Chris Rainey has rejoined the Florida football team, but he still has a few hurdles left to clear before he gets back on the field.
Rainey--suspended since a Sept. 14 arrest on felony stalking charges--is practicing with the Gators again but will not play Saturday against Mississippi State.
“Chris Rainey is working towards being part of our football team again,” UF coach Urban Meyer said in a statement. “I’m disappointed that he violated a core value of our program, but he continues to pay a price for his actions. Chris will have to meet a set of conditions to become a part of our team again and although he is practicing, he will not play this weekend.
“The timetable for his return will depend on his ability to follow the guidelines we have laid out for him.”
Rainey’s legal troubles arose from a late-night spat with an ex-girlfriend, which culminated in him sending her a text message that read, “Time to Die [expletive].” The victim appeared in court the next day, saying she never felt threatened and that she didn’t want Rainey to be prosecuted.
Rainey accepted deferred prosecution from the state attorney that reduced the charge to a misdemeanor. It will be dropped altogether if Rainey maintains good behavior and meets public service and financial obligations.
“I am embarrassed and sorry for my actions and I apologize to everyone that I affected by my behavior,” Rainey said in a statement. “I’m working towards being a part of the Florida football program again, and I realize that representing this University is a privilege. I have spent the last several weeks reflecting on my actions and realized that is not who I want to be.”
In two games before the incident, Rainey had six catches for 34 yards and a touchdown and added 16 rushing yards on four carries. Upon his return, he’ll likely be a key part of Florida’s struggling offense, which Meyer said lacks big playmakers. Rainey has three runs of longer than 70 yards in his career.
Given the time since the incident and the resolution of the charges, it seems completely reasonable to me that Rainey's back with the team. I had guessed Miss St. as his return game when this happened, but it looks like my prediction will be off by at least a week.
What do you think? Too soon? Should be be allowed to play? And when he comes back, what do you expect from him? His stats weren't exacly eye-popping when he played, but with all Meyer's talk yesterday about the lack of big plays in the offense, you have to figure he'll be viewed as a big asset.
And let's not forget about this:

If Randy gave players second chances, maybe Marve would be starting this weekend.
I wonder if the staff is getting the tarps ready for the next home game.

Those darn core values--when its reached a point you can't threaten to murder a girl without some people getting their panties in a bunch, then it is time to re-adjust our core values (downward)...AGAIN!
Chris Rainey will not be playing this week because...well...uh...Mississippi State stinks!
Hopefully Chris will be able to follow our strict guidelines (not get arrested for a felony or at least not get caught in the act of performing a felony) and become a model criminal....err, I mean...citizen!
We believe in giving these kids a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, etc chance if they run a 4.2 forty or are 6'6" tall, weigh 335lbs and can block, tackle and wreak havoc on a football field or can throw a football thru a brick wall or catch anything thrown in their direction. Absent those qualities we strongly believe they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Go Gators and Go Huntley Johnson!

Luke would have thrown his hat in the ring, but a Gator football player stole it from him.
Is that a felony or some more of Urban's "core values"?

Hmm, it appears Curse Piggy wants the Canes fans to start posting here again.
I was REALLY hoping that having both teams lose would mean he would show a LITTLE class and back off.
Instead, he figures ruining it for everyone is the better option.
Gator fans, you might not like what you will be reading, but realize it is due to your favorite racist troll attacking the Canes sites incessantly for the past three days, even after directly being asked to stop.
A real shame, I was enjoying not having to prove that sicko wrong for his lynching threats, like he did to UMike on the Canes blog this weekend, but he doesn't want your group to have a decent blog if it means we would also have a decent blog to ourselves.
He is the kind of person that would rather crash his car into another car rather than let that car go on their way undamaged.

There is no hurdle or moral dilemma large enough to prevent UFelony to make a sacrifice to the football god.
This is what it means to be in the SEC. No morals, no ethics, no principles or moral courage. It is why Texas laughed at the mere though of joining the SEC. It is trash from top to bottom.

UF had no choice but to let him back on the team. That was a lawsuit waiting to happen. He can use the concussion defense. All he had to say is after the concussion, the unoversity didn't properly monitor me. Look how long they monitored Tebow when he got his concussion.

With our season TOAST already, why in the world would UF allow this jerk back on the team? Its time to be hard on these guys in prep for next year...why not. Now it simply looks like a desperate compromise of those “core values” there Urban designed to bring some offense back to the field. I for one also think Rainey has been overrated from the start. For God sake, can we not get a 225lb running back PLEASE!!!

