

Posted by: Still/Wade/County | August 11, 2014 at 10:16 PM

I'm interested to see if that actually pans out with Devlin. I don't see the point.

Does Quinn have a strong arm? Perhaps Lazor can develop him.

Why????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Devlin could never advance past 3rd string here. Like us, may teams only carry 2 qb's into the regular season. If Devlin was our #2 instead of Moore, we're a shoe in for top 5 2015 draft pick.

So would any other team with Devlin as their primary backup. Look at the out of work qb's we auditioned and did not sign. All re at least as good if not better than Devlin and are also available. No worries to Devlin being poached.

I read were he's still eligible but am left wondering?? I thought you could only hold a player 2 Yrs. on the P.S.??

I agree with your post @10:26 about were Quinn fits in all this (Unless Moore is really banged up?) and see them bringing in a guy to get the Matt Hazel's of the World better work while quality reps for Landry as well Vs. everybody's scrap heap talent for the next 3 weks.

Don't feel to much for Brady given the vet minimum is 800K and he'll probably (including small bonus) Leave at the end of the month with anywere from 100 to 150K in his pocket not bad for a few weeks work!

Mr. Bond and Still/Wade,

I do not believe Devlin is eligible. Here is the pertinent rule:

A player is eligible if he does not have an accrued season of NFL experience. Players gain an accrued season by being on the active roster for at least six games.

I believe Devlin was active as the 3rd QB last year for all season and according to this can't be signed for the practice squad,

Am I missing something?

Some Team will probably claim Pat Devlin.

Also ?????????????????????????????????

No sense in worrying to much! When there was more upside to the equation nobody poached him then.

Posted by: fin4life | August 11, 2014 at 10:26 PM

No problem eating Wheeler's contract. It's not like we're cap starved. The real problem is an adequate Wheeler replacement. Where do you find him short of a trade right now. It's highly unlikely you find that pilfering thru someone elses trash.

Cutting Wheeler would free up an extra roster spot another position. Still I wouldn't want to get to far ahead of myself expecting a Wheeler cut.

Posted by: fin4life | August 11, 2014 at 10:32 PM

Devlin has never advanced since he has been here. I've never understood the "lovefest" with a UDFA QB that has just hung on to the team for years, and never challenged for second string.

Well something needed to be done. Labato was absolutely putrid on Friday night!

I agree that Quinn wont be on the 53 man roster unless Matt Moore is really badly injured.

I believe Devlin was active as the 3rd QB last year for all season and according to this can't be signed for the practice squad,

Am I missing something?

Posted by: Gllmiaspr | August 11, 2014 at 10:34 PM

I thought only Moore was active behind Tannehill with Devlin on he P.S. for the last few Yrs.? hen again I thought once on a P.S. for 2 Yrs. you were no longer eligible? Anybody clarify that for me!

Posted by: Gllmiaspr | August 11, 2014 at 10:34 PM

It's already been released by the team that Devlin is still ps eligible. He's never played in a live game and has only seen preseason action in his brief career.

I'm interested to see if that actually pans out with Devlin. I don't see the point.

Posted by: Darkoak | August 11, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Familiarity is what I'd say but the O is new so I don't get it one way or the other just some kid Philbin likes so he gets his pay days will Skeletor is Coaching.

Posted by: fin4life | August 11, 2014 at 10:40 PM

The coaching staff has clarified it. They said Devin still has ps eligibility. That's clear enough or me. I'm not concern about the intricacies about anything less than player on the 53 man roster.

One thing is clear, anyone on ps is there because the coaching staff did not see them as good enough to be on the 3. :-)

Has Philbin been fired yet?

Even if Devlin wasn't placed on ps, I still se no team signing him for anything more than their ps either. :-)

Posted by: fin4life | August 11, 2014 at 10:43 PM

Didn't Philbin inherit him? Hard Knocks left him out entirely, remember?

Posted by: Still/Wade/County | August 11, 2014 at 10:37 PM

I didn't say anything about cutting anyone! The poster stated we were stuck with him given his guaranteed 5.5 Mil in 2014. To which I replied we could eat the money if a roster spot was needed but for who on a very weak LB Corp as it is! Like you stated at this point you won't find a suitable replacement unless your goin via trade route which has been scrapped by the most part in the FA ERA!

In todays game Big trades happen less and less everybody just waits out FA unless your getting a Reggie Bush for a 5th Rd pick to avoid compettition for his services.

I had to say this about Ireland for 4 years before they listened.

Why would you sign a guy how has thoroughly proven he cant play at this level?

What's your deal? It's a question that didn't mitigate your back handed sarcasm! By the way our best D player Cam Wake was in fact once a P.S. player in N.Y.!

Anthony Armstrong left our P.S. for some success in Washington while Marlon Moore who was once on our P.S. and is now the Kick returner in Cleveland were he looked real good last Sat. Vs. Det. and were I might add two Fins Coaching Staffs failed to place him with marginal returns on Thigpen IMO!

Just last Yr. Sam Brenner came off our P.S. to start very adequately at LG. He being one of two with the other being Jordan Kovacs from P.S. to ST's contributor. So while in your infinite wisdom you see it as a waste of time I watch and look for progress to see what's there!

