Just another tricky day at La Cage

FIU coach Ron Turner said after two games starting sophomore quarterback E.J. Hilliard, he's going back to redshirt junior Jake Medlock for this week's game at Texas-El Paso.

When I asked Turner if the decision's different had other players not left 17 points on the field at Middle Tennessee State and it's still a game early in the second half, he said he made the decision on Hilliard's whole body of work. He was especially ticked that, according to him, the first three plays were scripted and Hilliard made mistakes on all three.

Medlock said he reacted to the first benching of his high school or college career with anger at himself for how he'd been playing. He specifically mentioned the Southern Mississippi safety, saying he should've kicked the ball out of the end zone instead of picking it up, trying to throw and getting knocked out of the game.

Fifth-year senior outside linebacker Derrick Jones Jr. was on crutches Wednesday. Expect Davison Colimon to start there.

For what it's worth...an observer who's at most of the big high school games in Dade and Broward County (that don't run simultaneously -- he's not from Cargg) said he's seen coaches from all the other FBS football schools in the state more than he's seen from FIU. In fact, he estimates seen former FIU offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, now at Marshall, as often or more often at games than current FIU coaches.

FIU's a six-point underdog.

At this point I'm numb & indifferent for FIU Athletics until changes are made! Yawn!!! How one acerbic AD can cause such a collapse of support AND keep his job. Actually, didn't he get a bonus in Oct? A bonus while the fan support is bled dry! What a gig he has.

I'm done with FIU.

All the pride the football gave has been flushed down the toilet thanks to Pete Garcia.

Fire his ass.

Again, as much we want to fire the AD and yes he's ultimately responsible for the person he hired. The performance and record of the football program is not on him directly. It is the responsibility of the coach and staff to get these kids prepared and ready to go on Saturday's. There is plenty of talent on this football team. Enough talent that if coached and put in the right situations on gameday could be very competitive in CUSA. DJN you quoted the QB as saying he should have kicked the ball out of the end zone so that he would not have been knocked out of the game? Yes, that would have been a good idea at the time, but it didn't happen, Elite QBs don't have to think about much on game day, they are instinctive.

Sounds to me as an excuse for being benched. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, blame someone or something else for your failure. "QB & Coach" the two so-called leaders. Granted the backup may have made some mistakes, However from lookin at the stats Medlock did not do much better entering midway of the 3rd quarter. Certainly not enough to be handed the keys again.

Isn't it ironic that our coaches record of 1-8 is the same as the team he just left? "Things that make you go hummmm!" and the QB that he was responsible for is currently lost and confused?

There is no way that FIU should have been outscored last Saturday 48-0, after actually playing ECU closer than the score actually dictated. A much lesser opponent with M/T. Just from looking at the play by play stats, "Poor Gameplan"

Hope these players can stay motivated for last three games.

Thanks for the update DJN. Have a blessed day! GO FIU

I am sure the 30 run plays were scripted also, and what did they get us? 91 yards. Can we bench the coach? lol Funny stuff!

I'm asking for Garcia's exit b/c of Coach Turner. I have a BOOK as big as "War & Peace" of reasons why Garcia needs to be gone & HOPEFULLY SOON!

Nobody should be surprised at the no show of FIU staff on the recruiting front. Some on this staff are not going to be here. FIUBLUE, you are correct, there is talent on this team and with no clue what direction we are headed on any given day...well you see the results. This is dis function at its finest. What I feel is a surprise is with the experience Turner has, he's as lost as a ball in high weeds. Will anyone cut him, the AD or the weeds?

Q: How much is this coach staff actively recruiting South Florida?

"an observer who's at most of the big high school games in Dade and Broward County (that don't run simultaneously -- he's not from Cargg) said he's seen coaches from all the other FBS football schools in the state more than he's seen from FIU"

A: They are not!

Q: How much is the staff thinking out of the box?

"FIU coach Ron Turner said after two games starting sophomore quarterback E.J. Hilliard, he's going back to redshirt junior Jake Medlock for this week's game at Texas-El Paso."

A: They are not!

Q: How much does this Head Coach make?

A: $500,000!

Enough Said!

This is ridiculous!!! I have owned and gone to almost every home game since the programs first game and season. I thought I would never say this, I want Strock back ASAP. Sure, he wasn't the best coach (I'm being kind), but he at least gave the kids a chance to win and his name in Miami meant something positive. This new coach continuously places the kids in losing situations; the kids never have a chance to win. When he gave his sons a job at the school, I knew we were doomed. This guy doesn't know how to coach, he knows only to help his friends and family, irrelevant to how the program does. For the first-time ever, i am embarrassed to be an FIU football fan, needless to say, the worth of my degrees continues to diminish, at least until we can put a product on the field that people take seriously. The president should be fired if he doesn't fix this situation, our school and alumna's reputation is at stake. We are the butt of jokes and continue to be humiliated by this want-to-be coach.

Lastly, Hillard is by far a better quarterback than Medlock. Medlock is terrible as a quarterback, but he can sure punt. If you have seen Hillard play, you can easily see, he should be the leader of the team, he knows how to play, unfortunately he is being coach by a moron.

Beginning at the next home game, I will begin to boo Turner at ever chance I get. And considering I will probably be the only one there in the stands, he will hear me. And don't let Pete onto the field, I will boo him even louder, that guy is truly an idiot.

Great coaching decision. Considering the number of games Medlock has won for FIU in the past two seasons, he's clearly the winning choice.

Turner will be gone after this season, David. You know it. He is pursuing NFL assistant jobs. He is not recruiting. His assistants have been called off the road several times. The writing is on the wall. How will Garcia and spin this one in a few weeks? "The football program is going to move in another direction. We are disappointed with the outcome of this year, but we wish Ron Turner well in his future pursuits. We have started a search for a new head coach whose ties to the South Florida football community will enable us to field a competitive team."
