Gators coach Will Muschamp releases statement in response to DT Sharrif Floyd's suspension

The NCAA released a statement informing the University of Florida that defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd has been suspended for two games for receiving impermissible benefits. There's a ton of information going around right now, and coach Will Muschamp just released an official statement. Here it is in full:

"I’m angered, disgusted and extremely disappointed that Sharrif will have to miss two games.

In my opinion Sharrif is getting lumped into what is bad about college athletics. As we indicated in the statement Saturday night his issue was not related to sports agents, University of Florida boosters or his recruitment to Florida or anywhere else.

Sharrif is what is good about college athletics – his life is about survival, struggle, disappointment and adversity. I have recruited kids that did not know where they would sleep that night or what they would eat. Growing up, Sharrif was one these kids. Sharrif’s life is also about triumph, honesty, integrity, determination, perseverance and character.  The NCAA stated that he received preferential treatment; there is nothing preferential about his life.

He grew up with only his great grandmother and still sends her Pell Grant money so she can pay her bills. How many kids do you know that would do that?  I know one – Sharrif Floyd.

I want to make it clear that this issue is not about sports agents, Florida boosters or his recruitment to Florida or anywhere else.  The issue is about his survival and the only reason the NCAA, the SEC and the University of Florida were aware of these issues is because Sharrif brought them to our attention last February. He came forward because, as I said before, he is honest and because of his integrity.

The toughest day that I have had as a head football coach at Florida was the day that I had to tell Sharrif that he could not play in our game vs. FAU last week. I took away part of his family.

He had tears in his eyes and said “What have I done wrong?” I told him he did nothing wrong. It wasn’t any easier to tell him today that he would be missing Saturday’s game.

I have two sons at home- if they end up like Sharrif I will consider myself a successful father."

More to come later.

That's the kind of coach guys want to play for

Couldn't have said it better than Eddie above me. Go Muschamp! Go Gators!

DITTO!!! Go get'em Coach. Gators are going to be hungry this weekend.

WOW, INCREDIBLE! WHETHER YOU'RE A CANE, GATOR OR NOLE THAT'S a great statement by a coach supporting one of his players!

While I never root for Gators...what a great move by their new coach. Already showing way more class then the silly Meyer full of lies.

I wish this young man a future of happiness and success.

definitively one of the better speeches i have heard defending one of your players. it doesn't matter who you root for, i give props to that coach for saying this

He should have used the money to pay for the abortion of the stripper he knocked up.

I think Ole Miss should get the death penalty for all the support provided to Michael Oher by the Couies.

Coach Mus seems to be an upstanding guy and Floyd seems like a pretty honest kid. Best of luck to both and proud that they are Gators.

The bad part of the story is that Floyd has to pay the money back. I'm not with that due to the circumstances. UF fans need to get real about the suspension. He deserves the suspension and it could have been longer. He broke rules just like UM players. You think he's the only underprivileged player in college football. If Muschamp would have complained about paying the money back, I would support him completely. He didn't, so he should just keep his mouth shut and take his medicine like other coaches do.

Another PE coach in a bible-thumping town.

Ignorant 'necks never learn.

So its ok at ufelony, but not at UM? And for the record, my tax dollars pay his grandmothers bils? That is not right. Why did muschump tell him he did nothing wrong? You guys are the biggest hypocrites in the country. How many other ufelons did n nothing wrong, besides the thefts, dui's and batterers?

Sidcane -- splitting his lunch money with grandma is not the same as systematically defrauding the taxpayers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars (that we know about). You have a short memory.

Unbelievable! Why aren't these stupid canes keeping a low profile??? Your situation is way worse than this. What your current players got was a rounding error compared to what Vince Wilfork and the canes in the NFL got. Crawl back in your stadiumless hole and watch your team play on The Ocho.

Further proof the knucklehead canes making the red neck references have never left miami-dade -- have you guys ever been to a game in Auburn, Baton Rouge, Fayetteville, or Starkville? G-ville is a freakin' metropolis compared to those towns.

Have your mom buy you a bus ticket and go on the road to another stadium, oops forgot, you're canes you don't go to live football games.

Glasshouse...it's still stealing. Average joe...Our situation is alot better off after the truth started coming out. Don't think the Ncaa is looking at just one player up there. And blah,blah,blah...For your info I was born in N.fl. and only lived in Miami for 2 years in the 90's. Ive been to games across the S.E. and the swamp hole was one of the worst experiences. The archetect's screwed that design up kund of like modern parking lots, hard to get in and out of and hot as heck. And for the record , Gainesville is not even a metropolis compared to Palatka. And I have season tickets to the canes games , every year. I would be willing to bet i've been to the swamphole more times than U. "Life is a box of chocolates" , right?

sidcane, we're the biggest hypocrites??? please explain that comment. Also, please explain your trashing of the swamp, when year in and year out, it's picked as one of the toughest places to play in America. And one more thing, please explain how a cane fan can question any teams home stadium, when you are renting one!!??

Anyone watch Michigan notre dame any sec defense would eat these 2 teams up for lunch

Sorry, nothing is remotely scarier than running the bum-gauntlet from the OB to your car after a night game in Overtown.

It was like Escape from New York!

Sid you have turned into a typical low life cane "fan". Your sorry canes took dirty money form a dirty booster to do dirty things. Floyd took honest money from honest folks to do honest things. Only a mush brained fool could even compare the two situations. BTW, the Swamp is a much nicer experience than the OB was and definitely better than your rent a stadium. Gainesville is your typical all American, college town, a beautiful place to live and or visit. Outside of the beach areas, Miami is a sprawling mess of traffic congestion and overcrowding, a poorly planned city marred by unemployment and crime and run by a bunch of corrupt and incompetent fools, a real banana republic.

He had tears in his eyes and said “What have I done wrong?”

Oh God...barf...he knew what he was doing. Listen...much respect to the coach for sticking up for his player....class act. I can't say "it's unfortunate that this happened" to him as this is obviously a problem happaning all over college football. As a Cane fan....I'm surely not gonna talk smack about this as we have had our share of problems. As fans though...Canes, Noles, Gators...we need to stick together on this subject and support one another...NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THEIR SCHOOL on probation, death penalty, bowl bans, etc....what fun would that be. The NCAA needs to re-evaluate how they run college athletics...IMMEDIATLY...the systen DOES NOT WORK!!!! On another note...hope you Gators had fun whooping up on two easy opponents....it would be nice to see you all finally play someone....how is it you all have 7 home games this year?? Only 5 on the road?? The joke continues.

...dudeman...that's all you got??

Is Cam Newton the best former gator* QB in the NFL?

He took a pay cut going from playing for Auburn to playing for the Panthers.

Elite programs like Ohio State, Penn State, etc. can schedule 7 home games because they fill their stadiums EVERY game, not just against FSU. U guys are a joke...have fun on probation.

Seriously Canes? Sending grandma money with tax dollars is not right period, but to compare the two is idiotic.I have tried now for several years to be supportive of the Hurricanes but you all are a bunch of two faced @#*&^,you don't even support your own team win they lose!!! I am done with you all. As for MY GATORS... they can lose the rest of there games and I will support them that's how the GATORS roll!. This is a waste of time to listen to any more Canes babble. Jealous Canes???