2 things:

With the hammy issue coaches may feel doubtful Devlin gets into a single preseason game.

2. Obviously, you missed seeing Seth Lobotomy play in Friday night's preseason opener.

Quinn's at least slightly better. :-)

Posted by: fin4life | August 11, 2014 at 11:02 PM

Also, ps is no more than a pseudo way of protecting a player by forcing other teams to use regular season roster spots to get that player. To poach a player you've gotta a release a player from your 53 man roster.

So that player poached had better be better than the one you're releasing. Because someone else may sign that player too. He cant be that much of a scrub if he made a 53 man roster spot when the ps poached player did not.

That's the only real importance of a ps imo. During the regular season its an ever evolving chess board. Once in a blue moon does anyone hit the lottery with a ps player. :-)

No it isn't but given I've known you over this line for about 5 Yrs. I was just wondering? I never take this very seriously but that was maybe the 3rd time today! So I ask!

Posted by: Still/Wade/County | August 11, 2014 at 11:12 PM

See that's better an educated response. I didn't know you had to cut a man from yor actve roster. I thought a better money deal was the motivation in moving for those guys.

Wow! A woman jumped on some train tracks in London to get a Baby stroller that had rolled on with a commuter rolling in. The infants parents were busy with there attention on something else. London Police is sending the Baby to child services, really! You think?

Posted by: fin4life | August 11, 2014 at 11:13 PM

Lets see........ last time the dolphins did what I wanted or expected them to do........ NEVER!

So what I say or expect of the dolphins is totally irrelevant. Just like any other blogger here. In this we are al totally equal. So no one here is any more important than the other. No Matter how we would all like to think s. :=)

Ha! Why not save us some actual green and cut TPuke while we r at it

fin4

Yes, the only way to sign a ps player is to your 53 man roster. You have to cut a guy or he would be player 54. LOL

You can not poach a ps player to place on your own ps. :-)

If you say so I personally don't expect the Miami Dolphins to do anything. I come on here to comment the actions already taken while offering my 2 cents on a course of action which along with 1 dollar will get me a cheap cup of coffee at Dennys.

I don't believe anybody here thinks themselves somehow superior to anyone else blogging but thats just me? We've both been here a long time and I just know already when you've got a bug up your keester. It reflects in your writing.

Whitner said all the right things about the competition between Hoyer and Manziel, which does appear close in the wake of Saturday’s preseason opener here. Close, with Manziel gaining fast on the turn into home … which no one expected a month ago. This looked clearly to be Hoyer’s gig, at least to start the season. Not anymore

Ho ho ho! Look at ESPN go! See that gents!

I think its highly unlikely Devlin would be poached is because the preseason games he has played he wasnt too impressive. So, teams haven't much tape to put together to warrant poaching him.

During the regular season someone's starting qb has to go down, backup comes in. Then, Devlin might have a snow ball's chance in hell of being poached and signed to someone's 53 as the next in line backup.

Still they would pray he never has to actually play. :-)

Still/Wade/County,

By the way we're all talking up-n-down this Brady Quinn thing and NBC's Sports Final with Joe Rose and the lovely Courtney Fallon thought so much of this move it was barely mentioned and in passing while closing there segment.

I do however wonder about bringing in a Brady Quinn and not kicking the tires on a Jon Vilma for an Unguaranteed minimal deal?

That's the trouble we run into when getting ahead of ourselves and thinking we have someone peg. That's tough to pull off in the real world when personally interacting with each other on a very consistent basis. Doubling impossible thinking you got it mastered over the internet. Lmao....

DO NOT SEE THE ADVANTAGE OF SIGNING QUINN......."HE WAS A BUST THEN....AND HE IS A BUST NOW"

Posted by: fin4life | August 11, 2014 at 11:35 PM

Vilma's Numbers ast 3yrs:

2011 54 tkls 11 gms
2012 37 tkls 11 gms
2013 1 tkl 1 gm

Does this look like a player with much left in the tank to you? Also, at this point in his career I'm sure his coverage skills are eroded too. Nah... think we should pass.

Still/Wade/County | August 11, 2014 at 11:36 PM

Sometimes you post and it's sharp your feedback is well thought out and then there's days were you come on in a confrontational manner. I don't need a degree in psychology to figure that out about you in particular all I have to do is read. That's all I meant by it if you took the comment in another manner. Everybody has there little tells even in this format.

The best lb solution was to draft the Bama lb over James. We just did not have that luxury.

If we did, Misi would still be a Sam, the Bama-backer at Mike, and Ellerbee at Will.

Sally,

You are a walking contradiction. First, don't cut Moore because of the Cap. Then Cut Wheeler, the Cap does not matter.

Which one is it Sally? 17-IN-UR-ASS

I have a feeling Tripp's going to be a fine mlb. He just isn't ready yet. I believe by 2015, Tripp sends Misi back to the Sam, and McCain sends Ellerbee packing. McCain becomes the starting Will by 2015.

Tripp and McCain just aren't ready to become starters just yet. :-)

Great thing about McCain is his great athleticism allows him to transition to lb. He exclusively played de in college. So, as you would expect, his coverage skills are a huge work in progress just yet.

But, his great speed and athleticism should allow him to evolve his coverage skills.
