Isiah, Wright and Frederick on FIU's win over Barry

Here's my game story from FIU's 69-54 victory over the Barry Buccaneers Monday.

Some quotes that didn't make the papaer ...

Isiah Thomas on his halftime message:

"I just told them to trust the things we believe in. We practice every day and need to get back to playing the way we practice. If we play the way that we practice, we can be a pretty good basketball team. But when we deviate from the things that we practice every day, then we’re not that good."

Thomas on Marvin Roberts:

"I was more impressed with his game than anybody’s game. He was really struggling offensively. He did not have a good offensive game going. But he found a way to contribute to the team. For a scorer to do that, that’s big. Most of the guys that score the basketball the way that Marvin likes to score, they don’t play the rest of the game. But I thought the way he rebounded the basketball, he ended up with eight rebounds tonight, those rebounds were very good."

Thomas on the team's poor shooting:

"You’re not going to shoot well every night. Some nights, you’re not going to shoot it well. The thing you can always do well is defend. When you’re not shooting it well, and you’re not having a good offensive game, your defense can always carry you. If your offense kicks in, then you’re able to pull away, and win the game by 15. For the most part, offense comes and goes. But the defense remains constant."

Eric Frederick on scoring in the post:

"I kept going down there, kept begging for the ball. My teammates were giving it to me. I did what I could. I kept on saying, ‘Come on, I need everybody. I can’t do it by myself.’ So DeJuan picked it up. Jeremy picked it up. Marv a little bit The whole team, Phil. That’s what we’re going to do the whole year. We can’t come out flat like that ever again.  If we would have lost to Barry, no disrespect, but I would have been upset."

DeJuan Wright why the team struggled early:

"We’ve got to come ready to play. I don’t think we really came ready to play today in the first half. Like Eric said, we can’t ever start a game like that again, especially against a team like Florida State. If we get down against Florida State, it’s going to be tough to climb the mountain. But if we play good defense, solid defense, we win the battle on the boards and we execute, we have a good chance of winning."
