Florida State is a Basketball School?

20121012_193752

Maybe the Mayans were on to something and these really are end-times, Duke has the same football record as Florida State and the Seminoles packed their gym last night for the team's first basketball practice.

What?

Last night thousands of people packed into the Leon County Civic Center to watch Seminole Madness, the team's opening practice/expo for the 2012-13 season. Florida State enters the year the defending ACC champs and if last night was any indication, they are still riding high on the win.

The Seminoles entered the arena in Corvettes to pyrotechnics and jumbotron introductions, the loudest ovations were reserved for Leonard Hamilton and Michael Snaer. After the intro, the team took part in a three-point competition, a 12-minute inter-squad scrimmage and finally a dunk contest.

Florida State fans didn't go home disappointed either. It was just the first practice of the year but fans got a glimpse of a much more athletic, offensively potent team than it has seen it years.

It was just a practice, so most of it's meaningless, but Okaro White looked unreal last night and after a big offseason in which he admittedly spent more time in the gym than in his previous to years combined, White could be looking at a breakout dunk. Okaro told me a couple weeks ago he's faster, quicker and a lot smoother on the handle. He knows he's not going to be the most physical guy on the floor, so he'll attack bigger defenders with his speed and athleticism.

It looked pretty good last night as White won both the three-point contest and the dunk competition. Like I said, take it with a grain of salt, but overall last night was a resounding success for FSU.

Basketball is now back practicing and the first exhibition game of the season is at the end of the month.

Scroll down for a couple of videos from the dunk contest.
