GAINESVILLE -- Amazingly, I haven't received any emails from excited Gators fans regarding Steve Addazio's visit to Miami. Hello, Gators fans! Where are you? Is it true that only about 50 fans showed up for the Gator Gathering? That's the information I received from colleague Barry Jackson, who attended the event.
I spoke with Addazio briefly on Thursday during a conference call and he said Gator Gathering was "great." During the same conference call, Addazio said that he didn't know if UF coach Urban Meyer would be attending the Southeastern Conference spring meetings June 1-4 at the Sandestin Hilton.
Addazio has become the UF football team's public mouthpiece this offseason. The offensive coordinator has taken Meyer's place at several Gator Gatherings and represented UF during the SEC's coaches conference call on Thursday. For whatever reason, Addazio would not address the regional recruiting assignments of his fellow assistant coaches during the current high school evaluation period. Spring football for Florida high schools begins next week. Addazio did say during the conference call that he expects UF to field one of the best offensive lines in the country this fall. UF returns four starters along the offensive line.
Listed are the regional recruiting assignments for the Gators' assistant coaches. Of note, co-defensive coordinator/cornerbacks coach Teryl Austin does not have an assigned region in the state of Florida.
Chuck Heater, co-defensive coordinator/safeties: Panhandle to Tallahassee area.
Brian White, tight ends: Alachua County and north-central Florida.
Scot Loeffler, quarterbacks: Jacksonville area down to Flagler County and also Marion County.
D.J. Durkin, linebackers: Daytona Beach area and down the coast to Martin County
Stan Drayton, running backs: Orlando and Lakeland areas and also Miami-Dade.
Dan McCarney, defensive line: Tampa Bay area.
Steve Addazio, offensive coordinator/offensive line: Manatee and Sarasota down to Collier County and across the Everglades to Glades and Hendry counties.
Zach Azzanni, wide receivers: Palm Beach and Broward counties.

Hey jo, Nothing about Urban once again covering up positive drug tests for gator football players? I get it, you have to be very careful about what you write. I dont know if any gator fans will be on hand to ask Addazio about recruiting Patchan away from UM but I know alot of Canes fans that would like to thank him.

Patchan laughed at U clowns.
He also did his assignment correctly jealous clown. TEBOW missed the blitz, not Patchan U clown.
Randy is the worst recruiter in the state.
Patchan saw what a clown he is.

No, he'll talk about what a bad-ass conference the SEC is.

Jo -
what are your thoughts about Jamarcus Russell being the biggest draft bust of ALL TIME in the NFL? Word is bookies in England are giving 2:1 odds on Timmy taking that monicker by 2012. Amazing the misperception of athletes from the SEC as being legit, no?

Cupcake teams? The SEC is the best conference there is!!!!!! ACC, bite me!
Posted by: Xman | April 28, 2010 at 01:10 PM
Jo - can you weigh in on why Canes players in the NFL have a much higher success rate than those from Gator Nation? Are they simply inferior athletes or does it have to do with their gimmick system they run that essentially makes them underdeveloped? I realize the level of competition they play against is watered down so most GM's apply a multiplier when assessing them for drafts (i.e. 4 star in college = 2 star in pros). I'm considering doing my thesis on this.
Posted by: Turd grad student | April 28, 2010 at 01:16 PM
SEC PC -- I saw Jamarcus Russell fumble on the goal line against the Gators his senior year, then choke against Auburn and look insignificant in games when it REALLY counted. The Raiders should have seen this. He was an OK player on a great team. Never in his career did he put the team on his shoulders and win on the big stage in college. Didn't he hold out his rookie year also? LOL
Tebow may become pedestrian but he won't be the DISASTER JR was.

