LaPorta headed for the Big Leagues

La! Porta! By Mike McCall

Former Florida Sultan of Swat Matt LaPorta was called up to the majors by the Cleveland Indians on Friday: LINK (it's a good read, check it out).

LaPorta, UF's all-time home runs leader (a record Preston Tucker might challenge if he sticks around), got the good news after his AAA Columbus club faced Durham, and he had to work around a canceled flight this morning to meet the big club in Detroit.

LaPorta got a chance to play first base again on Friday after playing in the outfield for a while, but the move came as such a surprise that he had to borrow a teammates' first baseman's mitt becuase he left his in Columbus.

No word yet on where the former No. 7 pick will play for the Indians, but he didn't see any action on Saturday against Detroit, as Ryan Garko played first and Shin-Soo Choo was in left.

I worked for the UAA and worked a lot of baseball, especially during the 2005 season. LaPorta is, simply put, a monster when it comes to hitting the ball. Cleveland will soon forget about Pronk if they give him a legit shot.
