FIU/Western Kentucky LIVE GAME BLOG

Fiuhelmet Season finale, GPP Nation, as your Golden Panthers take on the soon-to-be-Sun Belt member, Hilltoppers at FIU Stadium on another pleasant December Miami evening.

Wk_2 FIU looks to snap a mini and costly 2-game losing skid tonight and finish the 2008 season on a high note. If we've learned anything from this season it's that this program is headed in the right direction as evidenced by their nice turnaround from 1-23 the last 2 years.

Quijote, stuck at work and wondering his internet options: 1) Here on the GPP for the LIVE BLOG or 2) Panther Pass is televising the game on-line.

If you're in FIU's home, stop by and say hello at the open-air press box on the east side of the stadium by the 5-yard line. If you're out of town, then follow along on here as we have reliable FIU wireless this week and not the wacky wireless of Dolphin Stadium....Let's kick this thing off....

I was right behind the guy dancing with the boxers lol that guy was hilarious!

Pete,

What's the story with Mike Dominguez? That guy is a warrior.

Next year we play UF, Alabama and USF. All 3 away. I hope those aren't the first 3 games.

Pete do you know the schedule for next year?

Paw/Claw man had us going at the FAU game he was really hyped and his chant after every score was fun to see.

As fans I think FIU has a long way to go as far tradition and spirit. Roary was doing way better yesterday, for a while it seems like he really couldn't draw any attention.

Our fan woes will subside as we fill out the W column. I would say that FIU has to its credit, a large international student population which may take a while to warm up to football. As I was parking on campus yesterday I saw a large group of what looked like students playing cricket, another group playing soccer. I will never say this is a bad thing but it does indicate football may not be as prominent a sport in the student body's mind.

Also our Greek Community seems weak or really isn't standing behind the team as they should. Paul is a FIJI and they come out to support him and I see a lot of PIKE representation but yesterday I saw a lot of people rocking their letters LEAVE when the game started as the tailgates closed down. So let me get this straight , you'll come to party but you won't come to support? Ok fine, we'll blame it on finals.

There are a lot of causes for the butts in seats shortage but as the product on the field improves, attendance will improve.

OUCH!

FAU is going bowling, and its not friendly territory. They'll be playing against Central Michigan at the Motor City Bowl in DETROIT Dec 26th at 8PM on a nationally televised game on ESPN. Obviously CMU will have a HUGE home field advantage as they are playing in their home state, they finished #2 in MAC, behind only BOISE STATE.

Regardless, good luck to FAU!!! You deserve to go bowling. If we wouldn't have BLOWN IT we would be up there instead.

Boise State plays in the WAC, not the MAC. You are thinking of Ball State.
But any...Thanks for kind words. By the looks of it, you guys will be going Bowling very shortly. Getting this bid was a shock. I certainly thought the Owls were on the outside of the bowl picture until about 4pm today.

As for CMU, they are good team(a lot like FAU actually...a lot of offense, not so much D), but they also lost their final 2 games. Should be a shootout. We'll try our best to do the conference proud.

mra,

The group I am with always always always cheers and makes noise for our guys and when we are on offense, we try to get people to stay quiet. I understand that sometimes fans just sit there on defense and cheer on offense, believe me, it drives me nuts. But don't say that no one cheers, because people do, and we try hard in making sure people get pumped to cheer. One of our friends is one the craziest FIU fans out there. He's kind of our leader when starting our defense chants. We sit in front of "Paw/Claw" guy and cheer along with him whenever he does the Paw/Claw. He's awesome. :)

Congratulations to all the players especially to all the Seniors. I'm glad there are some loyal fans at FIU I was expecting a lot less people yesterday. We need to make an incentive to our fans so that maybe we can actually have home advantage. I went to every game this season because even though I'm a freshman I'm extremely proud of FIU, but we need to do something about fans leaving the game. Can you believe that many fans left the game even though we we're winning by 24 points? FIU Athletics needs to come up with a better advertising technique/fan magnet.

Go Panthers!

Guys if u want to laugh go to panther pass and see the FIU WKU postgame pressconference...After interviewing TY and Gaitor, they left the camera rolling...You can then hear some funny conversations with people in the room lol...

Pete,

Is Ricky Booker injured, in the dog house or just not performed? I have not seen him play any significant time all season, he was heralded as a big time recruit.

Pete, I know you stated in your live game blog that the microphone was not working properly at half-time during Dr. Maidique's speech, however Pete I was there, something was definitely wrong with the President's speaking ability. If the microphone was defective, it would have been apparent when PG spoke, however he sounded perfect. It can't be that the microphone broke down only when Dr. Maidique spoke.

