Safe Season Finale

Mm_2 Looks like the Golden Panthers will have both their starting safeties back for the season finale against Western Kentucky on Saturday at FIU Stadium.

Marshall McDuffie, left, (shoulder) practiced without a problem and without an orange non-contact jersey on Tuesday. Jeremiah Weatherspoon, right, (hamstring) also practiced some, but not the Jw_2 entire workout.

MC said MM would start on Saturday and JW "looks like he's ready to go."

Don't bother with the hindsight and the safeties, unless you have a DeLorean. The 2008 Shula Bowl is over, let's all move on. Time to finish 5-7.

Here is MC's take on the mood of the team regarding the FAU loss and Tuesday's practice:

Mc "We're angry. We're upset. We want to play football again. We would have liked to have played again and again right after the FAU game. We had things right in our grasp and we let it get away. It's a pain that I think is going to pay dividends in the long run with some of these young cats growing up and remembering the sounds of FAU celebrating in their locker room [FIU and FAU's locker rooms at Dolphin Stadium are about 15 feet apart]. They will remember that pain walking off the field  when that Shula Trophy could have come over to our side for the first time in a long time. It will pay off in the long run and right now it's a good pain that we feel and we'll be able to use it on Saturday against a dangerous Western Kentucky that should have beat FAU."

Coach - how is a 2-9 Western Kentucky team, who has only beat Eastern kentucky and Murray State dangerous? Are your players really buying that garbage. You should win, you know you should win. Are you just setting it up in case the guys don't perform to say - see, I told you they were dangerous?

I'm sorry, but a loss here would ruin an otherwise successful season (relativly speaking)

Beat WKU - Go FIU

TheU24/7,

MC is playing it safe, just like every coach. You never want to underestimate a team and get them hyped up trying to prove you wrong. I really believe any team can beat any team in Div 1-A these days. Just look at all the upsets we have seen in the last couple of years.

My prediction is
FIU 35
WKU 17

Nice words from Mario there. Hope the boys learn from that loss. They'll need to.

Wanted to address FIU Fan For Life and BB Panther from a couple of posts back about Rouco.

FIU Fan For Life: I came up with my blog name soon after finding out my father had cancer. Since you asked.

FIU has lost 19, 17 and 19 games the last 3 years. None of those numbers are greater than 20. Granted, not a hell of a lot of difference, but I thought I'd point that out.

I'm not saying we should give Rouco any more seasons. I'm not saying he should stay. I thought we'd see more out of this program after 5 years, though I do think SR's had an awfully large amount of bad luck when it comes to player injuries. Especially this year. But I also think 4-5 years is enough time to see results. If SR got fired after another bad season, I'd understand the move.

I'm just trying to pointing out that the man has a damn near impossible situation on his hands. Demanding that the man win when practically his entire starting 5 is out is totally crazy. FIU isn't that good. Hell, 99% of schools aren't that good. And, since FIU isn't a powerhouse basketball school to begin with, I'm not surprised we lost to a D-II squad. I'm not excusing it by any means, but I'm not surprised. I think a lot of D-I teams at FIU's level would have trouble against D-II's when they have the injury troubles FIU's had.

I want to see how this team responds to Rouco before calling for his head. If he can keep this team together through all these injuries, stay around .500 and then go on a solid run with Soto and Galindo leading the charge when they come back, I think he should stay.

And, for the record... trying to measure a college program by the amount of pro players they put out is just silly. FIU's had 2 guys be NBA regulars, more than most SBC schools. We've never been better than a middle-of-the-pack SBC team. Derek Fisher was a UALR guy, but I can't think of many other SBC teams with notable pros. How many pro players has Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee put out? And they're just the two best teams in the conference, usually. My point is, putting out pros isn't the job of college programs. It's to win games by recruiting the best guys you can. What they do afterwards isn't as important. Not to the school, anyway.

BB Panther: Son, brush up on your reading comprehension. Or get your eyes checked. I said Bob Knight would have a hard time winning without 4 of his starting 5. Almost any coach would. I wasn't comparing SR to him. Oh, and if you really want to see "horrendous", look at Donnie Marsh's teams. Say what you will about SR, but at least his teams have hope. Marsh's were the epitomy of horrendous. They would've been worse without SR's recruits, because other than Taurance Johnson, Marsh couldn't recruit worth a damn.

Clawing Cancer, most importantly about your name, sorry if I sounded sarcastic, however I just wanted to know why the unique name. Now that I know, my prayers are with your Dad!

The one thing we ALL share in this blog is our support for our FIU teams. So I'm frustrated with what seems like many promises and expectations from SR over the last couple of seasons. In his first couple of seasons he inherited Marsh's horrendous teams so he got a free pass. That pass has expired!

Wednesday night and the pain of the loss is still with me. DAMN!!! I hate losing to those guys!

