UF making recruiting inroads at Miami Northwestern
The University of Miami's recruiting stranglehold might be slipping at Miami Northwestern.
Gator Clause spoke with the father of Miami Northwestern junior running back Corvin Lamb on Tuesday and he indicated that his son is leaning towards committing to the Florida Gators. What's more, Lamb also said that several Miami Northwestern juniors would like to play together in college and a few of them are favoring Florida over Miami.
"I believe this class here at Northwestern will change the trend," Lamb, Sr. said when asked about UM's success recruiting The West. "My son has some friends that all want to play football together. A lot of them are not leaning towards the University of Miami. They are leaning toward Florida."
Florida hasn't landed a recruit from Miami-Dade County since 2005.

That's all talk from a bunch of JR's just messing with Florida. The only players from Miami that will go to Florida are player the U doesn't need.

Jo-
Corvin Lamb could be the most overated player EVER. he has done nothing during his HS career to warrant all the attention he gets.

What a rediculous statement!! RB's will not be a priority next year at Miami if this years class is signed as projected!
This blog is a joke! You have had 3 post in 3 hours and all of them are from 'cane fans!
By the way Gibby, "The Curse of Kehoe's Steamer" is wandering around our blogs again wearing nothing but his bathrobe and slippers! The guy sure drools a lot, must be the dementia!
P.S. Thanks for the Seminole duo!!

Of course canes fans, if they sign with us, you didn't want them. Spin it however you like, but there's a new sheriff in town, and his name is Urban Meyer. Enjoy wallowing in ACC mediocrity.

buddy do you understand what running backs we will have nxt yr with bryce brown lamar miller and mike james and they will all be freshman i don't thiink running back will be a high priority at miami for the nxt yr or so plus we do have 2 DL commitied to the U also the qb bridgewater and their top w/r one of the best in FLA talked bout miami being a tough to pass up not to mention we have an o-lineman at miami northwestern that talks bout being a cane don't believe the hype just yet because we have a full yr to see were these kids land kids decommit all the time the same yr they plan on attending the school so miami may not have those kids just like UF may not have the kids just named UF should know you didn't greg reid decommit so its written in stone these kids make their mind up plain and simple until that letter of intent is signed they are willing to say what ever they want

Hey Jo -
How strong do you feel Andre Debose is with his UF committment? Im obviously a canes fan, but I wanted a fan of UF to give me their opinion. He didn't look to happy to be leaving his 2 best friends to go to UF. I have a feeling he may pull a Ramon Buchanon and choose UM in the end. UM being his last visit could be a big factor. Not biased at all here, just a hunch. What do you think?
Posted by: Canefan86 | January 07, 2009 at 07:57 AM
let's see..2008 Miami was 7-6 including losing the last 3 games...2007 you were 5-7 again losing the last 3 games. The 2007 signing class was very weak. The 2008 signing class ranked 4th with 33 signees (7 with RR rankings of 6.0 or higher - 21%). The 2009 class has only three 6.0 or higher out of 19 verbals (16%).
USC currently has 53% of its 2009 verbals at 6.0 or higher and Florida has 41%. The Gator 2008 class had only 27% but if you include the 5.9 players, we had a whopping 55%.
First of all, the number of high quality players you have is low and more importantly, you gotta be able to coach 'em up. That is Miami's problem and why more and more Miami HS players will be looking elsewhere.
Posted by: william gray | January 07, 2009 at 08:34 AM
The YOU is done, and it would be good for those kids to go up north to play for a winning team, and a winning coach.
What will you dufuses ever talk about once the Gators close that NC gap?
The BCS is almost as flawed as when you cats won.
All for a playoff. YOU will never be in it.
Posted by: Mike | January 07, 2009 at 08:35 AM
The truth is that Miami will have 60-70 true freshman, redshirt freshman, and sophmores on their team next year... that isn't an attractive number for an incoming freshman looking to play. The Gators are going to have two small recruiting classes in a row (due to scholarship limitations), and be able to offer early playing time to high school kids with big ego's. Also, if Miami is going to continue to get the top players they are going to have to have a good season one of these years, and until they start getting some quality offensive lineman recruits they aren't going to win.
Posted by: ManYoo | January 07, 2009 at 09:08 AM
yeah, yeah, heard all this talk before when Urban first got to UF and said that he was going to focus on South FL, especially Miami-Dade. You see how that's worked out so far...

No one believes this bs do they? Corvin Lamb and his father just upset because more than likely he won't ve recruited by Miami. Why should he though he doesn't start on his own team now.
Aside from that fact when Florida comes into Dade county and beat us head to head for someone we ACTUALLY WANT, then bring up this bs. Other than that this is a none issue!

