REPORT CARD: Gators grade out at 96.25 percent

GAINESVILLE -- Before we break down the report card from UF 49, UGA 10 and hand out percentages Urban-Meyer style, let's give out Player of the Game awards.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME
UF junior quarterback Tim Tebow earns Gator Clause's offensive player of the game award after accounting for five touchdowns, including three rushing touchdowns. Tebow's eight-yard run on a sprained ankle gave UF a 35-3 lead with 3:29 left in the third quarter. Tebow completed 10-of-13 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Tebow's 44-yard pass to Louis Murphy gave UF a 28-3 lead. The 25-yard touchdown throw to a wide-open Percy Harvin was a great play call. Tebow also rushed for 39 yards on 12 carries.

Is Tebow back in the Heisman Trophy discussion? Hope so. I always enjoy a free trip to New York.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME
UF sophomore cornerback Joe Haden's interception and 88-yard interception return was the play of the game. It led to Tebow's one-yard touchdown run with 7:51 left in the third quarter and tipped the game's momentum to the Gators. Haden was named the defensive player of the week by the Southeastern Conference. In addition to the interception, Haden led the Gators in tackles with 10 and also broke up a pass.

Is Haden an All-American candidate? Haden is second on the team with 50 tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE GAME
UF sophomore punter Chas Henry placed 3-of-4 punts inside the 20. He averaged 40 yards per punt, including a 54-yarder.

QUARTERBACKS 97 percent
Subtract three points for UF quarterback Tim Tebow's poor pass in the first half, which would have been a UGA interception had the play not been nullified by a UGA penalty. Tebow managed the game well. UF back-up quarterback John Brantley entered the game in the fourth quarter and looked impressive. He completed 3-of-4 passes for 34 yards.

RUNNING BACKS 89 percent
Georgia held UF running backs Chris Rainey and Jeffery Demps to 30 yards combined on 13 carries. Redshirt sophomore running back Emmanuel Moody entered the game in the fourth quarter and rushed for a game-high 71 yards on seven carries.

Did Moody earn more carries for his performance against UGA?

RECEIVERS 96 percent
UF junior Percy Harvin receiver had 91 all-purpose yards, including 52 yards receiving on three receptions. He also rushed for 39 yards on four carries. He rushed for a touchdown and caught another. UF senior receiver Louis Murphy only had one catch but it was an important one, a 44-yard touchdown.

OFFENSIVE LINE 95 percent
The Gators' scatbacks never broke a long run but the offensive line allowed just one sack. In 2007, Georgia sacked Tebow six times.

PLAY CALLING 98 percent
Sometimes playing conservatively is the best call, especially when Georgia's offense is self-destructing. Subtract two points for the late-game timeouts.

DEFENSIVE LINE 99 percent
UGA running back Knowshon Moreno was held to 65 yards on 17 carries. Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford was never given time in the pocket and he tossed three interceptions.

LINEBACKERS 98 percent
UF junior linebacker Brandon Spikes got things going early with a big open-field tackle on Moreno. Dustin Doe played inspired football, deflecting two passes on back-to-back plays and later intercepting Stafford.

SECONDARY 98 percent
Cornerback Joe Haden's interception changed the game and safety Ahmad Black's interception started the celebration. Georgia exploited the Gators' secondary in 2007 but in 2008 UF returned the favor.

Fair breakdown. That is the second consecutive game in which Tebow through an ill-advised pass early in the game when he obviously should not have. He's obviously made up for it throughout, however.

Say what Coke? Don't lump me in with that bunch cause I'm not that bunch. I care about UF's schedule and what they are doing. I don't give a flip about UM. Go have a beer with that psycho 9ships. Or are YOU him? whatever dude. Get lost.

canes be good. we have a good foosball team. we grade out at 1000 percent. we have freshman that when we win they are going to win it all next year and when we lose they be bad and they be young. i want obama to win so i can get free gas and free mortgage payments. this way i can afford ESPNU and watch all the canes games. i like jacory. he has sexy legs. i would like to cuddle with him.

Honestly this s h i t is getting out of hand.

HEY ADAM S. (THE S IS FOR SKINHEAD)

SINCE YOU LIKE TALKING ABOUT MURDER,

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OBAMA MURDERING MCAIN'S ASS, BEEEYATCH?!!!

NOW THAT OBAMA IS THE NEW PRESIDENT MANY OF YOU SO-CALLED REPUBLICANS CAN UPGRADE FROM SINGLE-WIDE TO DOUBLE WIDE!!!

Um...I voted for Obama and my favorite music is rap & hip-hop. You're a moron. Let's stick to Gators (or in this case, Gators-Canes) rather than false name-calling and you being a complete prick.