I didn't think I could feel any worse after the LSU loss...I was wrong...today I learn that Urban has reinstated Rainey. Maybe Urban will reinstate Jamar Hornsby next.
It has now reached the point we will do anything to win and I am sick of this garbage. It is clear that without Tim Urban's offense simply doesn't work, but playing these habitual criminals in hopes of a win is about as pathetic as it gets.
Keep it up Urban and the NCAA will come in and do your job for you and it won't be pretty!
Posted by: Gator for Life | October 12, 2010 at 06:39 PM
I agree with you, Gator for Life. Rainey threatens to kill a girl and after sitting out a few games after Huntley performed his legal voo-doo AGAIN and our offense won't work he is allowed to play with Meyer who is talking about some mumbo/jumbo regarding our 'core values'. Well, THOSE ARE NOT MY CORE VALUES!!!
I am starting to get a very sick feeling that we are headed for BIG, BIG, BIG trouble and it won't be fixed without some harsh sanctions by the SEC and NCAA.

I cant believe Meyer is really putting Rainey back on that football team
What is wrong with that coach?
Rainey threatened to kill a woman. Does that not mean anything to him
Thats someones daughter
Come on Meyer, if that was to happen to someone in your family would you want that kid playing football?
I dont think so
Stop making a fool of yourself. Rainey should of been dismissed from the team as soon as the text was proven to be true
End of story
Bad move Meyer

You guys are crazy. What Rainey did was wrong, but people text stupid things all the time, and it was a spat between lovers. What should we do? Hang Chris Rainey? Please! Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I think missing the first half of the season is enough punishment, and no, I don't think at all this shows desperation or a compromise of values by Meyers. Rainey is a good guy who did something stupid. Guys say stupid stuff to their girlfriends all the time. WE SHOULD HAVE GIVEN CAM NEWTON A SECOND CHANCE! I totally support Meyer on this one, and am repulsed by the sanctimonious blabber on this blog.

Joe,
Dont you feel this is just wrong that a player that did something like this should be allowed back on a football team in the same season?
What team he is on isnt the point
What is the point is that the text has been proven out to be true and no matter how some people want to try and spin it, that is violence towards woman
Since youre a writer here I guess I cant what your opinion would be and thats understandable because they pay the coin
I have talked to many long time Gator fans who are very upset that Meyer is allowing Rainey back on the team and a few going as far as calling and sending emails about it
The have season tickets so dont ask me who they called or emailed. I havent been to any Gator games

Mazolli @ Ole Miss also comes to mind. I still cannot figure out how the Wilson kid was allowed back on campus much less the team after brandishing and shooting the AK-47.
A reporter said that once the public starts keeping count of a teams transgressions, they've already lost the PR battle!
It's not that UF's season is lost, it's just that Rainey is not going to take the team anywhere that they could get to without him.
Posted by: Thomas Jefferson | October 12, 2010 at 08:20 PM
Rico Nice,
I think you met to type: Let he who is without a felony record fire the first AK47!
As for giving Cam a second chance, please consider there are only so many computers to go around.
Personally, I believe we should have given Jamar Hornsby a second chance because after all what is a dead girl going to do with credit cards? In other words, no harm--no foul--PLAY ON!

Actually, I posted ONCE. Jo can back me upon that. The others were folks posting using my ID.
I was attempting to get the guy to leave us alone on the Canes sites. It worked. However, it meant he pretended to be me on here instead. That is why I don't get attached to an ID on here.
Strange thing though, you would figure you would KNOW that I wouldn't post the stuff written in my name. When I change names, I still admit to being the same person. I just change names to throw off the ID stealer for a little bit.
So, Aziz, do you understand the difference now? Those other "Feral Cat" posts were not me. In fact, and Jo can back me up on this, this is only my second post here in the past WEEK.
Now, as per the usual actions of the racist obsessed troll, he will post a bunch more messages in my name, and you will "believe" that it is me. Good luck with that....

In fact, the ID stealing troll has used my ID more than I have, just look at the next blog and see the one time I used it to the multiple times he used it.
Thanks for showing your level of intelligence on here for all to see. Claiming "Time to Diet" was Rainey's actual intent is a weak excuse as well. I bet you think Ronnie Wilson was just doing skeet shooting when he fired at an assualt victim. Some people are WAY to gullible for their own good.