Very interesting:
Utah AG: BCS may violate antitrust laws
By BROCK VERGAKIS, Associated Press Writer Jan 6, 7:00 pm EST
SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—Utah’s attorney general is investigating the Bowl Championship Series for a possible violation of federal antitrust laws after an undefeated Utes team was left out of the national title game for the second time in five years.
Attorney General Mark Shurtleff contends the BCS unfairly puts schools like Utah, which is a member of a conference without an automatic bid to the lucrative bowl games, at a competitive and financial disadvantage.
“We’ve established that from the very first day, from the very first kickoff in the college season, more than half of the schools are put on an unlevel playing field,” Shurtleff said Tuesday. “They will never be allowed to play for a national championship.”
BCS administrator Bill Hancock said he couldn’t comment on the investigation until he had seen something in writing from the Utah attorney general’s office.
“We just don’t think it’s appropriate to comment until we’ve seen something to comment on,” Hancock said.
The BCS is designed to pit the top two teams against each other in a national championship game each year. It uses a complicated formula based on human polls and computer rankings to determine who plays in that game, which Shurtleff contends is biased.
No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Oklahoma have one loss each but will play for the BCS national championship Thursday night in Miami.
The Associated Press crowns its own national champion based on a poll of sports writers who are not bound to vote for the winner of the BCS title game. Many fans are clamoring for voters to put Utah—the nation’s only undefeated team—in the No. 1 spot in the final poll.
On Friday, Utah became the first team from a non-BCS conference to win two BCS bowls after it upset No. 4 Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl. Utah also beat Pittsburgh in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl to complete an undefeated season.
Shurtleff said his office is still in the initial stages of reviewing the Sherman Antitrust Act to see if a lawsuit can be filed. To succeed in a lawsuit, he would have to prove a conspiracy exists that creates a monopoly.
Shurtleff said he prefers that BCS officials and university presidents solve the problem of excluding some schools from a national title game by creating a playoff system, but added he’s committed to doing whatever it takes to produce change.
If a lawsuit is filed against the BCS, though, Shurtleff could end up suing the state he represents. Utah is a member of the Mountain West Conference and Utah State belongs to the Western Athletic Conference; both leagues are members of the BCS.
“We have to determine the answer to those questions,” said Shurtleff, whose planned investigation was reported by the Deseret News on Tuesday. “You determine who it is you’re bringing action against.”
The BCS is comprised of the 11 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences, the University of Notre Dame and representatives of the bowl organizations.
Under the BCS, about $9.5 million is distributed among Conference USA, the Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt and Western Athletic conferences for making their teams available to play in BCS games.
If a school from any of those conferences receives an at-large invitation to play in a BCS bowl or championship game, those conferences get an additional 9 percent of BCS revenues among them, which come from television rights and the bowls themselves.
If more than one school from those conferences make the BCS bowls or championship game, those conferences get an extra $4.5 million for each additional team.
By comparison, the share to each conference with an automatic berth in the BCS—the ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC—is about $18 million each. When a second team from one of those conferences qualifies to play in a BCS game, as the SEC accomplished this year with Alabama and Florida, that conference gets an additional $4.5 million.
“It’s not about bragging rights. It’s a multimillion dollar—hundreds of millions—business where the BCS schools get richer and non-BCS get poorer,” Shurtleff said.

Last time I checked Todd Chandler the best junior on Northwestern already committed to Miami. Northwestern players make regular visits to UM practices as noted Manny Navarro's blog. So I seriously doubt that Miami strangle hold on Norther will end next year or any time soon.
As for Colvin Lamb according to Scout Hosey Williams (Southwest), Brandon Gainer (Central), Jakhari Gore (Columbus), E Clements (BTW)are the top 4 running backs in Miami-Dade County.
So some even though I am sure Urban Meyer would love to start landing the best recruits in Miami-Dade County I doubt Colvin Lamb will end up at Florida or Miami.
Posted by: Rquig | January 07, 2009 at 12:12 PM
Jeeze, Sarasota Cane, you really are a freaking moron. We went 13-1 in 2006. How is losing to Ole Miss a joke? They just creamed Texas Tech. You're a pathetic excuse for a sports fan and have the knowledge of the ant I just crushed on my desk at work. Yes, I'm at work. Unlike you who is probably sitting in the basement of mommy's house re-watching the PAST glory days of the Canes, crying to yourself that you've been leaped by teams like USF and FAU in your home state.
Posted by: Adam S. | January 07, 2009 at 12:12 PM
I think that if Florida wants to stay competitive recruiting the state of Florida. Then yes, Urban needs to make better inroads to some if not all the schools in South Fla.
Posted by: AtlCane | January 07, 2009 at 12:15 PM
Canes are done! Shannon can't coach a lick and the Robert Marve situation will prove to be his downfall with recruits.
The "u" will be for UGLY when they finish in the bottom of the ACC whatever division they are in, in the All Chumps Conference.
Miami will be relegated to third best in the state, if they are LUCKY.

AltCane,
If you read at the top of the page we have not had a Miami-Dade recruit since 2005 and I think we have been pretty competitive. Its true all of us would love to have more Miami kids, but I would not say we need them to stay competitive for recuiting. We only have two Miami kids on the roster right now and both of them really do not play signifcantly. We just need to keep getting quality state of Florida kids whatever county they are from.

