Rafael Furcal leaves game after aggravating groin injury

Will it ever end for Rafael Furcal? Will his 36-year-old legs ever allow him to wear a Marlins uniform?

On Friday, in what was the start of his second round of rehab for Double A Jacksonville, Furcal left the game in the fourth inning when he aggravated his groin injury.

According to Associated Press reports, Furcal walked off the field with a slight limp and refused comment. But Jacksonville manager Andy Barkett said Furcal is day to day.

"We'll see how he feels tomorrow," Barkett said. "He moved around fine in pregame. He just hasn't played in a year and he's trying to get his body right. I feel for the guy. He's a great player and all we want is for him to get back in the big leagues. I know he's a little frustrated and we're all frustrated for him because he's such a competitor. But, at the same time, we've got to be cautious."

Furcal began the season on the disabled list with a hamstring injury suffered in spring training. Then, while on rehab assignment, he strained his groin and returned to South Florida. Friday was his first game back on rehab assignment, and he went 1 for 2 but aggravated his groin injury while covering second.

Marlins made good moves this offseason except here. For the same money they could have signed Bonifacio who was available, much younger, less money and plays every position. Now this guy is probably done for at least another month and Boni is hitting .350 for the Cubs.

Marlin Fan

Hopefully Furcal never plays . A waste of money. Koehler pitched well last night . Some key hits . Nice to see Jones come around. We need to never pitch Marmol again, even 6 run leads are not safe with him .

what kind of logic is this

They could have kept Qualls for the money given to Furcal. Marlins already have, Solano, Dietrich, and, Lucas, all can play multiple infield positions. They also signed Baker. How many 2nd basemen does a team need?

Al-Kendall

It may take a while, but hopefully Furcal gets to play by early June. In the meantime, we can see what Dietrich is capable of doing, which so far is good enough, except for leading the team in errors. The play last night to get Gordon (perhaps sheer luck) was great! And, he has as many RBI as Saltalamacchia in 9 less games. Tonight we should see what Red will do on the 2B platoon. My guess is he will go with Lucas.

Cleveland Spider

Jacob Turner pitches tonight and IMO he is the weak link in the rotation. I am hoping that Andrew Heaney gets called up in June to take his spot in the rotation. This team could be even better after June when Heaney gets called up.

I think that if the Marlins hang around the race in July they could be dangerous. If they are still in the playoff hunt in July, I would trade for a veteran 8th inning set up guy (perhaps trade Turner for him as part of a package). I cannot stand to see Marmol in games. I have the same feeling with Marmol that I had when I saw Reynel Pinto. The guy is awful.

Juan Yanes

Marlins should replace RHP Carlos Marmol for RHP Henry Rodriguez which is still in the minors, - Marlins Starters pitchers are very well but the bullpen seem still unsafe and vulnerable; it should be reinforce because in most games you can't make more than three runs

jmkie

Juan Yanes, have you seen what Rodriguez is doing in the minors, he's been terrible. Lost 14 innings, 18 walks, 4.40 era. No Thanks.

jmkie

Better solutions are Capps, Hatcher, Dyson. Not a big fan of any of them, but better than Rod.

Stan M

Cleveland Spider,
That's a really good comparison. How can any of us forget Pinto? I'm amazed at the way some of these guys are hitting. It's a pleasure watching them. Isn't it time to stop referring to Koehler as the #5 starter. He's at least #4 now, and maybe #3.

A bit of history. Exactly 100 yeas ago the "Miracle" Braves came out of no where to win the NL pennant. I think they were in last place as late as mid season. Could history repeat itself a century later? Nah, but right now it's fun to even speculate..

Marlins only put 4 players on a recent list of 150 top prospects and only 2 (Heaney and Moran)in the top 100. Let's hope that's not realistic. Marisnick (who has hit very well over the past 10 games) and Nicolino are not on list.

Regarding Bono, Marios. To toot my old worn out horn, yours truly was one of few on the planet who liked the Toronto trade and said so here more than once. However, I also said that of all players sent up North, I was most sorry to see Bono go. One can make a pretty good case that he is now the most valuable player of the lot. Reyes current stats look like Hech's from last year.

Eddie S

I believe overal Marmol has been effective. His biggest problem historically is he walks an average of 6 per nine innings. This year he has walked very few HOWEVER IF HE WALKS THE FIRST BATTER REDMOND MUST TAKE HIM OUT IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Stan M

But he won't, Eddie, but he won't.

