Here, in a nutshell, is what happened:

Florida never held the lead in this game and came back to tie the score three different times, the final time coming when David Booth scored with 2:21 left.

After a scoreless overtime, one in which Tomas Vokoun made five of his 52 saves, the Panthers went 2-for-2 in the shootout with Chicago getting one shot past in three attempts.

Ville Koistinen was the homeland hero and first star of the game; Koistinen, playing on the fourth line, scored Florida's second goal to make it 2-2. He also scored on the second shootout shot. Steve Reinprecht got the first one. Jonathan Toews scored in the shootout for the Blackhawks.

Scoring for Florida -- Goals: Michael Frolik, Koistinen, Booth and Koistinen gets credit for the game-winner. Assists: Reinprecht, Dennis Seidenberg, Cory Stillman, Frolik.

Tomas Vokoun made 52 saves and Pete DeBoer says he goes again tomorrow.

More later.

-- Patrick Kane gives CHI a 1-0 lead @ 5:19 of the second; Michael Frolik ties it @ 13:01...

-- Chicago takes lead in third off goal from Dustin Byfuglien off rebound @ 3:52...

But Ville Koistinen gets a loud cheer from the Finnish crowd when he pops one in from the right circle @ 7:29 to tie 'er up. It's a new ballgame folks...

And Patrick Sharp unties it, giving Chicago the lead back at 11:36 of the third...under six minutes left...

David Booth ties the score again with 2:21 left in the third period with a great shot from the left circle...almost at the one minute mark now...

Go Panthers!!!

GO PANTHERS GO! Glad to see the flu-ridden players are toughing it out for the first game of the season.

this is it folks . . . let another season of panthers hockey BEGIN!!!

Game on!!!

I saw Weiss is playing. That kid has some steel huevos b/c he looked like hell yesterday.

Horton looked like the worst player on the ice today. If he is not sick, what is his excuse for not back checking hard, making weak passes, sending the puck around the boards to no one, failing to bury a goal after a stellar pass from Booth to the doorstep, never moving his feet when gathering the puck, failing to use his large frame to protect the puck, etc. etc.? It was hard to tell today who was ill and who was just playing bad/lazy.

Nonetheless, GREAT WIN. The Campbell/Olesz/Dvorak (C.O.D. - Cash on Delivery) line dominated the 1st period and showed good play throughout the game, but just could not score.

#1 Star - Koistinen (money in the shootout and a big 4-on-4 goal)
#2 Star - Booth (was doing a lot to drive the puck up ice and unassisted goal was a thing of beauty)
#3 Star - Frolik (great move on his goal and assisted on Koistinen's tally)
