The First 2008 Season Honors For FIU

The unveiling of the 2008 All-Sun Belt Team that is voted on by SBC coaches and the media (yours truly included) is still another week away, but several Golden Panthers got All-Sun Belt honors from Phil Steele Publications on Thursday.

As if there was any doubt, T.Y. Goodbye dominated the PS's All-Sun Belt team earning 3 positions on the Rm first team: receiver, kick returner and punt returner.

Hilton is second in the nation with 2,074 all-purpose yards and has 10 touchdowns.

Also on the 1st team are offensive lineman Joe Alajajian, defensive back and FIU's leading tackler Robert Mitchell (left) and punter Carlos Munera (right).Cm

Defensive back Anthony Gaitor, FIU's interceptions leader, made second team.

Center Brad Serini, defensive end and FIU sack leader Quentin Newman and linebacker Scott Bryant made the third team.

Gppaw_4 Don't forget to vote on GE's nickname in the last blog. Also, will have the Western Kentucky/FIU preview and predicted score on here on Friday afternoon.

Perry28sl_081129_d3a6471_2  Gppaw_5 Check out a story on FIU running back Darriet Perry (left) by yours truly in Friday's Miami Herald. Thanks to Sam Lewis for the DP photo on the left, where he's carrying 2 Hooters with him.

Pete, great article on Perry!!! That was RB FIU wanted last year and they got him...great to see he has promising future at FIU.

I thought Gaitor would make first team all SBC, but congrats to everyone that got honored. He'll probably get voted first team by the SBC coaches and media. I would hope McCall also gets consideration, he has been solid all year.

GO FIU!!!!

Great story on DP, PP!!!! He certainly looks like a good RB for the next 3 years...

As for WKU score:

Greetings, to PETE and the entire GOLDEN PANTHER FAMILY !!!
Again, your writings and this blog are great.

We all know it's very important that we win our football finale tomorrow.
I believe our young team has improved tremendously from last year, with a few exceptions.
The following will help game execution and improve with team maturity.

1. The big celebrations (energy spending) in the field should be saved for after the game.
Our players seem to relax or lose focus right after a great play or series of plays.
Remember the game continues.

2. When we play zone-defense I believe our defenders stay too long on zone. In
other words, once the play has developed and the quarterback remains with the ball,
our zone must immediately close-in on their receivers like man to man.
This is especially true when the game approaches half-time or in the fourth quarter.

3. At times in the games the coaches seem to be a little too conservative, both on offense and especially on defense. We must blitz more often in the critical parts of the games.
If we don't take risks we can't get the big places, the others teams seem to make on us.

4. The third down efficiency will improve, when we run, if we do it to the outside more often, mixed with the quarterback option plays. The faster the runners obtain full speed, when going outside, the better their chances of gaining more yardage when the cutting up-field is made, faking the defender.

5. I never understood using running plays on third and long yardage situations, which we have tried in the past.(risk).

6. Lets repeat successful plays and or series of plays more often, especially to the opposite side of the field.

7. Lets plan on having the quarterback take-off down field in passing situations more often. If timed correctly, the defense will be out of balance and the passing will be more efficient.

8. Lets mix passing more often to the running-backs and tight-end on third downs.

LETS GO GET THEM GOLDEN PANTHERS !!!

LETS PLAY TOUGH AND WIN BIGGGGGG !!!

The FIU GO-PA-WZz predicts
FIU 35- W.K. 21 !!!

Hello again to, Pete and the entire FIU Golden Panther Family.

Before this football season is over, I must congratulate Coach Mario Cristobal, his staff and the entire team for the successful 2008 campaign. It looks like just a beginning, of greater things to come.
So, Go,
All the way,
BIG TEAM,
All the way !!!

As you know the team we play tomorrow "Western Kentucky" will be a new member of the Sun Belt Conference this coming season (2009).
Please have them added to the (2009-Miami Herald) College Football "Team By Team" schedule page, printed on Mondays during the season as was "Louisiana-Monroe" previously.

########################

On another subject, please refer to our FIU/ aggressive panther LOGO depicted through out the Miami Herald Sports pages since it was officially adapted by our University.

Today (Friday, 12/5/2008) it appears again on the top left hand corner of page 6D,above your team insight notes entitled "FIU PLAYERS MAKE MAGAZINE'S LIST".
Turn your focus on the spaces between the letters, especially the "F" and the "I".
Notice the dark shading/cutout/block out or what ever the Printing/Editing departments wants to call it.

All our FIU logos are consistent that the color or shading between the three (3) letters are the same. In this version the spaces should be white or blanked out (no ink).

Lastly or maybe it should be first reason, the printing between the "F" and the "I" looks exactly like, one half (1/2) or the right side of the University of Miami logo. Please have that area of the logo removed or blanked out.
