Search for FIU's new defensive coordinator begins today

Sentimentality is a luxury not afforded to Division I football programs, so it should come as no surprise that interviews for FIU's replacement to newly departed D-coordinator Geoff Collins begin today.

Mario Cristobal plans to interview three candidates Thursday -- less than 24 hours after Collins took a job at Mississippi State -- and eight by this Sunday.

The program has not yet released a list of candidates, but we're working on it.

Cristobal mentioned the Golden Panthers would consider internal applicants, but with Collins gone, FIU's depth of defensive assistants has thinned.

Cedric Calhoun leads the defensive line, but has never been higher than a position coach at any level, and has only worked at the Division I-A level for one season. Juan Navarro (D-line/linebackers asst.) and Jeff Popovich (secondary) also might be a few years removed from such a job.

I would like to see Bob Shoop as the new DC at FIU.

Randy Shannon all the way!

no thanks on randy shannon . he ruined a lot of relationships with high school coaches and players

Random question: does hiring a coach from a nearby high school like St. Thomas Acquinas or Miami Central create any inroads for recruiting their kids later?

If so, I can't imagine these high schools having better salaries for a DC than FIU...but I am merely making the assumption so far.

What do you guys think?

@ FIU Fan
Honestly I don't really think it does much, because there are the power house teams that recruit there too, like FSU, UF, Ohio State, etc.
IMO I think the list might be short for FIU because they are a team from the Sun Belt. If I could I would lobby for the guy I mentioned earlier, DC Bob Shoop who has around 20 years of coaching experience.