Thanks.

NOW THAT OBAMA IS THE NEW PRESIDENT MANY OF YOU SO-CALLED REPUBLICANS CAN UPGRADE FROM SINGLE-WIDE TO DOUBLE WIDE!!!

"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery"

Hadens return was certainly a huge play in the game. It must have been demoralizing to watch for UGAG. But to me, Spikes pancaking of Knowshow on the second play of the game was HUGE. Knowshow ran over Uf last year. This year he had a shimmying BS on top of him all up in his earhole on the second play of the game. It was filthy. I loved it. I'm convinced that that play set the tone for the game.

Football Talk 101
Question to you Gator fans:

I was watching the Florida vs Georgia game (taped)and couldn't figure out why the Gator's offense is so proficient and hard to stop?

There is really no running game?
There is no power running game?
They don't pass the rock near as much as last year?
They run fewer trick plays?

I know why the other teams can't score, the D is a beast!

If the Gators get behind by 14-21 points do you think they have the offense to come back?

I was just imagining a Florida vs Texas BCS title game and thinking how good it could be.

Let's all drop the smack and stick to football!

I agree with Txcane... The Gators are different this year, we don't have trick plays or 500 formations, we haven't thrown the ball much in the first half, but we play hard and have a ton of speed. From what I've seen so far the only open it up in the big games. Forget the national championship the UF / Bama game will be a war!

Great points, TXCane. Adding to your post, UF quarterback Tim Tebow has never led a comeback win. He played great in the fourth quarter against Ole Miss but couldn't get it done on fourth-and-1. What happens when the offense isn't given great field position? What happens when Jeff Demps doesn't block a punt? What happens when Alabama jumps out to a 14-0 lead in Atlanta?

For what it's worth, I do think the Gators' offense has the ability to come back. It should be interesting to see how UF's coaching staff works Emmanuel Moody back into the game plan. I blogged earlier this week that Moody could be an important key to an SEC title. Some guys on the beat don't think the Gators need Moody. I do.

Have you heard any updates on Tebow's sprained foot?

Also, the two games I see us needed Moody is South Carolina and FSU. Those are two tough defenses and we need to get physical by pounding the ball at them, especially if the game gets close and we need to control the clock

TXCane, the Gators do have a power running game. The runner is Tebow. Is it a 230lb running back? No, it is a 240lb QB that runs like a bruising back. It is an unorthodox power run game but the Gators do have one. As far as passing the football, the Gators haven't had to air it out yet. Outside of the Ole Miss game, the defense has been playing lights out and the offense hasn't had to air it out.

With the defense playing excellent and the special teams giving the offense great field position, why take chances. Stay conservative yet agressive enought to score TDs.

MV,

Tebow's foot/ankle is fine, according to UF. He spoke with reporters after practice yesterday and wasn't limping and wasn't wearing a boot. As Meyer would say, "Tebow is good to go."

-jo-

On the other hand, has Alabama faced a defense like UF's? I find it hard to see any team putting a big lead on UF as the stats say otherwise. Does an Alabama team that finished at 7-6(4-4 SEC) make it to the BCS championship game the next year?

Although UA looks very good in many statistical categories, UF looks even better. Most notably, UF dominates in the red zone on both sides of the ball and Bammy is middle of the pack on RZ defense. UF's amazing turnover ratio is also an enormous stat. Alabama does have excellent rushing but florida is #2 right on their heels. You can pour over these stats yourself on this link:

http://secsports.com/new/sports/fbc/08stats/confldrs.htm

Great post, 13-1.

Where is the hype for the Vandy game? The line is at 23.5, just like Ole Miss. We haven't won big in Nashville the last few times, so I hope we can continue our hot streak and maintain our scoring average.

Yeah the Gators dont have a running game. If the Gators dont have one what do the Canes have???? This with SOOOOO many great NFL backs like Cooper and James look where they rank nationally. Also, please note that the Gators have played a MUCH TOUGHER schedule than the Canes.

Gators Rushing Offense #24 in the Nation
Canes Rushing Offense #71 in the Nation

Do you want to go to total offense?????
I dont think so.

Jo,

you need to be sitting on campus with some binoculars because Cam Newton is hurt with a neck brace and you missed it.

got a new one for U...

CHAMPION MUSIC FOR CHAMPIONS!!

TXCane,

Here you will find the answers to your dumb questions.

There is really no running game?

Gators - 24th and 195 yards/game
Canes - 71st 135 yards/game

There is no power running game?

