Giants GM blasts Scott Cousins

Interesting how the Giants made no retaliatory gesture toward the Marlins a day after Scott Cousins ended catcher Buster Posey's season with a perfectly legal home plate collision but are now so hopping mad their G.M., Brian Sabean, is threatening payback.

"If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we'll all be happy," Sabean said during a radio interview in San Francisco on KNBR radio. "He chose to be a hero in my mind, and if that's his flash of fame, that's as good as it's going to get, pal. We'll have a long memory. You can't be that out-and-out overly aggressive. I'll put it as politically as I can state it: There's no love lost and there shouldn't be."

Sabean made his comments exactly one week after the collision, one in which Cousins bowled over Posey for what would prove to be the deciding run. Posey suffered torn ligaments in his ankle and a broken bone in his leg.

Cousins' agent, Matt Sosnick, told ESPN.com that his client has received death threats.

"It's an emotional time for the Giants and I understand Brian's disappointment," Sosnick told ESPN.com  "But his opinion is in the vast majority. It's a play within the rules and I imagine his opinion would be vastly different if Posey ran over (Marlins catcher John) Buck on a legal play and Buck was injured."

The Marlins and Giants face each other once more this season, at Sun Life Stadium for a three-game series on Aug. 12-14.

Sounds like a threat to me which is not good coming from a baseball executive.

Lou Vales

Hey Sabean, You better hope that a pitch does not "get away" from a Giants pitcher and hit a MArlins player in the head and kills him. Based upon your LONG MEMORY comments I do believe that would constitute pre-meditated murder.

Lou Vales

I wonder if Cody Ross will back off on his comments of support for Cousins that he issued after the incident. If Selig wants to take the time to withdraw his digits from where they currently are he might want to have someone in his office intervene with Sabean. There is also the question of "incitement to riot" the next time the Marlins visit San Francisco and some deranged idiot decides he wishes to extract revenge.

I've heard some ridiculous statements when Charles O. Finley was in baseball but I must admit this might be the DUMBEST comment I've ever heard. The only things that can stem from this are BAD and DANGEROUS. It's 2011, 330,000,000 Americans, assume 1/10 of 1% are NUTS and that is 33,000.Anyone want to hazard a guess how many of those are baseball fans and how many NUTS live in San Francisco. I'm conservative with the 1/10 of 1%. It's PROBABLY hiher.Does not sound like Sabean is wearing a flower in his hair.

Flatstick

What a moronic staement from this guy who is supposed to be an executive with some intelligence. This will only appeal to the lunatic fringe of Giants fans who are frustrated with the accidental loss of their best player and are lashing out because they have nowhere else to vent their misdirected anger. Don't you think that if the players really thought it was a dirty play they would have thrown at a Marlin in the very next game?

bob

I thought the Giants fans were above death threats, given what happened to one of their own at Dodgers Stadium. I guess all California fans are the same.

Glags

David Stern fined the Cavs owner for releasing an incendiary statement about Lebron when he left. The precedent has been set and MLB should follow suit. He's basically saying "I'm gonna git you sucka!"

Samson's Boyfriend

Well Marlins fans...Brian{I am not an IDIOT}Sabean is no dummy..You have to look thru the smoke that Sabes{to his friends,BS to most Giants fans},is Blowing out of his Double Wide trailer Rear end..my take is that he is trying to do 3 things..get his team fired up,get the respect of his Clubhouse and play up to the lunatic fringe Giants fans, which there are many ..Besides if the Giants finish without playing deep into Oct. BS knows he has a built in excuse now..I lost my clean-up hitter in May and I couldn't replace what he means to the team..I predict No retaliation will be Aimed at the Marlins in Aug..We'll See..Enough about this tired subject for now....Let's talk about the return of one NYJER MORGAN to Miami...I will make it a point to go to the Geico Sign in CF tonite, during an inning or two ,to give my personal greetings to him..It will be great..He rattles easy ,along the lines of Milton Bradley..Hope it's a rough 4 game wraparound for Mr Nyjer..more to come..