I see where MC got some air play on local CBS news on his press conference today. Lets hope this attention continues to increase.

Men's hoop won tonight over FMU. We're now 4-4. Lets keep it going.

Pete, why does so much attention go to the UM player who is ACC Rookie of the year or something like that, yet no attention, except for your mention in the Herald about TY Hilton possibly being NCAA Freshman of the year?

GO FIU!!!

Great blog....Really...what clawing cancer just posted about the basketball program and Sergio Rouco, I agrew with it in its entirety. I mean....after this season...whatever happens, then make the decision. Losing 5 (yes, Freddy Asprilla...arguably our top recruit, is out as well...second game not playing tonight) of your top 6 players is not going to be easy for ANYBODY...to win. Of course, SR record has been pretty dismal, so in my book...this is his make or break season. Let him finish it...then, evaluate...I truly hope he can find enough luck to pull this team through.

Go FIU!!

FIU Fan For Life: I didn't think you were being sarcastic, actually. And thanks for the well wishes, but they come a bit late. Dad died two days before the football team played Kansas in the season opener. We buried Dad the day before the game (we Jews work fast) and I listened to the WIOD broadcast from my parents' apartment in Pembroke Pines, clearing out a lot of his stuff.

I know that might strike some people as weird, but it was pretty appropriate. Dad always liked FIU. He was an immigrant with not much formal education, but he was very much a self-educated type. He was hell-bent on all his sons getting college degrees. We used to live off 16th Street, and as a kid, I went on plenty of walks with Dad, and the FIU campus was one of our favorite spots. Especially the preserve.

He wasn't a fan of the FIU sports... he actually thought it was sort of silly for a university to field sports teams... but we sometimes would watch the FIU teams play, especially the men's tennis (when FIU still had it). He was a big tennis and soccer fan. I don't know if that's where me being an FIU fan started... I guess so.

Incidentally, Dad was also a big FC Barcelona fan, and to think that Barca could be a tenant at FIU with an MLS franchise would be sweet. I sure hope that happens.

OK, enough reminiscing. Nice to see Marlon Bright's back. I guess it's a good thing he didn't play last season thanks to the internship he had with Goldman Sachs. He'll definitely help out. And to think FIU has only FOUR scholarship players healthy right now... my God... if Rouco gets this team even close to an SBC title, he ought to be coach of the year.

Clawing Cancer, very sorry to hear about your Dad. My pops passed away one month ago Monday. My story is reversed. He was a Cincinnati Reds and Miami Dolphins fans and could care less about college sports, that is until my brother went to UF and went to FIU. My brother and I quickly turned him against the Canes (LOL!)! Since my brother could not take him to any UF sporting events, the job / pleasure of taking him to college sporting events (before FIU football) was all mine. I bought him season-tickets to FIU baseball. He and I would sit next to Mike Lowell's dad and cheer on those very good FIU baseball teams! Will never forget those times with the my old man!

Adding to your comments about SR and hoops team, yes it would be a miraculous achievement if with the rag-tag squad SR currently has, he makes them respectable. Remember GPP Nation even when our starters return, it takes time to get into the grove of the team. Where the infusion of returning talent from injuries will help it will take a couple of games to jell.

GO FIU!!!

Hey ClawingCancer, sorry about your dad. Seems like you and him were real close, and I am sure he is with you always.

Total 180 here, but I was talking with some of my friends who are student athletes today and they told me that FAU plays real dirty football. One of the football players (I think a linebacker) had bruises under his eyes from when an FAU O-lineman poked him hard in the eyes on multiple plays. I am all for getting into someone's head during a game, but to stoop to such low measures is really sad. I have just lost all respect for FAU players as of this morning...and they call FIU players thugs...go figure. I remember after the Troy game on ESPN, when the Troy quarterback had his season cut short when an FAU player purposefully went for his knees and tore his acl/mcl. After the play, Troy players said that the FAU player stood over the quarterback and laughed, saying that he hoped his season was over. When all is said and done, the dirty players will get their fill...What comes around goes around.

oops, sorry for double post...computer problems

Clawing Cancer & UFF sorry about both your losses. Important msg from both of you seems to be enjoy and take advantage of the time with your parents. We ALL need to remember that.

Just heard SR post game comments. Asprilla's achilles problem is NOT day-to-day but WEEK-to-WEEK! That is very unfortunate. After U. of Buffalo on the road, we play Georgetown and Miami w/o 5 key players! Unbelievable! Clawing Cancer I do not believe in a PG conspiracy, however I do know people close to the program and PG spends NO TIME with SR and staff, will make NO effort to communicate with them and usually ignores them. That silence is deafening! My opinion is the writing is on the wall for SR.

Pete what is the role of J. De Cespedes on the squad? Is he an assistant? Does he get paid? Isn't he heading to the slammer? Let us know.