Alex

"How many 2nd basemen does a team need?"

EXACTLY. They definitely should have spent money on the bullpen and that is this team's Achilles heel, no question. Cleveland Spider you have said what I've been saying all along: if this team can hang around at around .500 or a few games over, they definitely have a shot at making a serious playoff run because of their fine starting pitching and the ability to hit they've shown since picking up Salty, McGehee & Jones. BUT THE BIGGEST QUESTION, AS ALWAYS, IS WILL LORIA OPEN UP THE PURSE STRINGS AT THE TRADING DEADLINE. In 2008 and 2009 he DID NOT, and both years the Fish had good teams that finished over .500.

Alex

Renyel Pinto is one of the many reasons that I hated Fat Fredi when he managed here. Over and over again he went to Pinto and over and over again Pinto blew big games for us. Fat Fredi is so BY THE BOOK that once he decides a guy is his "8th inning guy" or his closer, or whatever, he will keep going to that guy no matter how many times the guy FAILS. He's very stubborn, and once he decides that a player is "his guy" in a specific role, he will keep using him that way rather than make a change, because making that change is like Fredi saying "I was wrong for using him in that role". Instead he will keep going to that well and when the player FAILS, it's the player's fault: "he didn't execute".

I also agree about Marmol. He is either good or terrible; there is no IN BETWEEN with him. Therefore if Redmond must use him, he has to keep him on a very short leash: at the first sign of "Marmolism" (walks, hit batters, wild pitches) he HAS TO YANK HIM OUT IMMEDIATELY. Unfortunately Stan M may be right about Redmond when he says he won't do that. Red seems to sometimes share with Fat Fredi the bad trait of sticking with a guy even when it's obvious the guy has absolutely NOTHING that night. But he isn't as consistent with it as Fredi is. I HAVE seen Red come out and YANK a guy who was shaky or just wasn't getting it done.

Camera Mike

Alex,

I think everyone in here knows the answer to whether or not Loria will be willing to spend at the trade deadline. I also believe the recent move optioning Dobbs further hurts the chances Loria surprises us all and does spend more as when you add Dobbs' salary to that of the amount the Marlins are still paying Heath Bell the team is spending $8.7 million for two players not to play. If Furcal continues down the path most on here thinks he will and stays on the DL the amount the Marlins are paying for guys to not play jumps to $11.7 million. Some teams and owners might be able to accept that amount of wasted money and still add but we all know that doesn't apply to Loria or this franchise.

That all being said this season has been far more enjoyable then last year and I hope the Marlins continue to play hard, compete, and put us all to be in a position of disappointment when Loria doesn't add players at the deadline.

Stan M

I was never a fan of Fat Fredi either. As a Marlin manager, he sat on the bench in a Budda position, looking for all the world like he was looking for anyone to tell him what to do next. Fredi had a news conference after this 3 game sweep. and it was downright embarrassing. He couldn't say anything without a "you know" mixed in. There were many instances when he had 3 "you knows" in a relatively short sentence. Other than the old man from NC, our only good manager in the past decade was Gerardi, and boy, do I miss him. Loria has made many mistakes, but releasing Gerardi was the most egregious.

Cleveland Spider

Jacob Turner sucks! Get him out of there. I would rather see Slowey than Turner. This guy is going to cost the fish a lot of games.

Camera Mike

Cleveland Spider, hopefully he only costs the fish 3-4 more games before they bring up one if the young arms in June. Though I completely agree on rather seeing Slowey.

Alex

Yeah, Spider, Turner looks like he's throwing batting practice. This is a guy who doesn't have decent velocity, so he has to have really sharp breaking pitches to be successful. The problem was his breaking pitches were hangers tonight. His stuff reminds me a lot of Chris Volstad's, and that is not a good guy to be compared with. There wasn't that much difference in speed between Volstad's fastball and his breaking pitches; this also APPEARS to be the case with Turner. They should send Turner down and bring up the lefty Heaney. But knowing how this team has done things in the past, they won't do that. They might actually become REAL CONTENDERS and then they would have to open those Loria purse strings.

Camera Mike

Alex,

I was thinking of Volstad as well watching Turner pitch today, which like you say is not a good comparison. I think if he keeps putting up bad numbers and not lasting to even the 6th inning that the team will call up a pitcher, probably Heaney, in June.

