Gators coach Urban Meyer is ... BAAA-ACK! Says he's going to coach in spring; With thoughts from Jeremy Foley

GAINESVILLE -- Urban Meyer said on Saturday night at the basketball game that he's not taking a leave of absence and plans to coach the Gators during spring football. Here's what I want to know: Did anything really change over the last month? AND, was it any coincedence that Meyer dropped this news bombshell on the weekend super recruit Ronald Powell visited Gainesville?

ANYWAY, it's good news for the Gators and bad news for everyone else. Here's a copy of my story for Sunday's newspaper. Nice win by the Gators men's basketball team on Saturday, by the way. Florida defeated South Carolina 58-56 on a last-second shot by UF junior forward Chandler Parsons. Florida has won three straight since beginning its conference schedule 0-2. If the Gators keep this up, they'll be back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. Check Sunday's paper for my basketball story.

I'm heading to Mobile, Ala., the city of my birth, on Sunday for weeklong coverage of the Senior Bowl. I'll be writing about Tim Tebow, Dolphins, Canes and everything else that comes along. Of course, I'll only be blogging about the Gators.

GAINESVILLE — The most interesting thing about Urban Meyer’s “I’m back” press conference on Saturday was not something he said but rather his actions.

-
Meyer took the time to shake reporters’ hands, something he never does. He smiled. He cracked jokes. He’s fattening up. He’s still taking a break after National Signing Day on Feb.3 but he said on Saturday at halftime of the Florida men’s basketball game that he plans to coach spring football. Florida defeated South Carolina 58-56.

-
“I keep hearing about this time off, and the people I’m closest to are going to demand I take some time off, but I tried that already,” Meyer said. “I tried a day and a half and it didn’t work.”

-
Meyer said on Saturday that he has gained 20 pounds since the end of football season, when his deteriorating health contributed to his decision to suddenly quit his job. Meyer changed his mind the following day and instead decided to take and indefinite leave of absence. At the time, he said he didn’t know if he was ever going to coach again but he wanted to leave open the opportunity for coming back.

-
Meyer apparently couldn't stay away. He never took any time off and instead began recruiting immediately after the Gators’ victory against Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl.

-
This latest twist of As Urban Meyer’s World Turns comes 10 days before National Signing Day. On Saturday, Meyer and the UF football program hosted prospect Ronald Powell of Moreno Valley, Calif., on an official visit. Powell is the No.1-rated recruit in the nation, according to Rivals.com. He is being pursued by Florida and Southern Cal, which is now coached by Meyer’s archrival, former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin.

-
“It’s game day,” Meyer said. “It’s game day for 10 days.”

-
National Signing Day is Feb.3. Meyer said that he will undergo tests on his heart in February but wouldn’t elaborate. When asked if he was undergoing stress tests, Meyer said, “Everything.”

-
“I’m not going to get into it publicly,” Meyer said.

-
Nearly as odd as Meyer’s offseason drama has been the way the UF football program has responded to it. It hasn’t affected the program negatively. In fact, the opposite has been true. Florida annihilated Cincinnati in the bowl game and quarterback Tim Tebow set a BCS bowl-game record for total yards.

-
Not long after the bowl victory, Florida’s recruiting class began coming together. Meyer recently received commitments from several of the nation’s top prospects, including safety Matt Elam of West Palm Beach Dwyer, who was named Mr. Football for the state of Florida earlier this week. Elam, who is already enrolled at UF, was recognized at halftime of Saturday’s basketball game for his award.

-
Florida athletics director Jeremy Foley said on Saturday that he was happy “with the direction” the football program is headed but also said Meyer “knows what he has to do and there are still some things he has to do.”

-
One of Meyer’s most important tasks of the past month was replacing longtime defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, who is now the head coach at Louisville. Meyer said he hired former Dolphins coach George Edwards after consulting with Dolphins coach Tony Sparano and former Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni.

-
“I love Coach Edwards,” Meyer said. “He’s a great hire and I’ve known him for awhile and he came strongly recommended by a bunch of people and kind of blew us away when he came up here.”

He told The Times his daughter Nicki, 18, hugged him and said, "I get my daddy back."

"I saw it as a sign from God that this was the right thing to do," Meyer told The Times of his daughter's reaction. "I was worried about letting people down. I was feeling so awful and concerned about my health. That was among several other signs that said it's time to back away."