Richard

I don't think we would have heard any complaints from Giants fans if JT Snow had seriously injured Pudge Rodriguez on the play at the plate and had gone on to win the series. I guess it was okay for a Giants player to do it as long as nobody else does it to their players.

garpow62

What an idiot

rbleigh

Re Richard: Right On and may I add Sabean would have been singing Snow's praise as a hard-nosed ballplayer had Pudge dropped that ball.

Very short-sighted and I think Sabean's alzheimer's may be kicking in.

Gary

Wow, an MLB executive who sounds like a thug! Way to go in representing your organization and city, Mr. Sabean.

Jesse

I am a die hard giants from from san francisco. I bleed orange and black and have done so for over thirty years. I have always liked and admired sabean and his old school baseball ways. I am devastated by the injury to posey. that being said, out of line comments. So fat out of line you cant even see the line. Im embarressed by this whole situation.cousins did what anybody who plays ball the "right" way would do. Especially a kid trying to establish himself In a very competitive sport. I fully recognize that although horrible, posey was in a horrible position. Fundamentally speaking you cant receive a ball on a play like that with your leg tucked under you. Please know that not every giants fan is a lunatic. I for one dont think coysins did anything wrong.

Lou Vales

I spoke to a deputy in the Commissioner's Office and they are well aware of the situation.I assume the person I spoke to was not just trying to get me off the line.

John

The Giants didn't retaliate the day after, because the Marlins, wisely/cowardly, kept him out of the game. The play was no doubt legal, but also was unnecessary. Cousins wanted to blow up Posey and chose not to take the direct path to the plate. Cousins made his choice and the result is that Posey is lost for the season, and perhaps has lost his promising career. If everyone here believes in the old school baseball codes (like how it's OK to blow up a catcher if he's anywhere near the plate no matter the consequences) then there should be no surprise when Cousins gets hit by any and all Giants pitcher he ever faces.

WIGGY

Cousins chose to dislodge the ball from the catcher while running at break neck speed with his eyeballs bouncing inside his head. Once it was over it appears his aggression was unnecessary, and a star player out for season was result. Would it have been better had the Giants retaliated against someone else the next day, or Sabean made his remarks immediately on radio? Legal not synonymous with right, Cousins and Fish should expect reprisals and would then be wise to let it go. Jose Mesa told the world he was going to hit Omar Vizquel every time he faced him, and he did it without MLB interjecting itself. Hurt someone unnecessarily expect reprisals, apologize all you want. Take payback graciously and move on, Meat!

Samson's Boyfriend

Lou...What did you say to the Deputy in the Commish's Office, and what did they tell you before the conversation ended???

Samson's Boyfriend

Who cares what BS is billowing out of B.S about a play that happened 7 games ago..Talk is Cheap..Actions speak louder than words..alot of Baseball to be played between now and Aug 12 when Giants come to Miami..the situation and roster will be different for both teams when the Giants come here..When Aug 12 is here, that's the time to speculate what.if anything, will happen in the way of retaliation and retribution on the field...Everything up until them is just mental masturbation..rather talk about something relevant to Now,like the wraparound with the Brewers that starts Tonite..

Matt

This stuff I'm reading is just hillarious, especially the anti-Cousins rhetoric. I was reading through some of the comments on SFgate.com and some of those fans should be certified.

Ya know, Cousins could have gotten up after the play and started jumping around pounding his chest and looking for a Marlin to high five. Did he do that? No, he didn't. He immediately turned toward Posey to check on him. He was concerned about his fellow player after a very hard and legal play, which in HIS mind was NECESSARY to score, at the time, the potential game winning run. Had Cousins started celebrating like Lebron and friends did last night in the 4th quarter with plenty of game left to be played, then the animosity toward Cousins could be warranted to a degree.

A poster earlier said it best, in that Posey did not put himself into the best position to receive the ball and then incur impact. That comes with experience. Perhaps a change of position will suit Posey better when he comes back next year. I'd think you would want your best offensive player to not be potentially placed in such situations, not matter how rare they do occur. If he still wants to catch, then best of luck to him.