Alex

But you know what? I do not recall Turner's velocity being THIS slow last year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Turner's fastball up around 93-94 MPH last year? Well tonight it topped out at about 91, and a few were at 90 even. That tells me he is not 100% well yet and should not have been called up.

Cleveland Spider

Alex,

I totally agree. They should bring up Heaney. He is ready. Unfortunately, the cheap owner is not going to bring Heaney up before June (it has to do with having to give him a raise earlier). I would rather go with Slowey for now until they can bring up Heaney.

You are right Turner belongs in the minor leagues. He needs to work on his craft. I would love to see the Marlins trade him (he still young) for a late inning set up guy.

Marlin Fan

Nice to see Baker and Mathis hit. Turner due to his lack of velocity , needs to mix his pitches well and hit spots . Of not you see the results. Capps looked good tonight .

Alex

Oh yeah, Capps looked EXCELLENT tonight.

Alex

Gotta give Ozuna credit! He was made to look like a guy who was susceptible to off speed stuff earlier in the game, but he battled Wilson relentlessly, who seemed to want to prove he could get his fastball past him, and Ozuna kept fouling them off. Then when Wilson took something off and threw a slider, Ozuna jumped all over it. Of course it was not a very SHARP slider, but still. My point is that Ozuna is starting to use his head and is learning how to hit in the big leagues. He still has a ways to go, but it's nice to see him starting to take baby steps. He has had some ABs this year that were really poor, as if he had no clue what the score was, or what the situation dictated.

Cleveland Spider

Game over. Marmol (AKA: Reynel Pinto) is in the game. The Dodgers must be so happy!

Alex

And I bet they STILL don't get rid of Marmol after this.

Marlin Fan

Marmol is horrible . How many more times do we have to suffer thru this ???? Heath Bell was enough . Where was Ramos, hell where was anybody ?

Flav C.

The most annoying part of it all is that the team had plenty of opportunities to avoid going to Marmol.

Alex

I bet that Redmond will STILL SAY "I haven't yet decided who my 8th inning guy is. It could be Marmol, it could be Dunn..."

Also, if Redmond had used a pinch runner for McGehee with Baker batting they might have scored on that flare hit and the game might have been over right there. But Redmond seems to have a dislike for late inning defensive changes and for using pinch runners.

Cleveland Spider

Marmol is a disgrace. I knew it. What was in the minds of these front office people when they signed Marmol?

Marmol was awful with the Cubs. I knew the Marlins always had a chance when the Cubs brought in Marmol.

Alex

Ramos? He must be in Redmond's dog house for some reason. To me Ramos is the guy who is the best reliever after Cishek, and Redmond has TWICE skipped over him in two games.

What was in their minds when they signed Marmol? Probably one thing: MONEY. Marmol must have come very cheap.

Flav C.

Alex, who would you have used as pinch-runner for McGehee?

Cleveland Spider

Alex- They could have signed my next door neighbor or anyone for the price that they signed Marmol. They let Henry Rodrigues go for Marmol who is an experienced guy in the bullpen. I would have took a rookie in before that bum.

Well like I said when I saw Marmol, game over!

Alex

Putting a game like this in the hands of Marmol does not reflect well on Redmond. That's two games already that I gotta say were blown by Redmond's poor bullpen management. Now if Cishek is needed tomorrow and they don't have him available, that will be Red's fault as well, because there was no reason to burn him yesterday like that. I thought he did that because he intended to use Ramos tonight.

Cleveland Spider

The Marlins used that bullpen a lot tonight. They better hope that Fernandez can give them a complete game tomorrow. Oh that is right Redmon does not allow Fernandez to pitch complete games.

Alex

I don't know, Flav. Was anyone available to pinch run? If not, I guess he was stuck with McGehee. I'm just bummed here. You seem to know what's going on with this team. WHAT THE F*** is up with RAMOS? Is he hurt?

Alex

This team's Achilles heel is still the bullpen, as I have been saying since even before the season started. At least Capps showed great stuff tonight. But Marmol is garbage and Dunn is still shaky despite looking better lately.

But at least this team continues to HIT. There is some consolation in that. Turner looked very weak tonight. Fastball topping out at 91 mph? I could have sworn he hit 93-94 on the gun last year. Flav C, we need that kid Drayton up here and Heaney too.

