This should be interesting...Gotta like the attempt to improve. Most of us were hoping to see Carlos at 1B and now we got it. Just hope it's not to late. I hope he has that "veteran leadership" as well. This team could use a bit of that.

Any news on Giancarlo's MRI?

Leo Orestes Barberie

Dear Flag, Sorry. I'm just not seeing any chance. Heath Bar has buried this team. The Nats are just too good to catch them at 9 GB . The Marlins would have to beat out 1 of these 3 teams:Giants, Dodgers,Braves-----for the Wild Card and I'm not even counting the vastly improved Mets and Bucs and a couple of others. With the decreased attendance already being manifested I believe they should be playing for the future and not acquiring 36 year old fading First Basemen. Of course Dominguez and Rasmusen were never going to make it because they were high Beinfest selections but the Marlins should still be blowing this up.

For anyone wanting to know why I'm now a relief pitcher still using an alias, a power hitting first baseman who never hit for power and a smooth fielding second baseman, I would trouble you to read the latter comments of the last Blog.

Stan M

Very encouraging that he showed up to play right away. Big post on ESPN about AL needs.Apparently Detroit is desperate for a 2nd baseman. I'd give them Infante if the right deal came up. Put Salerno there and if he fails, Bono. Infante hasn't been the same player for the past month. Surprisingly, his defense has dropped off. That lineup is about as good as we can do for the time being so bring 'em on.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Sorry. One LAST comment for awhile. Was there any evidence of severe griping from Sanchez about being demoted. Our Fearless Leader made it sound as if Gaby had been in seveere%$^%& mode with his comments. I can't see gaby--based on previous comments---not understanding that his performance had precipitated the move. However, it seems like Guillen still wanted to get a shot in. Of course the shot was directed against a guy who still has options and no power. That is the type of guy you get a last shot at. Right????

flagstafffishfan

Agreed Leo that this team is out of it. I hope to see some trades as Stan points out that Infante isn't a great option moving forward for this team and could be a small trading chip to restock. I noticed Ozzies shot at Gaby yesterday as well. No surprise there, funny how he will protect Heath Bell but had no probs letting Gaby know how he felt. Gaby is Cuban and we know how Ozzie feels about Miami's Cuban population right?

Looking towards next year...Will we see Lomo at 1B? Maybe the team should be thinking about protecting Stanton's knees and move him to 1B? Who's next to be traded?

laurelbowie

Detroit Tigers desperately seeking a second baseman, unless they have just acquired one and I missed it. Infante would be a tremendous upgrade for them. So who could we get in return?
By the way, I'm just playing along. I'm not at all convinced we should even think of trading Infante. He hasn't been as sharp lately as he was earlier in the season, but none of the Marlins has. And he's still got the second or third best BA among the regulars.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Hey, I'm a young 64 and trying to go hit some golf balls but your comments are keeping me home. I certainly agree with Stan about Infante. Have followed Tigers since 1956--although I would actually pull for the Marlins if the 2 played in a World Series--and have been commenting for days with my friends in Detroit that this should get done. Tigers have about 3 catchers besides Avila who are seen as definite guys to make the Bigs. Get one of those catchers and hopefully 1 of their very good young pitchers and that would be enough. Would be GREAT if they could expand this into something MEGA like Hanley to Detroit to play SS again and the Fish get Brendan Boesch, Jacob Turner, one of the Tigers good young SS's at Lakeland and Ramon santiago.

Infante and Ramirez for Boesch, Turner(No.1 Pitching Prospect), Very good catching and SS prospect, pretty good pitching prospect and a pretty good utility infielder to play 2B and SS. Boesch to LF, Morrison to !B, Turner to rotation next year, catcher up next year, pitcher to Jax. Lee packaged somewhere else for prospects before he even gets here. How's that??

Alex

No way should Stanton move to 1B. He will eventually be a Gold Glove Right Fielder once he has his knee scoped out; he has speed and a rifle arm, he's justt 22 and still learning the position. There is no serious knee damage there; a scope should take care of his problem.

Lomo should be playing 1st base next year and NOW, as well. He is terrible in LF (ALTHOUGH HE TRIES, STAN; HE'S JUST NOT AN OUTFIELDER, THAT'S ALL) and his knee issues are only getting worse playing out there.