Or whatever.

Freaked out after a royal Alabama beatdown and then got over it with time. Nothing more than that.

What a nutcase, or is it a ploy to keep recruits from signing somewhere else? Was he ever really sick? Honesty is a gator forte.

Honesty is not a gator forte, I meant to say.

It worked either way. Just thought you were being sarcastic the first time.

10 Year 55 Mil. Extension ?

leon orr transcript problems,
demar dorsey grade problems.
All you need to get into THUG U (university of florida) is being a Florida resident and have a drivers license, so what does that say about your incoming class.
Alachua county jail is looking for more guards and Huntley's law practice is hiring for the new GAYtors.

4 Hating Cane posts on a Gator Blog....the sweet smell of success!

Urban Meyer is the real deal. Those of us who know-know. That is why these kids and THEIR PARENTS sign with him! Of course having the best academic school south of Georgia Tech and the Gator Nation makes the total package. Randy Shannon does not exactly exude confidence and success and THAT IS WHY THEY DONT SIGN WITH HIM. I LOVE THE WAY THE LAST BLOG HAD TO GO BACK TO ANCIENT HISTORY TO TALK ABOUT CANE SUCCESS!

KEEP ON HATING...IT MEANS WERE KICKING YOUR A@#!

KEEP ON SUCKING THAT....OH WAIT, I CANT SAY THAT.

LOL The canes perfected this. See the 66 recruiting violations that got them that '83 team and the Pell grant scam that landed them all those late '80's and early '90's players.

Stop whining and win your crappy conference already.

Funny how one can assume these are all canes hating on this blog. Notice the 'noles, FIU, FAU, et. al. are not whining on this blog, just lame-o, jealous canes! LOL

Unconfirmed sources out of Gainesville are reporting that a divine being calling himself 'Tim' was seen administering an ancient 'temple rub' to Coach Meyer at a mystical 'swampy' location on the UF campus, and in a 'flash' the Gator Coach was seen texting Nicki & his beloved family, as well as certain 5 star recruits (exact order unclear) that he had been quote "healed."

canesrule is an odious filthy dirtbag

Still need to take some time off Coach!! Need you around for the long term so you can continue to kick Cane, Nole, Dawg, Vol etc butt!!! And besides, SOMEBODY needs to challenge Saban in the conference!

He'll take a few weeks off after NSD. He always takes a little time around then.

***Urban Meyer will resign after signing day***

Posted by: Cybercane | January 22, 2010 at 12:56

U are the same clown that posted several hundred times that Urban was a lock for Notre Dame.

Florida coach Urban Meyer said he plans to coach every day of spring practices that begin March 17. Meyer is “feeling really good” after working out and gaining 20 pounds since late December. Meyer has been advised by wife Shelley and Athletics Director Jeremy Foley to take time off after National Signing Day on Feb. 3, Meyer said.

Sorry U delusional idiot. We have the best coach in the nation and you are stuck with a guy that is unqualified and is getting walloped in recruiting in his own back yard.

Your miniature crusade to try and create uncertainty around UF is laughable and sad. Great job stealing that kid from Buffalo, oh wait...he's still deciding. Great job stealing that Cain kid, oh wait.....he had NO offers.
Maybe someday you will have enough fuzz on your sack to own up to what a disaster U have on your hands. Clearly that time is not now.

YOU ARE AN EPIC FAIL !

News flash: Meyer to sign Bryan Pata's ghost and Elian Gonzalez for 2014.

Jo, here is an idea: how about comparing coaches when they were in their playing days?

Not just shannon and meyer but anybody you can think of.

Screw Shannon. Screw U

Ur irrelevant chump. Go write a paper about Shula v Schnelly. Better yet. Pound dirt loser.

How about comparing records from last year? What discourse....comedy at a very high level!

Here is an idea:

The Gators are great, and UF is a tremendous university.

You need some more sleep...

What ever happened to civility and reasoned discourse?

yayyyy!!!!! go meyers!

Why are the Canes so worked up?

It's still 8 months before DA U has to go out and lose another game.

9/11, how appropriate.

ON 9/12, y'all will be talking about how the "DA U will LOSE to anybody, anywhere, anytime."

Uran is not the type of guy who Chills out he is in or out but not just chilling. I'm not sure how he will ever get out. He's just not the type to sit back and watch the football world march on by.

Oops that would Urban......
