The official All-Sun Belt team was released this morning and T.Y. Hilton (left, thanks to Sam Lewis for all FIU pics) and DB Anthony Gaitor (right) were 1st team selections. Goodbye received multiple honors as the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year, 1st team kick returner and 1st team all-purpose. Goodbye also was named as 2nd team WR.
MC, however, did not win the Sun Belt Coach of the Year. Instead, Troy's Larry Blakeney, who always has his Trojans atop the SBC took the award. Sure thought going from 1-11 to 5-7 would merit a coach of the year honor, but guess not.
Other Golden Panthers honored on the All-Sun Belt teams were: C Brad Serini (left), DE Quentin
Newman and P Carlos Munera on the 2nd team; LB Scott Bryant (right) and QB Paul McCall were honorable mention.
Here's the All-Sun Belt 1st team: Player of the Year: Tyrell Fenroy (ULL, Sr., RB #32); Offensive Player of the Year: Michael
Desormeaux (ULL, Sr., QB, #6); Defensive Player of the Year: Alex Carrington (ASU, Jr., DE, #98); Newcomer of the Year: Levi Brown (Troy, Jr., QB, #12); Freshman of the Year: T.Y. Hilton (FIU, Fr., WR/KR/PR, #4); Coach of the Year: Larry Blakeney (Troy).
First Team All-Conference Offense: Michael Desormeaux (ULL, Sr., QB, #6); Reggie Arnold (ASU, Jr., RB, #2); Tyrell Fenroy (ULL, Sr., RB #32); Casey Fitzgerald (North Texas, Sr., WR, #87); Jerrel Jernigan (Troy, So., WR, #3); Zeek Zacharie (ULM, Sr., TE, #15); Matt Mandich (ASU, Sr., OL, #63); Brad Bustle (ULL, Jr., OL #75); Chris Fisher (ULL, Jr., OL #79); Chris Jamison (Troy, Sr., OT, #65); Dion Small (Troy, Sr., OT, #74).
First Team All-Conference Defense: Alex Carrington (ASU, Jr., DE, #98); Jervonte Jackson (FAU, R-Sr, DL, #92); Brandon Lang (Troy, Jr., DE, #91); Cameron Sheffield (Troy, Jr., DE, #90); Frantz Joseph (FAU, R-Sr., LB, #56); Cardia Jackson (ULM, Jr., LB, #51); Boris Lee (Troy, Jr., LB, #2); Corey Small (FAU, R-Sr., DB, #26); Anthony Gaitor (FIU, SO., DB, #7); Terence Moore (Troy, Sr., DB, #20); Sherrod Martin (Troy, Sr., DB, #6).
First Team All-Conference Specialists: Josh Arauco (ASU, Jr., K, #89); Truman Spencer (North Texas, Sr., P, #25); T.Y. Hilton (FIU, Fr., Return Specialist, #4); T.Y. Hilton (FIU, Fr., All Purpose, #4)

Congrats to T.Y. and to Gaitor on their 1st Team accolades, and to Serini, Newman, Munera,McCall, and Bryant on their respective honors.
While Blakeney is, aruguably, SBC's best and/or most consistent coach, the fact they didn't name Cristobal for this year's award is definitely a disappointment....
Oh well...Congrats to everyone involved!

So what does that mean, SBC team coach is coach of the year by default? Did Howard win last year?

I would tend to think it also means less "incentive" dollars to Mario, as most coaches' contracts would include that clause of being named "coach of the year", taking the team to Bowls, a set number of wins, maybe even attendance numbers, as part of the contract...

Poor coaching against ULM and the 4th Q debacle v. FAU cost him. COY's get more from their team than they should; allowing winnable games to slip by is cause for losing the COY honor. The only game where I feel we really overacheived was the ASU game. Getting blown out by ULL on the road, lack luster performance v. ULM and the aforementioned FAU lose where all serious underperformances.
Besides being 8-4, Troy shocked the country leading LSU, what 31-10, or something, with 7 minutes left in the 4th. Hopefully Troy, finishes the job and beats S. Miss to finish a healhty 9-4.
Sure FIU's turnaround was impressive but they left too much on the table as far as I'm concnerned. We'll get 'um next year.
Go Panthers !!!

Good points, FIUFan...

There is no way TY isn't WR Firts team... check the numbers! MC achievement was more impressive by far. Troy ended the same as last yer while FIU has made a turn around in an offseason! MC's job is much harder, he is coaching lesser talent, less mature players and was able to turn a horrible team around. Troy is an already good team and they didn't improve much from last year IMO.
TY on the otherhand flat out deserved the 1st Team WR spot. NT's Fitzgerald deserved the #1 spot, but please tell me how the hell Jernigan did better than TY???
TY HILTON: 41 rec, 1013 yards, 7TD's
Jernigan: 68 rec, 802 yards, 5TD's
TY wins in yards and TD's(the stats that count)and lets not forget TY's rushing and passing TD's out of the WR spot. No disrespect to Jernigan, the guy is good, but what FIU can claim in TY Troy cannot in Jernigan. TY Hilton ladies and gentlemen CARRIED our offense!!
Hardly any run support
The other WR's stepped up late in the season
He was double covered!
He was the player D's planned against!
saved us on many 3rd and longs
most of the season he was our only hope when our offense was cornered, te boy makes plays out of nothing!
He clearly deserved the recognition over Jernigan. Also would have been nice to see Robert Mitchell mentioned somewhere. He played well. Maybe im asking for too much HAHA!!

I'm with esteban, MC got hosed, but not as badly as TY. There is no way he is not 1st team wide receiver, no one in the Belt can claim what he has done, much less as a freshman.

I would have thoguht TY would get 1st team WR... i mean come on... o well he still got Return Honors and Gaitor Got First Team DB.. Congrats to Him as well..
Posted by: CJ | December 09, 2008 at 05:06 PM
i know... its good he still got the others, but man it bothers me when they do this "spread the honors" crap like if this was kindergarden or something. I don't care if TY or anyone else for that matter gets 1 or 100 honors, it dosn't justify anything! He was one top 2 recievers in the belt, are you going to punish him just because he is such a great returner and freshman.
Same thing. I never understood how the "player of the year" is different from one of the "Offensive/Defensive POY" if you think about it, it isn't logical. Tyrell Fenroy is POY but Michael Desormeaux is "O-POY". I guess the Sunbelt is into spreading the wealth. lol!
Its not a hude deal. Im just bothered when they do this. TY works hard for everything he does, he should get what he deserves.
Posted by: esteban688 | December 09, 2008 at 05:35 PM
I agree that TY should have definetly gotten 1st team WR honors... if you're the best in more than one field, you deserve to get rewarded for it.
Posted by: Joel | December 09, 2008 at 05:39 PM
Yeah, there's no reason for Jerrigan to be ranked over TY. That's a joke.
And no RM anywhere is pretty dissapointing, the guy led our team in tackles and was at least as important to us as Gaitor.
Congrats to all of the players that did get honored, and no worried about MC not getting it this year. He'll win plenty before long.