This line up might work for a week or two, providing Lomo doesn't have to go back on too many fly balls over his head, because he leaps and never catches them. It will also work providing Lomo doesn't have to charge any balls hit in front of him, because he never gets there in time and they always drop in. Other than that, Lomo is fine in Left Field. LOL.

The biggest issue is what happens when Boni returns. Assuming Boni goes back to CF, what happens to Ruggiano? That kid deserves to play EVERY DAY.

Of course, they could move Infante, and put Boni at second, move Hanley and put Solano at 3rd, leave Ruggiano in CF, Lee at 1st and just suffer with Lomo in LF. I think this team might improve with Hanley gone.

Glags

LOB, that's a hell of suggestion but quite a reach. Besides, I've asked this before do we trust this current group to make another bustbuster move.

laurelbowie

Stan M,
I see I came along a good half hour after you and repeated (almost word for word) what you said about the Tigers "desperately" needing a second baseman. I guess I should have used milk rather than Glenlivet on my Wheaties this morning. Sorry.

Alex

I'm not at all surprised that Infante's defense has fallen off. An infield is A UNIT, even though it is composed of four INDIVIDUALS. If one or two members of that UNIT start playing lackadaisically on defense, doing stupid things, forgetting who's supposed to cover 2nd base, and start making crazy throws, THAT STUFF OFTEN SPREADS TO THE ENTIRE UNIT.

I never watched Reyes regularly as a Met, so I had no idea that he was so lackadaisical a defender. I thought he was a top notch defender, but now watching him play every day, I see that while he sometimes makes great plays, he is also prone to carelessness, mental errors, and laziness in the field. That is starting to spread to the other members of the UNIT. Hanley started out great at 3rd base, but recently he has been making really bad plays there, and now Infante has also caught the disease.

I know Stan M loves the guy, and all, but if we are going to be 100% HONEST, we have to say that so far Reyes has been a major disappointment. He's hitting about 65 points lower than last year, and a good 20 points lower than his lifetime BA. And like I said, his Defense leaves a lot to be desired. I do have a theory about him, though. I think he's one of those players who plays the way his TEAM is playing. In other words, if his team sucks and ain't going anywhere, he doesn't play his best either. If his team is playing really well and is in the hunt for a playoff spot, I believe he will play better.

Alex

LOB, I think those trade scenarios are OUTSTANDING. In fact I think they are SO GOOD that there ain't a snowball's chance in hell that this inept Front Office and slimy ownership will EVER do it.

Alex

One more thing. I can't believe that around here I'm actually a YOUNG guy. It's actually kind of cool; I get tired of explaining to young knucklebrains that there was a time when pitch counts didn't exist, when "closers" were just relief pitchers and they often pitched 3 innings, and managers didn't change pitchers every single inning.

bob

The Nats are not too good to catch at 9GB. Remember, the Nats have a critical weakness: Strasburg has an innings cap. The Nationals will fade in September. Remember last season the Cardinals were 9GB the Braves for the Wild Card to start September. The Braves, like the Nats, had (and continue to have) one critical weakness. Unlike the Nats, it was Fredi Gonzalez who was the weakness for the Braves. Say what you want about Guillen, but he is nowhere near as bad as Fredi.

bob

Man I'm really missing Giancarlo. I hope it's nothing serious.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Dear Alex, Thank you for the compliment. You were not here when I used my real name and numerous people would post as me. One guy even set up a fake web site and put a phony picture of me up there. I find crap like that hilarious but my wife of 35 years told me to cease and desist. I just realized why you kept posting "58", you actually thought that was old. I run 8 miles a day on an elliptical along with other stuff as I really do plan on making it to at least 90 UNLESS Ozzie does not like that choice of Camus we that Flags and I are hoping to buy him in Phoenix.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Go read the Detroit News Baseball Blog. They are even discussing Infante now. I know a scout in Detroit organization and I'm going to try to get more info from him. Sorry I don't know the name of all the catchers but one is McCann and he is expected to be up next year. Avila is blocking him but he is still really good. We probably can't get him, but the next 2 are just a notch below. The Tigs have grown disenchanted with Boesch but he is still young with great power and even yhough he's LH, he hits left handers better.

