Under center

Paul McCall is expected to get the first shot at the quarterback job when spring practice opens next Tuesday.

Paul is a smart guy (electrical engineering major) and has a leg up on his competition by being the first quarterback to be exposed to the new offense Mario is going to run.

Speaking to Paul at FIU's NFL Pro Day earlier this month, he told me he likes the new offense and that it is going to be a little more uptempo than the pro style offense FIU had the previous 5 years.

Obviously, he wasn't going against Penn State or Arkansas when he practiced last season, but Paul showed he can move in the pocket and scramble.

He'll need to have a big spring, because after seeing game film of the 3 freshman quarterbacks coming in, don't be surprised if one of the 3 freshman takes the first snap at Penn State.

It's unfortunate that Don Strock never gave Paul the playing time he needed to develop at the end of the season. With the team at 0-10, Strock rarely played Paul even though he knew that Paul would be the likely starter the following season. That lack of experience at the QB position is going to hurt this team this season.

I'd like to see one of the mobile rookies get in there and play. We need to pick it up on offense, drop back passers just haven't gotten it done.

Coach Strock should've given McCall some more playing time, but i think he kept Padrick in for a reason. Padrick was playing his final games and im sure Strock did not want to take those away from him. McCall might do well if he can have a line to protect him. If our OL is as bad as it was last season then we can expect to see Colt Brennan.

Who is Colt Brennan? Do you mean Colt Anderson?

Anybody who's named Colt should be a starter. Period.

I am hoping that whoever einds up under center will be a true field general and can help guide our team to the endzone.

god just let them do better than last year. im excited not only for the upcoming seaon but for the one that follows so we can play on our own stadium ! that will be exciting

Cristobal seems like he'll play the best QB and that is great. I don't cacre if the kid is 17 throw him in if he is our future.

I hate when coaches (Strock) play the upperclassman regardless of ability, out of pecking order. Padrick was horrible last year, it was gross incompetence on Strocks part to not have at least tried McCall, etc for extended time last year.

First of all, I'd like to say that this blog is amazing. Thank you for adding it.

Secondly, I'd like to add that I agree that Paul should have had more playing time last season. Padrick just didn't do it for us. I don't know why Strock kept having Padrick take all the playing time, even if he was a senior.

Well, MiRi, let's not forget how unprotective our offensive line was. I don't think McCall wouldn't done much better if on average he had only a couple seconds to throw the ball. Padrick was a preseason SunBelt QB favorite, but his surroundings didn't help him much. And there were some times of "greatness" when Padrick wasn't rushed, like that down the middle bullet to Samuel Smith during the Maryland game. I think our concern shouldn't be so much WHO our QB will be, rather WHO will be giving him the time to be a quality OB in the pocket.

This would be great, although i cant help but feel sorry for Paul Mccall. before recruiting it was pretty much a sure thing that Paul would be our quaterback next season, now it seems uncertain. the good thing is that this will promote competition between quaterbacks with the end result possibly being Paul Mccall as our starter with a great deal more skill.

I don't understand why everyone is so caught up with Paul? Everyone should get an equal chance to compete for the starting job. However with the inexperience of our O-line, even though most have had PT, we need a mobile QB who can roll out and give himself more time . As freshmen I do believe they will go through growing pains, but in the end we will be better off. Don't sleep on Bryan man from the Mock. dem GC boys got game.