So, in conclusion: Cousins sends over messages to the Giants clubhouse, apologizes to every camera or microphone that's stuck in his face, personally calls Posey, etc. The guy's done everything right post collission. The funny thing about all of this is that Cousins actually comes out looking the better person. Posey refused to take his call or return any of his messages, which is well within his right. However, an executive taking personal and threatening post shots a week after the fact shows no class and realy paints the Giants in a negative light.

Samson's Boyfriend

Would like to see Cousins get Hot and start rake-ing the ball when he get's his chance's to play...Cousin's knows he's on the Bubble, like to see him rise to the occasion face the heat head-on and come out on top, giving His Larryness a good problem to have, tough roster decisions in late July....

denny

What a guy can't react emotionally when his star is hurt. If you look at the replay Cousin runs toward home plate on the pitchers side of the bag. COUSINS doesn't looking like the better person. He just wants the story to go away so he kisses some butt. BUSTER IS OUT FOR THE SEASON. What if it is his career..no sympathy for COUSINS..NONE

Matt

Hey Wiggy, this just in...Marlins have pitchers too. If the Giants want to retaliate, which makes no sense in the large scheme of things, then that's certainly their right and expected within the book of baseball etiqutte. However, what Sabean has done here is light a fire that will be burning hotter and hotter throughout the summer.

It is well known that when you retaliate for a perceived injustice directed toward your team you do it cleanly. You don't go head hunting or go spikes first trying to end a guy's career. (And no Giants fan Cousins did not attempt to end Posey's career) If you take things to that level, then you can pretty much expect a full out brawl. Let's see if the Giants show class in the manner in which they 'exact revenge'.

Matt

Cousins most certainly does look like the better person. When a baseball exec takes personal and threatening pot shots at another player over a week after the fact when within that same time frame Cousins has done nothing but apologize and send regards, then yeah the GM looks like a moron and only hurts what sympathy some fans might have for his team's plight going forward.

Samson's Boyfriend

Believe Me when I say Cousin's could give a RAT's REAR END about getting anybody's sympathy..GeeZuss,when will this Buster Posey BS end...

Matt

The Posey saga will end when one of two things start to happen: First, Sabean shuts his mouth and keeps his rants in house and Second, when Whiteside or whatever his name is starts to hit big league pitching. Not sure which will come first. Perhaps Giants fan wants to address..

denny

BULL..Cousins could care less about BUSTER'S career..He is more interested in his own career WHICH HE SHOULD BE. COUSINS COULDN'T CARRY BUSTER'S JOCK STRAP.

You guys have nothing to retaliate for against the WORLD CHAMPION GIANTS. You are the ones that should be worried.

You might also remember the year we are having. A DODGER FAN tries to kill one of our fans..now this. It has been an overemotional year for Brian Sabean. He spent the first week of the season by the bedside of a fan who was brutally attacked at dodger stadium. Who is still in a comma(who he didn't know). He spent the second week holding fund raisers for his medical expenses..Now he spends 1 week with BUSTER in the hospital. One heck of a year.

Matt

I sure as heck hope that Cousins is more concerned with his own career. And I don't recall anyone claiming that Cousins was, is, or ever will be the player that Posey is. That's a feeble attempt by you 'denny' to try to discredit something or someone. By you mentioning it, perhaps there is some doubt in your mind that Cousins is as good as Buster? We know he's not.

So, now you bring up the Brian Stow (sp) incident as a defense? Cousins received death threats from your fanbase! Death threats, really? Yeah, all this outrage about the horrendous act of a few thugs at Dodgers Stadium and the first thing that a minority of Giants fans thinks of once this happens is to kill Cousins? Brilliant, just brilliant. Been hypocritical much Giants fans?

