Marlins, Helms Agree to 2-Year Deal

The Marlins and backup infielder Wes Helms have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.Helms

Helms told The Miami Herald last week that he felt comfortable in his utility role with the Marlins and had informed the team of his desire to return.

Helms, who was typically used as a pinch-hitter, spot starter, or late-inning defensive replacement at one of the corner infield spots, hit .243 with five home runs. As a pinch-hitter, Helms went 13 for 41 (.317) with two home runs. The Marlins obtained Helms earlier in the season from the Phillies.

Terms of the contract were unknown. Helms' old contract with the Phillies contained a $750,000 buyout for 2009, which the Marlins inherited when they obtained him in April.

Helms, 32, has also played with the  Brewers and Braves in his 10 major-league seasons.

His pinch-hit home run on Sunday at Shea Stadium snapped a 2-2 tie and helped to propel the Marlins to a 4-2 victory that eliminated the Mets from the playoffs.

Jose Medina

If this corrupt county makes us psy for this stadium, I will no longer be a Marlins fan!

Good. I mean, you don't even understand the economics of it anyway, obviously. Tax dollars ARE NOT BEING USED to fund the stadium. ARE. NOT. BEING. USED.

But even if they were, if you can't get it through your head that no baseball owner outside New York City can build a baseball stadium BY themselves (and even both of the new NY Stadiums are getting public funding), and this deal is all it takes to make you not be a fan, you probably weren't one to begin with.

Get out of our fanbase. Go cheer for the Yankees or Red Sox or some other team.

lol....nice shaUN. Wes Helms?

Waste Helms? Yeah, that'll help us get into the playoffs. Please sign some more players off of the garbage pile. This franchise is a joke.
