Marlins sign OF Reed Johnson to minor league deal

The Marlins signed veteran outfielder Reed Johnson to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training.

Johnson, 37, has spent 11 seasons in the majors with the Blue Jays, Cubs, Dodgers and Braves. Johnson, who swings from the right side, has a career .282 batting average.

Capable of playing all three outfield positions, Johnson was used primarily as a pinch-hitter with Atlanta the past two seasons. He hit .297 in 37 pinch at-bats with the Braves in 2013 and went 18 for 43 (.419) as a pinch-hitter for them in 2012.

The Marlins now have 26 non-roster invitees on their spring training roster.

The Marlins are trying anyone and everyone hoping to find the one guy that still has gas left in the tank. They're trying to find the next Greg Dobbs somewhere in there.

juanv

where is the first baseman platoon partner for jones? I read they might sign jeff baker.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

26 non-roster invitees. Wow!

Clark, I bet you can make this roster. You should go for it ... then you could use the bump in pay to buy your friend Manny a shirt with a collar.

Mr Blackwell

Manny only gets collared shirts if they come with a clip-on tie. Double wide. Size and clip-on.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Good idea! Anything that'll deflect away from that grill that won't quit.

Lou Vales

Reed Johnson is young---for a Supreme Court Justice.

Written by a NY sportswriter who covers the Mets:

There is a fair amount of buzz in scouting circles about the Miami Marlins. One scout went so far as to call them a “trendy” pick to be surprise contenders this year. The belief is based on projecting that a young rotation led by Jose Fernandez will step forward (the staff is filled with the likes of talented but unproven pitchers like Nathan Eovaldi, Henderson Alvarez and Jacob Turner).

Most scouts love leftfielder Christian Yelich, and approve of the signings of veterans Jarrod Saltalamacchia and, to a lesser extent, Rafael Furcal. And then there’s Mr. Beast, the player coveted by every other team, Giancarlo Stanton.

What does it all add up to? The Nationals are a near-unanimous pick to win the National League East, and the Braves remain solid (though without Tim Hudson and Brian McCann, and facing tough decisions in coming years about the arbitration status of a young core). Many scouts are very down on the Phillies, and will believe that the Mets are better when they see it.

In fact, in talking over the past year to the guys who cover the organizations of the N.L. East, many scouts are more bullish over the Marlins’ future than the Mets, citing what they consider a more balanced farm system, with with pitchers and position players (professional rankers like ESPN’s Keith Law have the Mets’ farm as better than Miami’s, proving that there is no such thing as ultimate truth or consensus in these matters).

The Mets probably need another year until they’re taken more seriously in the industry, when Matt Harvey is back, and Zack Wheeler has more experience, and Noah Syndergaard will theoretically be around for a full season. For now, there is more talk about the team in south Florida."

I think the Marlins will be contenders for a playoff spot this year. Their ERA was the best in their history which includes 1997 and 2003. Most of their holes have been filled . At 3rd base the Marlins hit 1 homer last year . Whether its Mageehee or Ditrich they will probably combine 15-20 homers. Catching offensively was pathetic. The Marlins have a world series winner in Salty. The Marlins lost 35 games last year by 1 or 2 runs. Look how dramaticaly that will change and with 1 year more experienece with the pitching staff. THE MARLINS HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!!!

Juan Yanes

THE MARLINS ARE UNKNOWN, THE PAST SEASON WERE very PASSIVE BUT FOR THIS SEASON THEY BECOME SO AGGRESIVE HIRING GOOD PLAYERS; many fans like me are very happy with this new behavior of the owner; now we will have a competitive team capable of win more than 90 games. Congratulations

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Eddie S, I guessed you missed the part of the World Series where Salty threw away one game with an awful throw to 3rd, then was benched for better defense.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Juan, maybe it's a language thing, you know, ingles con barreras, but I have to ask ... WHO are you congratulating, and for WHAT? I just want to make sure, you're aware the season hasn't started, right?

Dionysus Thelxinoe

And those 90 wins, does that include 2013?

Eddie S

Juan will be happy with 85 wins. With such an incredible pitching staff and the addition of Salty (his offense will offset his defense) the Marlins should contend for the wild card.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Eddie S, David Sampson couldn't have said it better. In fact ... hmmmmmmm ...

Lou Vales

I have often wondered if Samson has his 4 "friends" as the Forum Regulars under assumed names. Stan DOES exist and is very passionate and knowledgeable. He is the one I can vouch for.

juanv

with all the signings and the farm system in the shape it is in with 6 picks in the top 120 in the draft and high international bonus money they can trade. How can u guys still have such negative views. 26 non roster invitees is great more competition and more depth at the triple a level. they have two top ten lefty prospects. and a good amount of position players in the double a level who could contribute this season over all this team is not so bad. and for all the comments Dt makes about Samson he sounds more like a spurned ex. the marlins have maintained they will not overspend and hand out no trade clauses. So to expect them to do it is dumb. as far as the owner selling he is making money of baseball and non baseball events so please keep it to what's on the field wich is realy not as bad as you think.

