"Rolling egg,' other micros coming to Fort Lauderdale
The smallest of the small-- yes, even the ‘rolling egg' -- will be coming to South Florida next weekend, Feb. 15-17, at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. You can even buy one.
It happens at the annual Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale event, sponsored by RM Auctions.
These micro cars, or city cars, sprouted after World War II when shortages of fuel and raw materials made owning a big car a mere fantasy. BMW came up with the Isetta at left, affectionately known as the ‘rolling egg.' Fiat offered the Topolino, or ‘little mouse.'
"Microcars have enjoyed growing interest and appreciation in value over the last few years," said RM's Donnie Gould, a 30-year classic-car guy.
Also among the minis is a 1967 King Midget, powered by a 12-hp Kohler engine.
The three-day sale also will roll out some fine classics, sports cars and muscle cars. Among them:
- 1946 Lincoln Continental Indy Pace Car believed to be driven by Henry Ford II
- 1966 Batmobile
- 1969 Dodge Charter RT, used the '05 flick Dukes of Hazard
- Seven Ford Mustang Shelby GTs
Admission is 15 bucks a day or $25 for a weekend pass. A public preview begins 9 a.m. Thursday; auction days are Friday through Sunday. It's a hoot- if you love the classics, don't miss it. More information at rmauctions.com
