Helms leaps, avoids collision with Pujols

Wes Helms made the play of the day – week and possibly the month – Sunday afternoon when he leaped over Albert Pujols while trying to beat the throw to first.

With a runner at first Helms hit a hard grounder to third and the Cards tried to turn a 5-4-3 double play. Skip Schumaker’s throw to first was low and as Pujols stretched down Helms arrived at first.

It could have been a nasty collision at first, but Helms, remember he will be 33 in May, jumped over Pujols. It appeared as if Helms’ spike caught Pujols in the head, but Pujols remained in the game.