juanv

and the 26 roser invites is on par with the mlb average Arizona.mariners, giants, braves all have over 24 invites. out of those 26 invites the marlins have atleast eleven that are minor leaguers who are getting experience with the big club like moran, avery romero witgren conley, suggs, and nappo. so much for the crap u spew.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

juanv, it would be very much to your benefit if you would try to follow some basic guidelines when posting here: Recognize above all else that all anyone, INCLUDING YOU, ever posts here are OPINIONS. Those opinions are subject to scrutiny or questioning, I think everyone agrees it's fair game, as long as it's done with RESPECT. As an example, you've posted here that you think Redmond is a bad manager approximately 184,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times (that's just a rough estimate, you understand), and I happen to think that it's idiotic and boring to keep repeating the same nonsense over and over and over. But notice that I've never personally criticized you about it, like you just did with me up above. That's because, for the most part, I skip your stupid posts since you never, ever have anything worthwhile or original to say. But, again, notice that I've never said anything PERSONAL about you, like you just did with me.

So what I would suggest is that you keep braying about Redmond, and most of us will just continue to ignore you. In the meantime, if you happen to disagree with anything else that any of us have to say, other than you think the Marlins are the greatest thing since sliced bread, please feel free to contribute. But never bite off more than you can probably chew by personally criticizing anyone here. It just won't end well for you.

Just a suggestion, okay, buddy?

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Oh, and by the way, you don't get to tell anyone what they can or cannot post here, okay?

juanv not juan yanes

haha, I never complained about Redmond not once, I complained about webb and qualls leaving.I have commented on the marlins every time. to think that comnting on Samson and accusing people with opinions that some how they work for loria or Samson. is idiotic at best.for you to smash eddie, yanes,or anybody else who is optimistic you are the one who is doing a disservice to this blog no real discussion here just nonsense about ownership with negative comments about every signing so I will continue to have my opinions on everything u post just like u. all the other posters have a right to have there opinions shared and communicated just like you I am just tired of your dumb nonsense. I can choose to ignore it but an It's so easy crapping on your dumb look at me ego.

thar they blow

has Diondouchebag taken over as the blogs Ol'Fart in Charge from senile Stan M? Soon they will out blowhard each other.

Flav C.

DT,

I think you are mixing Juan Yanes with Juan V.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Flav, you're right, I did mix Juan Yanes with this moron. Thanks. Sincere apologies to Juan Yanes. My mistake.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

And as for juanv ... little man, if you think you're up to it, have at it. In a battle if wits, you will be unarmed.

DT, in my opinion, you are being both unkind and prejudiced against anyone with a skin condition or teenager with acne. There are many who are so inflicted and could have an intellectual capacity far above that of the average human. Our antagonist might look like any other human being. It could be that he only shows that he is as dumb as a rock when he attempts to converse with his superiors, that is, all of the rest of humanity.

juanv

With such insightful cunning intellectual. I am surprised clark doesn't block every other poster so the amazing diotondix can tell you his ramblings. You have single handedly insulted with your asinine comments more than one poster on this sight. You lack social skills and respect for other's opinions because they don't share yours. And the sad thing you arguments lack any insight with today's baseball industry.

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Your mommy wrote that for you, didn't she?

Dionysus Thelxinoe

Stan, you got me there!

Julian

I love that I get to look at the scoreboard of Henderson Alvarez's walk-off no-hitter every time I go on to the Marlins Homepage on the Miami Herald. Great timing Henderson!!

Eddie S

How many of you thought the Blue Jays were going to finish in 1st place last year? Just remember last year the Marlins had their best pitching staff in their history. WATCH OUT THIS YEAR THE PALYOFFS ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN

Juan Yanes

Dionysus: I said Congratulations to the Marlins owner because he really open the pocket right now and then he deserve this word; about my english, it is Ave, novertheless I have earned five credentials in this beautiful country; Accountant, Realtor, Taxes, Morgage Broker and Freight forwarder, thanks.

Juan Yanes

About the new Marlins roster it seem very well, for me is the best of the NL east division; I notice only two big holes : # 1. Lack of a decent lefty reliever for late innings and # 2.- Redmond still hesitate in late innings and is not proficient in make the line-up in every game.

juanv

juan Yanes, el equipo se ve bien. espero que de verdad hagan algo. Si estan haciendo mejores cambios. As for diotondix your mommy wrote it? that is great brings back memories when I was five and when you didn't have an answer that was the fall back. I would talk about yours but I don't like to dig up old dirt. you are a sad case always trying to be the top dog ha hahahaha loser you clam for attention in a blog and it's sad man. I can see why Samson left your ass it's hard trying to be an alpha when your both Chihuahua's.

Camera Mike

Juan, While I do think the roster has improved from last year I do disagree with you on it being the best in the east. We still have a questionable third basemen, are taking a risk at second by having a career shortstop man it, and are going to have a hard time finding a consistent bat to protect Stanton in the line up.

In my opinion the team is better then last season but will still finish behind at least the Nationals and Braves. Though I do hope by seasons end your opinion proves to be the right one.

Lou

You guys are angrier than I once was.
