The choices were these for Oklahoma State lefthander Andrew Heaney: a $2.6 million signing bonus to join the Marlins -- about $200,000 less than he demanded -- or a season in independent ball while he waits for next year's draft.
In the end, with the signing deadline down to hours, the Marlins' first-round pick went with the money.
Heaney, the ninth overall pick in this year's draft, agreed to terms and now needs only to pass a physical to put his signature on a contract. The deadline for signing draft picks is 5 p.m. today.
The two sides appeared to be at an impasse on Thursday when the pitcher balked at the Marlins' final offer of $2.6 million, below the recommended slot figure.
Wow..the kid and his agent buckled..at least Loria will have 200k to buy Rustoleum for the HR sculpture.

Baseball America says once Heaney is onboard, he will be rated the Marlins third best prospect, behind Yelich and Fernandez. I know it's old news, but that just re-emphasizes how barren the Marlins farm system is.

called it yesterday, why go back for another year and risk injury and worse play ball in the independent league. I guess his agent threw Harrington and Crow out there as examples too.
Wow, great job by the Marlins FO for sticking to their guns; if the above is true. We lehmans don't exactly see the contracts and the ever more important fine print.

But yes, if your the Fish FO in the grand scheme of things why deny another 200K to the kid if it'll hopefully satisfy him in the long run. Geez, that's still more than 2X my current salary.