Stan M

Someone mentioned Beck. He pitched one inning last night and gave up 3 runs. His ERA is over 7.00.
I think Redmond did a good job using his roster until he brought in Marmol. Ramos must be hurt. They simply must release Marmol. Rather than Heaney, the team should bring up one of the minor league relievers. That fellow who Flav has been featuring would be a good choice. Again, it's the little trades that kill this team. Miller was sent to Boston for nothing as was the Hopper to Tampa Bay.

Alex

Redmond in the postgame press conference when asked why he brought in Marmol: "he was the freshest arm I had". Really? Ramos did not pitch last night. Marmol did. Man oh man, I can't stand watching him in these post mortems. One of these days I would love to hear him say "hey, I messed up. I made a poor choice there. My bad".

Flav C.

I don't know as much about baseball as most of you here, but when your reliever loses 3 mph of his fastball (dropped from 93-94 to 90), stop using his 2nd best pitch (slider), and uses a bad pitch as his secondary (curveball), it is clear to me there is something wrong with the pitcher. In this case I'm talking about Ramos. The last 3 times he pitched he was shaking his pitching arm a lot.
My take on today's game is a bit different. This game in my opinion was last on the 8th, 9th, 10th, when the team had plenty of opportunities to finish off the Dodgers.

Flav C.

By the way, maybe it is a coincidence but Nicolino pitched only 2 innings tonight. Not sure if he got injured or got called up to AAA, to replace Bryan Flynn. Again it is just speculation from my part. And please, seriously: stop the Henry Rodriguez conversation. Tonight he walked 4 more in AAA. I don't need to see a worsened version of Marmol with the Fish.

Flav C.

Forget the Nicolino stuff. He got injured.

Stan M

Flav, you have been more of a Redmond advocate than most of us. And although the team didn't put the game away in the innings you mentioned. at least Redmond had the right guy up in each situation. This time, it wasn't any error on his part. Little things I could question. He might have pulled Turner when he put 2 runners on, obviously had nothing, and that damn Cuban coming up. Also with Dietrich at a 3-0 count, I would have given him the take sign unless it went to 3-2. Yelich K in that key situation was, in my opinion, the most surprising and frustrating moment in the failed comeback. We need that LH reliever from AA ball that you've been talking about.

Alex

Agree with Stan M about needing the kid Drayton that Flav talks about. And Flav, I guess you were being sarcastic about not knowing much about baseball, but if Ramos is really hurt, what is he doing here? Shouldn't he be on the DL? As for his velocity drop, he himself said he wasn't worried about it, and except for giving up the GW hit to Gattis the other night, I haven't seen any signs of ineffectiveness for Ramos. I mean Flav, have I missed something;it's not like he's being lit up! I wish Redmond was as leery of using guys like Marmol and Dunn, who HAVE burnt down the house, rather than Ramos, who has NOT.

Marlin Fan

Flav c you are right the Marlins had missed opportunities . Stanton striking out ( on out of the strike zone sliders ,again) with the bases loaded . Having the bases loaded and I think one out, and the only run they have gotten was walked in . It is frustrating though to battle back from 6 runs down , only to have Marmol blow another one . I think ( and I never thought I'd say this , a God send Slowey is. Since for all intent and purposes we have a four man starting rotation ( no one has stepped it up) for the five spot. Slowey has been able to eat up innings an at least keep the games in reach . Hopefully this is resolved sooner than later .

Alex

And am I the only guy who noticed Turner's velocity drop? His fastball was 90-91 yesterday, whereas last year it was 93-94. But Turner will evidently get more starts, while Ramos, who has pitched well DESPITE the velocity drop, sits on the bullpen bench. I don't understand it.

Alex

Alex

Marlin Fan is 100% right about Slowey. Guys always dog him, calling him a BUM, but every team needs a guy like him. While he has been ineffective as a starter, he's been quite good in long relief, often going 3 innings and not throwing too much more gas on the fire; he might give up a run, but that's about it. And he allows the hitters to get the Fish back in the game.

Flav C.

Alex, when I mentioned Ramos not being ok, I think he is probably in the same situation as Dunn a few weeks back, when he had discomfort in his arm and got a few days off. He got back much better. Maybe that's what Ramos is going through. For all accounts, he has allowed more BBs in a 11 IP stretch than before in his career. And to be honest, his last game against the Braves, he was bailed out by good defense in the outfield.