TGS -- perhaps you can create a regression model that shows the relationship between number of players put in the NFL and championships won with them. That model should show UM with (at least) 4 NC's in recent years.
UM either squandered that talent needlessly or the NFL thing is bogus...hmmmmmm

We have a drug policy here!" Meyer said in a fiery speech. "You smoke marijuana, you won't play football!"
Just ask Percy and Aaron.
Posted by: Blowin smoke | April 28, 2010 at 01:27 PM
Did that ELSC...it correlated to their 5 'ships and playing in numerous others. What had me scratching my head though was the lack of correlation to Gators success on college level but underperforming on the NFL stage. There's no smoke & mirrors with the NFL as it is the most tried and true marker of talent. I suspect additional research will conclude with the undeniable amount of talent that resides in So FL. My action plan to Gator coaches would be to set up a double wide down there and recruit, recruit, recruit because central and north FL pale in comparison to the horses down south.
Posted by: Turd grad student | April 28, 2010 at 01:32 PM

On your first point, I would attribute to synergies and coaching. By the way, the only people I find chiriping about this "correlation" are canes fans...since they can't actually win on the football field of late.
I'm looking at the recruiting rankings from the last few years and I think Meyer & Co. are doing just fine....your double wide is safe.

- Momentum from winning the 2010 Sugar Bowl “surged” into recruiting, allowing the team to add to its already talent-filled class.
- Excited about redshirt freshman Jordan Reed’s athleticism and ability to play both tight end and Wildcat quarterback. Joked that people want the team to re-name it “Gator-cat or something.” Also thinks freshman Gerald Christian made great strides.
- Really excited for the emergence of redshirt junior wide receiver Deonte Thompson.
- Believes that redshirt freshman WR Andre Debose has a “real dynamic ability.”
- Said freshman WR Robert Clark is one of the most competitive players on the team.
- Freshman QB Trey Burton has “that competitive specialness to him.” Said Tim Tebow had “it,” Donovan McNabb had “it” at Syracuse and Burton has “a lot of that going on.”
- Believes new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has done “a phenomenal job in the spring.” He said head coach Urban Meyer got a glowing recommendation from his “best friend,” Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Billy Davis.
- Mentioned redshirt sophomore Jeremy Brown specifically as the second cornerback across from Janoris Jenkins. Said freshman Josh Shaw impressed but did not mention senior Moses Jenkins at all.
- Plans are for freshman safety Matt Elam to see the field plenty. “Matt [Elam] is something. You will see him game one,” he said.
- Called the linebackers “dynamic” and is really excited to them during games. Singled out sophomore Jon Bostic for his hard-hitting and redshirt freshman Jelani Jenkins as “one of the fastest backers I’ve ever seen. He really goes.”
- Redshirt junior WR Chris Rainey is the man when it comes to returning the ball, junior running back Jeff Demps may get a shot as well.
- Team captains: seniors center Mike Pouncey and defensive end Justin Trattou have already been named. Also mentioned senior safety Ahmad Black, Thompson, redshirt senior defensive tackle Lawrence Marsh and, of course, redshirt freshman QB John Brantley as team leaders who could be elevated.
U see cane tards, we gots talent all over the field. I'll take this PARTIAL list over your light in the pants soft roster ANY DAY. Simply put, we are better than U. Now U go Underachieve yet again as U KNOW U will.

There is no doubt in my mind that UM and FSU will be on the up and up soon. However, hasn't (almost) 20 years in a conference taught you guys anything??? Winning your conference is compulsory. OOC is nice, but winning all those (OOC) games and dropping 3 or 4 in conference doesn't do much for ya'.
Seems like Noles and Canes have been the ones re-building. Do yourselves a favor and focus on winning your conference -- all good things happen from there. In the words of my buddies Waters and Gilmore: If you don't eat your meat you can't have any pudding, how can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?

Posted by: you have none | April 29, 2010 at 01:15 PM
How many championships did those 11 probowlers get ya'? 1? Looks like canesville squandered an opportunity to get 3 or 4 more NC's! How did that happen? I'm sure there are a million excuses. You all seem to be coming up with many of those lately.

If I'm not mistaken Galen got in trouble for having a grad ass't drive $59 (out of his own pocket) to Palatka to pay Jarvis Williams' child support. Kept JW out of jail and got Galen banned from coaching.
That's almost in the same category as Lufor's slush fund.

...not sure where the pay for recruits part came from. LOL - wanna fight me Zooker! Almost as funny as SH'UP BEATCH Sapp.

I never delete comments. Come on! You guys should know this by now. If your comment was deleted (I doubt that it was because I'm the only person at the Herald that monitors this blog), then please email me the information and I'll post it for you. I was away from the blog for a few days while on "special assignment" in Orlando, but I'm back in Gainesville now.
