Does that mean he wouldn't be eligible to play until January or misses the whole year? That's key info.

he just misses fall semester. If he fails to meet academic requirements in the fall semester he is ruled ineligible for the spring as well. big loss

As long as he is good to go in January we should be fine. Keep in mind there are still plenty of talented players on this team.