2013

Reyes SS
Boni 2B
Boesch LF
Stanton RF
Morrison 1B
Ruggiaan0-CF
Solano 3B
McCann-C

Turner in the rotation, Santiago utility SS/2B and very good SS and pitching prospect almost there.

Leo Orestes Barberie

I'm not playing golf It's almost game time. If you guys want to read great baseball blogs with MANY participating go to the AJC and Detroit News. The vitriol directed towards Leyland makes Ozzie look as popular as a Bathing Suit and Stiletto Heel Contest at the Clevelander.

Alex

LOB, I try to stay in shape too. I still work out and all, but time and gravity are the enemy of all men's physiques...LOL...

I like your thinking though, about this team.

flagstafffishfan

Great posts today! Still no news on Stantons knee?

Stan M

LB, if you are ever in the Asheville area, Hendersonville actually, you must drop in for milk and cookies (soft naturally). We could discuss our beloved team in between naps. I knew that LOB runs frequently. At my home, LB, we can sit, dunk our soft cookies in Scotch and turn on an outside hose and watch the water run. That is, if the excitement wouldn't bother you.

Glags

Can I ask a question without being ridiculed? I know this may be blasphemous but what if Lomo and a top minor league guy can bring in Greinke or Felix Hernandez. Would you do it? We've all been saying how much of a liability Lomo is at LF and that we want more playing time for Ruggiano and with the Lee acquisition neither of those concerns appear to be easily resolved. Sounds crazy to say but Lomo more than anyone seems like the odd man out.

Stan M

Glags, as much as I like LoMo's upside, I'd make that trade in a second. Trouble is the other teams would want more, at least for King Felix. Grienke is a free agent and will be too expensive for Loria, but it should take less to get him.
Flags..., can't find out a thing about Samson's knee. Am hoping the aquisition of Lee isn't because the team expects Samson to be out for some time. However, during the Spring, I remember reading that the team felt that LoMo's knee problem was more serious than Stantons.
I think team might actually trade Infante. Are they waiting for your OK, LB?

flagstafffishfan

I'd take that trade too Glags. So mums the word on the knee right now. Nice game by Buehrle.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Dear Glags, Why would you be ridiculed? I would make that trade in a nanosecond.

Great story--Well, I'm telling it so of course I think it great---but as Ben Bradlee said"We'll decide if it's great", ANYWAY about 6 years after after one of the Dr Virgins, of Miami Dolphin fame, had CLEARED Mercury Morris to play with a BROKEN NECK--True Story--I'm sitting in the 3rd row at a Dolphins game and Dr Virgin walks in early before the game and I said "Have you cleared Larry Gordon?" Let's just say that Larry had already left us. I have always had my doubts about medical opinions applying to Miami pro athletes.

laurelbowie

Glags,
Hernandez hasn't been as dominant in the past couple of years — but I'd still give up Lomo and Infante to get him. The question is, would Loria be willing to pay his salary, which I think is about $20 million a year through 2014.
Stan M,
I hear Hendersonville is nice this time of year. You've got a museum there with dinosaur eggs, right? No offense.

laurelbowie

They're saying that Stanton has "loose bodies" in his knee, and will probably need some kind of surgery in the offseason. But I've heard that most jocks have loose bodies floating around in their joints. How much they hurt depends on where they are at any particular time. You guys probably know more about that than I do. I'm with Stan M — I'm more the Scotch and cookies type.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Hendersonville, Asheville(The Berkeley of North Carolina), waynesville and Maggie Valley are all great. Only someone of Stan's means could so easily afford that great life.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Laurel, It all depends upon the physical make-up of the loose bodies. Some bodies are far looser than others, however, you must also take into account the financial ramifications of allowing the loose bodies to gain a foothold.

Alex

I only ridicule people that are obvious TROLLS just bashing the team. With that said, no I wouldn't make that trade and I'll tell you why: we will have Lomo for a few more YEARS. Carlos Lee is gone in three months.

Leo Orestes Barberie

Dear Alex, Do you believe Seattle would make that trade? I'm not making that trade. I have not seen The Big Cat pitch this year but unless he has had a detectable change in velocity, I'm not doing it. Guy is too good. In My opinion.