It sounded very disturbing, for someone so eloquent. Hope he is OK!

Pete, I was also there Sat during half-time with our group of alumni that get together for all home games, and I concur with FFFL, that DID NOT sound like a mic problem. Everyone in my area noticed and we kept looking at each other in an embarrassing / surprised way. AD Garcia sounded just fine; it was only when Mitch got on the mic that it sounded very troubling! I too hope MM is doing fine.

GO FIU!!!

I agree that the Greek community has to carry a lot of the weight on behalf of the fans. They usually have the most school spirit.

Pikes have several brothers on the football team and I know they do a good job getting out there. But more would be good from all greeks.

Solid season!! One more win would have been tremendous but heck of an improvement

How many SunBelt teams are going bowling?

... hey pete watching that panther pass post game interview.. the camera guy forgot to turn off the camera lol love hearing everyone shooting the breeze

Comment: While I wasn't in the stands the whole time Maidique spoke, my friends from the group I sit with were also kind of concerned if Mitch had a health problem with the way he was speaking. That was their impression, and asked me if I knew anything.....however, I would think if anything bad had happened to Mitch, it would have already transpired through the press...

FIUFP&L, me and my friends are the one's that sing the Mario Cristobal song. We'll try it again next year and see if anyone sings along.

Great job by the entire team this season, I am looking forward to seeing these guys play next year. Anyone going to Tuscaloosa?

Hello again to Pete and the Golden Panther family.
We need to unite and attack the attendence problem by educating the fans, but a plan must be developed soon.

On the Presidents speech/audio situation, I was close and noticed it was audio manipulation all the way. Some one needs to investigate.

CONGRATULATION TO THE ENTIRE GO-PA-WZz NATION !!!

Pete,

Would love to have MC on one of your interviews, anything set up yet?

Nice page on the Herald would be great!

Cote disses PP coverage of T.Y's accolades:

On Dec. 4th PP writes that T.Y. was named to Phil Steele's All-Conference Team, which prompts Cote to write today...FIU freshman star T.Y. Hilton was among Golden Panthers selected to the Phil Steele college football magazine's All-Sun Belt team. Which invites the question, ``Who the hell is Phil Steele!?''

Wow! why is he attacking PP's reporting or what???

Concerning Maidique's halftime speech...

I was listening on the radio transmission and it sounded very very troubling. When the president spoke, it sounded like he fumbled on words and frankly sounded like a sick person trying to speak clearly. Additionally, don't want to start a rumor mill here but I did run into his beautiful wife on the 'Pike a few weeks before his resignation announcement. She was in her gold Lexus LS (with the FIU1 tag) she was talking on the phone and looked very very concerned and franctic. Obviously it could've been anything else...but you start adding these things together and you gotta wonder.

I hope everything is ok, Pete we would welcome any health updates concerning our president who we all hold so dearly to our hearts.

over the radio mitch sounded like he was crying and choked up. hope he's all right.

Cote is the biggest jerk there is. He continually tries to find a way to attempt to be funny at the expense of FIU Athletics. I don't think it's anything against PP at all...it is just his anti-FIU fixation.....

Pete I noticed on ESPN that the only two sunbelt teams going bowling are Troy and FAU, why was LU and ASU dissed like that?
Also when are we going to hire Oliver Stone to do a movie on MM's health? I love the conspiracy theories.

FIU FPL... Dude in his boxers graduates next year, very cool kid, have him for a class and i was sitting a row beneath him. He's awesome, and they let him stay at the game. Won't say his name but i'll ask.

Dr. Maidique sounded bad too. I disagree a lot with the man's ideology but that's for elsewhere & he's done a lot for the school. Hopefully he's alright.

Hilton Heave baby.

I don't know Fanatic, sounds to me like he's saying to PP, 'how dare you dig up something positive about FIU, who the hell is this Phil Steele anyways'.

Why would he choose this bit of factual information to attck. My guess is he's just one more mouthpiece of the ucg propaganda machine.

I will be in Tuscaloosa!!!!

Better hope this kicking whiz doesn't change his mind, heard both freshman kickers on roster left.

Will the school be offering bus rides for the games at USF and UF? And how about the Alabama game? Will the school provide any sort of transportation for that game?

Great decision if your going to those games, the game will be over in the first quarter of those games.Guess you enjoy LOOOOONG bus rides.
