FLASH SITS: Horachek Benches Fleischmann During Slump

TWITTER: @GeorgeRichards

TORONTO -- For the first time since joining the Panthers in 2011, Tomas Flesichmann missed a game for something other than the flu as Horachek made him a healthy scratch.

"It looks like his enthusiasm .-.-. he doesn't have the drive right now,'' coach Peter Horachek said. "He needs to pick it back up and get his game back. He's a talented player, a good player.''

Fleischmann led the Panthers in scoring the past two seasons but has slumped this year. Fleischmann, who is fourth on the team this year with 23 points, hasn't scored a goal in his past 18 games. He has five assists during that span.

"I didn't expect it,'' said Fleischmann, who watched the second half of Thursday's game from the press gondola atop the arena.

"I always try to do what I can to help the team win, but it didn’t work last game. .-.-. Obviously, I’m supposed to score goals.’’

Jimmy Hayes was scratched for the third time in five games and Erik Gudbranson sat for his third straight game.

At age 29 a player shouldn't be named 'talented player' anymore. Will be a tough sale for Tallon to get a good trade deal for someone his age and lack of scoring.

Tomas Fleischmann is Jewish right? This reeks of antisemitism and I hope the Jewish Defamation League gets involved!

Before his benching, I have seen Gudbranson lose 2 pucks in his skates near the crease. One resulted on a goal against. It's clear that the "cage" was the issue on both. He also hasn't been as physical since returning. He's back playing a couple weeks after surgery to repair an orbital fracture, he's wearing the cage and he's getting benched for, understandably, having some blind spots and, understandably, not being quite his physical self. Plus, Florida gets blown out in the last two games they played, WITHOUT Gudbranson in the lineup. Florida is still better with him on the ice. Horachek is making a mistake by benching Gudbranson.

For the record, I do not believe that Horachek is long for the NHL as a head coach. I'll give him his due respect because the team has been better with him than before he took over. But, I don't believe he can keep the attention of NHL players for any real length of time.

An inexperienced head coach need experienced asst coaches on the bench, which he doesn't have. Impossible task.

That's a good point Hank. Regardless, I'll stick with my comment. Good assistant, good minor league coach. Not an effective NHL HC for any length of time. But, if they remove the interim tag and he's behind the bench next season, I'll be hoping I'm wrong. ;-)
