By Mike McCall
Defensive tackle Gary Brown was dismissed from the UF football team on Friday after his arrest last weekend on misdemeanor battery charges. UF spokesman Steve McClain released this statement: "Gary Brown has had a history during his time here of not meeting a set of expectations we have for the student athletes in our football program, and therefore he is no longer part of our program."
This isn't really a huge loss for the Gators. Brown was a five-star recruit last year, but he didn't show a ton of promise early on. Moreover, UF just signed a recruiting class being hailed as one of the best ever, especially on the defensive line, so filling his spot shouldn't be too tough. Florida still has one more scholarship to cut to make the limit of 85, so players should be especially careful not to give the coaches an easy decision like Brown did.

A shame for Brown but let this be a warning to all student athletes that consequences will be handed out for stupidity....Go Gators

That is a cosmetic makeover. The root of the problem still exists. We'll soon see another blemish appear.

One has 2 wonder if urbie 'seat out 1 play, or maybe 1 quarter if you draw blood' myers wasn't on his so-called rehab (opps i mean) 'vacation' if this silverback would'nt have been kicked off the team.
So much for your 5 star recruits. another one bites the dust.

When urban was in charge we got to decide what our punishment was.
Please come home soon. brandon..

Brown should head on south to Coral Gables where such behavior is not only tolerated, but encouraged. Can't spell "scum" without "UM"!
Posted by: Edgar | February 20, 2010 at 09:19 AM
Edgar-
That was twenty plus years ago when that type of behavior was tolerated. Sorry to inform you that UFelons have now taken that label away from The "U"!! Thanks!!!!

I understand you're a hater, and that's cool. But the "primate" references are pretty offensive, at least to me and my heritage.
He's a young guy who made a mistake and is now paying for it. He'll live and so will this team.

question for you all...when is "urbie the fruit cake" supposed to leave the mental institution where he is recuperating?...

FZB-you are the fruitcake here, for such insipid and wacky comments.Go back to the asylum and play nice with the other inmates...

Jo-
After your "what else is new about the latest arrest" commentary, I would have imagined you might have had something decent to say about the way in which this was swiftly and surely handled.Do at least show some balance and give UF their due in kicking the bum off the team...
Posted by: DieHardG8r | February 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM
Gary Brown should head down to UM. Although he's no longer a true 5-star recruit, UM could at least say that he was at the time of recruiting - something they don't get many of. The way the ACC is running up and down the field against UM, he could only help with his fat ass in the way.
Posted by: So Cal Gator | February 20, 2010 at 02:05 PM

none of the above and as long as 'student athletes are playing, probably not much more. Just so you know, most other teams at the top have similar issues, maybe it's because the kids really shoudn't be in school. you should be well aware that when UM was the best, off-field were just accepted as part of the opportunity to be the best. I'm sure you went to UF and you're probably smarter than any of these 'student football' players. Just remember when you drilled UM for the same problems.

Well im not going to say anything negative about Brown im sure he is a good kid that he just made a huge mistake and Urban Meyer made the best decision and that was to teach him a life lesson. Sweeping this under the rug like some programs do would not only hurt the student-athlete but it hurts the program i pray that this steers Brown in the right direction and hopefully he will have a successful career elsewhere

Thats because gator nation has its head in the sand about the state of the program, and I am not talking about wins and loses. When jo sheds any negative light on the program fans ignore the blog for the most part or try to spin it in another direction. Coach quits, then comes back, then takes A leave, players getting arrested, kicked off the team, assistants leaving in droves. Who would'ent want to tune in to all this drama. The gator program will implode within three years. Mark it down because it will happen. It happens to every team once they peak. You dont stay at the top forever. Not that its A bad thing but it only lasts so long. Your program is in turmoil and you cant see the forest for the trees. It was A good run but it is OVER!

What the hell are U building down here? You have coach that 50% of the fan base hates. You have empty "Stadium Saturdays". You have a president that is ok with mediocrity. You have alumni like W. Sapp and B Blades calling Randy out. You haven't sniffed an ACC title let alone a BCS game. The only thing your building are vacation packages for recruits who want to visit SoBe on da U's dime. Oh and I just read the cane blog and the ovewhelming feeling is that 2011 maybe da u's year. You and your cohorts are like the '72 'fins...living in the past.