SJBUF,
UF must be a 4th rate subpar academic institution like UM, because you guys were ranked 49th in the country and we were a distant 51st... Get real... You A-holes have this superiority complex over that god-forsaken swampland in Gainesville for some crazy reason...
Once future NFL busts Tebow and Harvin are gone, you all will come back to reality...
Canes ACC champs in 2009
National Champs 2010...
You heard it here!!
SEC is Overrated!! The second best team in the conference lost to UTAH...
I know the ACC is down so spare us with the obvious about how weak we were this year... I'm a realist, so use your superior intelligence and come up with some other comeback
GO SOONERS!!!!!!

It's funny to read the CLASSY comments by the Canes here. They sound about as pathetic as the Noles, wallowing in the past, stuck in mediocrity in a crap conference in the present. Your coaching staff is a joke, headed up by Randi Zook. The only "U" that counts now is out in Utah. That's gotta hurt. Enjoy being a footnote and living in the past. That will help you more than you will ever know.
Posted by: Texigator | January 07, 2009 at 02:07 PM
Being stacked at RB hasn't stopped Miami from recruiting RB's in the past...or maybe they could turn him into another LB. Can't wait to see the Cane's faces when Bryce commits to Oregon. The house of cards is crumbling like the memories of the old Orange Bowl.
Posted by: DanMullensHairPiece | January 07, 2009 at 02:10 PM
SEC is overrated? They are the only conference to have a winning record in BCS National Championships. Oh, make that an undefeated record. 4-0. Every other conference has a losing record.
Big 12: 2-3
**ACC: 1-2
Big East: 1-2
Big Ten: 1-2
Pac Ten: 1-1
"I know the ACC is down so spare us with the obvious about how weak we were this year." Why should we spare you that? It isn't this year...it has been a long time that your conference is down. The fact that you get an automatic BCS bid is laughable.
Get a life, root for your own team.

Tim Tebow = Future practice squad fullback
To all the recruits considering UF, just look at their history in preparing players for the NFL... Just last week in the playoffs, Antrel Rolle, Edge James, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed were making plays all over the field... Don't you all want to be like those guys in the future... UM has playmakers on most NFL rosters... Just watch the highlights every week...

Wow! Sorry about that Gibby! Didn't mean to open Pandora's Box here. I just wanted to comment on your article about MNW! Good luck tomorrow night. Did I really just write that?
On a side note about who went to what school, the Gators have BY FAR the most fan's who have NOT attended their university than any other school in the state. It's not even close. FSU would be second. My mailman is a Gator, my butcher is a Gator, every white construction worker is a Gator, YOUR Congressman for the district encompassing your campus is a Gator, etc. None of them went to
UF! They simply love YOUR team! What's wrong with that??? Your school has no problem taking their money when they buy your merchandise/tickets/pay-per-view, etc.

Another factually incorrect statement, Sarasota. The people you are talking about are front runners that live in this state and, therefore, are rooting for the state's school, which is Florida.
But if you're talking about people who claim they are die-hard fans of teams that never even went to the university, scUM is the king of them all.

Hmm, I would hope Florida would have more fans/alumni
Basic math:
UM Enrollment around 14,000
UF (what are you up to that you accept anyone from the state of Florida???) 60,000??
even FSU math majors can figure out who will have more alumni/fans

What is the difference? Either you went to the school or you did not! How many of the Notre Dame faithful went to ND? Florida has a HUGE fan base. I would guess it is 10 times larger than Miami's. More than 1/2 of those fans never attended the school. The big difference is that Miami has a national following that rivals the big state schools fan base.
The games are broadcast on public airwaves, and as a result you get a lot of fans who never went to the college. You think the schools care when they are cashing the merchandising checks? Hell no! You think the BCS would be paying 18.5 million if the only fans watching the games attended the universities? Hell no!
When I lived in Colorado Springs, eveyone went to the Air Force games! I was in the Army at the time! The Air Force Academy was the home team, and everyone supported them!
It is popular to hate Miami. Some of it is deserved, most of it is just piling on. Marve was the last player arrested on our team (Oct '07). The Gators have kids playing for them tomorrow that should still be in jail for their crimes! What's the Gator arrest count this year up to this season 10, 11? I mean c'mon, shooting an AK-47 into the air while drunk should get you expelled!
I've been where you are three times now. What goes up, always comes down. Coaches take better jobs, you have to fill the position with a sub-standard replacement. Eventually the whole thing implodes, and you have to start all over! There is no way around it, and money cannot fix it! Enjoy the ride Adam S., it won't last!

The thing is U have to look at it from a gayturd fans perspective. It took their team 15 years and 7 tries to beat Miami. Now thats a long time and in that time they had to see brock berlin come back and beat em in a bowl game. They also had to see most of our guys go to the NFL and make names for themselves while the former gayturds continue to ride on NFL benches. See miami has had so much success that we know what a down year is and IT CAN'T KEEP US DOWN BECAUSE we also know what being on top of CF feels like. This is something new to gayturd fans..