Wow, Giants are World Champs. We didn't know that. What we do know though is that we won a few titles of our own recently and unfortunately for Giants fan we went right through you to get there. Keep sticking out your chest there, denny.

denny

No one said I agreed or condone death threats..nor did I bring up the Brian Stow incident as a defense. Just a simple way of possibly explaining Sabean's emotional state and his statement. You are an idiot-- you are VERY BITTER ---AND ANGRY. DO YOU FEEL BETTER NOW THAT YOU UNLEASHED YOUR NONSENSICAL TIRADE..

My chest is fine..do you have any balls?

Stan M

At least we are off the Pricilla baloney. The difficulty as I see it is that these guys are all in the same union. Therefore some unnecessary rule is likely to be instituted to protect all of the brothers. And baseball will be the worse for it. Why? Because collisions at 2B are probably more numerous than collisions at home plate, So if one collision is banned, will the other be far behind? And again baseball will be the worse for it. A pitcher can't really throw inside, body armour is now legal, a manager can't argue balls and strikes, a manager must remove a pitcher BEFORE he can go out and talk to him...boy do I hate unions even though some of this isn't their fault. I like to blame them anyway, probably because of the whole steroid mess when they tied baseball's hands. The funny thing is, more injuries are probably self inflicted within the player's own team with all of these little league celebrations after some wins. And as an old timer, I also fault Posey for not taking the time to learn the proper technique for blocking home plate. To try to blame a rookie for what was an instantaneous decision based primarily on instinct is beyond ludicrous, in my opinion.

Matt

A Giants fan comes over to a Marlins blog to make his presence felt by throwing around terms like 'jock' and sentences ending 'you should be worried' and I'm the idiot? Good stuff, denny. Nonsensical tirade? Another knee slapper from denny folks. Do I have any balls...Oh, it just keeps on coming. Ladies and gentleman how about a big round of applause for, denny!

denny

So intelligent..bitter...angry..idiot

Samson's Boyfriend

Where did this DennytheDoucheBag come from???

denny

I am right here in Florida...It is amazing that you guys would rather bash people than have an intelligent conversation...that says a lot. You don't want to see the other side of story..just your side. I won't say another word to you idiots. You proved that IGNORANCE IS BLISS on your part.

Matt

I'm not sure what any Marlins fan has to be bitter or even angry about, especially concerning the Giants. Just swept them, have a better overall record, haven't lost our best offensive weapon to injury for the year...hmmm. Perhaps the only thing is that the Marlins fan wishes that the fish were in the lowly NL West and not the East. That's it, I suppose. Even then, who cares. I don't.

Where do you come up with this stuff, denny? You're good man.

denny

KMA

Matt

Intelligence conversation he writes? This coming from the guy who believes that writing this guy can't hold this other guy's jock is 'intelligent conversation'...? Nevermind the We're World Champs (caps ommitted) and 'you should be worried' comments. Yes, very intelligent. Brilliant commentary. The hypocrisy is hillarious.

Glags

You know all this tough guy Internet talk is very unlike the perception I had San Franciscans. Sounds like Dodgers fans should also be scared of going to that park. What a bunch of hypocrites!

denny

KMA

Lou Vales

Samson, All they said to me is what they would say to anyone who called--They are aware of the situation and are looking into it.

I really appreciate all your comments and don't have much to add. You've done a great job.

that is definitely true what someone said about the Marlins having pitchers as well and although they are not as good, a few throw with just as much velocity AND the Giants have already labeled themselves as the aggressors. You are looking at significant suspensions.

Jose Mesa?? Jose Mesa?? Jose Mesa?? The ONLY thing of significance that clown is known for is blowing a 9th inning save for Cleveland that would have given the city its first World Series since 1948. He was a HUGE choke artist and I remember sitting along the first base line nand pounding my friends on the back as he walked in. Single Out. Single to Right(1st and 3rd). Sacrifice Fly Counsell and then a matter of time.

Joe Table---We Thank YOU!!!

Matt

He just can't hold back, folks. He can't heed his own words. denny just keeps bringing it and bringing it hard. When in doubt, go with KMA. Brilliant!

