Yep, We're the Worst

MetrorailCongratulations, South Florida!

Forbes Magazine recently did a story calling our fair part of the world the worst American city to live in as a sports fan. San Diego is second, Indianapolis third.

The Forbes study is based on winning percentage of the pro teams in the area (the Canes' 5-7 season wasn't even included) compared to the price of tickets to see those teams.

Based on winning percentages alone, last year was rough. According to Forbes, South Florida's aggregate winning percentage of .400 was ranked 27th of the 29 major metro areas in this report (there was a major city whose pro teams were worse that ours last year? Where?)

To make matters worse, South Florida is paying a pretty penny to see such mediocrity in person, the average price for a family of four to see a game down here close to $300. Hey, it's their math, not mine.

Of course, there's always next year. I'm betting our combined winning percentage will be better next season (can the Dolphins go 1-15 again? The Heat can't be as crummy as they were last year, can they? Doubt it.) As far as the expensive tickets go, well, I don't see that changing very much. Maybe next year we'll only be No. 2. Or three. Whatever.

We're gunning for you San Diego!

And remember: Stay classy, San Diego.

THIS NEVER WAS A SPORTS TOWN--IT'S A TOURIST MECCA. THE FACT THAT OUR TEAMS SUCK IS MORE TO DO WITH OWNERS THAN FANS. THEY KILLED THE OB, MOVED THE TEAMS NORTH, USE US TO BUILD THEIR STADIUMS, AND CHARGE UP THE YAZOO. THEY WANT LOYALTY?

FORGET ABOUT IT.

totally agree Carlos.
now please stop using all caps?

That list is bupkiss. But lets see...

We have an above-average baseball team with subpar atendance probably related to a stadium.

We have an excellent basketball team coming off a bad year but they still pack the house.

We have an up and coming football team with healthy attendance...

Miami won't be in the cellar for laonhg

I'm not surprized.
I've lived here for over 20 years and I can't back any of these teams.
The owners all suck, they don't spend to improve their teams then they complain about other more expensive teams.
The fans here are among the most ignorant.
During the Marlins world series run all these "fans come out like roaches. Ask them to name 5 players on the team and they can't. Typical!!!

the hurricanes blow!
get it?...Idiots.

I arrived here from Cuba in 1965,saw all the playoff of the MIAMI DOLPHINS 72 Season. I consider, Don Shula As a GOD!It is truly sad that we don't have a true sports town anymore.....

Another Good Reason NOT to build a taxpayer Subsidized Stadium for the Marlins! This report ought to sink that loser of deal once and for all!

Speaking for the Miami Cuban Exile Community~

Attending a professional sports event here is a very high cost activity, in a very low income city. No wonder the teams have no loyalty. And season tickets are out of reach of 95% of the population, so no way to build real loyalty there. I grew up near Houston and in the 1980s middle class people could actually afford to attend pro games, and did so even when the teams were in the dumps. ANd the domed stadium, first in the nation, didn't hurt either (like Miami, Houston is hot and humid and rainy much of the year).

Case in point: When the Marlins were going to play their first Series game in 2003, the first lady in line to buy tickets was asked how many games it would take for the Fish to win the Series. She first replied "one". The reporter laughed and said "it will take more than that, I'm afraid". She then replied "two", then "three", then finally "four". This is PROOF that the fans come out only for the glory.

Baseball, football, etc. is no longer a sport but a private multi-million business. That's why we should not waste any of our taxes in a stadium. gas is too expensive, the cost for a game is out of this world, and the weather too hot. I can sit at home with my A/C and watch games with my family.

Robin Da Hood = Sport owners + politics
Subsidize Sports = Mo-Taxes + less services
Yes + stadium = No mony - teachers
No mony for living = ball game on credit ?
Welfare ?? = For WHO ???
Rome fell = Miami too ???
Honest Sherriff ? = I see what you say !!
Roosting Chickens = Todays Economy + society
Solution = Let my people "go" ?!!!!!

Don Shula had the greatest quarterback in the NFL for (13 yrs) and couldn't get him a running back, not one! The easiest position in football to fill. Their all over the place coming out of college. Some teams have too many! Ask Denver. But no, Don couldn't find one to help Marino for 13 yrs.

They are dead on. SoFla is the worst sports town. We barely sell out the Dolphins, our #1 draw. The Panthers haven't made the playoffs in 8 years and center ice, lower bowl tickets are anywhere from 75-100 bucks. No one goes to those games except opponents' fans either!
