It's official: Mattison to the Baltimore Ravens

GAINESVILLE -- Florida co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison accepted a position with the Baltimore Ravens' today.

The move was expected after the Gators' hired assistant Dan McCarney away from the University of South Florida on Thursday. McCarney and Mattison both coach the defensive line.

This is the second time the Ravens have tried to hire Mattison away from the Gators. Mattison, who began coaching in 1971, has never coached professional football. He will coach linebackers for Balimore and new head coach John Harbaugh.

Harbaugh and Mattison have been friends for nearly 25 years. Mattison was the defensive coordinator for Western Michigan in the 1980s while John was the linebackers coach. John's father, Jack, was the head coach.

Mattison, one of Florida coach Urban Meyer's best friends, is the third assistant coach to leave the Gators' staff this offseason.

So we still have to fill 2 coaches positions. I hope Meyer can do a good job recruiting coaches as he can recruiting high school players.

Losing three assistant coaches is never a good thing. I hope the Gators can find some quality assistants to fill the losses.
