Money, money, money, money....

Bobby Petrino gets $850,000 a year base salary from Western Kentucky to replace Willie Taggart. Taggart got five years, $5.75 million from the University of South Florida. Obviously, the price of a coach with a good track record did what the price of cheese did in the past year.

What does that mean for FIU, who needs someone with a college head coaching track record to justify even partially the firing of Mario Cristobal?

I covered Butch Davis' financial situation in a previous post (never mind what he's told FIU). He's getting $590,000 from North Carolina each of the next three years. Whatever another school pays him to coach is subtracted from Carolina's end. If Davis does his friend Pete Garcia a solid, FIU can get Davis cheap and Davis still gets his $590,000.

Houston Nutt's not eating government cheese either after a $6 million buyout from Ole Miss. Randy Shannon got only one year into a new four-year deal when UM sacked him. He sued to get his money.

In other words, guys who don't necessarily need the money. Bobby Petrino got fired with cause by Arkansas and Western needed somebody to replace Taggart. USF ponied up to get Taggart to leave a place where he had been successful and ignore his other opportunities.

And Cristobal, who was making $453,183 as a base, isn't one of the final two at Temple, so that payoff savings isn't coming to FIU yet or via Philadelphia.

Trying to find out if it was any of the above available three -- or if it was someone else -- who met with Pete Garcia and Board of Trustees head Albert Maury on campus this week.

Panama City Bozeman defensive end Chandler Burkett got a visit from Maryland recently, but he's staying with his FIU commitment for now. From what I hear, current FIU players also are playing from the Wait-and-See playbook, although junior defensive tackle Isame Faciane did Tweet that he was considering transferring.

I hope you're kidding on some kids wanting to transfer. Strange that some may consider sitting out a year or even playing on a lower division. They should just wait for new head coach to be hired.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the info again.

Go Panthers!

If they don't want to be here, let them go.

Another day goes by, no announcent and the anxiety level climbs one more notch. I hope Pete has a plan. Thanks for the update DJN.

It's Butch. We all know it is Butch.

I hope your right, but for some reason I don't think its going to be Butch, Shannon or Nutt.. Even though all three would be amazing pick-up's, I think Garcia is going to lean on a young (unproven) assistant coach that he can push around for the next 4 years. Sorry to be the negative one but this is not a good start to C-USA play in a couple months from now..

Go Panthers!

Pete will not hire someone without HC experience. And he also wont hire Randy Shannon. At least, I hope he doesn't.

B U T C H D A V I S............done deal.

Anyone but Randy Shannon please.

Just wondering why not Randy? I thought he did an OK job at UM and a great job at Washignton.. Just wondering (even though i don't think it will be him)..

Go FIU

What the hell is up with B&GH? Seriously?

I'm team No-Randy also. I can only imagine the UM goons talking about how we picked up their scraps if he became our coach. On the flip side of that, I consider Randy to be a loyal guy and will not jump at the first opportunity like a Butch Davis would.

You don't want Randy because he's a bad head coach with no people skills. Treats the fans and media with outright hostility, absolute worst person to build a program around.

Butch Davis would be great for a year or two but he's not sticking around for a half million a year, FIU needs a long term solution.

Hire Cristobal back.

I am for hiring Cristobal back but that will be strain on that relationship. lol

Seriously, who else is out there? FIU can attract talent and this is a football town just need winners to bring us out. So, it boils down to money and we can't obviously offer million-dollar salaries.

Washington???? What did Randy Shannon do at Washington? Last I read he was a LB coach at TCU. I don't think Randy is the right person, or that Randy wants the job.

See my other post. You are missing e story that is under your nose. I spoke with a booster who was part of the Troy trip. He said that Garcia was boasting of his ability to trade up for a big-name coach such as Butch Davis. Many of us felt uncomfortable with this cocky, unexpected bashing of our head coach who built the program. Furthermore, Garcia made several negative statements about Cristobal wanting more than he deserved because it was Pete and his staff that built the stadium and program. This was awful. You need to write the true story. It is about an AD with a checkered past and big ego who wants total control of everything. Cristobal was a pawn in a program that had no intention of rewarding him. Just look at his extension numbers. They were insulting. Cristobal will find a new job easily. If Garcia is terminated, he has nowhere to go. Your reporting is weak and disappointing. Your colleagues break stories about UM football troubles. You are disconnected from the real FIU story.

Nick Walsh, what you have said is actually slander, you have accused the man of sexual harrasment and breaking NCAA rules. The only thing you have been able to say to justify this is that he wanted to get a better coach and the truth that Pete has gotten us the funding for the stadium, fieldhouse, and if you dont recall he actually got us into the last bowl game we did not deserve to be in. DJN your reporting is fine.

I hope you're kidding on some kids wanting to transfer. Strange that some may consider sitting out a year or even playing on a lower division. They should just wait for new head coach to be hired.

This is a "Job" that really doesn't pay you. You do it for the love of the game. We must have a coach we believe in and know will have your back in the end. Most importantly make you better in all aspects of the word. I am surprised more of them have not left FIU after the firing.
