Sean West Returned to Minors

Sean West is headed back to Double A Jacksonville after another rough outing Saturday in Arizona. The Marlins opened the young lefty following the 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Since the Marlins don't need a fifth starter until July 20, they are expected to call up a reliever in time for Sunday's series finale in Arizona. Newly acquired reliever Luis Ayala would seem to be a logical candidate for that spot. Ayala has made three relief appearances at Triple A New Orleans since signing a minor-league contract and has given up just one hit.

Look for Rick VandenHurk to take over the fifth rotation spot once it becomes necessary. VandenHurk is 4-1 with a 2.96 ERA in eight starts for New Orleans.

As for West, manager Fredi Gonzalez said the young hurler needed more seasoning in the minors and, specifically, in developing his secondary pitches. Gonzalez and West agreed that relying on a fastball wasn't cutting it at the big-league level.

Sean West needed to be sent down to the minors a very long time ago. If Chris Volstad continues on a downward motion he, too, needs to join West down there. Both of these guys have great secondary pitches, West with the change-up and curve Volstad with the curve but for some reason have fallen in deep love with the fastball and teams are getting thousands of hits off of them and in most cases they end up in homers... they neeed to go work on that. Rick VandenHurk, I hear is doing well and deserves to be up here based on that, but I don't think he should start... he too is one that has fallen in love with the fastball and has gotten away from the Holland Hammer that was so effective. The Marlins need to call-up an arm for the Pen and get a guy already on the team like Hopper or someone to start.

paolo just stop talking. Volstad has had like 3 or 4 rough outings but other then that he has been great for where he is in his career.

I hoping to see West work through his issues, nonetheless really excited to see Vandenhurk back. While his performance in 07 and 08 for the Marlins weren't great; I thought Vandy was sharp in the World Baseball Classic this year.

Michael, I think your better off not talking yourself until you get your facts straight.

What is wrong about my facts? he had a rough month or so and has been great other than that

Okay West did a great job in the Majors. It was his first time in the Bigs. Hes only 23 what do you expect. Hes not Randy Johnson......yet. Obviously he has time to grown and this experience was great for him. We all know he we only going to be up temprarily. Anibel needs to comeback strong and Amezaga needs to comeback strong. Marlins need to be on thier game this next half.