Tim Tebow has been described by many as a "freak of nature" and the best "short-yard" back in the Nation because they know what is coming; they set the defense to stop him and Tim Tebow still gets it done. And by the way, he's been doing it since his freshman season.

They don't pass the rock near as much as last year?

Tim Tebow has a 162 quarterback rating which places him in 10th place overall. Florida's ratio of 16 TDs to 2 Int is the best in the Nation. On the other hand the Canes' 15 TDs to 13 Ints is one of the worst.

Here is a little extra for you. The Canes’ QBs are looking up to Tim Tebow in every aspect.
Marve - 7 TDs / 10 Ints / 103.3 QB Rating.
Harris - 7 TDs / 3 Ints / 126.3 QB Rating.

Marve’s 7 TDs/ 10 Ints in nine games vs Tebow’s career 51 TDs / 9 Ints, not even close. Marve has already more Ints than Superman. Amazing!

They run fewer trick plays?
They do not need to. Trick plays are usually design to catch the other team off guard when your team is having trouble moving the ball. The Gators can move the ball on offense and can score, boy can they score.

Scoring - Florida Gators 43 (5th) - Hurricanes 30 (38th).

The Gators have faced in 8 games 5 top 30 defenses; the Canes have faced 2 in 9 games and one of them is Florida State which is ranked 5th but they’ve played a really soft schedule up to now.

"If the Gators get behind by 14-21 points do you think they have the offense to come back?" TXCane, the answer is found above.

TXCane and all of you Gator haters, look at Florida's roster for next year. If you think Florida is good this year watch out for 2009 and 2010.

how could that be????

the canes are the only young team in the nation.

the rest of you guys are old like schnellenberger old.

Newton was in a minor car accident on Tuesday and the neck brace is cautionary, according to UF. He is still traveling with the team.

UFFator1972,

Here you will find the answers to your dumb questions?

Dumb Question?? ESPN has talked about this same issue!

Did you read my post??? I'm not talking smack I'm praising the gators, and all you want to do is talk crap about Miami.I never compared them to Miami. And you wonder why Miami fans want to talk crap back? But I'm not going to.

My Question,

I couldn't figure out why the Gator's offense was so proficient and hard to stop?
Maybe you don't know what proficient and hard to stop means? That is not smack talk or comparing them to Miami.

There is really no running game?
Gators - 24th and 195 yards/game

Yes, the Gators do rank 24th but they have no RB in the top 100. That is unusual for a team that ranks as high as Florida. Most of their yerds come from the QB position, which to me shouldn't be that hard to stop but for some reason Florida has created an advantage with it.

They run fewer trick plays? Fewer, that is a good sign.

Maybe next time you will actually read my post before you talk crap, I was congratulating the Gators and all you want to do is talk crap. I did not compare them to Miami nor would I, the Gator at this time are a much better team.

Again, I'm not going to insult your insults and I'm going to refrain from talking smack and wishing you and the Gators good luck from the State of Florida!

There is no power running game?

Jo, can you tell me why Cam Newton is not playing at all - even in "mop up" duty? Is he hurt or now relegated to 3rd team/scout duty?

GatorBud,

All of Cam Newton's mysterious injuries leads me to believe that he is headed for a medical redshirt. The guy has apparently had an injured ankle all season but that didn't stop him from jumping up and down and celebrating after the Georgia win. He was in a neck brace on Wednesday because he was apparently injured in a fender bender. He is, however, traveling with the team to Vanderbilt.

TXCane,
This what you wrote.
Football Talk 101

There is really no running game?
There is no power running game?

They run fewer trick plays?
That is what you wrote, right? It looks to me that you are questioning how a team that lacks a running game, has no power running, does not pass as much as last year and uses few trick plays can score as many points as the Gators do.
That, my antagonistic Cane fan, does not sound to me as praising the Gators. You seem to be questioning the ability of a team lacking talent to score at will.
You mentioned that the Gators do not have any runners in the top 100, couldn’t it be that they use an arsenal of runners.

Runner
Carries/Yards/Average

Jeffrey Demps
37/376/10.2

Chris Rainey
55/333/6.1

Tim Tebow
94/266/2.8

Percy Harvin
35/249/7.1

Emmanuel Moody
21/144/6.9

Kestahn Moore
23/92/4.0

Brandon James
11/52/4.7

As you can see your statement that most of their yardage comes from the QB position is wrong. Tebow has the most carries because he is used as a short-yardage power runner. Besides, TXCane, you shouldn’t be worried too much on how to stop him because Defensive Coordinators are still trying to figure it out and they haven’t.
You also said “Maybe next time you will actually read my post before you talk crap…” That is a typical TXCane statement. How can I answer your questions without first reading your crap.