Stan M

Denny,
Are we to understand that having a different opinion immediately makes someone an idiot? That there is no room for discussion on a topic that does not meet your approval? Why is that , Denny? Explain to us how your differing opinion immediately qualifies for certification, but others who have contrasting thoughts should not be vocal for they are, as you call them, idiots. And all this time I thought the word "idiot" was a medical term. Now it can be applied to people who differ with you. We will have to make changes within dictionaries to indicate such gereralized assertions made by people such as you. I probably should criticise you for not understanding the difference between subjective and objective case when ranting, but I won't. Oh, yes I will and just did. Perhaps, just perhaps mind you, you are not the noble, intellectual who is talking down to others whom you consider beneath yourself.

Samson's Boyfriend

Matt,Stan the Man,Lou,Glags and the rest of the Gang...Matt..learned along time ago to not lower myself and argue with an idiotic moron, they're better at it because they have alot more experience....On my way to the stadium..Brewers put on a good show during BP with the Prince,Braun, and Weeks hitting Bombs..Gonna try and say hey to Kotsay and Counsell 2 of the good guy ex Marlins...Gonna go out to the Geicio Sign to incite the Fish Tankers sitting there to give NYJER the" Willie McGhee treatment"...I'll tell you guys what that is another time...Catch yu'all about an hour after the game...

Glags

Denny it's not about sides. The issue is that you cannot persecute one player for hurting another on a decision that was probably made 5 feet away from home plate. You can't say that his intention was to break his leg or cause undo harm. If you can say that with certainty then you're delusional. Some people have called him a thug and a criminal. You would think this guy has been playing for years in the league and has a history of this type of action. He's a rookie and he's on the roster because the team needs a fourth outfielder and has done nothing to be in a major league roster. Trust me his stock did not go up because of this.

denny

what the heck are you talking about..i tried to talk..all of you just attack..make wild statements and draw bizarre conclusions. If that makes you feel good go for it.

Glags

Alright then best of luck to ya' and your team.

denny

Actually I have no problem with differing opinions..since I am being called a douche bag might justify calling you idiots ..all because I have a different opinion..

kevin

The violations in question concern debt-service rules intended to limit a club's debt to 10 times its annual revenue, according to the Times. Other teams named in the owners' briefing were the Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins and Washington Nationals.

denny

GLAGS..you are right..I didn't think it was intentional...in slow mo you can see it wasn't. I think the 2nd baseman and shortstop are more likely to get nailed more times than the catcher.

I feel bad for COUSINS..he is from San Fran ..and said in the chronicle he is afraid to go home. BUSTER is a crowd favorite..and the heart of the team. Sad

Matt

Samson's BF: Oh, I didn't lower myself to anyone's level. I don't resort to name calling in an attempt to discredit someone else. It's just strange that this fella comes onto this blog spouting from his mouth with the tough guy attitude. It's even more funny that he thinks we were 'attacking' him, making 'wild statements' and drawing 'bizarre conclusions'.

denny is above such things you see. He did not do any of the things that he of course blames the rest of us doing. Further, I don't recall saying denny was an 'idiot' yet he found it quite convenient to call me that. A hypocrite of the first degree. Plenty of enough evidence to support using that term, denny and coming to that 'bizarre conclusion'. You can defend yourself and your team. I enjoy some good discourse, but only with someone who can contribute to the discussion with something other than terms like 'idiot, 'KMA' and the like. Really? Grow up. You want to have an intelligent debate, then let's go.

We attacked him...man, that's funny stuff. I'll give him credit for being a passionate Giants fan and a comedian, I guess.

Matt

I'm confused again. Someone says they have no sympathy for someone, yet they also feel bad for them. I give up.

Lou Vales

Well,Florida beat Manhattan 17-3 and the Lady Gators Softball Team beat Missouri last night. I was actually sleeping when Matt called me excitedly to tell me how attractive the Florida players(The LADIES!!) were. SEC Track and Field Champion, SEC Baseball Champions, Softball World Series, SEC Tennis Champions--a veritable juggernaut.

I can tell Matt that all females at Florida are Goddesses. As Matt would say--Go Gators!!!
